On the 11th July, a team of students from The Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT), Cape Speed headed off to the UK where they will be competing against 110 teams from around the world with their very own formula built car for the Formula Student Cup.
South Africans can show their support for the Cape Speed team by powering a real-time Silverstone Scalextric race track with the replica car around the race track using the power of social networking, namely Twitter and Facebook. The digital agency behind this campaign Saatchi & Saatchi’s AtPlay decided to combine the fun of a Scalextric model and the best of social media. Now you can get in the driver’s seat and take your own lap around a race track.
The miniature 16m track is currently set up at Canal Walk Shopping Centre in Cape Town for the rest of the weekend. Anyone can participate by sending out tweets with the hashtag #capespeed or liking the team’s Facebook page, and power the car one lap around the track.
You can also determine the speed you want the car to go at various stages of the track by logging into your Facebook or twitter account on www.capespeed.co.za. There you can programme all 7 sectors on the race track with speeds varying between 1 – 10. The website will even show when you’re powering the lap, your lap time and where you are placed in the standings.
It’s for a great cause and its’s really fun! Start your engines…
