Tesla Could Be Causing A Global Battery Shortage 8
Posted by Brad Anderson in battery, Electric Vehicles, japan, Reports, Tesla on 12 8th, 2017

Tesla has reportedly caused a global shortage of cylindrical batteries as it looks to up production at the Gigafactory.

According to Korean publication ET News, the car manufacturer is receiving the majority of Panasonic’s Japanese battery supplies to meet demand for the Tesla Model 3. Consequently, other companies have been left to look for battery cells from the likes of Samsung, LG, and Murata, brands which cannot keep up with demand.

Due to the limited supply, a host of companies, including the likes of IT firms and other electric vehicle manufacturers, are unlikely to receive their battery orders until the middle of 2018.

“It is impossible to purchase cylindrical batteries within Japan and we were even notified by Panasonic that they are not going to sell cylindrical batteries anymore,” a representative for a Japanese battery distributor said.

“It has come to a point where we cannot even purchase products from Samsung and LG and even products from Samsung and LG that were produced in China.”

Sources claim that the remote location of Tesla’s Gigafactory and its reliance on renewable energy is the cause of production delays.

Jaguar has lifted the wraps off its C-X75 concept which comes driven with a combination of battery and gas turbine power. The concept vehicle is now being showcased at the 2010 Paris Motor Show, and is luring eyeballs for its unique eco-friendly power system.

Designed as a two-seater, the car comes with capabilities of accelerating from 0-62mph in just 3.4 seconds and has a top speed of 205mph. These attributes promise the Jaguar C-X75 to be the fastest-ever electric road car when it finally arrives on the tarmac.

Powered by a lithium-ion battery that runs four electric motors, the C-X75 boasts of motors providing 195bhp each, making it a total of 780bhp. Torque specs read 1180 lb ft. The battery power is capable of life on a six-hour charge from the mains and can run 68 miles on a single go. Besides, it also deploys two super efficient gas turbines derived from aircraft jet engines, which in turn gives it extra power so as to run an extra range of 560 miles.

When it arrives at dealerships, the Jaguar C-X75 is expected to cost around £200,000. Seen as a follow up model to the XJ220, the car maker hasn’t, however, announced its production plans as yet.

GM Opel Meriva Electric Test Fleet Being Readied 29

Opel is developing three battery-electric versions of its Meriva as part of the MeRegioMobil research project which is funded by the Ministry of Economics and Technology in Germany.

GM’s Opel electric Meriva will feature electronic controls which will allow high power electrical recharging using both a 230-volt single-phase current (charging time is approximately 3.5 hours) as well as a 400-volt three-phase AC (takes less than an hour to charge).

The vehicle-to-grid (V2G) capability of the car via the bi-directional charging system (when the car is not in use and the driver permits it) will be the real test. This demonstration of two-way charging technology will test the practicality of distributed energy storage in car batteries for home usage.

The car will be coming equipped with a 16 kWh battery pack which will provide a range of 64 km (40 miles) and the vehicle will be able to hit a top speed of 130 km/h (81 mph).

General Motors brand Chevrolet has announced the most comprehensive battery warranty ever by an automaker. It offers an 8-year, 100,000 mile (160,000 km) warranty on the battery for the Chevy Volt model. The key part of the warranty is that it will cover all 161 parts of the Volt power-pack. The warranty is transferable to new owners of the vehicle free of charge.

The Chevy Volt is an extended-range, all-electric vehicle. Powered by an electric motor producing 112 kW (150 bhp) and 273 lb-ft (370 Nm), the car can run up to 40 miles (65 km) on electrical power alone. After this distance is covered, a small gasoline engine kicks in, which serves as a generator to charge the 16-kWh lithium-ion battery and extend the range to about 340 miles (547 km).
