BMW 1M Coupe With Custom Exhaust Sounds Like A Machine Gun Firing 11

Monaco’s scenery is usually dominated by exotic rides, but one BMW 1M Coupe managed to stand out a few days ago.

This is a limited edition of the car that preceded the M2 and was produced in just 6,309 units, including the 740 sold in the United States and 220 shipped to Canada.

Compared, by some, to the original M3 E30, it’s powered by a 3.0-liter twin-turbo straight-six that sends 335hp and 450Nm (332lb-ft) of torque to the rear wheels. This allows it to hit 100km/h (62mph) from a standstill in just 4.9 seconds and reach an electronically limited top speed of 250km/h (155mph).

Its performance and limited availability would be enough to make it a head turner, but the owner of this particular car, which has Swiss license plates, wanted a bit more, so he fitted it with a custom body kit, a special wrap and black wheels.

However, what made it a real head turner is the special exhaust system that basically makes it sound like an Group B rally car – and that’s high praise indeed. The backfires bring it extra points too, although we can imagine his neighbors might not be too thrilled…

Britain’s largest online marketplace for new and used cars, AutoTrader, has revealed the 10 most searched cars this year.

Retaining the number 1 position in the United Kingdom is the BMW 3-Series, which was favored by most internet users with a diesel powertrain, followed by the Volkswagen Golf and the Mercedes-Benz C-Class.

Ford’s Focus comes in 4th place, whereas BMW follows it from the 5th and 6th positions with the 1-Series and 5-Series, respectively. Another Ford, this time the Fiesta, sits on the 7th spot, right in front of the Audi A3 and Mercedes-Benz E-Class, and the Vauhxall/Opel Astra completes the Top 10 list.

The diesel searches were topped by the BMW 3-Series, Volkswagen Golf, and BMW 5-Series, whereas the most favored petrol powered cars were the Volkswagen Golf, BMW 3-Series, and Ford Focus.

For hybrids, Toyota holds on to the first two positions with the Auris and Prius, followed by the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, while the electric ‘crown’ goes to the Nissan Leaf, which turned out to be more popular than the BMW i3 and Mercedes-Benz B-Class.

“The results show that British car buyers are very keen on spoiling themselves, with premium manufacturers featuring very heavily in our list of most searched-for cars”, commented AutoTrader’s road test editor, Ivan Aistrop.

2019 BMW 1-Series Stays Camouflaged During Cold Weather Tests 27

BMW’s direct rival for the Mercedes-Benz A-Class and Audi A3 is still undergoing tests in prototype form, and is expected to remain hidden well into the new year.

Compared to the current model, the all-new 2019 1-Series is said to look sportier and more imposing, while leaving more room inside for occupants, especially those sitting in the back.

The extra room will come courtesy of BMW’s UKL platform, which will also empower the 1-Series to switch from RWD to FWD, matching its rivals from Mercedes, Audi and Volvo.

It’s also been reported that the 1-Series will shift towards a permanent 5-door body style, like the A-Class. Audi decided to do the same with the 2019 A3, mostly due to falling demand and cost-cutting.

While these images don’t really provide us with a look inside, we already know that the all-new 1-Series will have its dashboard angled towards the driver, with the infotainment display mounted above the central air vents. It also has a new center console, housing a new gear selector and the rotary iDrive knob.

As for power units, reports indicate that any six-cylinder options will be scrapped in favor of four-cylinder ones, with a range-topping M140i model sending power to all four wheels via BMW’s xDrive all-wheel drive system. A plug-in hybrid version is also expected to join the range at some point.

Stock BMW 1M Coupe Hits The Drag Strip, Sounds Delicious 9

Prior to the M2 Coupe’s development, BMW had the 1M around, in a limited production version that in some ways, reminded enthusiasts of the E30 M3.

Based on its hatch 135i sibling, the compact model wears the ‘1M’ badge instead of the ‘M1’ to avoid confusion with the legendary sports car designed by Giugiaro, made from 1978 to 1981.

Over the years, the 1M Coupe has proved its skills by taking on some powerful machines, putting its 3.0-liter twin-turbo straight-six engine to work, developing 335 horses and 332 pound-feet (450Nm) of torque. That is enough to propel it from 0 to 62mph (100km/h) in 4.9sec, and up to a top speed that’s electronically limited at 155mph (250km/h).

Although the powerful M car has become a collector’s item, reaching close to $60,000 on the used car market, some of the 6,309 examples continue to be put through their paces at various events. The latest one was captured on video during the Race 1000, in Germany, where it did a few fast runs, to the delight of the audience, making some sweet music along the way.
