Entry-Level Civic, Leon And i30 Engage In Budget Hatchbacks’ Drag Race 14

Usually, when you hear about a drag race, you imagine powerful stock or tuned cars going against each other. Well, this one is different.

That’s because Carwow brought together the Honda Civic, Hyundai i30 and Seat Leon, though not the respective Type R, N or Cupra variants as one would expect, but their base versions. They might not be that exciting, but they are the ones that sell in high volumes, so it’s interesting to see how fast they really are and how they compare against each other.

The Civic has the smallest engine here, a 1.0-liter turbo, while both the i30 and the Leon have 1.4-liter turbos. The Leon is the most powerful, rated at 150 horses, followed by the i30 with 140 and the Civic with 130. The Honda also happens to be the heaviest car here, which, on paper, puts it at a disadvantage.

So, which of the three hatchbacks won this budget-friendly drag race? Scroll down and find out.

Hyundai Ioniq Electric Is Not That Exciting, But It Ticks All The Right Boxes 14

If you’re in the market for an affordable electric car, there’s a number of options to choose from, from the Nissan Leaf to the Volkswagen e-Golf. Hyundai has recently started offering their own zero-emission hatchback as well, in the form of the Ioniq Electric, which joins the Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid versions of the same car.

It has a conservative styling both on the outside and inside, which makes a huge difference over the somewhat flashy BMW i3, but it can fit three adults at the back, although the one in the middle seat won’t be very happy.

The Ioniq Electric also has a decent boot space that’s said to be bigger than what you’d get in a Volkswagen e-Golf, but slightly smaller than the Ioniq Hybrid.

CarBuyer recently took one out for a short review, finding that it’s as quiet as expected on the go. Still, the wind and tire noise coming in at higher speeds could make you forget you’re sitting in an EV.

As far as the technical bits go, naught to 60mph (96km/h) takes a decent 10sec, and you’re going to need 4.5 hours to fully charge the battery, or up to 12 when using a domestic 3-pin socket, which allows you to travel for a claimed range of 124 miles (199km). There’s a fast-charge option as well, which fills the battery up to 80 percent in just 30 minutes.

Money-wise, the Hyundai Ioniq Electric comes at around £25,000 ($33,885) in the United Kingdom, after the government electric car grant, which makes it more affordable than an e-Golf, but if money is a concern, then perhaps you may want to check out the Nissan Leaf, too.

The Audi TT RS Is The Perfect Entry Point To The 400HP Club, If You Can Afford It 14

Harnessing 400hp on the road requires some skill, but the 2018 Audi TT RS makes it seem easier than you might think.

The combination of the Quattro all-wheel drive with the seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission means that grip is always there and shifting a gear is just a pull of a paddle away.

Add to that the multi-awarded five-cylinder 2.5-liter turbo engine that makes 400hp and 354lb-ft and one of the most characterful soundtracks on the segment, and the TT RS suddenly becomes a more appealing package than what its style-heavy approach might suggest.

Straight-line performance is easily comparable with much more expensive metal, as the German coupe can hit 60mph from a standstill in just 3.6 seconds and it won’t stop accelerating until it hits 174mph if you tick the optional Dynamic Plus package.

Despite the impressive numbers, the TT RS remains a friendly car to drive fast, presenting easy-to-control understeer close to the limit. It might not be the most fascinating sports car out there, but it makes really fast progress with the least amount of effort from the driver.

As Carlos Lago from Edmunds explains, the TT RS is an impressive car, but at its price range, the competition is really stiff.

Here’s A Love Letter To The BMW E60 M5’s Epic V10 Engine 13

Just in case you needed a reminder of how incredibly awesome the 5.0-liter V10 engine in the BMW E60 M5 was, here’s a little something that should bring back those memories.

Codenamed S85, the naturally aspirated 10-cylinder engine was designed specifically for this M5 (and its two-door counterpart, the M6), producing 500hp (507PS) and 380lb-ft (520Nm) of torque.

The US-spec E60 M5s were the only ones in the world to be offered with a manual six-speed gearbox, as the rest of the world got a seven-speed SMG automated manual transmission only, which is easily the weakest link in a car that’s been universally praised for its performance and handling.

Featuring a compression ratio of 12.0:1 and able to rev up to 8,250rpm, the S85 makes the E60 M5 a true screamer, giving the four-door super-saloon a proper supercar-like soundtrack that is so missing from cars these days.

In the following video, Carwow has a go in a BMW E60 M5, reminding us of its epic engine and the beautiful music it made.

Edmunds Buys Its Own Tesla Model 3, Delivers First Impressions 13

After placing a reservation in early 2016, Edmunds received its own Tesla Model 3 to put through its long-term testing process.

As with all the cars in this first production batch, this Model 3 is the Long Range version that also features the mandatory-for-now Premium Upgrades pack as well as the Autopilot semi-autonomous system. All this equipment increased the price of Edmunds’ Model 3 up from the base $44,000 to $55,000.

First impressions of the Model 3 are more than positive, with the car being pretty quick, while the chassis feels sorted and showing off its good balance and low center of gravity.

The biggest talking point however is the ergonomics of the minimalist cabin; cramming everything into a big, landscape-oriented touchscreen requires more time than usual for the driver to learn where everything is. But even when he does, things like not having a speedometer ahead of the driver remain less than ideal.

The Model 3 is definitely the brand’s make-or-break car, but the first impressions so far point at a well-sorted compact saloon that has that special Tesla character people seem to like so much.

Is The Mercedes-AMG A45 A Match For Audi’s RS3 Sedan? 13

Two of the hottest compact cars on sale today, the Mercedes-AMG A45 and Audi RS3 Sedan, were taken to the track to settle their differences.

The setting is the Rock Raceway circuit in South Africa, with its 300m (984ft) long straight being more than enough to prove which of the two is faster.

Mercedes-AMG’s A45 hot hatch is slightly less powerful than its Audi rival. It has a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbocharged engine that delivers 381PS (376hp) and 475Nm (350lb-ft) of torque, taking 4.2sec to sprint from rest to 100km/h (62mph), and toping out at 250km/h (155mph).

On the other hand, the Audi RS3 Sedan makes use of a 2.5-liter five-cylinder rated at 400PS (394hp) and 480Nm (354lb-ft) of torque. Naught to 100km/h (62mph) takes 4.1sec, and top speed is electronically limited to 250km/h (155mph).

There’s another aspect worth mentioning, and that’s the A45’s weight advantage, but is this enough to make up for the power deficit compared to the RS3? Just click on the video below and find out.

2018 Nissan Qashqai Reviewed: Still The King Of Compact SUVs? 13

Posted by Michael Karkafiris in Film, nissan, Nissan Qashqai, Nissan Videos, UK, video on 01 13th, 2018

Nissan’s best-selling Qashqai has received a mid-life facelift in order to deal with the ever-increasing competition.

The revamp consists of a revised exterior that includes new bumpers, the brand’s V-Motion grille, a new headlamp design that incorporates the DRLs and redesigned LED taillights. New alloy designs as well as new colors have also been added to the range.

The interior is made out of better-quality materials and also features new, more supportive seats as well as a new steering wheel. Nissan has also added more sound insulation, additional sealing around the front doors and a thicker rear glass for better insulation against NVH (noise, vibration and harshness).

Perhaps the highlight of the facelifted Qashqai is the addition of Nissan’s ProPilot semi-autonomous system in the range, which combines the Lane Keep Assist, Intelligent Cruise Control and Traffic Jam Pilot systems.

Those looking for a fun to drive SUV might be left disappointed from the Qashqai, but Nissan’s best-seller remains one of the most relaxing places to sit in when driving long distances.

Are these revisions enough to keep the 2018 Qashqai ahead of the competition? Carwow put one to the test to find out.

Is The Skoda Karoq The Compact SUV You Were Looking For? 13
Jan
Posted by Cristian Gnaticov in Film, reviews, Skoda, Skoda Karoq, Skoda Videos, video on 01 13th, 2018

Consumers flock to crossovers and SUVs and, as a result, automakers launch one model after another in order to satisfy the demand. Skoda’s proposal in the compact segment is the recently launched Karoq, which replaces the Yeti.

The Karoq slots under the Kodiaq and shares its platform with the Seat Ateca, but it is far more than a reshaped Spanish SUV, as the latest video review points out.

It’s a well equipped vehicle, with an interior that resembles that of its larger sibling, lots of storage spaces, cup holders, and places to store your mobile devices. Things aren’t that cramped either on the rear bench, and its boot has a decent size for a car in the compact segment.

The Karoq is front-wheel drive, but Skoda offers the option of an all-wheel drive system on certain models. Customers can currently choose between four engines: two petrols, with 115PS (113hp) and 150PS (148hp), and two diesels, with the same amount of power, but more torque, which can be mated to a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed DSG automatic transmission.

A more powerful 2.0-liter TDI with 190PS (187hp) will be offered later this year, and a performance-oriented vRS variant might be on the cards.

Pricing start from €24,290 ($29,122) in Germany, which makes it €3,800 ($4,556) more expensive than the base Nissan Qashqai, but opting for the range-topper, equipped with all optional extras, sees the price skyrocket to €45,000 ($53,951).

All things considered, should you put the Skoda Karoq in your list if you’re out shopping for a compact SUV? Scroll down and watch the video to find out.

Mercedes Unimog Will Take You To Places No Other Vehicle Can 13

When you think of a tough vehicle, you probably don’t think about the Unimog – which is a shame, really, because it has this incredible go-anywhere attitude and offers great reliability and ease of maintenance, if you know what you’re doing.

Mercedes originally designed it to be an alternative to tractors, offering the ability to be driven at higher speeds on roads than other agricultural machines.

The huge ground clearance, courtesy of its portal axles, combined with a selectable all-wheel drive and a frame that flexes as part of the suspension, made sure that the Unimog will almost take you and your gear anywhere, and that’s what made the Unimog so popular with farmers and armies around the globe.

This particular example is an army-surplus vehicle bought by the guys in Dirt Every Day, with the goal to drive it from Indiana to Memphis, Tennessee.

With the Unimog being able to cruise up to speeds of 50mph, it’s not the ideal road-trip vehicle, but the fun starts when the tarmac stops and that’s what this beast is all about.

Track-Focused Crown Vic Is Ready To Serve, Protect And Entertain 13
Jan
Posted by Sergiu Tudose in Film, Ford, Police Cars, reviews, tuning, video on 01 13th, 2018

While the Ford Crown Victoria isn’t exactly known for its racing prowess, this 2008 Interceptor looks just about ready to do exactly that.

What you’re looking at here is a heavily modified car, with a stripped out interior and multiple chassis and handling upgrades courtesy of Maximum Motorsports, Energy Suspension and Tokico.

The result is something that absolutely blew The Smoking Tire’s Matt Farah away with its steering feel, grip and high-revving nature. In fact, as soon as he got on the road, the word “NASCAR” immediately came out of his mouth.

He also used superlatives like “fat Miata”, “awesome” and “shockingly good”, which is quite an achievement considering how the engine was left mostly stock and the amount of horsepower produced wasn’t all that impressive.

The only thing missing from this Crown Vic, so to speak, was the rear seat, which could have made this car both fun and practical.

Saudi Arabia Holds Female-Focused Car Show Following End Of Driving Ban 12
Jan
Posted by Michael Gauthier in Film, Middle East, Reports, video on 01 12th, 2018

Saudi Arabia recently reversed a decision which prevented women from driving and now the country is hosting a car show designed specifically for them.

Reuters reports the show was held at the Le Mall in Jeddah and says “women flocked” to the event. A number of different vehicles were on display including models from Chevrolet, Nissan, Kia and Toyota. While they might not have been the flashy exotics people typically imagine in the Middle East, the event was focused on fuel-efficient vehicles.

There’s no word on how many people attended the event but Ghada al-Ali told the publication, “I’ve always been interested in cars, but we didn’t have the ability to drive.” She went on to say she’s interested in buying a car now that King Salman has lifted the ban on female drivers.

The news comes a particularly odd time as reports are suggesting Turkmenistan has banned women from driving in that country. AKI Press claims the ban was enacted in December and police are now beginning to enforce the law. This comes shortly after another odd report which claimed the country’s president wants to eliminate all of the black cars in the country’s capital of Ashgabat.

Nissan Drops Another Detroit Crossover Concept Teaser 12

Nissan has released the third and final teaser video for their upcoming crossover concept which will debut at the North American International Auto Show next week.

The company is staying tight-lipped about the model but the latest clip reveals the concept will be a relatively small crossover that features aggressive side skirts and massive alloy wheels. We can also see the model will have boomerang-shaped headlights, a rakish windscreen, and a tailgate-mounted spoiler.

One of the more interesting aspects of the teaser video is that it shows the concept has something mounted on the roof. Since the concept is a crossover, it would be natural to assume this is a roof rack but Nissan has been touting the model’s “intelligent mobility” technology so it’s possible that the mysterious object could be related to autonomous driving technology.

Regardless of what’s on the roof, the video also gives us a glimpse of the interior and it shows the concept will have a minimalist cabin will have a rectangular steering wheel. The traditional instrument cluster has also been jettisoned and replaced by a widescreen display that spans the width of the interior. The display also appears to have two side view displays and this suggests the side mirrors have been replaced by video cameras.

Tesla Model 3 Does 0 To 60 In Just 4.6 Seconds, 1/4-Mile Took 13.3 12
Jan
Posted by Sergiu Tudose in Electric Vehicles, Film, Tesla, Tesla Model 3, Tesla Videos, video on 01 12th, 2018

In case anyone was worried about whether or not the Tesla Model 3 can keep up with various petrol-powered sports saloons, the answer is a resounding yes.

According to a VBox test performed by Brooks from DragTimes, this Model 3 managed to sprint from a standstill to 60 mph (96 km/h) in approximately 4.66 seconds. That makes it quicker than the previous generation E90 BMW M3.

The car in question featured the Premium package and a bigger battery pack, but was otherwise stock, making these results even more impressive.

In fact, this car (with the 70 kWh battery pack) should have done 0 to 60 in 5.1 seconds, according to Tesla. Although seeing it do even better doesn’t exactly come as a shock.

We can only imagine how quick the upcoming dual-motor performance version will be, since it will also feature a Ludicrous mode like its Model S and X siblings.

Is A Maserati Levante Really Worth $20,000 More Than A BMW X5? 12

Posted by Sergiu Tudose in Film, Maserati, Maserati Levante, Maserati Videos, reviews, video on 01 12th, 2018

People looking for a stylish premium crossover with a posh badge can choose between many brands nowadays, one of them being Maserati.

The buy a Levante is the brand’s first-ever SUV, and it’s supposed to be sporty and at the same time elegant.

Doug DeMuro got hold of one and, well, let’s just say that he had more than a few reservations. His biggest issue with the Levante is the price tag: the model shown here is a base-spec version, yet it costs almost $20,000 more than an entry-level BMW X5.

Inside, the Levante has a few quirks, such as its pyramid-style center console dials or the fact that there is no physical button for the heated seats – you have to access the main infotainment screen first.

On a positive note, he really did enjoy driving it around, saying that it not only sounds great for a V6, but the ride quality is good and the handling is very impressive, too.
