Move Over, Porsche Macan; The Alfa Stelvio QV Wants The Sportiest SUV Crown 6

It’s no secret that Alfa Romeo is marketing the new Stelvio Quadrifoglio as the sportiest model in the premium compact SUV segment.

Powered by the same powertrain with the Giulia Quadrifoglio, the range-topping Stelvio has to prove that it’s not just another really fast SUV, but also one that offers real fun behind the wheel.

Straight-line performance is great, thanks to the 505hp of the twin-turbo 2.9-liter V6, with 0-60mph coming in an impressive 3.9 seconds and a top speed of 177mph (285km/h).

The chassis also features the same torque-vectoring rear differential used in the Giulia, while the adaptive dampers offer the necessary handling and ride an SUV with such high aspirations must have.

Autocar reviews the new Stelvio Quadrifoglio on a twisty mountain pass in the UAE and deliver their verdict in the following video.

Alfa Romeo Stelvio Reviewed: A True Alfa Or Just Another SUV? 2

Posted by Andreas Tsaousis in Alfa Romeo Stelvio, Alfa Romeo Videos, alfa-romeo, Film, reviews, video on 01 2nd, 2018

Customers have been abandoning traditional choices, such as mid-size sedans, and flocking to SUVs of all sizes for quite some time now, and automakers are more than happy to accommodate them.

Most of them, anyway, as Alfa Romeo was remarkable by its absence in that segment, despite having displayed an SUV concept, the Kamal, as early as 2003 at the Geneva Auto Show.

Well, the powers that be at FCA probably got their priorities wrong, which explains why Lancia was, practically, killed off, Fiat ending up relying mostly on the 500 and its offsprings and Alfa… Well, Alfa didn’t even have a full range to begin with, as the MiTo and Giulietta simply weren’t enough, and the much lauded 4C was a low-volume sports car that wouldn’t yield significant profits.

After a considerable amount of time, due to CEO Sergio Marchionne changing his mind quite often, it finally rolled out the Giulia, its first rear-wheel drive saloon since the 75. The thing is, the gestation period was simply too long, and by the time it hit the market SUVs were all the rage.

At long last, Alfa did reveal its first-ever SUV, the Stelvio, which shared many components with the Giulia, to the point that one could say that, essentially, it is a Giulia on stilts. Given the praise that the latter has received, though, this isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

The 505HP Quadrifoglio was released first and, naturally, received plenty of praise in reviews. Carfection, though, got hold of a Stelvio powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four that puts out 280PS and, let’s face it, will account for a large number of the sales, as the QV is acting as a halo car for the rest of the range.

Now, the question both the reviewer and ourselves are asking is whether the Stelvio remains true to Alfa’s sporty DNA or if it’s just another SUV devoid of any true Italian flair. After driving it in the Alps, they delivered their verdict, which you can watch in the following video.

Alfa Romeo Giulia And Stelvio Recalled Over Contaminated Brake Fluid 2

Posted by Carscoops Staff in Alfa Romeo Giulia, Alfa Romeo Stelvio, alfa-romeo, NHTSA, Recalls on 01 2nd, 2018

When you drive any new vehicle, you count on the brakes to be working properly at all times. But this is not the case with certain Alfa Romeos, as the company has just issued a recall concerning this issue.

The Italian automaker reports that it filled the braking systems on a few hundred new Giulias and Stelvios with contaminated brake fluid, which could damage the brakes and keep them from performing as they should.

The problem appears to be limited to 2018 models manufactured between the 14th and 23rd of November, 2017, of which only 307 examples are estimated to be found in the United States, though it’s possible that there are more in other countries around the world.

Those sedans and crossovers will need to be brought in to their local dealers to have the braking systems inspected and, where necessary, replaced entirely. The process is set to kick off on February 8, so drivers of the affected vehicles had better test their brakes to make sure they’re working in the meantime or refrain from using them altogether.

Alfa Romeo’s American Stelvio Ad May Leave You Scratching Your Head 7
Dec
Posted by Brad Anderson in Alfa Romeo Stelvio, Alfa Romeo Videos, alfa-romeo, commercials, video on 12 7th, 2017

To car enthusiasts like ourselves, the name Alfa Romeo is synonymous with some of the most addictive and stylish production cars ever built – it’s also negatively correlated to reliability, but that’s another story.

However, to your average car consumer in the United States, the Italian marque is a relative unknown.

Alfa first tried to crack back into the modern-day U.S. market with the 4C but that didn’t go very well. Since then, it has launched both the Giulia sedan and Stelvio SUV in the country and is finally making inroads in a becoming a household name.

In a bid to promote the Stelvio and raise awareness for the carmaker, Alfa Romeo has dropped a new 30-second commercial for the SUV made for American consumers.

The American narrator for the commercial raps a rather catchy poem about the bland SUVs that fill the U.S. market and how the Stelvio is distinguished from them. As a way to appeal to millennials and spread awareness of the brand, we think it does quite a good job.

However, we’re not so sure that prospective buyers of the Stelvio will be convinced into purchasing the SUV with this commercial. It is a bit too brash and a bit too loud, especially for a company like Alfa Romeo that’s meant to exude Italian sports car heritage.

What do you think of the advertisement?

Alfa Romeo just celebrated the new Stelvio Quadrifoglio with an international media drive.

The Italian car maker has also released an extensive image gallery from the event that allows enthusiasts to catch yet another glimpse into the brand’s range-topping SUV model.

Named after a famous mountain pass in northern Italy, and one of the greatest driving roads the world has to offer, the range-topping model is a true game changer for the FCA-owned brand, which pursues its first profit next year after almost two decades.

Poised to arrive shortly in North America, where it will join two other grades, the Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio sports a more aggressive exterior design, in addition to some chassis tweaks, clever suspension and brakes and a range of driver assistance gizmos.

At its heart lies a 2.9-liter V6 engine shared with the Giulia Quadrifoglio, which delivers 505hp (512PS) and 443lb-ft (600Nm) of torque to the Q4 all-wheel drive system through an 8-speed automatic transmission. The Ferrari-derived powertrain and all of its mods allow it to cover the 0-60mph (96km/h) acceleration in 3.9sec and reach a top speed of 177mph (284km/h).

2018 NACTOY Finalists Announced, Can You Pick The Winners? 29

The 2018 North American Car, Truck and Utility of the Year (NACTOY) finalists have been announced at the 2017 Los Angeles Auto Show.

The shortlist includes three names in each category, which were chosen by a panel of nearly 60 automotive journalists, following some extensive testing. The jurors will now have to trim down the list furthermore by announcing the big winners, on January 15, at the 2018 Detroit Auto Show.

However, until they do, let’s take a look at the 2018 North American Car of the Year category, which sees the Alfa Romeo Giulia, Audi A5 Sportback, BMW 5-Series, Hyundai Ioniq, Kia Rio, Lexus LC500, Porsche Panamera, and Subaru Impreza removed, as the only vehicles still present are the Honda Accord, Kia Stinger, and Toyota Camry.

The 2018 North American Utility of the Year award, on the other hand, will go to the Alfa Romeo Stelvio, Honda Odyssey, or Volvo XC60. These were favored over the Audi Q5, BMW X3, Buick Enclave, Chevrolet Equinox, Chevrolet Traverse, Jeep Compass, Kia Niro, Land Rover Discovery, Mazda CX-5, Subaru Crosstrek, Volkswagen Atlas, and Volkswagen Tiguan.

Things don’t look different at all in the 2018 North American Truck of the Year category, as the Chevrolet Colorado ZR2, Ford Expedition, and Lincoln Navigator are still very much present.

“The task of selecting these nine finalists – especially in the car and ultra-competitive category – was extremely difficult”, said the organization’s Secretary-Treasurer Lauren Fix. “And while there may be some favorites among the finalists, any of these vehicles could end up walking away with the trophy in their category, when we announce the winners in Detroit, in January.”

Last year, the Chevrolet Bolt was named North American Car of the Year, whereas the Truck of the Year and Utility of the Year awards went to the Honda Ridgeline, and Chrysler Pacifica, respectively.

2018 Car Of The Year Finalists Announced, Which One Will Win? 27

Alfa Romeo, Audi, BMW, Citroen, Kia, Seat, and Volvo battle each other for the 2018th edition of the European Car of the Year (=COTY).

Selected from a long list of 37 new vehicles, all of which were launched this year, or will become available by the end of 2017, in five or more European markets, the finalists have proved themselves in various tests.

However, they will be further evaluated by the 60 members of the jury, from 23 countries, over the coming months, as they are responsible for picking one winner, which will be announced on the eve of the 2018 Geneva Motor Show, on March 5.

Alfa Romeo Stelvio

Presented last year, at the 2016 LA Auto Show, the Alfa Romeo Stelvio represents the brand’s first SUV. It comes with a familiar design, and in its range-topping form it shares the 2.9-liter twin-turbo V6 engine with the Giulia QV, which is rated at 505hp and 600Nm (443lb-ft) of torque.

Audi A8

Audi’s flagship saloon, the A8, has been taken into its fourth generation, and despite having an evolutionary styling, inspired by the Prologue Concept, the BMW 7-Series and Mercedes-Benz S-Class rival is all-new, both on the outside, in the cabin, and beneath the skin. It’s also the first car on the road to get Level 3 autonomous driving.

BMW 5-Series

Underpinned by the CLAR platform, and with looks that could allow it to fly under the radar, the new generation BMW 5-Series proved itself worthy in various reviews, and it now wants to go home with the 2018 ECOTY award. It’s lighter yet comes with a larger footprint than its predecessor, while adding new engines, and even an autonomous driving tech that allows drivers to relax behind the wheel, into the mix.

Citroen C3 Aircross

The French company’s answer to the Nissan Juke, Renault Captur, Opel/Vauxhall Mokka, Ford EcoSport, and others debuted this summer wearing the Citroen C3 Aircross moniker. It has a funky crossover-ish design, unlike its MPV predecessor, and can be had with various personalization options, a feature that should help it attract a young audience.

Kia Stinger

With sexy styling and a rear-wheel drive platform, the Kia Stinger wants a piece of the BMW 4-Series Gran Coupe, and Audi A5 Sportback. In addition, the Korean GT undercuts the four-door A5 by more than $10,000, and it’s $11,200 more affordable than the 4-Series GC, in the USA.

Seat Ibiza

The fifth-generation Seat Ibiza has a Leon-inspired styling and the MQB A0 architecture, a combo that should allow it to become a strong challenger against the likes of the Renault Clio, Opel/Vauxhall Corsa, Ford Fiesta, and Peugeot 208. It was presented for the first time at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show, and in its range-topping form, it has plenty of features, including a range of driver assistance systems.

Volvo XC40

Volvo’s smallest SUV yet, which slots under the XC60 and XC90, is called the XC40. It sports a familiar design, inspired by its two larger siblings, and it’s underpinned by the company’s new modular vehicle architecture, CMA, which was co-developed with Geely. Production began this month in Belgium, and the first units will arrive to customers next year.
