Founded in 2004 by Malcolm Hogan, Jacksonville, Florida based AutomotiveAddicts.com was created for auto enthusiasts of all types. For the past 10 years AutomotiveAddicts.com has strived to give readers the most interesting automotive related material on the internet without recycling material from other networks. Whether you are looking for a meaningful review of new vehicle, an honest look at breaking automotive news, or helpful technical articles and information, AutomotiveAddicts.com is the place to go.

Times-Union

Automotive Addicts is also the founder of the Jacksonville Cars and Coffee event, hosting the monthly car show on the second Saturday of every month. The car show began at the St. John’s Town Center a little over five years ago, moving to the River City Shopping Center, Tinseltown, and finally back to the original location at the St. John’s Town Center. All locales had there pros, but none of them felt like home for the event.

In April of 2013, the Florida Times-Union approached the AutomotiveAddicts.com team and asked if they would consider hosting the event downtown at The Florida Times-Union headquarters at 1 Riverside Avenue. The location was ideal, central to the city, right on the waterfront and included a large covered parking area to accommodate the event in case of rain.

AutomotiveAddicts hosted the first Cars and Coffee at the Florida Times-Union on July 13, 2013. The new location was widely received by the Jacksonville car community. In a short amount of time the show began regularly attracting 400 plus cars and thousands of spectators, AutomotiveAddicts.com Cars and Coffee had found a home and solidified itself as one of Jacksonville’s premier car gatherings.

For many years now we have always wondered what would be the infotainment or control system to dominate the automotive industry. Though we may not know any time soon, or in our lifetime for that matter, but what we do know is Apple is getting into the car game to stir things up a bit and it might work.

CarPlay_Honda_Map_PRINT-sm

Apple is poised to change up the car game with their new CarPlay system, which we will actually start seeing in select vehicles before this year is out. CarPlay promises to bring the iPhone/iPad experience to your car with an easy-to-use touch-screen interface that you may already be familiar with provided you already have experience using an iPhone or iPad.

It was only a matter of time before we saw some form of the Apple OS X in cars and that day is closer than ever as the likings of BMW, Ferrari, Ford, GM, Honda, Hyundai, Jaguar – Land Rover, Kia, Mercedes-Benz, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Subaru and Volvo are all signed up for this new tech. The first iteration of the Apple CarPlay will debut this week at the Geneva Auto Show where Ferrari, Benz, and Volvo will be the very first adopters.

CarPlay_Honda_Music_PRINT-sm

Of course with any Apple product the integration between other Apple devices will be seamless as the CarPlay system promises to link or sync up with your iPhone 5, 5C and 5S with virtually ease. Siri will also be a big part of the system for unsurpassed voice recognition and virtual controls for your vehicle. Additionally, CarPlay could potentially be one of several supported platforms on top of others that auto makers choose from.

Things are already in motion for CarPlay as the next iOS 7 update will come with in-car support as new models launch with the integration built in.

For more information on Apple CarPlay and updates, Apple has setup their own web portal about the new system at http://www.apple.com/ios/carplay/.

Apple Rolls Out CarPlay Giving Drivers a Smarter, Safer & More Fun Way to Use iPhone in the Car

CarPlay Premieres with Leading Auto Manufacturers at the Geneva International Motor Show

GENEVA―March 3, 2014―Apple® today announced that leading auto manufacturers are rolling out CarPlay, the smarter, safer and more fun way to use iPhone® in the car. CarPlay gives iPhone users an incredibly intuitive way to make calls, use Maps, listen to music and access messages with just a word or a touch. Users can easily control CarPlay from the car’s native interface or just push-and-hold the voice control button on the steering wheel to activate Siri® without distraction. Vehicles from Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz and Volvo will premiere CarPlay to their drivers this week, while additional auto manufacturers bringing CarPlay to their drivers down the road include BMW Group, Ford, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai Motor Company, Jaguar Land Rover, Kia Motors, Mitsubishi Motors, Nissan Motor Company, PSA Peugeot Citroën, Subaru, Suzuki and Toyota Motor Corp.

“CarPlay has been designed from the ground up to provide drivers with an incredible experience using their iPhone in the car,” said Greg Joswiak, Apple’s vice president of iPhone and iOS Product Marketing. “iPhone users always want their content at their fingertips and CarPlay lets drivers use their iPhone in the car with minimized distraction. We have an amazing lineup of auto partners rolling out CarPlay, and we’re thrilled it will make its debut this week in Geneva.”

Apple has led consumer technology integration in the car for more than a decade. CarPlay brings your car and iPhone together for a thoughtful experience that lets drivers focus on driving, while also tapping into everything they want to do with their iPhone.

Once iPhone is connected to a vehicle with CarPlay integration, Siri helps you easily access your contacts, make calls, return missed calls or listen to voicemails. When incoming messages or notifications arrive, Siri provides an eyes-free experience by responding to requests through voice commands, by reading drivers’ messages and letting them dictate responses or simply make a call.

CarPlay makes driving directions more intuitive by working with Maps to anticipate destinations based on recent trips via contacts, emails or texts, and provides routing instructions, traffic conditions and ETA. You can also simply ask Siri and receive spoken turn-by-turn directions, along with Maps, which will appear on your car’s built-in display.

CarPlay gives drivers access to all of their music, podcasts, audiobooks and iTunes Radio℠ with easy navigation through listening choices from the car’s built-in controls or simply by asking Siri to pull up what you’d like to hear. CarPlay also supports select third-party audio apps including Spotify and iHeartRadio, so you can listen to your favorite radio services or sports broadcast apps while driving.

Pricing & Availability
Apple CarPlay is available as an update to iOS 7 and works with Lightning-enabled iPhones, including iPhone 5s, iPhone 5c and iPhone 5. CarPlay will be available in select cars shipping in 2014.

Apple designs Macs, the best personal computers in the world, along with OS X, iLife, iWork and professional software. Apple leads the digital music revolution with its iPods and iTunes online store. Apple has reinvented the mobile phone with its revolutionary iPhone and App Store, and is defining the future of mobile media and computing devices with iPad.

We brought you the all-new 2015 Lexus RC Coupe and Performance-oriented Lexus RC F Coupe packed with a 5.0-liter V8 engine several months ago. Now as the Geneva Auto Show boots up this week we bring you the all-new 2015 Lexus RC 350 F Sport coupe to round out the line of RC Coupe vehicles (RC 350, RC 350 F Sport, RC F).

720Fsport_07 Exterior_g_mid

There is no doubt that Lexus has been pushed into making a few more sporty cars not only in the looks department but also make the driving dynamics appeal to true auto enthusiasts looking for that hidden sports car side of Toyota over the course of many years. Now Lexus has broken out of its traditional skin somewhat to bring us the RC 350 in the F Sport trim featuring many traits from its RC F brethren only it gets the smooth 3.5-liter V6 engine with 306 horsepower mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission.

It’s a Trifecta! – F SPORT Completes All-New Lexus RC Coupe Line-up

  • RC 350 F SPORT joins RC 350 and RC F for 2015 Model Year
  • Adaptive Variable Suspension Adjusts Damping to Help Maximize Agility
  • 19-Inch Alloy Wheels Complement More Aggressive Exterior and Interior Design Features
February 28, 2014
GENEVA – Feb. 28, 2014 – And F SPORT makes three. Driving enthusiasts, get ready for more Lexus RC options from which to choose. When the all-new model launches in the U.S. this fall the 2015 Lexus RC 350 F SPORT will join the recently introduced RC 350 sport coupe and RC F performance model. The RC 350 F SPORT will make its world debut at the 2014 Geneva International Motor Show.
The RC is a stand-alone model rather than a two-door derivative of a sedan although it is built on the GS sedan platform. It has the same width as GS and a shorter wheelbase than the IS sedan to help achieve spirited handling and agility. The RC 350 F SPORT, based on the RC 350, will feature exclusive design elements and enhanced driving performance. The F SPORT’s dynamic upgrades include Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS) and the available Lexus Dynamic Handling (LDH) system. These features provide drivers with an even more rewarding and engaging driving experience.

Design
Readily identified by a model-specific “F” mesh design, the RC 350 F SPORT features a further evolution of the Lexus spindle grille.

The unique 19-inch F SPORT mesh alloy wheels feature machine-finish and dark metallic paint.

The RC 350 F SPORT also inherits a descendant of the innovative LFA driver’s meter with a moving center ring, and an F SPORT perforated leather steering wheel and shift knob. The interior design is completed by Silver Performance trim, an F SPORT-exclusive Rioja Red interior and seats with unique contrast stitching.

Driving Dynamics
Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS) is part of the F SPORT package. In response to driving operation, vehicle body motion and road surface conditions, AVS automatically and independently adjusts the performance of the damping at all four wheels. When the vehicle’s SPORT+ drive mode is selected, AVS changes to allow the driver to feel improved body control and precise responses to steering input.

The suspension enhancements of the RC 350 F SPORT are complimented by the available four-wheel steering benefits of the Lexus Dynamic Handling (LDH) system. This leading edge platform technology offers the integration of Dynamic Rear Steering (DRS) and Variable Gear Ratio Steering (VGRS).

Monitoring vehicle speed, steering direction and driver inputs, the system calculates the optimum angle for all four wheels. Using VGRS in the front and DRS in the rear, the system can independently manage both front and rear wheel steering angles to help improve turn-in response, rear grip, vehicle control and overall agility when cornering.

The LDH system monitors vehicle speed and yaw rate, steering angle and speed, and lateral G to calculate the required rear wheel steering input up to a maximum rear wheel angle of 2.0 degrees. The front and rear wheels turn in opposite directions at lower speeds, and in the same direction at higher speeds.

Lexus will introduce the RC 350 F SPORT at a press conference on March 4, at 8:45 a.m. Central European Time at Palexpo’s hall 4, stand number 4211.

“Do you even lift bro?” – That is pretty much the air of what this video is all about, pun intended. It seems Chevrolet has many things up their sleeves when it comes to laying down the best track time on the Nurburgring. Chevrolet is slowly releasing details on the ingenuity that went into the new 2014 Camaro Z/28 to help it shave seconds off of lap times, even when the vehicle is airborne.

camaro-z28-flying-car-mode

A system called “Flying Car Mode” enables the traction control to temporarily disable when ride-height sensors detect the vehicle being airborne. This in itself allows full throttle to be applied so when the vehicle lands it does not suffer from an negative torque or slow-down due to a conventional traction control system slowing the spin of the wheels from detecting an abrupt acceleration while off of the pavement. It is pretty ingenious if you think about it. Check out the video below for the demonstration and explanation.

Jaguar has been making some leaps, more in a literal sense just like the cat you may see prowling at your local zoo. That leaping forward momentum has set off a paradigm shift where Jaguar is breaking out to introduce a sports wagon, or what some may dub as a Sportbrake. Whatever you want to call it, ahem-Wagon, they have officially introduce their all-new Jaguar XFR-S Sportbrake off the heels of their successful prowling Jaguar XFR-S Sedan.

2014-jaguar-xfr-s-sportbrake-16

The all-new Jaguar XFR-S Sportbrake features the same 550-horsepower 5.0-liter supercharged V8 engine that we all have grown to love and cannot get enough of its intoxicating exhaust note. With the rear lugging around extra weight in the Sportbrake iteration of the Jaguar XFR-S, a few additional details were changed up to compensate and retain the sporty and track-worthy nature of this new growling cat sporting a larger backside. The rear suspension gets reworked with adaptive dampers tuned as to not diminish the XFR-S sedan’s well-praised handling dynamics in the new Sportbrake form.

2014-jaguar-xfr-s-sportbrake-22

As it stands, the all-new Jaguar XFR-S Sportbrake won’t be making it to this side of the pond (US) going the same way for the Jaguar XF Sportbrake… for now. Hopefully carrying the £82,495 price in the UK ($137,000 usd) will spark some interest here in the states of our lovely public who would not mind being a little bold and different to pilot the new Jaguar XFR-S Sportbrake.

JAGUAR TO UNVEIL NEW XFR-S SPORTBRAKE AT GENEVA INTERNATIONAL MOTOR SHOW

IN BRIEF

Jaguar’s 2015 Model Year XF range to be unveiled at the Geneva International Motor Show 2014
From real-world efficiency to Autobahn-storming performance, Jaguar’s 2015 model year XF range caters to every sensibility, without compromising on the luxury, refinement and versatility expected of a Jaguar
The XFR-S Sportbrake is the first high-performance R-S branded sports estate car
to be produced by Jaguar, with 550PS on tap and 1675 litres of rear load space
The XFR-S Sportbrake’s 5.0-litre supercharged V8 delivers 550PS and 680Nm of torque
New XFR-S Sportbrake priced at £82,495 in UK, with full 2015 MY XF range available to order from 01 April 2014

IN DETAIL

The XFR-S Sportbrake is the first high-performance sports estate car to be produced by Jaguar
The XFR-S Sportbrake builds on the already acclaimed XFR-S saloon – boasting the same power figures and levels of agility – with increased versatility and practicality
Its 5.0-litre supercharged V8 delivers 550PS of power and 680Nm of torque with the added benefit of 1675 litres of rear load space when the rear seats are folded flat
The XFR-S Sportbrake will sprint from zero to 60mph in 4.6 seconds (0-100km/h in 4.8 seconds) and on to an electronically limited top speed of 186mph (300km/h)
An eight-speed transmission with ‘Quickshift’ functionality enables optimal acceleration throughout the speed and rev ranges
The XFR-S Saloon’s chassis has been specifically retuned for the XFR-S Sportbrake
Active electronic differential and Dynamic Stability Control systems from the XFR-S Saloon enhance the XKR-S Sportbrake’s handling characteristics
Aerodynamic changes reduce lift compared to the standard Sportbrake and give the
XFR-S Sportbrake an assertive appearance
20-inch ‘Varuna’ forged alloy wheels – the same as those fitted to the XFR-S Saloon – are shod with bespoke tyres to maximise grip
Exclusive interior materials include carbon leather and contrasting highlight micro-piping and stitching
The third model in Jaguar’s ultra-high performance R-S range, the XFR-S Sportbrake joins its XFR-S saloon sibling in the exclusive 300km/h club and is a vivid expression of Jaguar’s longstanding and legendary sports saloon lineage. The XFR-S Sportbrake incorporates engineering features from both the XKR-S and the all-new F-TYPE two-seater sports car to create the most driver-focused, agile and responsive iteration of Jaguar’s award-winning XF model range.

“Combining real-world versatility with electrifying performance, the XFR-S Sportbrake brings Jaguar’s sporting character to life in a truly engaging car that will satisfy the most demanding of drivers while fitting into the most active of lifestyles.”

Dean Murden, Vehicle Programme Director, Jaguar

The XFR-S Sportbrake’s R-S powertrain, chassis and body enhancements enable the car to push the performance boundaries.

Electrifying performance is provided by the 5.0-litre supercharged V8 petrol engine, which now boasts 550PS and 680Nm – up 40PS and 55Nm respectively over its XFR installation. The increases have been achieved through revisions to the engine management system and optimisation of the flow of air both into and out of the engine.

Fitted with an eight-speed transmission incorporating Jaguar’s ‘Quickshift’ technology (developed for the F-TYPE), the increase in engine output allows the XFR-S Sportbrake to accelerate to 60mph in 4.6 seconds (0-100km/h in 4.8 seconds) and on to an electronically limited top speed of 186mph (300km/h).

In order to manage the extra rear mass of the XFR-S Sportbrake while retaining the sharp turn-in and response of the XFR-S Saloon, the Sportbrake’s rear suspension has been modified with revisions to both rear spring rates and the adaptive damper tune. These revisions work together to increase the feeling of connectivity with the road surface, allowing for confidence-inspiring handling and a supple, controlled ride. Recalibrated active electronic differential and Dynamic Stability Control settings have been tuned to work with the XFR-S Sportbrake’s modified rear suspension to allow the enthusiastic driver to make the most of the car’s huge potential.

Design

Reflecting the changes under the skin, the appearance of the XFR-S Sportbrake has been subtly modified in order to allow the car to achieve its full potential. As with the standard Jaguar Sportbrake, the combination of a flowing rear window graphic, rising waist and estate roofline lends the XFR-S Sportbrake a dynamic, broad-shouldered stance, while the extended roofline affords rear-seat passengers an additional 48mm of headroom and the seats offer both a 60:40 split fold function and integral ski hatch. Remote-fold levers inside the load-space opening allow the seats to be stowed flat quickly and easily, creating a cargo volume of up to 1675 litres. Rear lift has been reduced through the fitment of a spoiler mounted on the top of the rear hatch to manage the airflow off the top rear surface of the car.

The new, deeper front bumper incorporates larger lower central and side air intakes – the former framed in carbon fibre – in order to provide adequate airflow into the engine bay. A front splitter at the lower edge of the bumper provides the first of a number of aerodynamic changes designed to smooth the passage of the car through the air at very high speeds. The extended side sills and aeroblade mouldings behind the front wheels serve to create a sharp break-off point between the lower bodywork and the road surface in order to keep the airflow attached to the car’s sides for as long as possible. The same thinking dictated the deeper side mouldings behind the rear wheels. This extended rear bumper also incorporates a central, carbon fibre diffuser, deeper than the item found on the XFR and which travels further under the rear of the car to reduce lift.

The wider, six-spoke, 20-inch lightweight Varuna forged alloy wheels provide the XFR-S Sportbrake with a purposeful, broad-shouldered stance and come as standard with a dual finish. A ceramic polish is applied to the outer surfaces, its eye-catching appearance contrasting with inner gloss black areas. As an option the wheels can be supplied in either full gloss black or technical grey finishes.

The assertive appearance of the XFR-S Sportbrake is further enhanced through the use of gloss black trim in place of chrome around the grille, within the side vent, around the front and rear screens, windows and across the bootlid. The mesh in the front grilles is also a purposeful gloss black.

XFR-S Sportbrake customers can choose from an exterior palette comprising five colours: Ultra Blue, Ultimate Black, Stratus Grey, Polaris White and Italian Racing Red.

This colour palette is complemented inside the XFR-S Sportbrake with Warm Charcoal leather trim on the seats and doors enhanced through the use of carbon effect leather. Exclusive to R-S cars, this is used on the seat bolsters and arm rests and reflects the use of exotic carbon fibre on the aerodynamic elements of the car. The seats themselves are embossed with the R-S logo and can be finished with a choice of contrast colour micro-piping and stitching in either red, blue or ivory. The same subtle enhancement runs across the top of the dashboard, the fascia of which is finished in a Dark Aluminium unique to the R-S, complete with badging.

Performance

The XFR-S Sportbrake features Jaguar’s acclaimed 5.0-litre supercharged V8 petrol engine in its most potent form matched to an eight-speed transmission with Quickshift functionality. This all-new combination provides a visceral blend of vivid acceleration, driver involvement and control plus entry to the exclusive 300km/h (186mph) club of ultra-high performance cars.

The all-aluminium quad-cam engine delivers not only extreme performance but also tremendous efficiency thanks to the technologies incorporated into it, including spray-guided direct injection (SGDI) and dual independent variable cam timing (DIVCT).

The high-pressure die-cast lightweight aluminium block is stiffened with cast iron liners and cross-bolted main bearing caps, providing refinement to match its power. The four-valve cylinder heads are constructed from recycled aluminium, between them sitting the Roots-type twin vortex supercharger fed by two intercoolers. These feature their own water-cooling circuit to reduce the temperature of the pressurised air to optimise power and efficiency.

In order to help liberate the additional 40PS and 55Nm of torque over the standard XFR, larger front air intakes in the lower bumper of the XFR-S allow greater volumes of air to be fed into the engine. The intake system also features a symposer that channels more of the induction noise into the cabin, adding to the aural excitement of the XFR-S Sportbrake.

The result is a 0-60mph time of 4.6 seconds (0-100km/h in 4.8 seconds) and an electronically-limited top speed of 186mph (300km/h).

The exhaust system has been optimised in order to channel the waste gases away from the engine with the greatest efficiency. The central silencer has been replaced with an X-piece and near straight-through rear pipes combining to provide an enhanced exhaust note with the added benefit of a motorsport-style crackle on the overrun.

Maximising the benefit of the engine recalibration is the eight-speed automatic transmission with Quickshift technology. Developed for the F-TYPE sports car, Quickshift ideally suits the XFR-S Sportbrake’s focused and involving remit. When the enthusiastic driver changes up a gear manually by using the steering wheel-mounted paddles, the Quickshift technology ensures the quickest, crispest shifts via rapid and precisely timed engine torque intervention.

When downshifting (either manually or when in Sport mode) the engine management system automatically blips the throttle to ensure the XFR-S Sportbrake remains balanced and composed, particularly important on entry to a corner. This function also allows the transmission to perform multiple and very rapid downshifts during hard braking. When operating in automatic mode, the transmission can detect the manner in which the car is being driven by monitoring acceleration and braking, cornering forces, throttle and brake pedal activity, road load and kickdown request. On detecting a more enthusiastic driving style, the transmission will automatically make the gearshifts more aggressive and move the shift-up point higher in the rev range.

Corner Recognition senses when the car is negotiating a bend, the transmission holding the correct gear for the exit. The transmission will also recognise when the car is performing a series of overtaking manoeuvres requiring rapid changes in throttle position and, rather than change up, remain in a lower gear ready for the next demand for acceleration.

Dynamics

The dynamic characteristics of the XFR-S Sportbrake were informed by the engineering development of both the XKR-S and the F-TYPE, the result being an incredibly agile, responsive and involving car. For the XFR-S Saloon both front and rear suspension systems were uprated and carefully tuned over tens of thousands of miles at Jaguar’s testing centre at the legendary Nürburgring, the high-speed bowl at Nardo in Italy and the engineers’ favourite roads around the Gaydon Research and Development centre and in north Wales.

The main challenge in the development of the XFR-S Sportbrake was to manage the extra rear mass of the car while retaining the sharp turn-in and response of its saloon cousin. In order to achieve this, Jaguar engineers tuned the XFR-S Sportbrake’s rear active suspension to cope with the extra weight of the car’s increased rear mass, with the dampers and springs adjusted to match the mass distribution of the car. The anti-roll bars have been changed and the rear axle has been modified, while the rear brakes have been tuned to work in conjunction with the car’s ABS system.

Overall lateral suspension stiffness has been increased by 30 per cent front and rear, with front and rear spring rates increased by the same amount.

As on the XFR-S Saloon, the front suspension knuckles have been revised in line with those found on the XKR-S to achieve the increased camber and castor stiffness which, along with new wheel bearings, optimise steering and handling precision. The steering system has additionally benefited from the fitment of the valving developed for the F-TYPE.

The rear subframe has enabled revisions to suspension geometry which, allied to stiffer bushes – new rear knuckles and working in tandem with the stiffer springs – increase stability and response over standard XF Sportbrake models.

In order to achieve the maximum benefit from the suspension revisions, the XFR-S Sportbrake has lightweight, forged 20-inch ‘Varuna’ alloy wheels. These are half an inch wider at the front and an inch wider at the rear in comparison to the wheels found on the XFR but their construction means there is no weight penalty to be paid.

The tyres, developed in conjunction with Pirelli exclusively for the XFR-S Sportbrake, are 10mm wider all round, being 265/35 and 295/30 front/rear. The difference between the wheel rim and tyre width increases has the effect of pre-loading the sidewall to improve handling and steering response without adversely affecting refinement.

Working in harmony with the uprated suspension, wheels and tyres are revised electronic programmes controlling the Adaptive Dynamics, active electronic differential and Dynamic Stability Control systems.

Jaguar’s Adaptive Dynamics system actively controls vertical body movement, roll and pitch rates through the use of continuously variable dampers. The system monitors driver inputs and the road conditions, adjusting damper rates in response up to 500 times a second to optimise stability and agility. The driver’s selection of Dynamic Mode offers enhanced body control through moving the damping rates to the firmer end of the available range.

The Jaguar active electronic differential – which can apply full locking torque almost instantaneously when necessary – has been recalibrated in order to exploit the greater grip offered by the wider rear tyres, the more precisely controlled suspension and the engine output. Working in parallel with the differential, the ‘Trac DSC’ setting of the Dynamic Stability Control system now offers the enthusiastic driver more opportunity to explore the outer edges of the handling envelope while nevertheless providing a discreet safety net.

Providing equal levels of confidence is Jaguar’s High Performance Braking System, which offers an unmatched combination of power, stability and fine modulation. The 380mm front and 376mm rear discs are internally ventilated for assured repeated stopping power and on XFR-S benefit from additional cooling provided by under-body air channelling.

The XFR-S Sportbrake is fitted as standard with a 825W, 18-speaker system from British audio experts Meridian. Recognised by audiophiles as a leader in audio reproduction and fidelity, the system uses digital signal processing to create a sound field that is second to none. The system features Meridian’s proprietary Trifield System that places every occupant at the centre of their own perfectly focused surround-sound arena.

DALLAS, Feb. 18, 2014 – The new 2015 Ford Expedition, revealed here today ahead of the
2014 DFW Auto Show, continues to represent the smart choice for people who need a full-size
utility vehicle that provides capable performance, usable space and advanced technology.
Expedition now features Ford F-Series’ popular 3.5-liter EcoBoost® engine, more technology
than ever and a fresh new look. Launching later this year, it is the latest Ford nameplate to offer
a Platinum series. Expedition is being shown for the first time in Texas, Ford’s largest market by
sales volume, and home to the top two cities for Expedition sales – Dallas and Houston.

Expedition debuted in 1996 and is Ford’s largest utility vehicle. By most measures, it is a leader
in interior space, accommodating eight passengers. Two versions are offered – the standard
119-inch wheelbase is just more than 6 inches longer than Ford Explorer. It has three rows of
seats and up to 108.3 cubic feet of cargo space. The longer-wheelbase version sits on a 131-
inch wheelbase, and features three rows of seats and up to 130.8 cubic feet of cargo space.
Expedition remains the only full-size utility vehicle not classified as a luxury offering to feature
an independent rear suspension. This helps deliver more confident ride and handling
characteristics, and allows for the lower, more convenient fold-flat third-row bench seat.
Both standard and EL versions of Expedition are built at Kentucky Truck Plant in Louisville,
alongside Ford’s popular Super Duty pickup. Last month, the company confirmed plans to add
more workers and invest an additional $80 million in facility upgrades to improve automation
and increase capacity at the plant.

Ford is responding to strong customer feedback and introducing a top-of-the-line Platinum
series Expedition with unique, premium interior appointments. The new vehicle features the
latest popular technologies like SYNC® with MyFord Touch®, push-button start and Blind Spot
Information System®. A new 3.5-liter, direct-injected twin-turbocharged EcoBoost delivers more
power and performance than the current 5.4-liter V8, and is designed to be more efficient.

“This new Expedition is proof Ford is committed to remaining the leader in utilities – small,
medium and large,” said Jackie DiMarco, Expedition chief engineer. “We listened to our
customers and created a full-size utility vehicle that doesn’t compromise in performance,
technology or design.”

Improved on the road

From the outset, engineers worked to make the 2015 Expedition a technologically advanced
vehicle that is easy to drive and offers refinement for all types of drivers.

The new EcoBoost engine dramatically changes the driving characteristics of Expedition.
Compared with the 5.4-liter V8, the 3.5-liter EcoBoost gives drivers not just better fuel economy,
but more power and torque on demand at very low engine speeds.

“Expedition becoming the latest Ford utility vehicle to wear the EcoBoost badge will be exciting
for customers,” said Doug Scott, Ford truck group marketing manager. “Increased torque and
horsepower, combined with new levels of efficiency and an advanced suspension not only will
make Expedition more fun to drive, but also easier to own. This is another ‘and’ solution from
Ford.”

The 3.5-liter EcoBoost will be the only engine offered in the new Expedition in North America.
To maximize performance and control, the vehicle is equipped with a six-speed SelectShift®
automatic transmission featuring a manual mode that allows the driver to use a shift-mounted
rocker switch to select the desired gear.

With EcoBoost now standard equipment across the 2015 Expedition range, the entire U.S.
lineup of Ford utility vehicles will be available with EcoBoost power by the end of 2014.
New continuously controlled damping, available for the first time on a Ford nameplate, will make
Expedition the only Blue Oval-branded vehicle in the United States with three selectable drive
modes – comfort, normal and sport.

Using a suite of sensors that detect 46 unique body, steering and braking inputs, the advanced
suspension monitors body motion and then adjusts Expedition’s damping system in milliseconds
to manage the vehicle’s natural body motion. A vehicle with poor damping feels as if it is
bouncing on its suspension springs; continuously controlled damping recognizes the weight of
the vehicle, steering feedback and road undulations and then reacts accordingly, helping to
control body motion so passengers experience an orderly, comfortable ride.

The new Expedition also features Ford’s innovative electric power-assisted steering, which
gives drivers noticeably improved maneuverability at low speeds and better feel at high speeds,
and saves fuel because it operates more efficiently than traditional pump-driven systems. The
technology reduces steering effort and makes Expedition more engaging to drive.

More technology customers want

The new Expedition debuts with popular technology upgrades consumers are now demanding,
including SYNC with MyFord Touch and driver-assist features such as radar-based Blind Spot
Information System with cross-traffic alert.

For news releases, related materials and high-resolution photos and video, visit www.media.ford.com.

The updated interior of Expedition incorporates a fresh center stack to accommodate new
technologies, such as an 8-inch touch screen for SYNC with MyFord Touch. The driver
information cluster features two full-color 4.2-inch LCD screens.

Other new technologies on the 2015 Expedition include a 10-speaker, 700-watt Sony audio
system; Intelligent Access with push-button start; rearview camera; seven-color, interior ambient
LED lighting; and Ford truck apps to help make trailer towing and off-road driving easier.

Fresh style and design

The new Expedition pushes full-size utility vehicle design to a higher level, with fresh interior
and exterior styling and a diverse series lineup – each with a distinct look and feel to give
customers more choice than ever. A Platinum trim package, which has been very successful on
Ford F-Series, will be available on Expedition for the first time.

“The Platinum series brings Expedition into a whole new arena of design and style,” said Scott.
“One of the strengths of Expedition has always been the different trim series we offer. From XLT
to Limited and now with Platinum, we have an Expedition that will fit any customer’s needs.”
The Platinum series is tailored with lush leather seating described by designers as buttery – soft
and smooth to the touch. It’s available in a new Brunello leather, a red wine color with tuxedostripe
accents and French-seamed stitching. Platinum customers can also choose black leather
with Agate Gray accents.

Beyond the new Platinum series, the 2015 Expedition lineup includes the XLT, Limited and a
new King Ranch edition to be revealed later.

The design team, finding inspiration in the world around them, incorporated different themes to
define the look for each series. The intent was to reflect a consumer lifestyle, from the sporty
XLT, to the confident, elegant Limited, to the sophisticated, urban Platinum. Each series has
unique finishes specially selected to reflect the lifestyle and desires of the customer. For
example, Expedition Limited features refined yet traditional finishes, while for the Platinum
edition, the colors and material finishes are fresh and sophisticated.

The Expedition exterior has been updated with an all-new front end featuring available LED fog
lamps for a fresh, aggressive look.

An all-new wheel lineup including factory-installed 22-inch models, a redesigned rear hatch and
subtle, chrome-tipped exhaust pipes round out the exterior changes to the 2015 Expedition.
With this new model debuting at the DFW Auto Show – deep in the heart of the full-size utility
vehicle market – Ford is building on a successful tradition of Expedition capability and quality
with significant improvements in design, performance, efficiency and available technology.

The new McLaren 650S will be slotted in between the current MP4-12C and the P1 Supercar producing 650 horsepower from the same twin-turbo 3.8-liter V8 found in the MP4-12C. New aerodynamics will assist the new McLaren 650S around the track with a 24% increase in downforce at 150 mph when compared to the 12C. Even the improved airbrake utilizing the rear spoiler takes more of an active approach by enabling at certain degrees when additional downforce is required.

The McLaren 650S gets many other unique bits, including lightweight wheels shod in custom MC1 branded tires from Pirelli. It looks as if no stone was left unturned in the new 650S as McLaren sets their sights on offering a new main-stream exotic out in front of its competition, potentially in a literal sense. You may think if the 650S as an answer to Ferrari’s 458 Speciale.

McLAREN AUTOMOTIVE RELEASES FIRST IMAGES OF THE 650S COUPÉ AHEAD OF GENEVA REVEAL

Feb 17, 2014

  • Designed and developed to give the enthusiast driver the ultimate in luxury, engagement and excitement
  • The McLaren 650S will offer the widest breadth of capabilities of any supercar
  • Coupéand Spider, with electrically retractable hardtop, to be available from Spring 2014 launch
  • Joins McLaren’s range of supercars above 12C, which continues on sale
  • Uniquely enhanced active aerodynamics and ProActive Chassis Control systems optimise the capabilities and usability

McLaren Automotive will return to the International Geneva Motor Show this year with its fastest, most engaging, best equipped and most beautiful series-production supercar yet.

The McLaren 650S joins the range as an additional model alongside the 12C and sold-out McLaren P1™, and learns from both models as well as 50 years of competing in the highest levels of motorsport. Available as a fixed-head coupé or as a Spider, with a retractable folding hard top, the McLaren 650S promises to redefine the high performance supercar segment, and has been designed and developed to provide the ultimate in driver engagement on the road and on the race track.

The 650S badge designation refers to the power output – 650PS (641 bhp), – of the unique British-built McLaren M838T twin turbo V8 engine. ‘S’ stands for ‘Sport’, underlining the focus and developments made to handling, transmission, drivability and engagement.  Performance figures will be confirmed ahead of the Geneva Show but will improve on the already rapid 12C which continues on sale.

The design is inspired by the McLaren P1™, previewing a new family design language. The front bumper gives the McLaren 650S a dramatic, yet clean appearance and sits below new LED headlamps which reflect a similar look to the McLaren P1™. The more integrated front splitter contributes to increased levels of downforce, giving a greater level of steering feeling and confidence to the driver on turn-in, while also adding to the agility and the car’s handling balance. Unique door blades behind the front wheels direct air from the trailing edges of the front splitter, further benefiting front-end grip and vehicle balance.

The aerodynamic performance of the McLaren 650S is as efficient as the 12C, boasting the same drag coefficient figure, yet the air is being worked harder and more efficiently as it flows over, and through, the functional bodywork. At 150 mph, downforce levels are increased by 24 percent.

‘As always with McLaren, the new design is there for good engineering reasons,’says McLaren Automotive CEO Mike Flewitt.  ‘The newly designed front bumper improves downforce and steering turn-in. The high speed handling balance is now even better. The LED lights use less power and last longer.

Unique side intakes behind the dihedral doors feed large, efficiently packaged, radiators which help provide the cooling requirements of the mid-mounted, compact engine. A new design five-spoke lightweight forged ‘650S’ alloy wheel is unique to the model, and are fitted with Pirelli P Zero™ Corsa tyres to offer optimised roadholding, handling and driver feedback – the bespoke ‘MC1’ branded tyres have been developed alongside the McLaren 650S by McLaren technology partner Pirelli, and offer strong performance in normal road conditions and on track.

The McLaren 650S builds on experience from success on the track, and groundbreaking technologies fitted to other McLaren models. Active aerodynamics, which feature on both the 12C and McLaren P1™, have been further developed and honed to ensure the ultimate performance and ability for the McLaren 650S. The McLaren Airbrake, originally fitted to the 12C and 12C Spider and designed to offer optimised levels of downforce on the rear of the car, now operates with a greater level of functionality providing increased stability.  The newly developed system means the Airbrake deploys whenever the car senses extra downforce is advisable – rather than simply under braking or when manually operated in ‘Aero’ mode. Below the Airbrake, a distinctive rear three-piece bumper, similar to the GT3 racing version of the 12C, compliments the aerodynamic shaping of the McLaren 650S.

The pioneering ProActive Chassis Control (PCC) suspension system, developed by McLaren, has been further enhanced for the McLaren 650S. A feature of the system is the ability to adjust the ride and handling modes – Normal / Sport / Track – in isolation from the drivetrain, which gives complete freedom in terms of ride and handling. These settings, for both powertrain and suspension, have been recalibrated to improve driver engagement. The updates are especially noticeable in Sport mode.

‘McLaren is a fast moving company, continually striving for improvements and technical advantages. We are always seeking to innovate, to be the class leaders, to bring new technologies and thinking to market. That’s our Formula 1 heritage shining through,’ explains Mike Flewitt. ‘Everything we’ve learnt from the 12C and the McLaren P1™ has gone into the design and development of the McLaren 650S.’

The McLaren 650S is designed to be the best and most engaging driver’s car in its class, yet it is not a stripped out road racer. Ride comfort and refinement are to executive saloon standards. The McLaren 650S models are equipped with IRIS satellite navigation with Bluetooth telephony, DAB digital radio (SIRIUS satellite radio in North America), wireless tethering, audio streaming and voice control as standard, while also offering enhanced levels of optional specification than previously offered. Options include fixed-back carbon racing seats, based on the lightweight design found in the McLaren P1™, an electric steering column adjustment assisting ingress and egress, a rear parking camera and extended carbon fibre throughout the interior.

The global reveal of the McLaren 650S Coupéand Spider will take place on Stand 1240, Hall 1 at 12.00CET (11.00GMT) on Tuesday, 4 March 2014 at the 84th International Geneva Motor Show.

Each year we take pleasure in reviewing the J.D. Power Vehicle Dependability Study and examining which automakers make the top of the list and which ones falter. This year, for the first time since 1998, the overall dependability declined when compared to previous years.

The 2014 study is significant more so in its demonstration of over-all dependability, all according to problems per 100 vehicles reported, due to a decline throughout the entire automotive landscape. One could conclude that today’s cars are a bit less reliable than the outgoing few years. Though, this is not to say some of your favorite brands have not improved. Considering how Lexus has remained to stay at the very top of the list demonstrates how there pursuit for perfection is paying off. Additionally, their margin over the next best automaker is astonishing, scoring only 68 problems per 100 vehicles while Mercedes-Benz takes second place with 104 PP100.
