The Latest Hypercars Would Make Awesome Le Mans Racers 26

It had a good run, but today’s LMP1 class is all but completely dead – killed by a gradual bleeding of its vital participating manufacturers. It’s time, in short, for the FIA and ACO to rethink of what the top tier at Le Mans and the World Endurance Championship should be composed. And looking at these renderings, we’re convinced that the latest crop of hypercars would be just the ticket.

Illustrated by Marco van Overbeeke and shared both on Behance and Drivetribe, these images show what the most extreme road cars would look like if converted to a revived GT1 specification.

GT1, for those who don’t recall, was a more extreme class of (barely) road-derived racers that formed both the top tier at Le Mans in the late 1990s and the backbone of the successive FIA championships from 1993 through 2012. It yielded such legendary cars as the Porsche 911 GT1, Mercedes CLK GTR, McLaren F1 GTR, Maserati MC12, and Aston Martin DBR9 – each world-beating champions in their own right, casting a long shadow even over the LMP1 prototypes and GTE racers that have taken their place at either end.

It would take a special breed of machinery to revive their spirit, but these race-converted hypercars could do just the trick – encouraging the most exotic automakers to showcase their machinery, and giving fans something more tangible to root for.

Overbeeke’s conceptual lineup includes race-converted versions of the Mercedes-AMG Project One, McLaren Senna, Aston Martin Valkyrie, Porsche 918, Koenigsegg Agera RS, and Ferrari FXX-K Evo. Who knows, maybe Bugatti could be tempted to take part as well with a competition-spec Chiron (looking like its Vision Gran Turismo concept), and Toyota to shift its program based on the LMP1-inspired supercar concept it has coming. It’d make a fitting opportunity for Lamborghini too, if the costs could be kept low enough for the VW group to justify multiple programs (like it did with Porsche and Audi until recently). What do you say, racing fans?

Voodoo Blue Paint Showcases Porsche 918 Spyder’s Design Perfectly 16

Posted by Brad Anderson in Galleries, Hybrids, porsche, Porsche 918, used cars on 12 16th, 2017

The current crop of supercars may be snapping at the heels of the hybrid hypercar trio, but the McLaren P1, Ferrari LaFerrari, and Porsche 918 Spyder will prove to be increasingly valuable assets in the coming decades – and this 918 located in Saudi Arabia could prove to be one of the most desirable.

While most 918 Spyder owners opted for relatively dull shades and colors, the owner of this example had the hypercar painted in Voodoo Blue, a color that beautifully captures the sleek design of the hypercar.

It’s currently listed for sale from Seven Car Lounge, but no price has been made public. Nevertheless, a figure equivalent to roughly $2 million in the U.S. isn’t out the question, especially when considering the fact that the car has the desirable Weissach package that improves aerodynamics and strips away any unnecessary weight.

As you probably already know, the Porsche 918 Spyder is powered by a naturally-aspirated 4.6-liter V8 mated to a pair of electric motors. Its maximum combined output is 887hp, and it can launch from a standstill to 62 mph (100 km/h) in under 2.5 seconds.

Matching 918 Spyder & 911 R Put A Porschephile’s Dream On The Auction Block 13
Dec

Of all the lust-worthy performance machines Porsche has made in the past decade, few have solicited the kind of enthusiasm as the 918 Spyder and 911 R.

For its upcoming auction in Scottsdale, Bonhams not only has one of each on the docket, but a matching pair that would be sure to make any Porschephile very, very happy indeed.

These models should need no introduction to regular readers of sites like this one: the 918 Spyder having emerged as the first in a new generation of hybrid hypercars, the 911 R a highly sought-after version of the purist’s Porsche.

Having already received his 918 Spyder (with the optional Weissach wheels and front lift system), Porsche offered the owner the opportunity to buy a 911 R after it was revealed the following year. He evidently jumped at the chance, special-ordering his in an inverse acid green and black color combination, with the serial number 290 to match the Spyder’s.

By now the 918 has been driven 2,300 miles, but the 911 R just 37, leaving it in highly original condition.

“This is an incredible and historic opportunity in every way,” says Bonhams’ Michael Camaino. “First, a 918 Spyder and 911 R in such desirable specification are tremendously newsworthy on their own, but offered in nearly brand-new condition with matching serial numbers? It’s never been done and represents an incredible, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for a collector.”

There’s Something Delightfully Incongruous About A Base-Spec Exotic 26

Automakers are doing their best these days to make even their most basic, budget-friendly vehicles look polished. But there are some you can expect to see in base spec – mostly for professional use and deployment as part of large fleets.

We’re talking about work-a-day vehicles like the Ram Tradesman, for example, or the Opel Corsavan. But an exotic supercar? Perish the thought!

That’s precisely the delightful incongruity we’ve been seeing these lately, albeit only in the digital realm: six-figure supercars and even seven-figure hypercars stripped of their painted bumpers and flashy wheels, fitted instead with matte black noses and tails and plain old steel rims.

Of course, even if you could, ordering one that way wouldn’t put much of a dent in the purchase price of something as expensive as a Bugatti Chiron, Koenigsegg Agera, Pagani Huayra, or even something as relatively “affordable” as a Lamborghini Huracan, Aston Martin DB11, or Mercedes-AMG GT.

It’d ruin the handling too, and make your big-buck exotic look like it were in the middle of being repaired. So we’re thankful that none of these exist in reality, but it’s still funny to look at these curious renderings from Nikita Aksyonov and chuckle at the “what if” of it all.
