Chevy Opens Camaro Hot Wheels 50th Anniversary Order Books Next Month 13
Jan
Posted by Michael Gauthier in Chevrolet, Chevrolet Camaro, prices, USA on 01 13th, 2018

Chevrolet has announced that the 2018 Camaro Hot Wheels 50th Anniversary Edition will be available for order from February 1st.

Originally unveiled last fall, this special edition of the Camaro features a Crush orange exterior that draws inspiration from the Hot Wheels tracks that many of us grew up with as kids. The model also has a Satin Graphite ground effect package as well as Satin Graphite stripes with Silver Ice Metallic accents.

The exterior styling changes don’t stop there, as designers installed a revised grille with a black bowtie emblem and Galvano chrome inserts. Other changes include tinted taillights, special fender badges, and 20-inch forged aluminum wheels with unique center caps.

The interior largely carries over from the regular Camaro, but there are a handful of touches that separate the special edition from the standard model. These include illuminated doorsill plates, orange kneepads, two-tone leather seats, special floor mats with orange stitching and a 50th Anniversary Hot Wheels badge on the steering wheel.

The Hot Wheels 50th Anniversary Edition is based on the Camaro 2LT and 2SS and the package costs an additional $4,995 over those models’ MSRP, which means potential customers should expect to spend at least $35,000.

Drunk Florida Mom Crashes Into Four Cars, Then Lets Toddler Wander In Traffic 13
Jan
Posted by Brad Anderson in Accidents, Offbeat News, Reports, USA on 01 13th, 2018

A woman from Citrus County, Florida has been arrested after crashing her car with her two-year-old son on board and subsequently resisting arrest.

Brianna Dee Knox, 28, was taken into custody by the Florida Highway Patrol after driving recklessly and crashing into four cars on I-4 at roughly 5 PM on January 9.

The Florida Highway Patrol reports that, after the crash, Knox’s red 2001 Honda broke down under an overpass. Upon exiting the vehicle, Knox started acting “erratically and disturbed”, even letting her young son walk towards traffic while she relieved herself on the side of the road.

The Miami Herald reports that when troopers David Flores and Alain Hernandez arrived on the scene, Knox resisted arrest, kicked one of the officer’s in the chest and hand and violently struggled as they handcuffed her.

Knox was arrested on charges including driving under the influence, battery on a law enforcement officer, leaving the scene of a crash and child neglect. She is being held at the Hills borough County jail on $15,000 bail.

Michigan University Students Role-Play Autonomous Car Crisis 13
Jan
Posted by Sergiu Tudose in Autonomous, Reports, Tech, USA on 01 13th, 2018

University of Michigan students are trying to tackle an issue that the automotive industry will need to deal with in the future: what to do in case autonomous systems fail.

In total, there are thirty teams of four to six students role-playing this crisis scenario, all gunning for a $3,000 scholarship as part of the Stephen M. Ross School of Business’ annual Leadership Crisis Challenge.

According to Autonews, the students first learn the details of their crisis scenario just like a regular automaker would, through social media, e-mail, phone calls and direct meetings. Afterwards, they have 24 hours to mitigate the crisis.

“There is significant uncertainty about how the industry will take shape around autonomous vehicles, what factors will differentiate winners from losers in the marketplace, what legal and regulatory infrastructure will evolve, and how it will all ultimately impact society,” stated Brian Flanagan, an executive for the business school’s Leadership Center.

He added that in scenarios where there is no driver to blame, “the businesses and business leaders who produce the technology will be squarely in the crosshairs.”

Automakers such as Tesla have already dealt with backlash regarding their Autopilot technology back in May of 2016, when there was a fatality on board a Model S, and a number of claims that its autonomous tech isn’t exactly ready and trustworthy yet.

You Can Now Rent A 575HP Jaguar F-Type SVR For $299 Per Day 12
Jan
Posted by Joel V. Patel in Jaguar, Jaguar F-Type, Reports, USA on 01 12th, 2018

The Jaguar F-Type SVR is the most hardcore F-Type the British automaker sells. With a starting price tag of roughly $127,000, only well-off enthusiasts have the opportunity to experience the high-performance Jag. But Enterprise has fixed that issue by allowing drivers to rent the vehicle in select locations.

The F-Type SVR is a 575-hp beast thanks to its supercharged 5.0-liter V8 which sounds amazing. In addition to the breathtaking soundtrack, the F-Type can get to 60 mph in just 3.5 seconds and onto a top speed of 200 mph.

Thanks to a new partnership with Jaguar, Enterprise Rent-A-Car is allowing drivers to rent the sports car in 15 locations around the U.S. The F-Type SVR will become a part of Enterprise’s Exotic Car Collection fleet in the following locations: Las Vegas, Washington, D.C., Atlanta, Chicago, Orlando, Fla., Los Angeles, Pittsburgh, South Florida, Seattle, North Carolina, Phoenix, Nashville, Tenn., Minnesota, and Naples, Fla.

The F-Type SVR joins the likes of the Ferrari California, Lamborghini Huracan, Porsche 911, and Maserati GranTurismo in Enterprise’s list of available exotic rentals and slots in as the second most powerful car available, behind the 602hp Huracan.

Depending on your location, and other factors, it can be rented from Enterprise for approximately $299 a day. This might sound a bit expensive, but if you consider that renting an Audi R8 Spyder costs roughly $799 a day, then it’s a bargain.

Enterprise’s Exotic Car Collection has grown to include more than 50 locations across the U.S. after being founded in 2006. The American car rental company is looking to expand to more states in the States and Canada in the near future, giving more enthusiasts the opportunity to live out their automotive dreams, even for a while.

New Ram HD Confirmed For 2020, Will Be Built In The U.S. 11
Jan
Posted by Michael Gauthier in Jeep, RAM, USA on 01 11th, 2018

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles has announced plans to invest more than $1 billion into the Warren Truck Assembly Plant in Michigan to prepare the plant to build the next-generation of Ram Heavy Duty pickups.

Production is slated to begin in 2020 and the new Ram Heavy Duty trucks will be built alongside the Jeep Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer.

The decision means the trucks will no longer be built at the Saltillo Truck Assembly Plant in Mexico. Instead, that facility will be repurposed to produce to build “future commercial vehicles for global distribution.”

The move is expected to create 2,500 new jobs at the Warren facility and the company says the decision solidifies the United States as the “global manufacturing hub for Ram products.”

Little is known about the next-generation of Ram Heavy Duty pickups but we’ll get a glimpse at how they will look when the 2019 Ram 1500 debuts at the North American International Auto Show next week.

Besides announcing the decision to move truck production to the United States, FCA revealed approximately 60,000 hourly and salaried workers will be getting a bonus of $2,000 in the second quarter to recognize their “continued commitment to the company’s success.” FCA says this and the truck announcement were both made possible by the passage of U.S. tax reform which occurred late last year.

Jan
Posted by Michael Gauthier in mercedes, Mercedes GLC, PHEV, prices, Reports, USA on 01 11th, 2018

Mercedes might have given up on diesel engines in the United States but its plug-in hybrid lineup continues to grow as the company has released pricing information for the 2018 GLC 350e.

Car and Driver reports the model will go sale this summer and a listing on the company’s website reveals pricing will start at $49,990. That’s $7,940 more than the GLC 300 4MATIC but the crossover is eligible for a $4,460 federal tax credit which lowers the difference to $3,480.

In return, buyers will receive a nicely equipped crossover that features LED lighting units, rain-sensing windshield wipers, and a power liftgate. The model also has privacy glass, a rearview camera, and 18-inch alloy wheels.

Moving into the cabin, drivers will sit behind a three-spoke multifunction steering wheel and find themselves surrounding by natural grain brown ash wood trim. Other highlights include a 14-way power driver seat, a dual-zone automatic climate control system, and an infotainment system with a 7-inch display.

Power is provided by a plug-in hybrid powertrain that consists of a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, an electric motor, and a lithium-ion battery pack. This setup enables the crossover to produce a combined output of 320 hp (238 kW) and 413 lb-ft (559 Nm) of torque. In terms of performance, the all-wheel drive model can accelerate from 0-60 mph in just 6.2 seconds.

Mercedes hasn’t released fuel economy data but the crossover’s battery can be recharged in less than 2.5 hours. The model also has a number of eco-friendly features including a haptic accelerator pedal which pulses twice in ECO mode to let drivers know they can “save fuel without reducing performance by letting up on the gas.” The GLC also has a radar-based regenerative braking system which automatically adjusts itself to recuperate as much energy as possible.

Sweet Home Alabama, Toyota And Mazda Pick Huntsville For $1.6 Billion Joint Plant 10
Jan
Posted by Michael Gauthier in Mazda, TOYOTA, Toyota Corolla, USA on 01 10th, 2018

Following a report earlier today, Mazda and Toyota have officially announced their new U.S. factory will be located in Huntsville, Alabama.

The plant is slated to cost $1.6 billion and it will have an annual capacity of 300,000 units. Production will be evenly split between the Toyota Corolla and an unconfirmed Mazda crossover.

The plant will open in 2021 and be located approximately 14 miles (22 km) from the Toyota Motor Manufacturing Alabama plant which builds an assortment of different engines for vehicles such as the Camry, Highlander, and Tundra. The new facility is expected to create up to 4,000 jobs and it will become Toyota’s 11th manufacturing facility in the United States.

In a statement, Mazda CEO Masamichi Kogai said “Mazda makes cars with a clear vision of how we want to inspire people, contribute to society and help preserve the beauty of the earth. By making such cars here in Alabama, we hope that over time our plant will come to occupy a special place in the hearts of our employees and the local community.”

His sentiments were echoed by Toyota President Akio Toyoda who said “Our investment to establish a new vehicle assembly plant with Mazda builds on the strong success we have enjoyed in Alabama where we produce engines for the North American market.”

The announcement is a major victory for Alabama as several states – reportedly including Tennessee, Texas, North Carolina and South Carolina – were in the running for the plant.

The 2018 Lexus RX 350L will go on sale in the United States on January 16th and the company is gearing up for the occasion by launching a new advertising campaign for the three-row crossover.

The campaign will kick off on January 13th with a new commercial called “Emily.” The video features a little girl, named Emily, who says her parents got a new car but claims “it’s mine.” The clip then shows the girl and her friends being taken to a birthday party and being surrounded by her pets and stuffed animals. The video then ends with Emily’s mother asking her if she’s excited to meet her new baby sister as the girl gives a sad face indicating she doesn’t want to share the crossover.

The ad isn’t exactly Super Bowl material but it will air during the 2018 Winter Olympics and on networks such as CBS, HGTV, ESPN, and the Golf Channel.

The 2018 RX 350L will be priced from $47,670 which makes it $4,400 more expensive than the standard model. That’s a significant price jump but the crossover is 4.3 inches (110 mm) longer and offers seating for up to seven people.

Power is provided by a 3.5-liter V6 engine that produces 290 hp (216 kW) and 263 lb-ft (356 Nm) of torque. It is connected to an eight-speed automatic transmission which can be paired to an optional all-wheel drive system for an additional $1,400.

2018 BMW 540d xDrive Brings Diesel Power To The United States 9
Jan
Posted by Michael Gauthier in BMW, BMW 5-Series, diesel, Reports, USA on 01 9th, 2018

BMW’s diesel-powered lineup is about to get a new addition as the EPA has signed off on the new 540d xDrive, as reported on TCC.

Designed to appeal to diesel fans, the model is expected to mirror the 530d which is offered in other markets. As a result, the car should have a 3.0-liter diesel engine that develops 261 hp (265 PS / 195 kW) and 457 lb-ft (620 Nm) of torque. The engine is connected to an eight-speed automatic transmission and an all-wheel drive system which enables the sedan to accelerate from 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) in 5.4 seconds.

The EPA listing for the 2018 540d xDrive reveals the model will be rated at 26 mpg city, 36 mpg highway, and 30 mpg combined. The government agency goes on to say drivers can expect to spend around $1,500 annually to refuel the luxury sedan.

The 540d xDrive will reportedly go on sale in the United States next month and cost $62,995 including destination charges. That’s significantly more than the 530e xDrive iPerformance which features a plug-in hybrid powertrain that enables the model to travel up to 15 miles (24 km) on electricity alone.

California Gets A Step Closer To Banning Conventionally Powered Vehicles 4
Jan
Posted by Michael Gauthier in Electric Vehicles, fuel cell, USA on 01 4th, 2018

California state assemblyman Phil Ting has finally introduced his bill in the legislature which seeks to ban the sale of new vehicles powered by gasoline and diesel engines.

Ting has been talking about the bill for months and we’re learning more about what could happen if it eventually becomes law.

The bill is called the Clean Cars 2040 Act and it would prevent the state from accepting original registrations for vehicles that are not zero emissions. The bill would go into effect after January 1st, 2040 and it would effectively ban the sale of vehicles that don’t use electric or fuel-cell powertrains. The bill goes also specifies “zero emissions vehicles cannot produce exhaust emissions of any criteria pollutant or greenhouse gas under any operational mode or condition.”

The heart of the bill is only a couple sentences long and it doesn’t apply to large commercial vehicles that weigh over 10,001 pounds (4,535 kg). It also does “not apply to vehicles owned by people moving into California from other states.”

In a press release, Ting said “California has long led the nation in promoting environmental protection and public health through visionary policies and technological innovations” but “it’s time that we clear the path for emissions-free transportation and take significant steps to achieve our ambitious emissions reduction goals.” He went on to claim that vehicles running on fossil fuels are responsible for nearly 40 percent of California’s greenhouse gas emissions and the bill is a “mechanism to ensure a healthier future for Californians and the entire region.”
