Consider this: it took supercar builder Lamborghini 29 months to build 1,000 units of its former flagship, the Murcielago. In just 15 months, Lamborghini has now hit the same production volume of its latest halo car, the carbon fiber and carbon-composite-heavy Aventador LP 700-4.
The 1,000th Aventador rolled off of Lamborghini’s assembly line on Thursday, July 9th, and the automaker’s CEO, Stephan Winkelmann, was on hand to personally deliver the car to its new owner. The Argos Orange Aventador was purchased by Hans Scheidecker, a German architect who already has a Lamborghini Diablo parked in his garage.
Strong demand for the Aventador helped Lamborghini quickly achieve this milestone, and the automaker still has an 18-month-long order list for the car. Production capacity of the Sant’ Agata Bolognese factory was increased late last year, allowing the automaker to build 4.5 cars per day, compared to 3 cars in early 2011.
Some prospective Aventador buyers lack the patience to wait a year and a half for delivery. Last year, a Saudi man reportedly spent $71,000 on top of the Aventador’s list price to take delivery of the first Aventador in Saudi Arabia.
