Forget The Cullinan – Rolls Royce Will Give Its SUV A Different Name 2

Despite almost everyone was expecting Rolls-Royce to name the first SUV in its history the Cullinan name, it appears that the British brand has chosen a dfferent moniker.

This report comes from SUVAuthority, and it quotes the brand’s chief for the Asia-Pacific region, Hal Serudin, who pointed out that the ‘Cullinan’ is “just a working project title”, adding that the company should bring “more news on this in the coming year”.

In the meantime, Rolls-Royce continues testing the SUV in various environments, including the Nurburgring. Despite keeping its camouflage on, we already have a good idea on how it will look like thanks to the numerous spy shots and videos, as well as a set of renderings.

So, what should we expect? Well, mostly a Phantom-inspired exterior design and dashboard, and the same aluminum platform that’s found in the brand’s flagship saloon, but with different suspension settings and a new all-wheel drive system.

The luxury SUV is said to come from the 6.75-liter twin-turbo V12 of the Phantom, where it makes 571PS (563hp) and 900Nm (663lb-ft) of torque, which is mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission.

Last, but not least, Rolls-Royce is expected to unveil its Bentley Bentayga, Lamborghini Urus and Range Rover SVAutobiography rival in 2018.

Rolls-Royce Cullinan Gets Rendered Based On Spy Photos 27

Rolls-Royce is putting the finishing touches on its first crossover and Peisert Design has created some renderings of what the model could look like.

Using previous spy photos of the Cullinan, Peisert Design went to work and created a handful of renderings which seem to accurately predict what the crossover could look like. As you can see in the side-to-side photos, the Cullinan is heavily influenced by the all-new Phantom but it adopts a modified front bumper with larger air intakes. The renderings also show a shorter grille that is flanked by larger headlights.

Unfortunately, the rear of the crossover is pretty plain as the only distinguishing characteristics are suicide rear doors and a heavily raked D-pillar.

Rolls-Royce has been slowly teasing the model and the company has already confirmed the Cullinan will ride on the “Architecture of Luxury” that underpins the Phantom. The car’s twin-turbo 6.75-liter V12 engine – that produces 563 hp (420 kW) and 663 lb-ft (900 Nm) of torque – should carryover and it will likely be connected to an eight-speed automatic transmission and an all-wheel drive system.

While it won’t be the prettiest Rolls-Royce ever created, the Cullinan will have an opulent interior with wood trim, metallic accents, and premium leather upholstery.

Rolls-Royce Cullinan Sheds Some Camo On The Road To Production 20

While Rolls-Royce has showcased some tantalizing images of its own, the clearest looks into its forthcoming crossover have come, as they often do, from spy shots. And these could be the most revealing yet.

Spotted by our spy photographers sitting on the back of a transport trailer, this prototype for the model tentatively known as Project Cullinan has shed some of the camouflage we’ve seen in previous spy images.

The front the greenhouse is exposed, as is part of the roof. We can also discern more of the high side flank, with those signature “coach” doors opening outward from the B-pillar.

In case it wasn’t until now, these photos also make it obvious that Rolls-Royce has steered clear of the slant-back crossover coupe profile that its parent company BMW essentially pioneered, to the benefit of rear-seat space – a vital priority for Rolls buyers, we needn’t point out.

Though based on the same aluminum spaceframe platform as the new Phantom, the Cullinan sits higher and will offer better all-weather traction, not to mention a taller cargo compartment. Expect twelve-cylinder power when it debuts sometime next year, to be followed by a plug-in hybrid version in the near future.

Rolls-Royce’s Upcoming SUV Won’t Look Like This, But Maybe It Should 13

Rolls-Royce has been very clear that its forthcoming crossover won’t be an SUV. Elegant, sure. Sporty… er, maybe. But certainly not utilitarian.

An “all-terrain, high-sided vehicle” is what they’re calling it over in Goodwood. But what if it were a real utility vehicle?

Then it might look something a little like this. A lot like this, if we were so fortunate. It’s called the Rolls-Royce Haunt, in keeping with the marque’s ghostly naming scheme. Only it doesn’t actually exist. It’s a rendering from Brazilian designer Kleber Silva.

As you can see, the design calls for a four-door, short-bed pickup truck – not unlike, say, the Lamborghini LM002 or a Hummer H2 SUT… only not quite that utilitarian, and with distinctly Rolls-Royce design traits.

It has a “pantheon” grille, Spirit of Ecstasy hood ornament, suicide rear doors, two-tone paintjob… just how we’d expect a Rolls-Royce truck to look, if ever the ultra-lux automaker were to make one. And looking at it, we can’t help but wonder if it should.

Maybe then you’d see owners taking their Rollses hunting (or hawking) like they used to, instead of having to “slum it” in a Range Rover or Bentley Bentayga.

1905 saw plenty of excitement. Las Vegas was founded that year, the Russo-Japanese War was in full swing, Canada founded the provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan, and Albert Einstein wrote the beginnings of his theory of relativity.

Meanwhile in the UK a motor manufacturer called Rolls-Royce was just getting started, and in South Africa the world's largest diamond was pulled out of a mine near Pretoria.
