The car would be staying with its front-wheel drive strategy. The new RS will continue to deploy the ‘Revoknuckle’ suspension that allowed Ford to put 224 kW through the front wheels without creating excessive torque steer.

Rumors that talked about the new RS being an all-wheel drive by adopting electric motors to power the rear axle have however been denied.

The current RS’s Volvo-sourced 2.5 liter five-cylinder turbo engine has the potential for an upgrade and Ford is trying to get more out of it. The Focus RS is hoped to be launched in 2013.

At the recent Audi Forum held in Germany, sources from the car company had revealed their plans for the high performance division’s future. The best news was for North America, which is to have even more performance-oriented RS models, due to the euro-dollar exchange rates improving; and also due to the rising similarity in the emissions regulations.

These two factors jointly add to the business viability of making more low-production models available in North America.

There is also some speculation that buoyed by the changing scenario Audi might even have more RS models for the US. Hardcore Audi fans will be delighted to hear that Audi SUVs will not have RS badges on them.

For a vehicle to have ‘RS’ on it – it should satisfy in the categories of ultimate performance, driving dynamics, and what is technically possible. Unfortunately most of the SUVs are too heavy to meet all these qualifying bars.

One of them, the Q7 V12 TDI meets two of the requirements, but is still too heavy. For the same reasons the RS model of the A8 will also not be coming out. The sources, however hinted that there is a possibility of a new RS4 coming out next year.

Ford has reportedly been planning to incorporate a hybrid drive set-up in its next-generation Ford Focus RS and will also attempt to convert the vehicle into an all-wheel drive sports hatch.

While the planned hybrid drive on the next Focus RS will resemble the drive technology present on the Peugeot Hybrid 4, it will consist of an Ecoboost unit of 2.0 litre capacity connected to a electric motor fitted on the rear axle of the vehicle.

Both the RS and ST variants of the car will have an engine power of 250 bhp, butt he addition of the electric motor on the RS will increase the total power of the vehicle to 300 bhp. The new drivetrain will also increase the fuel-efficiency of the new Focus RS as compared to existing Focus RS models.

Ford could provide further details about the vehicle during the Paris Auto Show due to be held in October, where the company will also put its Focus ST on display for the first time.
