Driving Sim Firm Says Virtual Autonomous Car Tests Are Safer And Cheaper 25
Nov
Posted by Sergiu Tudose in ADAS, Autonomous, Reports, Tech, UK on 11 25th, 2017

Now that the British government is expecting autonomous tech developers to begin testing their vehicles on UK roads by 2021, a strong case could be made for these tests to be conducted in enclosed environments.

At least, that’s how driving sim company Cruden feels, calling for such tests to be carried out virtually, in a safer, and more cost-effective, manner.

Jelle van Doornik, development engineer at Cruden, said that getting “repeatable and controlled testing for Level 3, 4 and even Level 5 vehicles cannot be completed on UK roads with real traffic without risking accidents, hence the need for the industry to embrace simulator testing.”

“Through sophisticated, realistic driving simulators, Cruden can offer a driver-in-the-loop simulator to test advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) and autonomous vehicle systems that will reduce costs and development time. We invite car manufacturers, regulators and psychologists to get in touch to discuss how driving simulation can help the development of autonomous vehicles. We look forward to helping to shape this exciting new era of mobility.”

The UK government has already made specific changes both in regulations and its budget in order to allow driverless cars to begin testing on public roads without any human operator either inside or outside the vehicle. So even if it’s safer and more efficient to test these technologies in a lab, it would appear the world’s governments want these cars to be tested in real-world traffic conditions.

Now, the question is would you feel safe knowing self-driving prototypes are roaming your city without anybody on board to take over if the electronics don’t work as advertised?

Renault has started taking orders for the new Trafic SpaceClass in the United Kingdom, subsequent to its debut at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival.

Billed as “a high-end shuttle version that provides an attractive and fitting environment in which to transport VIPs and business people”, the van comes in three trim levels, Standard, Adventurer, and Prestige, with a starting price of £40,191 ($53,095), including tax.

All three variants can be had in short or long wheelbase, with a choice of two diesel engines: the dCi 125PS (123hp) and dCi 145PS (143hp), which are mated to a six-speed manual gearbox.

Building upon the Trafic Passenger Sport, the new Renault Trafic SpaceClass can accommodate up to 9 people. Moreover, its seats mounted on rails in the second and third rows can be rearranged to create more than 50 different configurations, a feature Renault claims is unique in the segment.

Depending on the selected trim, the high-end van comes with features including rear privacy glass, climate control, air conditioning in the rear passenger area, individual LED reading lamps, 220V and USB sockets.

Standard equipment on the entry-level grade counts the MediaNav Evolution infotainment system with a 7-inch touchscreen display, navigation, full leather steering wheel, cruise control, automatic headlights and wipers and front fog lamps.

The Adventurer adds a pair of Captain chairs in the second row and a rear bench that can fold out creating a fully flat bed, whereas the Prestige gets Riviera leather upholstery and flexible seating, among other things.

Aftermath Videos Of A Totaled McLaren 570S In London 23

A McLaren 570S is no more, after it was crashed under unverified circumstances.

The accident reportedly happened in central London, a couple of weeks ago, and judging by the videos that follow, the British supercar appears to be damaged beyond repair.

Its front end is ruined, and so are the rest of its sides, while it’s also missing a wheel and the suspension. Moreover, it seems that the engine bay has suffered significant damages of its own, but the passenger compartment has remained in one piece, suggesting that the occupant(s) might have walked away.

One of the videos’ description might give us a clue as to what exactly happened, as it says: “this crazy guy [McLaren 570S driver] hit a war pensioner, then ran from the scene”. If that’s indeed the case, then there’s a good chance that at the time of reporting this story, the driver had been identified.

It hasn’t been a McLaren-loving month, as this incident joins another one in which a P1 was extensively damaged in Cambodia, whereas in Georgia, USA, a man was taken into custody after speeding in his 720S on the State Route 400.

New Jaguar E-Pace Isn’t Perfect But Does It Matter? 22

Following the commercial success of the F-Pace, Jaguar is expanding its SUV range with the addition of the E-Pace, a smaller crossover designed to rival cars like the BMW X1 and the Mercedes GLA.

The British car maker wants the new E-Pace to become the benchmark in terms of handling in its class and of course design. Inspiration was clearly drawn by the F-Type in a bid to make the new compact crossover a Jaguar worthy of the name, both inside and out.

The underpinnings though are shared with the Range Rover Evoque, with Jaguar making the necessary alterations to things like suspension geometry in order for the E-Pace to offer a different, more engaging character.

All engines measure 2.0 liters in capacity and four cylinders, with Euro-spec cars getting three power options for the diesel unit (148hp, 178hp and 237hp) and two for the petrol one (246hp and a range-topping 296hp). Jaguar will offer the E-Pace in both front- and all-wheel drive versions.

So it looks good, there are plenty of options in the range and has a Jaguar badge on it but can the E-Pace mix all those things well enough to become a solid player in the segment? Auto Express delivers its verdict, so let’s find out.

The Opel Karl has been available as a rugged Rocks model since last year, and now its British sibling, the Vauxhall Viva, has received an identical treatment.

Named the Vauxhall Viva Rocks, it can already be ordered in the United Kingdom from £11,530 ($15,268) on-the-road, featuring plastic cladding all around, an increased ride height, silver roof rails, and unique 15-inch bi-color look alloy wheels.

Building upon the regular Vauxhall Viva, the Rocks version retains its five-door design and practical interior, with a boot space that exceeds 1,000 liters with the rear seats folded down.

Inside, it can be equipped with the optional R 4.0 IntelliLink infotainment system, with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Apple Maps or Google Maps, and an integrated navigation system. Additionally, those looking for a bit more can also order the OnStar personal connectivity and service assistant.

Vauxhall wants customers to know that driving their Viva Rocks in congested traffic has been made easier with a special driving mode, called ‘City’, which “reduces steering effort to assist with tight maneuvers in heavy city traffic”. Moreover, this jacked-up version of the Viva also supports cruise control with speed management, and Park Assist.

VW Amarok Gains Cheaper Three-Pedal Option For Manual-Labor Fans 21

Posted by Michael Karkafiris in new cars, Trucks, UK, VW, VW Amarok on 11 21st, 2017

Volkswagen UK has expanded the Amarok range with the addition of a cheaper manual gearbox option in combination with the 201hp diesel engine.

This brings down the entry price of the VW Amarok by over £650 to £25,600 (excluding VAT and other fees). The new base model is available in Trendline trim and selectable all-wheel drive system.

The new manual VW Amarok remains rear-driven until the driver decides to engage the front axle at the touch of a button. The manual gearbox also enabled VW to add a low-range option too, which allows the German pickup truck to perform better off-road.

The 3.0-liter V6 diesel engine produces 201hp (204PS) between 3,000 and 4,500rpm, as well as a maximum torque of 368lb-ft (500Nm) between 1,250 and 2,750rpm. Fuel economy is a combined 32.5mpg UK while CO2 emissions are rated at 229g/km.

The addition of a manual gearbox also made the Amarok a bit quicker off the line, with 0-62mph (100km/h) coming in 8.4 seconds against the 9.1 of the automatic counterpart while top speed is set at 119mph.

Volkswagen UK will also add an even cheaper manual Amarok to the range with a 163PS diesel engine early next year. First deliveries of the new manual Amarok V6 are expected in February 2018.

2018 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Facelift: Still The Best Car In The World? 21

The bid daddy of Mercedes has been thoroughly updated for MY2018 with new tech and powertrains but is this enough to fend off challengers in the luxury segment?

The German company kept visual changes to a minimum, with redesigned LED lights, a new radiator grille and bumpers being the main differences but the mechanical part of the update is a whole different story.

That’s because the new Mercedes S-Class is the company’s first model to feature their all-new straight-six powertrains, both in petrol and in diesel formats.

The 3.0-liter petrol engine can be found in the S 450 and S 500 models, producing 367hp and 435hp respectively. As for the 3.0-liter diesel unit, the figures are 286hp/442lb-ft for the S 350d and 340hp/516lb-ft for the S 400d. All models use the 9G-Tronic automatic transmission, bar the V12 models.

The adoption of the 48-volt electrical architecture also makes the S-Class compatible with a range of cutting-edge driver assistance features, including a semi-autonomous function.

The lovely interior mixes luxury and technology in a very impressive way, featuring a pair of new 12.3-inch digital displays that are housed under the same glass panel while the new steering wheel offers better ergonomics thanks to its touch-sensitive controls.

For many the Mercedes S-Class is the best automobile in the world but is this true for the latest model? Let’s find out what Carwow and Mat Watson have to say about it.

Cyclist Hits Unsuspecting Man Working On BMW, Cursing Ensues 20
Nov
Posted by Sergiu Tudose in Accidents, Bicycles, Offbeat News, UK, video on 11 20th, 2017

It might not be as deadly as a car, but hitting somebody with your bicycle is still very dangerous, especially if the victim is already in a compromised position.

The man in the video was crouching down while working on an E60 BMW 5-Series, completely unaware there was an out of control cyclist heading his way.

The fact that he had his head all the way inside the wheel well seems to have resulted in some type of head injury, although it’s hard to assess if there was anything wrong with him afterwards.

He immediately started cursing out the cyclist, so be mindful of the language while playing this video.

On one hand, we can certainly understand his anger. Suddenly banging your head on your own car can’t be pleasant, especially when someone else is to blame and you’re still in somewhat of a shock. Then again, obscene language and violence (he later took his frustration out on the bicycle) aren’t appropriate either.

Do note that some people are suggesting this incident was staged, which is a possibility. We’d actually prefer it if it was genuine though, and the guy on the bike didn’t crash into that man on purpose.

UK To Introduce Fully-Autonomous Cars By 2021 20
Nov
Posted by Brad Anderson in Autonomous, Reports, Tech, UK on 11 20th, 2017

Sweeping changes to regulations in the UK are set to pave the way for fully-autonomous vehicles to be on the country’s streets by 2021.

This week, Chancellor Philip Hammond is expected to announce regulation changes in the budget which will permit driverless cars to test on public roads without any human operator inside or outside the vehicle. Additionally, the vehicles won’t be hit with the same legal constraints as other EU countries or the U.S.

The Guardian reports that Hammond wants to ensure that the UK is at the forefront of technological changes in the car industry as the nation prepares to leave the European Union in 2019.

Speaking about the forthcoming changes, chief executive of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, Mike Hawes, said it will be good for the country.

“We support government’s measures to make the UK one of the best places in the world to develop, test and sell connected and autonomous vehicles. These vehicles will transform our roads and society, dramatically reducing accidents and saving thousands of lives every year, while adding billions of pounds to the economy. We look forward to continuing industry’s collaboration with government to ensure the UK can be among the first to grasp the benefits of this exciting new technology,” he said.

In-Depth Review Finds Very Few Faults With 2018 Toyota Prius 18

If you’re in the market a practical and fuel efficient hatchback, the only thing that might keep you from considering buying a Prius straight up could be its looks.

Let’s face it, it does look futuristic, but it’s not the prettiest thing on the road. However, if you move past this aspect (or better yet you like the way it looks, since this is highly subjective), you’ll likely end up enjoying your purchase.

The 2018 Prius is a very practical car, with plenty of room for luggage, comfortable seats, impressive safety tech, lots of storage spaces and a well laid out cabin with strong visibility ahead and around the pillars.

On the road, the Prius is great around town, with excellent maneuverability. However, there were some downsides such as the overly sensitive brakes, road noise and poor rearwards visibility. It’s also not very quick, so if you’re looking for effortless motorway overtaking capability, you’d better look somewhere else.

On the plus side, Toyota made the 2018 Prius handle surprisingly well, with decent grip and steering feel. On top of that, there’s a ‘Power’ mode that improves performance, although it’s not going to help you win any drag races. But, at the end of the day, it’s a Prius, so this doesn’t rank very highly on its potential customers’ list anyway, does it?

Volvo UK has made a new petrol engine available to its flagship saloon and estate models, with the S90 T4 priced from £34,500 and the V90 T4 from £36,500.

The four-cylinder petrol unit is mated to an automatic gearbox as standard, producing 190 PS (187 HP) while offering combined fuel economy figures of 42.2 UK mpg (35.1 US mpg) in the S90 and 40.9 UK mpg (34 US mpg) in the V90.

“Petrol is becoming an increasingly popular choice with motorists, including business users,” said Volvo Car UK exec, Steve Beattie, who expects strong interest in the S90 and V90 T4.

The T4 versions can be purchased from the entry-level Momentum to the high-spec Inscription Pro, and share the same level of standard features as the diesel and petrol-electric hybrid models, such as the Sensus 9″ touchscreen system, sat-nav with Real Time Traffic Information, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian, cyclist and large animal detection, Pilot Assist semi-autonomous drive technology, LED headlights, dual-zone climate control and leather upholstery.

Both the T4-powered S90 as well as the V90 are available to order now.

Prices Of German Cars In UK Could Increase 10 Per Cent Post-Brexit 15
Nov
Posted by Brad Anderson in DIHK, Reports, SMMT, UK on 11 15th, 2017

A Berlin trade body has warned that the price of German cars sold in the UK could increase by 10 per cent if a trade deal isn’t reached between the UK and EU.

Under World Trade Organisation rules, German cars sold in the UK will be hit with a 10 per cent duty. According to Association of German Chambers of Industry and Commerce (DIHK) member Steffen Behm, this would force either the British importer or the German exporter to pay the levy. In either case, it would hurt the hip pocket of customers.

Auto Express says that 950,000 German vehicles worth a combined €20.8 billion ($24.5 billion) were imported to the UK in 2016.

Factoring in a 10 per cent duty, that would add €2.08 billion ($2.45 billion) to the annual bill.

The sentiments of the DIHK have been supported by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). Speaking on the issue, SMMT president Gareth Jones said the UK government must look to protect the automotive sector.

“The Government has – commendably – put industrial strategy at the heart of business and the department for business. It does so as it faces its toughest challenge – leaving the EU. We must make the right decisions: on trade, on regulations and on business competitiveness,” Jones said.

Man United Star Reversed His Range Rover Into Teammate’s £200k Bentley 14

After passing his driving test only a year ago, Manchester United left-back Luke Shaw is reported to have reversed his Range Rover into his teammate Phil Jones’ Bentley Continental Supersports.

The incident allegedly took place at the club’s Carrington training base last month, after the team’s 2-0 away win at Swansea.

A source told The Sun that Shaw’s “concentration slipped and he clattered into Jones’s car. He can afford the repair bill and there’s no hard feelings. Nothing seems to be going poor Luke’s way.”

In the end, it appears that both cars had only minor damage and that nobody was hurt because of the shunt. As seen in an article from the Daily Mail, Shaw has been spotted driving an Overfinch-tuned Range Rover recently, so it’s possible that’s the car he used to back into his teammate’s 700 HP Bentley.

Shaw has currently fallen out of favor with United manager Jose Mourinho, making just two appearances and no starts this season as the team is looking to upgrade his position.
