Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 Coming In 2019 With 700+ HP 16

Ford has confirmed one of the worst kept secrets in Detroit, a new Mustang Shelby GT500 is coming to battle the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1.

Described as the “pinnacle of Mustang performance,” the GT500 will be a fast-back coupe that is twice as powerful as the original 1967 model. Ford is keeping detailed specifications under wraps but the automaker confirmed the car is projected to produce more than 700 hp (522 kW).

Power will be provided by a supercharged V8 engine and it will enable the Mustang to become the most powerful street-legal production model Ford has ever produced. The GT500 will even surpass the output of the Ford GT which has a 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 that develops 647 hp (482 kW).

The outrageous performance won’t be limited to the engine as Ford says the Mustang has been “engineered to stand apart on roadways and race tracks.” That’s pretty vague but the company said we can expect “innovative track technologies, performance hardware, plus aggressive and functional track-tuned styling.”

The Mustang Shelby GT500 will be launched next year and an assortment of leaks and rumors have suggested the car will have a supercharged 5.2-liter V8 engine that is paired to a dual-clutch transmission. We can also expect carbon-ceramic brakes, a speedometer that tops out at 214 mph (344 km/h), and a dedicated Drag Strip mode – among other things.

Ford declined to say when the car will be unveiled but we can expect to learn more about the model in the coming months.

Following the unveiling of the 2019 Veloster and Veloster N, Hyundai has announced both models are headed to Forza Motorsport 7.

While the cars won’t go on sale in the United States until later this year, fans will have a chance to get behind the wheel tomorrow as part of a free downloadable content pack. Hyundai says the cars have been rendered in exacting detail and players can explore the upcoming hatchback as well as customize the vehicle with new wheels as well as various performance upgrades.

In the future, Forza Motorsport 7 players can expect additional Veloster content including “in-game opportunities such as Rivals events.”

Hyundai Motor America chief marketing officer Dean Evans said, “It’s thrilling to collaborate with Microsoft and Turn 10 again to put the next-gen Veloster in Forza Motorsport 7.” He went on to say the game has a “vibrant and active community of auto enthusiasts” and noted this “diverse group is reflective of the customers we want to reach with Veloster, and we’re excited to put them behind the wheel, starting tomorrow.”

As a refresher, the 2019 Veloster will be available with three engines that have outputs ranging from 147 hp (109 kW) to 275 hp (205 kW).

2019 Mercedes-AMG CLS 53 Is The New Cool Kid On The Block 15
Jan

Mercedes-AMG taps into the electrified market for the first time with a new range of cars that wear the ’53’ moniker.

One of them is the CLS 53 4Matic+, a range-topping model of the third-gen CLS, which has a more aggressive exterior design, and sportier trim in the cabin.

The biggest change, however, lies beneath its pretty skin, where motivation comes from a 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged six-cylinder  engine, with a starter-alternator that feeds the 48-volt electrical system.

The combined output of 456hp and 567lb-ft (769Nm) of torque is channeled to all four corners through a 9-speed auto. Naught to 62mph (100km/h) takes only 4.5sec in the mild hybrid, and top speed is limited to 167mph (270km/h) with the optional AMG Driver’s package, or 155mph (250km/h) without it.

Deep-pocketed enthusiasts will get to order the new Mercedes-AMG CLS 53 4Matic+ in the coming months, when they will likely spend close to $100,000 in the US of A, given that the old model, which can still be had here, starts from $75,150.

Until the top-of-the-line CLS goes on sale, though, it can be viewed live at the 2018 Detroit Auto Show, where it will remain until January 28. It can also be seen on video, as it celebrates its dynamic debut in the first commercial.

Apollo IE Screams Through The Streets Of Hong Kong 15

If looks are anything to go by, the Apollo Intensa Emozione (IE) could be the first model from a new supercar manufacturer that may actually have an impact on the industry.

Of course, it is just early days at the moment but the Apollo IE has created some serious online fanfare since its premiere, fanfare which is commonly limited to new vehicles from Pagani and Koenigsegg.

Its design is the most obvious reason for the hype. Looking more like a movie prop that a production vehicle, the IE pushes the boundaries of what’s possible and makes almost every other supercar and hypercar appear benign. And then there’s this engine!

Power comes from a naturally-aspirated 6.3-liter V12, sourced from the Ferrari F12, albeit now upgraded with custom internals.

Recently filmed taking to the streets of Hong Kong, we can’t help but be reminded of a particularly memorable Pagani Zonda Cinque video that depicted the desirable Italian exotic also cruising on a Hong Kong highway at night.

Do you think the IE could become this decade’s Zonda?

Ford’s Bringing Back The Mach 1 As An Electric Performance SUV 15
Jan

Between the new Ranger, the Bullitt Mustang, and the Edge ST, Ford has plenty of new metal to showcase at the Detroit Auto Show this year. But the one that’s sparked our imagination the most isn’t even there.

Alongside all the new models revealed, Ford announced a new performance SUV in the pipeline. It’ll be all-electric, and it’ll be called the Mach 1.

Recognize the name? It was a variant of the Mustang sold back in the 1970s, and again a few years after the turn of the millennium. This time it won’t be on a pony car, though, adopting a much larger (or at least taller) form – ostensibly to take on the Tesla Model X.

The project is being developed by Ford Team Edison, the automaker’s electric propulsion division, and is set to debut sometime in 2020. More than that, we don’t know at the moment, but the Blue Oval has released this minute-long teaser video to drum up a little excitement.

Lexus Drops One Last LF-1 Limitless Teaser Before The Big Reveal 14

Of all the new concepts that’ll be unveiled at the Detroit Auto Show this week, one of those we’re looking forward to seeing the most is the Lexus LF-1 Limitless.

Billed as a “premium flagship crossover,” the concept has been the subject of two successive teasers until now, and Lexus has just released yet another.

The video is still far from a full reveal, stopping short from showing the overall shape. It does, however, give us a glimpse at some of the show car’s details, including the innovative headlights, mesh grille, split-five-spoke wheels, part of the tailgate, and the techy-looking center console controls.

From what we can see so far, it looks like it could be a real stunner, even if it is a crossover and not, say, a supercar to succeed the LFA. But then, if recent history (starting with Porsche and the Cayenne) has shown us anything, it’s that luxury crossovers are the big sellers bringing in the cash that allow automakers to make the supercars.

Entry-Level Civic, Leon And i30 Engage In Budget Hatchbacks’ Drag Race 14
Jan

Usually, when you hear about a drag race, you imagine powerful stock or tuned cars going against each other. Well, this one is different.

That’s because Carwow brought together the Honda Civic, Hyundai i30 and Seat Leon, though not the respective Type R, N or Cupra variants as one would expect, but their base versions. They might not be that exciting, but they are the ones that sell in high volumes, so it’s interesting to see how fast they really are and how they compare against each other.

The Civic has the smallest engine here, a 1.0-liter turbo, while both the i30 and the Leon have 1.4-liter turbos. The Leon is the most powerful, rated at 150 horses, followed by the i30 with 140 and the Civic with 130. The Honda also happens to be the heaviest car here, which, on paper, puts it at a disadvantage.

So, which of the three hatchbacks won this budget-friendly drag race? Scroll down and find out.

Hyundai Ioniq Electric Is Not That Exciting, But It Ticks All The Right Boxes 14
Jan

If you’re in the market for an affordable electric car, there’s a number of options to choose from, from the Nissan Leaf to the Volkswagen e-Golf. Hyundai has recently started offering their own zero-emission hatchback as well, in the form of the Ioniq Electric, which joins the Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid versions of the same car.

It has a conservative styling both on the outside and inside, which makes a huge difference over the somewhat flashy BMW i3, but it can fit three adults at the back, although the one in the middle seat won’t be very happy.

The Ioniq Electric also has a decent boot space that’s said to be bigger than what you’d get in a Volkswagen e-Golf, but slightly smaller than the Ioniq Hybrid.

CarBuyer recently took one out for a short review, finding that it’s as quiet as expected on the go. Still, the wind and tire noise coming in at higher speeds could make you forget you’re sitting in an EV.

As far as the technical bits go, naught to 60mph (96km/h) takes a decent 10sec, and you’re going to need 4.5 hours to fully charge the battery, or up to 12 when using a domestic 3-pin socket, which allows you to travel for a claimed range of 124 miles (199km). There’s a fast-charge option as well, which fills the battery up to 80 percent in just 30 minutes.

Money-wise, the Hyundai Ioniq Electric comes at around £25,000 ($33,885) in the United Kingdom, after the government electric car grant, which makes it more affordable than an e-Golf, but if money is a concern, then perhaps you may want to check out the Nissan Leaf, too.

The Audi TT RS Is The Perfect Entry Point To The 400HP Club, If You Can Afford It 14
Jan
Posted by Michael Karkafiris in audi, Audi TT-RS, Audi Videos, Film, video on 01 14th, 2018

Harnessing 400hp on the road requires some skill, but the 2018 Audi TT RS makes it seem easier than you might think.

The combination of the Quattro all-wheel drive with the seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission means that grip is always there and shifting a gear is just a pull of a paddle away.

Add to that the multi-awarded five-cylinder 2.5-liter turbo engine that makes 400hp and 354lb-ft and one of the most characterful soundtracks on the segment, and the TT RS suddenly becomes a more appealing package than what its style-heavy approach might suggest.

Straight-line performance is easily comparable with much more expensive metal, as the German coupe can hit 60mph from a standstill in just 3.6 seconds and it won’t stop accelerating until it hits 174mph if you tick the optional Dynamic Plus package.

Despite the impressive numbers, the TT RS remains a friendly car to drive fast, presenting easy-to-control understeer close to the limit. It might not be the most fascinating sports car out there, but it makes really fast progress with the least amount of effort from the driver.

As Carlos Lago from Edmunds explains, the TT RS is an impressive car, but at its price range, the competition is really stiff.

Here’s A Love Letter To The BMW E60 M5’s Epic V10 Engine 13
Jan
Posted by Michael Karkafiris in BMW, BMW M, BMW M5, BMW Videos, Film, video on 01 13th, 2018

Just in case you needed a reminder of how incredibly awesome the 5.0-liter V10 engine in the BMW E60 M5 was, here’s a little something that should bring back those memories.

Codenamed S85, the naturally aspirated 10-cylinder engine was designed specifically for this M5 (and its two-door counterpart, the M6), producing 500hp (507PS) and 380lb-ft (520Nm) of torque.

The US-spec E60 M5s were the only ones in the world to be offered with a manual six-speed gearbox, as the rest of the world got a seven-speed SMG automated manual transmission only, which is easily the weakest link in a car that’s been universally praised for its performance and handling.

Featuring a compression ratio of 12.0:1 and able to rev up to 8,250rpm, the S85 makes the E60 M5 a true screamer, giving the four-door super-saloon a proper supercar-like soundtrack that is so missing from cars these days.

In the following video, Carwow has a go in a BMW E60 M5, reminding us of its epic engine and the beautiful music it made.

Edmunds Buys Its Own Tesla Model 3, Delivers First Impressions 13

After placing a reservation in early 2016, Edmunds received its own Tesla Model 3 to put through its long-term testing process.

As with all the cars in this first production batch, this Model 3 is the Long Range version that also features the mandatory-for-now Premium Upgrades pack as well as the Autopilot semi-autonomous system. All this equipment increased the price of Edmunds’ Model 3 up from the base $44,000 to $55,000.

First impressions of the Model 3 are more than positive, with the car being pretty quick, while the chassis feels sorted and showing off its good balance and low center of gravity.

The biggest talking point however is the ergonomics of the minimalist cabin; cramming everything into a big, landscape-oriented touchscreen requires more time than usual for the driver to learn where everything is. But even when he does, things like not having a speedometer ahead of the driver remain less than ideal.

The Model 3 is definitely the brand’s make-or-break car, but the first impressions so far point at a well-sorted compact saloon that has that special Tesla character people seem to like so much.

Is The Mercedes-AMG A45 A Match For Audi’s RS3 Sedan? 13
Jan

Two of the hottest compact cars on sale today, the Mercedes-AMG A45 and Audi RS3 Sedan, were taken to the track to settle their differences.

The setting is the Rock Raceway circuit in South Africa, with its 300m (984ft) long straight being more than enough to prove which of the two is faster.

Mercedes-AMG’s A45 hot hatch is slightly less powerful than its Audi rival. It has a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbocharged engine that delivers 381PS (376hp) and 475Nm (350lb-ft) of torque, taking 4.2sec to sprint from rest to 100km/h (62mph), and toping out at 250km/h (155mph).

On the other hand, the Audi RS3 Sedan makes use of a 2.5-liter five-cylinder rated at 400PS (394hp) and 480Nm (354lb-ft) of torque. Naught to 100km/h (62mph) takes 4.1sec, and top speed is electronically limited to 250km/h (155mph).

There’s another aspect worth mentioning, and that’s the A45’s weight advantage, but is this enough to make up for the power deficit compared to the RS3? Just click on the video below and find out.

2018 Nissan Qashqai Reviewed: Still The King Of Compact SUVs? 13

Posted by Michael Karkafiris in Film, nissan, Nissan Qashqai, Nissan Videos, UK, video on 01 13th, 2018

Nissan’s best-selling Qashqai has received a mid-life facelift in order to deal with the ever-increasing competition.

The revamp consists of a revised exterior that includes new bumpers, the brand’s V-Motion grille, a new headlamp design that incorporates the DRLs and redesigned LED taillights. New alloy designs as well as new colors have also been added to the range.

The interior is made out of better-quality materials and also features new, more supportive seats as well as a new steering wheel. Nissan has also added more sound insulation, additional sealing around the front doors and a thicker rear glass for better insulation against NVH (noise, vibration and harshness).

Perhaps the highlight of the facelifted Qashqai is the addition of Nissan’s ProPilot semi-autonomous system in the range, which combines the Lane Keep Assist, Intelligent Cruise Control and Traffic Jam Pilot systems.

Those looking for a fun to drive SUV might be left disappointed from the Qashqai, but Nissan’s best-seller remains one of the most relaxing places to sit in when driving long distances.

Are these revisions enough to keep the 2018 Qashqai ahead of the competition? Carwow put one to the test to find out.
