When Will It End? Takata Recalls Another 3.3 Million Airbags In The USA 8

Takata added another 3.3 million airbag inflators to the continuously expanding recall, making it the largest of its kind in the United States of America.

According to a report published by DetroitFreePress, the latest action revolves around the faulty frontal airbags in certain 2009, 2010, and 2013 vehicles made by a variety of car brands.

The list of automakers includes Audi, BMW, Daimler Vans, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, Ford, General Motors, Honda, Jaguar Land Rover, Mazda, Mercedes-Benz, Mitsubishi, Subaru, and Tesla. The exact models will be announced later this month, in the paperwork submitted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Takata’s faulty airbag inflators include ammonium nitrate, a chemical used to create a small explosion that fills the airbags quickly in the event of a crash. However, it’s known that when exposed to high temperatures and humidity, the chemical deteriorates, causing the metal canister to blow apart and spreading shrapnel into the cabin.

So far, at least 180 people have been injured by the metal bits worldwide, and more than 20 have lost their lives.

The NHTSA continues to monitor the automakers’ repairs progress, but even though Takata recalls originally began back in 2001, many companies have been slow to replace the airbag inflators.

A report published by an independent monitor, quoted by DetroitFreePress, states that 43.1 million inflators had been recalled until September 15, 2017, out of which only 18.5 million had been replaced, which accounts for 43 percent.

Look For Jaguar SVX, SVAutobiography Models To Come 3
Posted by Carscoops Staff in Jaguar, Jaguar Land Rover, Land Rover, Reports, SVO on 12 3rd, 2017

Jaguar Land Rover’s Special Vehicle Operations division has been busy lately coming out with more powerful, more hard-core, and more opulent versions of both brands’ products. But there’s more to come.

Speaking with Jaguar’s design boss and SVO’s chief, Motor Trend reports on the prospect of the Leaping Cat marque getting either or both of the SVX and SVAutobiography trims in the near future.

“I don’t see any reason why not,” lead designer Ian Callum told MT on the possibility, accompanied by what the publication described as a “sly grin” suggesting that such models may already be in development.

SVO boss John Edwards similarly described the process within his division of fielding “constant” proposals from his team of 400 engineers and designers.

To date, Jaguar has adopted the performance-focused SVR treatment on the F-Type and SV Project approach on that same model as well as the XE sports sedan.

The SVX and SVAutobiography trims have, meanwhile, thus far only been applied to Land Rover models like the Discovery and Range Rover, respectively. But they could extend to Jaguars like the F-Pace crossover and XJ sedan.

An F-Pace SVX would ostensibly serve as a more hard-core off-road version of Jaguar’s first crossover, jacked up to tackle more serious terrain. And an XJ SVAutobiography would take the flagship sedan (whether in its current or future iteration) to even more luxurious heights to rival the likes of the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class –much as a proper XJ SVR would pit the existing XJR 575 against the Mercedes-AMG S63.

Whichever models do get the ne-plus-ultra treatments, what’s clear at this point is that the SVO division is full of ideas, and will put the best of them into production.

Jaguar Land Rover Starts Testing Autonomous Vehicles On UK Roads 18
Posted by Brad Anderson in Autonomous, Jaguar, Jaguar Land Rover, Land Rover, Reports, Tech on 11 18th, 2017

Jaguar Land Rover has commenced testing of self-driving prototypes on roads throughout the United Kingdom. In particular, according tto The Telegraph, the British automaker has been running its driverless vehicles through the country’s streets for a number of weeks already.

This is the first time these vehicles have left the confines of closed roads and tracks and been used in public. Jaguar Land Rover says that a human driver sits behind the wheel of each prototype, but for the most part the vehicle controls itself through a plethora of advanced sensors.

“We stand on the brink of a mobility revolution. The impact of the changes we are about to embrace will be huge across all sectors of the UK economy. The opportunities are great: this mobility revolution will change lives profoundly,” said JLR chief executive Ralf Speth.

While the UK hasn’t become a hotbed for autonomous vehicle testing like some U.S. states, like California, the country has quite generous laws about the testing of such vehicles. In fact, the UK never ratified the Vienna Convention, which requires drivers to have control of their vehicle at all times. This means no law changes had to be made for self-driving cars to test throughout the country.

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho paid a visit to Jaguar Land Rover’s factory in Solihull, where he assisted factory employees in building his new car, a model number 100,000 F-PACE.

The “Special One” even wore bespoke Jaguar overalls while making his way to the factory floor where he followed his car along the production line, though not before he have a pep talk to the team.

“It was an amazing experience to visit Jaguar’s factory and see all the cars, technology and hard work that goes into developing such a beautiful car. Jaguar is a brand that I have been involved with for many years,” said the Man United manager.

“Back in 2014, I was the first UK customer to receive the F-TYPE Coupe and now to become the 100,000th Jaguar F-PACE customer is something very special.”

In 2016, Mourinho got to experience the F-PACE at a high-performance driver training experience in the Arctic Circle, on a 60 km frozen late at Jaguar’s extreme testing facility in Arjeplog, Sweden.

“It’s great to have one of the most successful football managers drive the F-PACE, our SUV that has been voted as the best and most beautiful car in the world by the 2017 World Car of the Year jury. Just like Jose Mourinho, the F-PACE is all about individual style and top performance,” is what Jaguar design boss, Ian Callum had to say.

Jaguar Land Rover have announced their presence for the 2017 Los Angeles Auto Show, which kicks off on December 1 at the LA Convention Center, with a range of either new or significantly updated vehicles.

One of them is the 2018 Range Rover SVAutobiography, which will celebrate its global premiere on the North American shore.

The range-topping version of the SUV will benefit from the same visual updates as the facelifted Range Rover, which debuted last month with a new front end, tweaked cabin, and some revisions made in the engine department.

The automaker says that more details about the 2018 Range Rover SVAutobiography will be announced prior to the show, when they will also unveil the SVAutobiography Dynamic version.

JLR’s SVO division will also present the 2018 Range Rover Sport SVR, which benefits from the same key enhancements as the rest of the 2018MY lineup, while housing a 575hp supercharged V8 engine under the hood. Naught to 60mph (96km/h) takes just 4.3sec, and the top speed is electronically limited to 176mph (283km/h).

Making its US debut as well, after it was shown in Frankfurt some 2 months ago, is the Land Rover Discovery SVX Concept, which previews “the ultimate Discovery built for off-road enthusiasts seeking epic adventures”, says the automaker.

PHEV versions of the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport have been granted a US visa too, to show their enhanced exterior design in LA, and to inform visitors that they can be driven on electricity alone for up to 31 miles (50km).

The automaker’s first fully-electric production model, which goes on sale next year, is previewed by the Jaguar I-Pace Concept, joined by the I-Pace eTrophy prototype, which “is proof of the company’s electric intent and previews the world’s first single-make electric racing series that will follow rounds of the 2018/2019 FIA Formula E Championship”.

Jaguar will also display the E-Pace SUV, XRJ575 flagship luxury sedan, and XF Sportbrake, at the 2017 LA Auto Show.

BMW Was Reportedly Planning Its Own Version Of The McLaren Super Series 9
Posted by Michael Gauthier in BMW, Jaguar Land Rover, mclaren, Range Rover, Reports on 11 9th, 2017

BMW and McLaren came together to create the iconic McLaren F1 and rumors about a new tie-up have persisted for years.

According to Automobile Magazine, the two companies were working on a car earlier this year but the project has reportedly been called off. Details are limited but the publication says the company was planning to transform the next-generation McLaren Super Series into a high-end BMW.

As part of the transformation, the car would have reportedly received unique body work, an upgraded interior, and a revised hybrid powertrain featuring a V8 engine with bespoke cylinder heads. The report goes on to claim that BMW M boss Frank van Meel “spent more nights in Woking than in Munich over the summer” but development has now been halted.

While nothing is official, a senior BMW manager reportedly told the publication the car was a “great piece of kit but we came to the conclusion that it is the wrong car for these fast moving times.” Instead, the company will reportedly develop its own car which has a powertrain with more advanced forms of electrification.

Despite the end of the BMW-McLaren tie-up, the company is still reportedly working with Jaguar Land Rover on a new V8 engine called Project Jennifer. Set to be used by Range Rover, the engine will reportedly be a twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 that develops 640 hp (477 kW) and 590 lb-ft (799 Nm) of torque.

Land Rover Kills Three-Door Range Rover Evoque In U.S. 7
Posted by Brad Anderson in Jaguar Land Rover, Land Rover, Range Rover Evoque, Reports on 11 7th, 2017

Land Rover has made the decision to kill off the Range Rover Evoque three-door in the United States.

Motor Authority reports that the British automaker pulled the plug due to poor demand for the model in the U.S., where it was easily out-sold by the five-door and the two-door convertible.

Sales of the three-door Evoque will continue in other international markets.

In a bid to update the popular SUV, Land Rover is currently developing a next-generation model, expected to arrive in late 2018 as a 2019 model year in the U.S. The new model will retain the same D8 architecture as the current car but a host of new technologies will be featured. Styling inspiration will also be taken from the Range Rover Velar.
