Polestar To Launch In America Mid-2019 15
Dec
Posted by Carscoops Staff in Polestar, Polestar One, Reports on 12 15th, 2017

Polestar has announced the first markets it intends to hit – and the US is at the top of the list.

The electrified performance brand is set to open Polestar Spaces (its term for showrooms) sometime in the middle of 2019 in the United States, China, and four European countries: Sweden, Norway, the Netherlands, and Germany. Additional markets are slated to be announced “at a later date.”

The automaker has been receiving expressions of interest – at a rate as high as one per minute on launch day this past October – before officially opening the order books early in the new year ahead.

Production is set to commence around the same time as the showrooms open a year and a half from now, at the factory currently being constructed in China. The Polestar 1 will be the first in a series of products the company will offer through a subscription model that will draw on the expertise that its sister company will glean from its similar Care by Volvo program.

Polestar 1 Production To Be Capped At 500 Units Per Year 12

When the head-turning Polestar 1 hits the roads, it won’t be a common sight. In fact, difficulties in producing the sports car will limit its production.

Automotive News Europe reports that the Polestar 1 will be based around a shortened version of the steel platform used by the Volvo S90. The 1’s carbon fiber body will then be bonded on to the chassis, a task that is both time-consuming and expensive.

With this in mind, Polestar only intends on building roughly 500 examples per year.

Consequently, the Polestar 1 will act as the brand’s halo model and help to ensure Polestar becomes a household name. From there, the company will launch its Tesla Model 3-rivalling sedan, dubbed the Polestar 2, in late 2019. A couple of years later, the Polestar 3 will arrive in the form of a crossover aiming to steal customers away from the Tesla Model X.

The company’s range will then be topped off by the Polestar 4, expected to be a convertible based around the Polestar 1.

This Is Where They’ll Build The New Polestar 1 Coupe 21

The Polestar brand may be essentially an offshoot of Volvo, but its vehicles won’t be produced along Volvo assembly lines. Instead parent company Geely is building a completely new production center, construction of which has now officially begun.

Situated in Chengdu, China, the new Polestar Production Centre is set to open in the middle of next year, tasked initially with fabricating the Polestar 1 – a 600-horsepower hybrid super-coupe. But the facility just be a factory.

It’ll also have a “customer experience” center like the one Volvo has in Gothenburg, and a test track on which customers will be invited to try out their new hybrid wheels.

“Following the successful launch of the new Polestar brand in October, construction of the new Polestar Production Centre is the next step in turning our plans into reality,” said Polestar CEO Thomas Ingenlath. “We are building a Production Centre that is a reflection of our brand. A facility that is modern, progressive, technically advanced and environmentally responsible. The Polestar Production Centre will be an embodiment of the Polestar brand.”

Designed by Norwegian architecture firm Snøhetta, the facility is destined to be the most environmentally friendly in China, and one of the greenest in the world. Once production comes online, it’ll build as many as 500 vehicles each year, making it a rather low-volume production facility.

Polestar 1 Looks Wicked As A Race Car 3

The Polestar 1 won’t arrive in the hands of customers (or should we say subscribers) for a couple of years, but Aksyonov Nikita has already decided to render the coupe as a race car.

Immediately differentiating the car pictured from the production-spec Polestar 1 is the overhauled front fascia that incorporates a custom bumper which seamlessly joins to a pair of aggressively flared wheel arches.

Final modifications made to the Swedish two-door include racing wheels, slick tires and a large rear wing.

Polestar has made no comment on whether it intends on promoting its vehicles through motorsport. However, we’d love to see the car’s hybrid powertrain replaced by a simple naturally-aspirated V8 and the 1 competing in Australia’s Supercars championship.
