Borgward To Launch In Europe Next Year 21

Posted by Brad Anderson in Borgward, Borgward BX5, Borgward BX7, Reports, SUV on 11 21st, 2017

Borgward has confirmed that it will launch in Europe in the first quarter of 2018.

According to Auto Express, the reborn German carmaker will first launch the BX7 in Germany and neighboring countries. However, for interested SUV buyers in the UK, they may have to wait a little longer to enjoy a Borgward as no right-hand drive BX7 variant has been confirmed.

The marque first unveiled the BX7 in September 2015 and in the two years’ since, has been refining the model and getting it ready for the road. The entry-level model is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder delivering 224 PS and mated to a seven-speed automatic transmission. A plug-in hybrid version with a combined 401 PS has also been developed.

Borgward recently launched in China ahead of its European arrival and according to chief design officer Anders Warming, this has provided the automaker with valuable experience before launching in its home country.

Shortly after European deliveries of the Borgward BX7 commence, the smaller BX5 will arrive. Unlike the BX7, a right-hand drive version of the BX5 has been confirmed.

Bollinger Showcases The Electric B1’s Off-Road Prowess 19

Keen to prove that its all-electric B1 SUV is more than just a showpiece, Bollinger has commenced off-road testing of the vehicle, recently taking it to a number of testing areas in Colorado and Utah.

The first of the videos shows the B1 climbing up the Engineer Pass in Colorado, forcing the vehicle across rocks and through water crossings. For mild off-roading like this, the B1 seems surprisingly at home, despite being the brand’s first attempt at a production vehicle.

As for the other two videos, they show the B1 testing in Utah, climbing a hill in Moab and sliding around on sand dunes.

Powering the B1 is an electric motor delivering 360 hp and 472 lb-ft of torque. The vehicle will then be sold with either a 60 kWh or 100 kWh battery pack with ranges varying between 120 and 200 miles.

Since the vehicle’s debut in July, the company claims to have received over 10,000 reservations.

GM Targets Young Customers With China-Only Baojun 530 Compact SUV 18

General Motors’ SAIC-GM-Wuling Chinese joint venture has unveiled the Baojun 530 at the 2017 Guangzhou Auto Show. Following hot on the heels of the 560 and 510, this is the brand’s third SUV, and it’s also their largest, being 4,655mm (183.3in) long, 1,835mm (72.2in) wide, and 1,760mm (69.3in) tall.

On the outside, it looks very similar to the Baojun 510 that debuted at last year’s Guangzhou show and its highlights include the large grille that’s flanked by two slim headlights, a floating-style roof, rectangular wheel arches and one-piece taillights.

Although no images of the interior have been released yet, we expect the new Baojun 530 to benefit from the same materials used in its smaller sibling, including leather and metallic trim, along with an infotainment system, climate control and multi-function steering wheel, among others.

Baojun says that their latest SUV has a McPherson strut front and multi-link rear suspension, for “maximized ride comfort, handling and stability”, while power comes from either a 1.8-liter naturally aspirated engine or a 1.5-liter turbocharged unit.

Pricing hasn’t been announced yet, but the Baojun 510 starts at RMB 68,800 ($10,373) in China, so we expect a higher tag for the 530.

BMW Trademarks Selection Of i-Branded SUV Models 16

It appears as if BMW is planning a dramatic expansion of its i-Performance sub-brand, recently trademarking the names of no less than nine new vehicles.

According to recent applications, BMW has acquired trademarks for iX1, iX2, iX3, iX4, iX5, iX6, iX7, iX8, and iX9. This is the clearest indication yet than the carmaker intends on bringing its advanced hybrid technologies to its popular SUV models, Autocar reports.

However, it is worth noting that there’s very little chance BMW will ever release nine i-branded SUV models. In all probability, most of the names have been trademarked simply to ensure no other carmaker can use them. For example, BMW trademarked i1, i2, i3, i4, i5, i6, i7, i8, and i9 in 2010 but so far, only the i3 and i8 have been built.

Whatever the company is planning, we recently learned that all BMW electric, plug-in hybrid, and internal combustion engine powered models built from 2020 will share the same platform.

A limited-run version of the Nissan Juke, dubbed the GT Sport PlayStation, has just been introduced to the Spanish and Portuguese markets.

Created to celebrate Gran Turismo Sport on PlayStation, the special-edition Juke will be limited to just 500 units and be available in either Ultramarine Blue or Pearl White.

To ensure that the Juke GT Sport PlayStation stands out from a run-of-the-mill Juke, the Japanese automaker has fitted a set of Tokyo Black 18-inch wheels, PlayStation graphics, custom badging, faux carbon fiber door sill protectors, Gran Turismo Sport floor mats, and a shark fin antenna.

Eight New Hyundai SUVs Coming Your Way By 2020 15

Hyundai has come out with a plan to launch eight new or re-engineered SUV models in the United States by the year 2020.

Kicking off with the new Kona, which is expected in March, the new range of SUVs will include everything from a smaller A-segment model, to an eight-passenger mid-size one.

Hyundai says that the new models will be powered by all of the available powertrain technologies, including petrol, diesel, hydrogen fuel cell and battery electric in a bid to cover every need.

“Very soon we are going to have the most diverse CUV powertrain lineup in the industry,” said Mike O’Brien, VP of product, corporate and digital planning, Hyundai Motor America. “These vehicles will show the engineering prowess of the more than 13,000 engineers Hyundai Motor Company has working on current and future models every single day. Our customers are going to have a lot of great CUV choices in our dealerships.”

One of the most interesting additions to Hyundai’s range will of course be the electric version of the Kona, which is expected to debut at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show. If reports are true, Hyundai’s first electric crossover will offer more than 240 miles of driving range on a single charge.

In addition, the brand’s next-gen fuel cell SUV is set to offer more than 500 miles (800km) of driving range while the entry-level member of the new SUV family will make its appearance last, after Hyundai launches its new midsize SUV.

“The Kona is only the beginning of our product revolution for Hyundai,” O’Brien, added. “These vehicles are aimed squarely at the sales leaders in each segment and will emphasize Hyundai’s continued focus on sustainability and efficiency without compromising performance.”

Toyota/Mazda Plant To Be In Alabama Or North Carolina 15

Three-and-a-half months after Toyota and Mazda announced a $1.6 billion joint car factory in the U.S., Bloomberg reports that the plant will be located in either Alabama or North Carolina.

Spokesmen at the two carmakers have refused to comment on the reports but Bloomberg says Alabama and North Carolina have beat out the likes of Tennessee, Texas, and South Carolina for the factory.

When the facility is completed and production commences in 2021, it will build 300,000 cars annually and create roughly 4,000 new jobs. Toyota has confirmed that it will build the Corolla at the facility while Mazda says it will build SUVs at the site. The Japanese firm has yet to specify which models these will be.

Speaking about the plant at an announcement in early August, Mazda president and chief executive Masamichi Kogai said the alliance could energize the industry.

“Nothing would please me more than if, through this alliance, we can help to energize the auto industry and create more car fans by bringing together two competitive spirits to spur each other on, leading to innovations and fostering talent and leaders.”

Jon Olsson’s Custom Mercedes G500 4×4² Looks Ready To Drive Across Mars 14

Not long after parting ways with his custom, 810 hp Rolls-Royce Wraith, professional skier Jon Olsson has picked up a new ride, this time a Mercedes-Benz G500 4×4².

In typical fashion, the YouTuber vlogger hasn’t kept the off-roader stock and a reader of AutoJunk recently snapped his car on a highway in the Netherlands.

Modifications have reportedly been carried out by Absolute Motors and despite the images being rather blurry, a number of custom parts are visible. For starters, a large roof rack has been fitted alongside a small ladder on the rear. Additionally, there also appears to be some sort of contraption on the hood but it’s difficult to ascertain what it is.

As with almost any car owned by Olsson, the exterior has also adopted a distinctive livery and a number of stickers from his sponsors.

The G500 4×4² has been a runaway success for Mercedes-Benz, selling in far greater numbers than ever expected, proving that the G-Class remains as popular as ever.

Jaguar F-Pace SVR Gets Put Through Its Paces 14

Eager to cash in on demand for its sleek F-Pace SUV, Jaguar is developing a performance-focused variant, expected to adopt the SVR badge.

Filmed during testing on a number of occasions throughout the past 12 months, the F-Pace SVR promises to scare rivals, including the Porsche Macan Turbo and Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio.

To do so, Jaguar Land Rover will install its familiar 5.0-liter supercharged V8, inevitably delivering over 500 hp and potentially as much as 550 hp. Such grunt should enable the SUV to accelerate to 100 km/h (62 mph) in roughly 4 seconds.

This particular prototype can be distinguished from others seen in the past as its hood has large air extractors and there’s a bespoke rear bumper and quad tailpipe setup. The V8 also sounds very familiar, although it doesn’t have all the cracks and pops provided by V8-powered F-Type models.

Expect to see the Jaguar F-Pace SVR in the first half of 2018.

Indian Firm Creates Mahindra-Based Jeep Wrangler Replica 13

This Jeep Wrangler looks just like any other. In fact, if you asked almost anyone what vehicle it is, they too would say it’s a Jeep. However, it’s not.

What we are instead looking at is a Jeep Wrangler replica built by an Indian company called Jeep Studio.

The vehicle started life out as a Mahindra Thar, an off-roader which already looks very similar to the outgoing Wrangler. However, to make the thing appear more genuine, Jeep Studio spent four months converting it with all-new body panels.

Indian Autos Blog reports that the Thar’s new body panels have been complemented by LED headlights and taillights, wing mirrors from a Wrangler, hood latches, reinforced tailgate, toughened glass, 33-inch Maxxis tires, black wheels, and matte black paint.

Imitation really is the sincerest form of flattery.

VW Confirms New South American SUV And $653M Plant Investment 13
Nov
Posted by Brad Anderson in Reports, South America, SUV, VW on 11 13th, 2017

Volkswagen has announced a 560 million-euro ($653 million) investment that will lead to the creation of a new SUV for the South American market.

In the coming five years, the investment will be made at the firm’s Pacheco, Argentina production facility. Construction of the new SUV is expected to commence in 2020.

In a statement, Volkswagen revealed that the SUV will be based on its MQB architecture aimed specifically at suiting the requirements and desires of customers across South America. No confirmation has been provided as to what powertrains will be on offer to customers but early reports cite a 1.4-liter TSI and 1.5-liter TSI with cylinder deactivation as two likely candidates.

“We are laying the foundations for the brand’s growth on international markets with Volkswagen’s Transform 2025+ strategy,” VW brand chief executive Herbert Diess said. “South America and Argentina play an important role in this regard. Key elements of the growth strategy are the biggest model offensive in the history of the brand and the systematic regionalization of our business.”

The new SUV will be one of 20 new models set to be introduced by VW before the end of the decade.

GM’s Latest SUV, The Wuling Hong Guang S3, Costs Less Than $9,000 10
Nov
Posted by Cristian Gnaticov in china, GM, new cars, prices, SAIC, SUV on 11 10th, 2017

If you live in China, for a mere RMB 56,800, which comes out to just $8,558 at the current exchange rates, you could get GM’s latest SUV, the Wuling Hong Guang S3.

This makes it more affordable than the entry-level Ford Fiesta on our side of the pond, and it stays that way even in its range-topping guise, which can be had at RMB 81,800 ($12,325).

However, there’s a major catch here, because the Wuling Hong Guang S3 is a China-only vehicle, made by the automotive giant’s local joint venture, SAIC-GM-Wuling, so don’t expect to see it in Western markets, not now, not ever.

For what it’s worth, the Wuling Hong Guang S3 has an exterior design reminiscent of old Chevys and Daewoos, but it has been adorned with LED DRLs integrated on the sides of the front bumper, fog lamps, and a floating-style roofline.

Inside it gets a clean layout, with dual-tone leather trim depending on the selected grade, an 8-inch LCD screen, large electronic instrument display, and a quartz clock, for what the automaker describes as an added “sense of luxury”. It has a 2+2+3 seating layout, and all three rows of seats have their own air-conditioning vents and USB ports.

Based on the same platform as the Hong Guang MPV, the SUV also features a multi-link independent rear suspension, and some safety features such as ESC, hill-start hold control, cruise control, and others.

The engine family includes two members: naturally aspirated and turbocharged versions of a 1.5-liter unit.
