If you think all Mercedes-Benz models are posh luxo-barges that coddle driver and passengers in isolated comfort, think again. The Mercedes-Benz AMG Black Series has always catered to a sightly different type of buyer, one who still wants Mercedes-Benz’s engineering expertise, but with a harder edge. Black Series cars have always been about performance and handling, not about about sheer comfort and luxury.
The latest Black Series model, the C63 AMG Coupe is no exception to this rule. Output gets bumped up from 451 horsepower and 443 pound-feet of torque in the C63 AMG to 510 hp and 457 lb-ft in the Black Series coupe, enabling it to sprint from 0-60 mph in just 4.2 seconds. To make sure the Black Series corners equally well, a coilover suspension is standard and the car’s track has been widened by 1.6 inches up front and 3.1 inches in the rear. To ensure that you can rein the car in, AMG has six-piston front calipers grabbing 15.4-inch brake rotors and four-piston calipers grabbing 14.2-inch rotors out back.
Inside, you’ll find a cockpit designed to lower lap times, not provide cross-country comfort. The steering wheel is wrapped in Dinamica for a sure grip, while the thickly-bolstered sport seats provide plenty of lateral support for high G-force cornering. If you’re lucky enough to snap up one of the limited edition coupes, you likely won’t be disappointed by its on-track behavior.
