|GM To Increase Chevy Volt Production by 50%||
As we near closer to the launch date of the new Chevrolet Volt, General Motors announces plans to increase production of the Volt by 50% to 45,000 units in 2012. This comes after announcement of the official price of the Volt and President Obama’s tour of the Detroit Hamtramck facility where the Volt is being built. Detroit-Hamtramck makes up one of eight facilities located in Michigan that GM has invested in since 2008 in preparation for production of the Volt.
Originally there were plans to produce up to 30,000 Chevy Volts in year 2012. It seems there is a major push from the Obama administration to revolutionize how we consume energy and it will start with vehicles such as the Chevy Volt. The Volt is capable of traveling up to 40 miles on battery power alone. Factor in the gas powered motor acting as the charging agent in the new Volt and will essentially have a long-range “electric vehicle”.

DETROIT, Mich. – General Motors today said that thanks to strong public interest in the Chevrolet Volt, the 340-mile extended range electric vehicle, it will increase U.S. production capacity of the groundbreaking new car by 50 percent, from 30,000 units to 45,000 units, in 2012.
The announcement came as U.S. President Barack Obama toured the Detroit-Hamtramck facility, where the Volt is being produced now for sale later this year.
“The Chevrolet Volt provides drivers with the latest technology, outstanding innovation, and something no other electric vehicle can provide – peace of mind,” said Edward E. Whitacre, Jr., GM Chairman and CEO. “We are very proud to host the President of the United States at this plant, where the future of the American automobile industry is being built today by the men and women of General Motors.”
The expanded U.S. production capacity is the latest in a series of positive developments for the Chevrolet Volt. This week, participating Chevrolet dealers in launch markets began taking customer orders for the 2011 Chevrolet Volt, following the release of retail and lease pricing. The brand also recently announced unprecedented battery and vehicle limited warranties to bring value and peace of mind to Volt customers. And the number of U.S. launch markets for the vehicle recently was raised from three to seven. In the past few weeks, more than 25,000 people have joined the Chevrolet Volt enthusiast list.
The Volt offers a total driving range of about 340 miles and is powered by electricity at all times. For up to the first 40 miles, the vehicle drives gas- and tailpipe-emissions-free using electricity stored in its 16-kWh lithium-ion battery. When the Volt’s battery runs low, a gas-powered, engine/generator seamlessly operates to extend the driving range another 300 miles on a full tank.
The Detroit-Hamtramck plant received $336 million in new investment to prepare for production of the Volt, part of more than $700 million GM has invested in eight Michigan facilities to support Volt production since 2008. This includes a 33,000 square-foot battery systems lab in Warren; a battery assembly facility in Brownstown Township; and supporting engine and stamping operations in Grand Blanc, Bay City, and three plants in Flint.
Besides direct GM jobs, the Volt has helped spur additional supplier employment and investment. Earlier this month, battery cell supplier LG Chem/Compact Power Inc. broke ground on a $300 million, 650,000 square-foot plant in Holland, Mich., to support Volt production, creating 400 jobs. In addition, the Volt helped start an electrification trend. Since its debut in January 2007, other automakers have announced 30 plug-in hybrid or electric vehicles.

|Rumor Mill: Toyota Renews Trademark on ‘Supra’ Name Usage||
Not too long ago we reported that the rumor mill was spinning to the tune of a new successor to the Toyota Supra and MR2 coming out in the next few years. Today we are happy to report, according to Car and Driver, that Toyota has secured a trademark for use of the Supra name. What does that mean? It could mean a few things such as Toyota is actually going to name a new vehicle “Supra” which also means the vehicle will probably be based on the FT-HS concept or some variant of that.
It is very unlikely that the name Supra will be touted on the upcoming FT-86. Toyota president Akio Toyoda already said that he wants “to see the next Supra tested in the near future.” With the unfortunate death of Hiromu Naruse, Toyota’s test driver and creator of the last Supra and current Lexus LFA, it may have slowed any plans that Toyota had in the works for any type of car to receive the Supra nameplate. Only time will tell while we once again patiently wait for something more-exciting to come out of Toyota. I am even willing to forget all of the recent Toyota recalls if they came out with a Supra. HAHA!

Gazal 1В – first Saudi-made car
The very first car designed and built in Saudi Arabia is officially a reality. King Abdullah unveiled the production Gazal 1 at a special ceremony yesterday and congratulated everyone who participated in the vehicle’s development on a job well done. As you may recall, the Gazal 1 was a special project created by the students at King Saud University. Though built off the bones of a Mercedes-Benz G-Class, the KSU kids penned the exterior and reworked the interior to accommodate Saudi Arabia’s notoriously brutal climate and demanding terrain.
When we saw the original Gazal 1 design study at this year’s Geneva Motor Show, we thought the vehicle looked pretty good, especially considering how little experience the SUV’s designers had in bringing a full-scale vehicle to life. From what we can tell, it looks like the production version has stuck fairly close to the big green model we saw back in March. That means the Toyota FJ Cruiser-style roof has made its way into reality along with the very International grille.
It works for us, especially considering the go-anywhere Mercedes-Benz components bolted underneath. No one’s said what’s under the hood of the Gazal 1, but we’re guessing the same 382-horsepower 5.5-liter V8 from the standard G550 is a good bet.

This interesting video features the host of The Smoking Tire, Matt Farah and the creator of the Super Speeders, Rob Ferretti. Rob stages a contest to see who could get a ticket from a cop and return to the exotic car garage the fastest. Matt takes him up on the offer and chooses his car. |2011 Hyundai Elantra Official Images Surface||
We first noticed images of what could be the new 2011 Hyundai Elantra on AutoGuide.com sourced from Hyundai Blog. The images show a South Korean version of the Elantra called the Hyundai Avante. Reportedly the new Avante is set to hit showroom floors in Korea as early as next week. The question is, when will we see the new Elantra in America?
The new 2011 Hyundai Elantra is expected to get a 1.6-liter direct injection 4-cyl that produces 138 horsepower. From the styling looks of the Avante pictured here, it closely resembles a smaller version of the current Hyundai Sonata which is not a bad thing at all.
Over the past few years Hyundai has shown nothing but improvement and even better recognition in the Americas as they strive to become a major contender among Toyota and Honda consumers.
|2011 Ford Explorer Officially Priced from $28,190||
After Ford’s recent unveiling of the new 2011 Ford Explorer, many people were left wondering what the price of the 2011 Ford Explorer would be. Ford has officially priced the new 2011 Ford Explorer at a starting point of $28,190. This price point places the new Explorer in the mix of its SUV lineup mostly consisting of other cross-over vehicles such as the Ford Escape, Edge and Flex. The big Ford Expedition remains if you want to venture farther away from the traditional unit-body constructed crossovers.
What does $28,190 get you? The base 2011 Explorer comes standard with a three-row seven-passenger seating. The base Explorer also gets 17-inch steel wheels with plastic covers and the normal run-of-the-mill standard features that you would expect in any base model SUV. To step up from that model you will have to opt for the XLT which starts at $31,190. The XLT adds fog lights, 18-inch aluminum wheels, keyless entry and opens up a variety of optional tech features such as the blind-spot information system with cross traffic alert. From their things start to get a little spicy with the top-of-the-line Explorer Limited starting at $37,190. This is where you get a car that you can talk to and it responds via Ford’s Sync system.
Speaking of responding, there is a standard 3.5-liter V6 that produces 290 horsepower and 255 pound-feet of torque. For those wanting something a bit more economical and conservative, you can opt for a turbocharged EcoBoost 4-cyl which pumps out a decent 237 horsepower and 250 lb-ft of torque. Both engines will direct power through a 6-speed automatic in either all-wheel-drive ($2,000 option) or standard front-wheel-drive configurations.

|MINI All Set For World Rally Championship Re-entry||
The upcoming World Rally Championship will see MINI testing its mettle against players such as Citroen, Subaru and Ford. The decision assumes significance for the fact that this will be MINI’s re-entry into the racing challenge which would get underway next year. The car maker will be entering the MINI Countryman WRC, being developed by Prodrive. The tests will be for events that would run through 2011, and is expected to continue during the entire 2012 season.
The car maker is expected to bring on to the race track its four-wheel-drive rally car that will have incorporated in it a BMW Motorsport four-cylinder 1.6-liter turbocharged engine. It is expected that the car would be a regular entrant in more racing series too. Reports suggest that BMW is likely to make the car available to customer teams.
|Mazda CX-5 SUV By End of 2011; To Sport Sky Generation Direct-Injection Engines||
Japanese automaker Mazda will soon roll out its new small Mazda CX-5 SUV, after having tempted the world with its Kazamai concept for a couple of years now. The new small SUV is to be based on the two-year-old Kazamai concept and is most probably due for a launch date during the end of 2011.
The new small Mazda CX-5 SUV will be rolled with features that have an inclination towards maximum fuel efficiency. The new model is expected to also sport a new set of Sky generation direct-injection engines and a light transmission. The car, in fact, will be the first production Mazda to be powered by the new generation of ultra-efficient Sky engines.
It will also come with regenerative braking and start/stop functionalities. To be at least 100kg lighter compared with rival models, the car might come in both three- and five-door versions.
|Toyota FT-86 Not To Be Delayed; To Arrive November Next Year||
Come November 2011, and Toyota will be ready with its FT-86. The production version of the car is said to be almost 50 per cent complete. Though not many details have been revealed, it is being speculated that the car would be attached with a price tag of 2.5 million yen ($28,610 / €22,000).
If you would remember, the Toyota FT-86 was earlier been in the news for having been delayed till 2013. However, the latest reports that suggest a November 2011 launch have brought more discussions on the new Toyota offering.
What we get to know is that the new Toyota FT-86 would be based on a design similar to the concept that had been shown to us earlier. Though there might be minor modifications, the overall shape and design are said to be more or less the same. The concept was shown at the 2009 Tokyo Motor Show.
The concept car had been showcased then with a Subaru 2.0-liter Boxer engine, six-speed manual transmission, ADVICS brakes, and rear-wheel drive. Get set for the latest Toyota offering soon. By the way, what do you think about the pricing?
|Video: Pagani Zonda R Sets 6:47 Nurburgring Lap Time||
A new video documenting the Pagani Zonda R’s 6-minute 47-second Nurburgring lap time has been released. The Zonda R lap time shatters the one set some time ago by the Ferrari 599XX at 6:58. Even though the Zonda R is built off of a street-car design, it is not a street-legal car therefore this will not go down in the record book for fastest production car around the Ring.
Still, the Radical SR8LM holds the record for fastest street-legal car around the Nurburgring with a recorded time of 6:48.
The Pagani Zonda R is pure race-car tipping the scale at only 2,359lbs. The Zonda R is capable of a mad dash to 60mph from a standstill in just 2.7 seconds mainly due to its 750 horsepower and 524 ft-lbs of torque 6.0-liter AMG V12 engine. |2010 Mercedes-Benz CLS 6.3 AMG – ‘Beauty and the Beast’||
Not known for introducing niche vehicles, in 2006 Mercedes-Benz introduced the first CLS model, an eye-catching vehicle that blurred the line between coupe and sedan.
This sexy coupe-like sedan boasts the comfort and convenience of four doors and features a high-tension convex curve to its body shape as part of its sensuous exterior lines. The bold, low front end of the CLS is complemented by two-lamella chrome grille bars, and tasteful mesh to protect the engine bay from debris. The lower air intake, also covered by tasteful mesh, side brake ducts, and foglamps continue the aggressive looks, while the contoured outside mirrors incorporate arrow-shaped turn signals.
Eye-catching, wheel-well stuffing, AMG designed,19X9in. front, and 19X10in. rear, forged alloy wheels wear ultra-high-performance tires emphasizing the car’s powerful low and wide stance. The shortened, curved greenhouse glass is surrounded with a chrome strip to give it a luxury cue, and the lower side extensions give it a more ground-hugging look. The trunk follows the convex curve from the rear glass and features a spoiler to increase downforce. The bold rear bumper has trapezoidal dual chrome exhaust tips extending out, and wraparound, arrow-shaped LED taillights complete the cars total aggressive look. While Porsche has come out with the 2010 Panamera sedan and Aston-Martin has just introduced the Rapide, both four-door sedans, the CLS 6.3 AMG is still the most beautiful and sexy sedan on the road.
Open the doors and you’ll see that the stylish contours of the CLS continue throughout the interior which is complemented by an abundance of leather, wood and chrome. The doors show frameless glass adding a sporty look, as does the double polished stainless steel door kick plates. More sporty cues are seen with the AMG designed 3-spoke, leather-wrapped/power tilt/telescoping flat-bottom steering wheel which feels so good in your hands.
Further carrying on the sporty look are the aluminum/rubber facet foot pedals and three-chronometer-type gauge cluster with a center 200mph speedometer and 8,000rpm tachometer. At each side are unique, LED bar graphs in white with silver backgrounds showing fuel on board and engine coolant temperature. A monitoring system shows individual tire pressures as well as other important information about the status of the car via warnings in the instrument cluster. The dashboard shelf is covered with hand-cut and sewn leather as well as around the center stack, center console and door trim for that special luxury touch. The dashboard face is entirely covered by a big slab high gloss laurel wood trim that runs around the instrument cluster. Chrome rings surround the center and side air outlets, door switch plates, instrument cluster, shifter bezel, round dials and control buttons.
The CLS 6.3 AMG comes with four-zone climate control regulating temperature separately for each front and rear seat, with a separate digital control panel in the rear for setting the desired temperature and adjusting airflow. The rear also has a wood covered storage bin, cupholder and pull-down armrest with dual cupholders and storage.
The 10-way, leather trimmed sport bucket seats are outstanding with separate controls for heating/ventilation, side bolster adjustment and massage to keep you alert on long drives.
A large COMMAND central display on the center stack incorporates Bluetooth for hands-free cell phone operation, an in-dash six-disc CD/DVD player and voice control of audio and phone. The color display screen uses one set of easy-to-use controls for the audio system, including AM-FM-Weather Band and CD, standard HD radio, GPS navigation and SIRIUS satellite radio with real-time traffic data.
A standard Harman/Kardon Logic 7 digital surround sound system provides a luxurious listening experience. The system converts every conventional stereo signal from the radio, and CD/DVD player into surround sound with seven output channels, offering audio perfection for passengers, regardless of where they may be sitting. The sound system includes a digital signal processor, has a total output of 510-watts and plays through 12 high-end speakers, including two speakers on the rear parcel shelf that produce the surround sound effect. The system even adjusts volume automatically to compensate for ambient driving noise.
The beauty of the exterior design and the sporty and luxurious interior is contrasted with the beast that lies under the skin of the CLS 6.3 AMG. The car is powered by one of the most powerful naturally aspirated production V8s ever, also the first engine developed entirely by AMG. One engine builder puts the engine together and it is built almost completely from a high-strength silicon-aluminum alloy, the 6.3 liter features four valves per cylinder, double overhead camshafts with variable valve timing, bucket tappets (rather than rocker arms), and 11.3:1 compression ratio and a variable intake manifold. AMG engineers designed the 6.3 liter engine block with an especially rigid bedplate with cast-in steel reinforcements at the main bearing, and a sturdy closed-deck layout beside the cylinder heads. Cylinder bores feature a twin-wire-arc-sprayed (TWAS) coating, an innovative process that results in impressively low friction and running surfaces that are twice as hard as conventional cast-iron cylinders. Sharing no parts with other Mercedes-Benz V8 engines, the 6.3 AMG engine revs freely to over 7,000rpm, yet produces nearly 90% of its peak torque at only 2,000rpm. The engine generates 507hp at 6,800rpm and 465lb.ft. of torque at 5,200rpm, enabling the CLS 6.3 AMG to jet out to 60mph from a standstill in just 4.3sec. The beast is speak of is the incredible muffled roar of the engine when you push the start button on top of the stick shifter, and the increase in roar, like a lion, as you continue to push on the throttle and quickly gain speed to high triple digits.
All of the power and torque is transferred to the rear wheels via a seven-speed AMG Speedshift automatic transmission that can be shifted manually by either pushing left or right on the stick to upshift or downshift, or Formula-1 style aluminum shift paddles on the AMG sport steering wheel. To give performance-minded drivers more control, its manual mode doesn’t make any automatic upshifts-even at max engine speed-or automatic downshifts, even under full load. AMG Speedshift provides 35% faster gear shifts and torque convertor lockup from 1st. gear. It is fun and exciting to use either one, depending on your time and place.
AMG engineers developed a sports suspension for the CLS 6.3 AMG that’s based on the standard Mercedes-Benz AIRMATIC air suspension. The AMG-tuned AIRMATIC includes automatic level control that maintains ride height even when the car is loaded, and you can choose from three-sport-sport+-comfort, settings as well. For flatter cornering, the air springs, shocks and stabilizer bars are stiffer than on the CLS 550.
Speed-sensitive power rack & pinion steering ensures low steering effort for low speed maneuvers such as parallel parking, but automatically reduces the steering assist above 60mph to provide good road feel. To help handle all the power, the ESP system can apply the brakes on just one wheel to transfer torque to the wheels with better traction, achieving much the same effect as a limited-slip differential. You can of course shut the ESP system down to let the rear slide out during entry into a steep curve, then stomp on the throttle as you exit. Stronger driveshafts, heavy-duty rear suspension components and a stronger differential housing with cooling fins complete the package. The suspension is very neutral and responsive to your inputs the way you would want a supercar to react.
To make the ride even more enjoyable and exciting to the enthusiast, you can order the optional AMG Performance Package that my test vehicle came with. It allows a 186mph top speed instead of the usual 155mph speed limiter, AMG track-calibrated AIRMATIC sport suspension with stiffer spring rates, 19X8.5in. front and 19X9.5in. rear AMG designed, forged alloy wheels wrapped with Pirelli P Zero high-performance, low-profile tires, 255/35ZR19in. up front, and 285/30ZR19in. tires in the rear, and a limited-slip rear differential to put all of the power down on the pavement.
The package also includes giant brakes to make sure that the CLS 6.3 AMG stops as fast as it goes. Giant 15.4in. two-piece construction, ventilated brake discs up front are punched and slotted and clamped with 6-piston calipers, while the rear ventilated discs are punched, measure 13in. and are clamped with 4-piston calipers. ABS and Brake Assist assure control during severe braking maneuvers. The CLS 6.3 AMG has it all to make your ride more enjoyable inside, at speed on the highway or when attacking curving roads.
My CLS 6.3 AMG comes standard with the following items not mentioned above-electronic cruise control, all express up/down power windows/door locks, thick cut-pile carpeting with signature floor mats, auto-dimming rearview mirror/sideview mirrors, intermittent rain-sensing wipers/washers, integrated garage door opener, dual map lamps, electronic moon roof, storage slots in each door and map pockets behind the front bucket seats.
My CLS 6.3 AMG also came with the Premium Package that includes electronic trunk opener/closer, power rear window sunshade, heated/ventilated/massaging front seats, Bi-Xenon headlamps with active curve illumination, headlamps washing system and KEYLESS GO start/stop button and door locks.

|New Ford Focus RS Could Feature Hybrid Drivetrain||
Ford has reportedly been planning to incorporate a hybrid drive set-up in its next-generation Ford Focus RS and will also attempt to convert the vehicle into an all-wheel drive sports hatch.
While the planned hybrid drive on the next Focus RS will resemble the drive technology present on the Peugeot Hybrid 4, it will consist of an Ecoboost unit of 2.0 litre capacity connected to a electric motor fitted on the rear axle of the vehicle.
Both the RS and ST variants of the car will have an engine power of 250 bhp, butt he addition of the electric motor on the RS will increase the total power of the vehicle to 300 bhp. The new drivetrain will also increase the fuel-efficiency of the new Focus RS as compared to existing Focus RS models.
Ford could provide further details about the vehicle during the Paris Auto Show due to be held in October, where the company will also put its Focus ST on display for the first time.
|New Ford Focus ST Debuts in Paris||
American auto manufacturer Ford will display its new 2012 Ford Focus ST in the upcoming Paris Auto Show in the month of October. The new model will feature a new EcoBoost engine that is likely to be similar to the 2.5-liter turbocharged engines present in existing Ford models such as the Galaxy, S-Max and Mondeo.
The EcoBoost unit in the next Focus ST could provide as much as 300 bhp of power and will employ the torque vectoring technology created by Ford to channel that power to the front wheels of the car and to help the car grip the road as much as possible.
The new Focus ST will also be capable of bursting from 0 to 100 kmph speeds in a matter of 6 seconds and has a maximum speed of 250 kmph (155 mph). It will also be more fuel efficient than the existing Focus ST model and is expected to release in 2011, after the Europe launch of the hatchback and wagon variant of the Ford Focus in April 2011.
|SSC Ultimate Aero To Launch On August 8; Will It Defeat The Bugatti Veyron?||
The second generation Aero, called the Ultimate Aero, from Shelby Sports Cars will be unveiled by the company on August 8th at the Boeing Flight Museum in Seattle. The Ultimate Aero is SSC’s attempt to regain its title of “fastest road car in the world” from current title holder Bugatti Veyron Super Sport.
The Bugatti Veyron had achieved its title after breaking the 255.83 mph record set by the previous model of the Aero called the Ultimate Aero TT. The new Ultimate Aero will require more than the 1,183 hp present in the Aero TT to become faster than the Veyron Super Sport, which has a 1,200 hp-engine and has set a record top speed of 268 mph.
The designer of the new Ultimate Aero, Jason Castriota, will also have to make sure that the design does not cause aerodynamic drag, besides ensuring better power features for the car.
So does the Veyron Super Sport have a reason to be scared? The answer will be revealed on August 8.
|2012 Dodge Durango Pictures Leaked On Twitter||
A picture of an uncovered 2012 Dodge Durango, which may get its name changed to Magnum when it hits the market, has been leaked onto the internet through microblogging site, Twitter.
The leaked picture shows that the grills of the new Durango have been reshaped and its sides have also been rounded. The new headlights on the vehicle are accompanied by a hood that is broader in size. The bumper has also been remodeled while the side-sills look better than the previous version as well.
Other outer design features that can be seen are the teardrop shape of the rear window which complements the new design of the side windows. The vehicle’s c-pillar is also thicker than before and the b-pillar blends in with the body.
The Durango could become available as the Magnum next year with either a Penastar V6 with 3.6-liter capacity capable of producing 280 hp, or a HEMI V8 engine of 5.7 liter capacity capable of producing 360 hp power.
