Chrysler’s Recalling 160,000 Stalling Pacifica Minivans 15
Jan
Posted by Carscoops Staff in Chrysler, Chrysler Pacifica, NHTSA, Recalls on 01 15th, 2018

Chrysler is having issues with some units of the Pacifica stalling, so it’s issued a recall about its minivan.

The problem, which affects 162,508 vrhicles worldwide, stems from the engine control unit, which “may incorrectly assess the engines’ operating status,” according to the manufacturer, who adds that “if this occurs, the engine may stall.”

The issue could arise in a wide array of circumstances: when the vehicle is idling, starting, turning, or driving at low and steady speeds. It appears to be limited strictly to conventionally powered 2017 models, and not to the hybrid version.

Of the vehicles being recalled, the vast majority (153,859 units) are located in the United States. Another 7,457 are in Canada, 974 in Mexico and 245 outside of North America.

No injuries related to the issue have been reported so far, with the drivers apparently able to restart the vehicle without difficulty after it stalls. The fix will involve Chrysler’s dealers simply reflashing the software.

Google Assistant Heads To Android Auto To Battle Amazon’s Alexa 10

A number of automakers have recently announced plans to integrate Amazon’s Alexa into future models but Google is fighting back by adding its Assistant to Android Auto.

The company is rolling out the update in the United States this week and the addition of the Google Assistant will allow drivers to easily ask their vehicle for directions or have it play their favorite music. Drivers can even use the Assistant to send or receive messages though services like WhatsApp.

Despite the backlash over GM’s marketplace app, Google is following a similar route as the company announced its Assistant will soon enable drivers to reserve a parking space with SpotHero and order from Starbucks while driving.

To use Android Auto and its new Assistant, users can download the app on their smartphone or connect their phone to one of the more than 400 models that offer Android Auto compatibility. Google went on to say they are working with automakers to directly integrate the Assistant into upcoming models and this will eliminate the need for a smartphone in the future.

In related news, Google announced Kia and Fiat Chrysler owners will soon be able to use the Assistant to remotely lock / unlock their vehicle doors and check its fuel status – among other things. The feature is already available on certain models from BMW, Mercedes, and Hyundai.

VW Beetle Meets Chrysler PT Cruiser Woody In Horrific Mishmash 8

The eBay listing of this 2003 VW Beetle suggests that the car is the rare “Woody Edition” but in reality, it is just a horrific cream-colored Beetle convertible with styling inspired by the Chrysler PT Cruiser, an ugly vehicle in its own right.

Images from the listing reveal that the owner has managed to mimic the front grille of the PT Cruiser and slap the creation onto the front fascia of the Beetle. It makes an already putrid-looking car appear even worse.

Beyond the grille, fake wood paneling has also been applied to the sides and rear of the car. The Beetle itself is pretty hilarious but the description provided by the seller delivers even more laughs.

“OUR FAVORITE CUSTOMER IS SOMEONE WHO KNOWS WHAT THEY WANT AND HAVE MADE THEMSELVES FAMILIAR WITH MARKET PRICING *** WE GET STRAIGHT TO THE POINT *** THERE IS NO NEED FOR THE BACK AND FORTH NONSENSE *** *** REMEMBER YOU ARE BUYING A USED CAR, NOT A NEW ONE *** WE TRY OUR BEST TO BRING YOU THE NICEST CARS ON THE MARKET AND TO BE TRUTHFUL ABOUT OUR DESCRIPTION,” the listing reveals in capitals.

Perhaps it would be reassuring to ignorant buyers to know that the seller is “truthful” about the listing, but to us, it’s a little disconcerting that something like that needs to be stipulated in the listing. What’s more, we already know the description isn’t entirely truthful as there is no “Woody Edition” of the VW Beetle.

In terms of pricing, the car has a price tag $6,999, precisely $6,998 more than we’d be willing to pay.

All These FCA Vehicles Need To Have Their Fire Extinguishers Replaced 4
Jan
Posted by Carscoops Staff in Chrysler, Dodge, FCA, Jeep, RAM, Recalls on 01 4th, 2018

Of all the recalls we’ve seen from Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, this one hardly seems the biggest. It “only” affects about 60,000 vehicles, after all. But it’s the enormous variety of them that’s caught our attention.

The recall’s been issued specifically for those vehicles equipped with Kidde fire extinguishers, the nozzles of which could be prone to clogging up or falling off altogether. In either case, they won’t be doing their jobs in case, heaven forbid, an actual fire should break out.

FCA apparently fitted the problematic units to certain examples of – deep breath now – the Chrysler Pacifica (2018) and Town & Country (2014-2016); Dodge Caliber (2007), Challenger (2009), Charger (2016), Dart (2015-16), Durango (2004), Grand Caravan (2014-2016), and Journey (2014); Jeep Cherokee (2014-16), Compass (2017), and Patriot (2011); and Ram 1500 (2012, 2015), 2500 (2013-18), 3500 (2012-18), 4500 (2012-18), and 5500 (2012-18), as well as the ProMaster (2014-17), and ProMaster City (2015-17) vans.

Tally up all the models by their model years and you’re looking at 55 different vehicles, accounting for 62,042 units in the United States. Rather than call them all into dealers to have those fire extinguishers replaced, though, FCA’s instructing owners on how to get in touch with Kiddle for replacement units.

FCA Discussing Settlement Over Diesel Emissions Cheating 21
Dec
Posted by Brad Anderson in Chrysler, diesel, FCA, Fiat, Jeep, RAM, Reports on 12 21st, 2017

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles is engaging in settlement talks with owners of certain diesel-powered vehicles from the brand.

On Tuesday, a court-appointed advisor revealed that Fiat Chrysler and lawyers of diesel owners have exchanged settlement documents and briefly discussed proposed terms earlier this week alongside the Justice Department, California Air Resources Board and Robert Bosch.

In May, the U.S. Justice Department sued the car manufacturer, claiming that it had used illegal diesel software on roughly 104,000 vehicles sold in the United States since 2014. These diesel controls allowed the vehicles to emit excess pollution during normal driving conditions.

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles
has denied any wrongdoing and claims to have never attempted to create software aimed at cheating emissions rules.

Court settlement master Ken Feinberg revealed to Reuters that all the parties involved are acting in good faith to find a solution.

“We’re looking for different substantive ways to secure an early comprehensive settlement. Everybody in good faith is certainly trying to figure out how we might achieve a comprehensive settlement,” he said.
