Kia Telluride Full-Size SUV Concept Reportedly Heading To Production 16

Kia’s new Forte might have just made its debut at the 2018 Detroit Auto Show, but the Korean automaker is also working on another, totally different, project as well.

This project is the production version of the Telluride Concept that debuted a couple of years ago in Motor City, as confirmed to GoAuto on the sidelines of the Detroit Show by the brand’s President and Chief Design Officer, Peter Schreyer, who simply said: “yeah, we are working on that car, actually”, when asked about it.

The Telluride (production name unconfirmed) will sit at the top of the firm’s SUV range, above the Sorento, and it will be offered in North America and other markets, according to Kia Europe’s Chief Designer, Gregory Guillaume.

“I could imagine that there are other markets that would be interested in taking it… apart from America, so there could be other markets that are interested. For example, the one we used to have before the Mohave, it was pretty popular in Russia and those countries.”

However, “Europe doesn’t make much sense”, Guillaume said, adding that “it is a more difficult segment for us. We are pretty good with Sorento with large SUV in Europe”, and right-hand drive markets such as Australia are currently under the question mark. It also remains unknown when it will be launched or where it will be manufactured.

The concept displayed by Kia in 2016 was underpinned by the same architecture as the Sorento, but it had a larger footprint, a boxy exterior design and a minimalistic cabin. It also had a plug-in hybrid powertrain that combined a 3.5-liter V6 gasoline engine and an electric motor for a total of 400 horsepower, which might be one of the options available for the production version.

2019 Acura RDX Prototype (Almost) Ready For The Road 15

As promised, the 2019 Acura RDX Prototype has premiered at the Detroit Auto Show and as recently-leaked images revealed, it is essentially production-ready in all but name.

On a styling front, Acura hasn’t held back in transforming the vehicle’s body. As such, the RDX Prototype adopts the brand’s latest design language and scoffs in the face of the subtle and curvaceous crossovers on the market. It bears resemblances to other models in the Acura family but is much edgier and assured to split opinion.

Among the key styling changes are a muscular hood, tapered headlights and LED daytime running lights, roof-mounted spoiler, and a large circular tailpipe.

Step inside and you’ll find a large infotainment screen jutting out of the dashboard, digital gauges, and an intriguing gear selector panel. Elsewhere, the 2019 RDX Prototype includes brushed aluminum and wooden trimmings. Additionally, Acura says the RDX comes equipped with the best seats it has ever produced, complete with 16-way power adjustability and 4-way lumbar support.

Things don’t start and end on a styling front. Underneath the skin, Honda has made use of an all-new platform and extended the wheelbase by a generous 2.5-inches. Additionally, a 2.0-liter VTEC turbocharged four-cylinder engine that’s mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission comes as standard. The 2.0-liter has 40 per cent more torque than the outgoing RDX.

To ensure the engine and transmission are used to their fullest potential, Honda’s Super-Handling All Wheel Drive (SH-AWD) system has also been implemented. Featuring torque vectoring, the all-wheel drive system will provide both impressive on-road handling and a respectable level of off-road capabilities. The all-wheel drive system has four distinct drive modes; Sport, Sport+, Comfort, and Snow.

Other standout features include a 16-channel, 710-watt Acura ELS Studio 3D system that includes four ceiling-mounted speakers. The car also has a range of connected-car and driver-assistive features including Hill Start Assist, Surround-View Camera System, front and rear parking sensors, Rear Cross Traffic Monitor and Blind Spot Information system.

“The all-new RDX delivers a powerful statement about who we are and where we are headed as a brand, said vice president and general manager of Acura Jon Ikeda. “For our customers, the new RDX is a quantum leap forward in design, style and performance, with luxury features and technology that will elevate their ownership experience.”

Acura has also announced that the new RDX will be its first SUV offered at launch in A-Spec trim, a new range that adds sporty styling inside and out and will be offered on all core Acura models.

Lotus CEO All But Confirms An SUV Is Coming 15
Jan
Posted by Brad Anderson in Lotus, Reports, SUV on 01 15th, 2018

Lotus chief executive Jean-Marc Gales has all but confirmed that the brand’s long-awaited foray into the SUV world is going to happen.

Gales has led the British carmaker for the past three years and in that time, been instrumental in the brand launching dozens of new limited edition models and improving its finances, ultimately leading to Geely purchasing a controlling stake in the brand last year.

In an interview with Autonews, Gales said the Geely deal has made its SUV ambitions achievable.

“I’m fairly sure with the Geely parts bin at our disposal, we can design a Lotus crossover that has unique lightweight features, aerodynamics and handling that befits the Lotus brand.

“We are not just tied to sports cars, which is a fairly stable market worldwide. What is growing at double-digits, however, is the SUV market, especially the premium SUV market,” Gales said.

On the question of where a future Lotus SUV could be produced, Gales suggested that the marque could make use of Geely’s manufacturing plants in China. However, when it comes to sports cars, they will remain a British-only affair.

“Our sports cars will stay in the UK, that’s clear. Lotus is quintessentially a UK brand so we need that. If, in the future, we have one or two plants for the potential crossover, they should be close to where the destination market is. For SUVs, the biggest market in the world is China. That’s where Geely has plants. But, I don’t exclude anything at the moment.”

Interestingly, Gales went on to reveal that he is thinking of Lotus SUVs in a “couple of sizes”, indicating that more than one crossover from the brand could be produced.

Audi’s All-Electric E-Tron SUV Will Allegedly Be Unveiled This Fall 14
Jan
Posted by Cristian Gnaticov in audi, Autonomous, Electric Vehicles, Paris Auto Show, Reports, SUV on 01 14th, 2018

Audi may have started taking reservations for the all-new E-Tron SUV, but, according to reports, it won’t be revealed until this fall, probably at the Paris Auto Show in October.

Ingolstadt’s challenger to the likes of the Tesla Model X and Jaguar I-Pace is an important step in the Volkswagen Group’s push for electrification, and it also represents Audi’s answer to falling diesel sales.

Previewed by the concept car shown originally in 2015, the Audi E-Tron SUV is believed to get a more toned down styling for production, similar to that of the upcoming Q6, and to be underpinned by a modified version of the MLB architecture that’s also used by the Q5 and Q7.

No details about its zero-emission powertrain have been released so far, but the show car had three electric motors that worked together to produce 429hp and more than 800Nm (590lb-ft) of torque, which allowed it to sprint from 0 to 100km/h (62mph) in 4.6sec, and up to a top speed electronically limited at 210km/h (131mph). The electric motors will get their juice from a large capacity battery, which should give it a total range of 500km (311 miles) on a single charge.

Inside, the Audi E-Tron SUV is believed to offer seating for up to 5 and sport an interior design inspired from the latest A8, with the Virtual Cockpit taking center stage at the front. Finally, just like the flagship saloon, the zero-emission SUV is expected to feature Level 3 autonomous driving capability.

Aston Martin Might Be Going Public On The Stock Market 14
Jan
Posted by Joel V. Patel in ASTON MARTIN, Aston Martin DB11, Aston Martin Vantage, IPO, Reports, SUV on 01 14th, 2018

Aston Martin has plans to file for an initial public offering (IPO) later this year, targeting a valuation of approximately $6.8 billion (£5 billion), Bloomberg News reports, citing unnamed sources.

According to those sources, the British automaker reportedly held preliminary discussions with advisors about a valuation for the company, including its debt. Aston Martin’s future plans that include SUVs, starting with the DBX, has investors interested in looking into an IPO this year. The automaker has plans to enter the booming segment in 2019.

In terms of sales, Aston is coming off of a strong year, as it passed the 5,000-unit mark for the first time since 2008. Most of the sales came from the V12-powered DB11, but the recently launched all-new Vantage and the upcoming DBX crossover will surely give the brand a serious boost.

Things are still in the air, though, as the automaker could go in a different direction. When the news agency asked Aston Martin for a comment, the automaker was non-committal: “As a matter of policy, Aston Martin does not comment about speculation concerning future ownership or capital restructuring.”

Well, floating some of your shares has worked wonderfully for Ferrari and FCA, so we can’t see any reason why Aston wouldn’t go down the same route if they decide to raise some extra capital.

New-Age Mercedes-Benz G-Class Goes Dune Bashing 12

Posted by Brad Anderson in Detroit-Auto-Show, mercedes, Mercedes G-Class, Reports, SUV on 01 12th, 2018

With just a few days to go until the 2019 Mercedes-Benz G-Class premieres at the Detroit Auto Show, a new teaser image of the off-roader has been published.

Like the previous teaser, which showed the G-Class driving through snow, this image also focuses on the vehicle’s off-road prowess, depicting the G-Class speeding through sand dunes with ease. The image also offers a small glimpse of the revised front end of the latest-generation model.

Recently leaked images of the off-roader have revealed that for the most part, it will look strikingly similar to the outgoing model. In fact, immediately obvious visual changes are limited to revised bumpers and modified headlights and taillights. Evidently, Mercedes-Benz didn’t want to mess with the design of the G-Class too much, perhaps due to concerns that it could alienate customers.

Alongside the exterior modifications, a host of serious changes are afoot for the interior. In fact, the car will be available with two huge optional digital displays on the dashboard and gauge cluster. Additionally, there will be two removable cup holders, and improved passenger space.

Engine details remain unknown but it has been confirmed that the 2019 G-Class will adopt independent front suspension, providing the vehicle with better road and off-road performance.

Stay tuned for more details about the new Mercedes-Benz G-Class in the coming days.

Nissan IMx Concept Makes U.S. Debut At CES 11

The Nissan IMx Concept has made its U.S. debut at this year’s CES convention, and has taken center stage at the automaker’s booth.

Like the concept that was first unveiled at the 2017 Tokyo Motor Show, the IMx on display in Las Vegas is painted in a shade of matte white that’s contrasted by a selection of bright red accents. Throw in a set of huge wheels with silver and black spokes and you have a head-turning concept that we hope won’t get too watered down in the production version.

The Japanese company recently confirmed that its new EV will not share its underpinnings with the Leaf, but use a bespoke platform instead.

Power for the IMx comes from two electric motors delivering a combined 430 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque, while a large battery pack results in it having a range in excess of 373 miles (600 km).

New Renault Small SUV Concept Might Debut At Auto Expo 2018 10
Jan

Fueled by the success of the $4,700 Kwid, Renault is now looking into yet another small and low-priced SUV, aimed at India and other emerging markets.

A report coming from LiveMint, which is quoting sources familiar with the matter, states that the new vehicle might debut as early as next month, as a concept, at the Auto Expo 2018 event, which starts on February 9.

The study is expected to evolve into a production model and arrive next year. It will be a sub-4-meter product, which should catch consumers attention, as cars that are shorter than 4 meters (13ft) are more affordable to buy in India due to lower taxes.

Development of the yet-unnamed vehicle is reportedly taking place at the Renault-Nissan Alliance’s Research and Development center in Chennai, the birthplace of the Kwid.

In other related news, it seems that Renault is also working on something called “a premium hatchback”. We’ll take the ‘premium’ part with a grain of salt, but it appears that this one will be sub-4-meter as well, and it could also make its way as a concept to the Auto Expo 2018, prior to its 2019 launch, when it should be underpinned by a modified version of the CMF-A architecture, shared with the Datsun Redi-Go.

Byton Premieres Crossover Concept At CES With Ambitious Production Goals 8
Jan
Posted by Brad Anderson in CES, china, Electric Vehicles, new cars, Reports, SUV on 01 8th, 2018

Electric carmaker startup Byton has just premiered its Crossover Concept at CES 2018 in Las Vegas and if the vehicle reaches production, it could be a very tantalizing prospect.

Byton has revealed that its crossover will be able to travel approximately 250 miles in base specification and feature a battery that can be charged with 150 miles of range in a mere 20 minutes. Additionally, it’ll take just 30 minutes to top the battery up to 80 per cent of its capacity.

Beyond its powertrain, Byton says the Crossover Concept will have Level 3 autonomous functionality by the time it hits the production launch and be capable of achieving Level 4 autonomy at a later date. Byton has also ditched traditional wing mirrors for the crossover and instead uses two small cameras that direct vision to the vehicle’s cabin.

The exterior design of the vehicle is intriguing but it is the cabin where things get really interesting. The concept features a huge 49-inch display that stretches the whole width of the dashboard which Byton says will make its way into the production vehicle. Furthermore, the Crossover Concept adopts a large display in the center of the steering wheel but we don’t think that’ll make it to production due to the lack of space for an airbag.

Other intriguing features of the vehicle include a customized version of Amazon Alexa and the ability for the car to monitor the heart rate and blood pressure of occupants.

The founders of Byton say the crossover will reach production in 2019 and start at around $45,000 with the Chinese, U.S., and European markets all being targeted. If the vehicle proves successful, it could be joined by an electric sedan and electric MPV.

2019 Mercedes-Benz G-Class Plows Into The Snow In Latest Teaser 7
Jan
Posted by Brad Anderson in Detroit-Auto-Show, mercedes, Mercedes G-Class, Reports, SUV on 01 7th, 2018

The all-new Mercedes-Benz G-Class has already been leaked in all of its boxy glory, but the German automaker is continuing to tease its new off-roader, recently sharing this image on Facebook.

In the picture, the new G-Class is pictured traversing through deep snow, which implies that it will be just as capable off-road as its predecessor. This will be reassuring to anyone who might have feared that Mercedes would make the G-Class softer.

In terms of its design, the new G-Class looks more like a facelift than an all-new vehicle. In fact, subtle changes to the front and rear fascias are the only notable changes that jump out. Inside, however, things are radically different, thanks to the all-new design and (optional) twin digital displays, two removable cup holders, and improved passenger space.

One key mechanical upgrade of the new G-Class is the implementation of independent front suspension that promises to improve dynamics both on the road and off-road. In fact, the vehicle will have approach and departure angles of 31° and 30° respectively and a maximum fording depth of 70 cm (27.5 inches).

The new G-Class will make its official premiere in a few days, at the Detroit Auto Show that opens on January 15.
