Each year, VW and Audi faithful make a pilgrimage to Wörthersee, Austria, for an annual gathering of marque fans from around the world. VW and Audi usually put together a one-off ride to stun the crowd, and this year is no exception. Audi’s skunkworks has put together a mind-blowing variant of their A1, and the specs alone are enough to make me say, “want, badly.” How does 503 horsepower and 487 ft lb of torque from a twin-turbo, 2.5-liter I-5 engine sound? How about quattro all wheel drive and a curb weight of just over 3,000 pounds?
That combination is good enough to run from 0 to 100 kilometers per hour (62 mph) in just 3.7 seconds, and it will run from 0 to 200 kph (124 mph) in under 11 seconds. Top speed is electronically limited to 155 miles per hour, but reflash the ECU and I’ll bet the A1 clubsport quattro could outrun more than a few supercars. The short wheelbase would make the car a handful to drive at the limit, but I’d be more than willing to give it a shot if Audi would only toss me the keys and point me towards the nearest road course.
You can’t buy an A1 clubsport quattro, since Audi has no plans for production. You can drive it online, however, since the car is featured in EA’s Need For Speed World online game. The A1 clubsport quattro is available as a free rental, but only from June 1 to June 4; if you want a chance to drive this track animal against players from around the world, you’ve got four days to do so.
