2010 Lexus LS460 Sport Review & Test Drive

‘ADDING EXCITEMENT TO THE LUXURY’

Most consumers who purchase the Lexus LS460 want the luxury, elegance, smooth and quiet ride along with the performance of the high-tech V8 engine.  Now consumers who want more aggressive styling, more excitement and higher levels of performance can add the Sport Package to their LS460.

When you option for the Sport Package you will see a more aggressive L-finesse design with a low, unique ‘blacked out’ grille with chrome surround, a lower air-dam to keep the front end solidly planted, side tunnels next to the foglamps that direct cool to the front brakes, a diffuser to better manage the airflow out the rear, new wheel-well stuffing, multi-spoke, forged alloy 19X8in. wheels wrapped with Dunlop 245/45R19in.

SP MAXX high-performance summer tires and a full aerodynamic lower bodykit that gives the car a lower center of gravity that further enhances the handling characteristics. The LS460 Sport slices through the air with a very low 0.26 co-efficient of drag.

Greater stopping power is provided by Brembo 14.2in. front vented discs clamped with four-piston Brembo calipers, and 13.8in. solid Brembo discs clamped with 2-piston calipers. Braking is further enhanced with standard ABS, EBD and BA.

Your steering inputs are quicker and more responsive with the addition of a sport-tuned air spring suspension with specific stabilizer bars and re-valved shock absorbers.  To attain the high-performance character of the LS460 Sport just push the toggle switch to Sport and push the other toggle switch to Power.  You’ll quickly feel the suspension tighten up, the electronic power-assisted rack & pinion steering also tightening up, and the engine mapping moving the rpm needle 500rpm higher in the rev band for more spirited shift points.  The car will explode to 60mph in just 5sec., and the response to your steering inputs come much quicker and more precise.  With an almost 50/50 weight distribution, the car feels very neutral as you dice through and around curving roads.

Inside are more supportive, perforated leather front bucket seats, a unique, heated, leather-wrapped, power tilt-telescoping steering wheel with paddle shifters for the 8-speed automatic with throttle blip downshifting adding more excitement as you attack sharp curving roads, hand-sewn contrasting saddle leather trim on the lower center stack, center console, armrest, door trim, rear pull down armrest plus dark brown ash burl wood trim on the dashboard and doors.  Inside, outside and under the sheet metal, this is no regular Lexus LS460.

The new LS460 Sport benefits with the luxury of a powerful, performance-driven 4.6 liter V8 that generates 380hp 6,400rpm and 367lb.ft. or torque at 4,100rpm.  The engine’s superior performance is due in large part to innovative technologies, including the world’s first electric motor-driven Variable Valve Timing with intelligence and Electronically (VVT-iE) controlled intake cam.  The electrically controlled intake achieves superior engine-startup operation and high-output performance.  A dual fuel-injection system, with both port and direct injection, optimizes efficiency under all conditions.  The direct injection helps provide cylinder cooling that allows the high compression ratio, 11.8:1, needed to produce such high power cleanly and efficiently. The dual-tract intake system and an Acoustic Control Induction System (ACIS) contribute to the smooth, linear power delivery.

The Lexus eight-speed automatic/sequential transmission allows gear ratios that maximize torque up to the tire-grip limitations in the lower ranges yet maintains quietness and admirable fuel efficiency at higher speeds.  To get the most fun and excitement when driving the LS460 Sport you just have to take the chrome/wood/leather-wrapped stick out of automatic ‘Drive’ and push the stick to the left for ‘Manual’ operation, forward to upshift, back to downshift, or for faster acting shifts you can use the aluminum paddle shifter fitted to the steering wheel.

When you order the Sport Package you don’t lose any of the Lexus accustomed luxury, comfort, convenience and safety systems inside.

The LS460 Sport has numerous user-tech amenities for a comprehensive luxury package.  The driver’s seat features a standard slide-away feature that makes ingress/egress more comfortable, 16-way drivers’ seat/12-way front passenger seat, dual zone automatic climate control with smog sensor, and a power tilt/slide moonroof.  Controls in the car provide the utmost convenience; including SmartAccess with push button start/stop, and power tilt-telescoping steering wheel with audio, brake hold and multi-information display controls.  An automatic electric parking brake system eliminates the need to press a foot-operated pedal.

The thin film transistor multi-informational display and Optitron instrument cluster set the tone for blending functional high-tech with pleasing aesthetics.  Tasteful wood and chrome trim as well as refinements to the interior lighting create a rich feeling, including LD ambient interior lighting with spot-lamp illumination in front and rear.  Even the angles on the center console were optimized to enhance comfort for you and your front passenger.

A multi-information display uses a large center console LCD screen; and the available navigation system employs voice command casual-language based voice recognition and Bluetooth phonebook download capability.  The audio system features an integrated XM radio received, music playing capability with Bluetooth audio streaming and USBiPod connectivity.  An iPod connected through the USB port can be controlled through the steering wheel audio controls or headunit.

More standard equipment in the new 2010 LS460 Sport, not mentioned above, includes electrochromic inside/outside mirrors, power folding heated outside mirrors with integrated turn signals, 3-person memory for seats/mirrors, one-touch open/close windows, door locks, grab handles above each door, dual map lamps, dual lighted vanity mirrors, Lexus 10-speaker Premium Sound System with digital sound processor, automatic sound levelizer, in-dash single feed 6-disc CD auto changer/AM-FM stereo radio, Bluetooth, XM satellite radio, Lexus Homelink universal transceiver, Lexus personalized settings, carpeted floor mats, rain-sensing variable intermittent wipers/washers, HID headlamps with adaptive front lighting, and foglamps.
