This Toyota 86 Time Attack Car Has A BMW M5 V10 11

If you want to transform a Toyota 86 into a time attack machine, you could slap a turbo on the 2.0-liter four-cylinder or simply install an LS crate engine.

However, the Australian owner of this 86 decided against both of those options and has instead paired the Japanese sports car with BMW’s desirable S85 5.0-liter V10 found in the older M5 and M6 models.

Created by Zoom Garage, this 86 recently competed in Sydney’s World Time Attack Challenge and turned on the heat, not only looking good but also performing extremely well at Sydney Motorsport Park.

Rather than use the SMG transmission traditionally mated to the E60 M5’s V10, Zoom Garage opted for the six-speed manual from the E92 M3. Interestingly, the massive V10 slotted into the engine bay with relative ease, it was only the gearbox that caused a few headaches, forcing the tuner to customize the transmission tunnel to make everything fit.

Surprisingly, the V10 isn’t all that much heavier than the car’s standard flat-four. As standard, it weighs roughly 35 kg (77 lbs) more. However, by modifying the engine and installing a lightweight air intake, Zoom has significantly lowered its weight, ensuring that it is now just 10 kg (22 lbs) heavier than the flat-four. The S85 has also been modified with a dry sump setup alongside fuel pump and injector upgrades to allow it to run on E85 fuel.

2018 Toyota 86 Marching To America With New GT Grade 18
Dec
Posted by Cristian Gnaticov in new cars, Reports, TOYOTA, Toyota 86 on 12 18th, 2017

Toyota are selling the 86 with the ‘GT’ prefix throughout Europe, with no major styling or technical differences to the one offered on our shores.

However, the ‘GT’ moniker is coming to North America too, though as a new trim level for the 2018MY, reports CarsDirect, citing a leaked order guide.

The 2018 Toyota 86 GT (not to be confused with Europe’s GT 86) brings new leather upholstery on the seats, steering wheel, and parking brake handle, with silver contrast stitching, heated front seats, multi-function steering wheel, dual-zone climate control, push-button start, and an “anti-theft device”.

Elsewhere, all models get a tweaked version of the 4.2-inch infotainment system, which displays the G-force meter, tachometer, torque output, and temperature, whereas the modified LED fog lamps at the front, an “underbody aerodynamic panel”, and body-color accents complete it.

The reports says that the 2018 Toyota 86 GT will go on sale from $29,280, including a $895 destination charge, for the six-speed manual gearbox version, while the six-speed automatic model can be had with a $720 premium.

It’s worth noting that the Subaru BRZ, offers most of these ‘comfort’ features for less, as it can be had from $28,465 in the range-topping Limited grade.

Toyota’s 86 Performance Kit Adds Tons Of Stuff, Except, Well…Performance 2

Ever since it was launched, both the Press and the public have been clamoring for Toyota to make the 86 more powerful, but the company didn’t satisfy their requests.

What they did recently was the introduction of a performance kit in Australia. Offered on the GTS and GT grades, regardless of the selected transmission, it adds an AUD $2,200 and $2,900 (USD $1,665 – $2,195) premium respectively, and comes with a number of mechanical and visual enhancements.

The list includes larger Brembo brakes, for improved stopping power, specially-tuned Sachs performance dampers to increase handling stability and responsiveness, and a set of 17-inch alloy wheels, with a 10-spoke pattern and anthracite finish.

Additionally, buyers of the new performance pack, which used to be offered on a limited-run of just 60 cars back in June, can order the new Moon Slate exterior color in a special version that gets black finish for the wheels, side mirror casings, and rear spoiler, and red interior trim, as well, from AUD $39,400 (USD $29,835).

Finally, the introduction of the optional kit is joined by an upgrade made to the Toyota 86’s satelline navigation system on the GT grade, and updated multimedia system across the range.

Prices for the tweaked Toyota 86 start from AUD $31,440 (USD $23,807) in Australia for the 6-speed manual gearbox version, and AUD $36,640 (USD $27,745) for the six-speed automatic.

So, despite the “performance” label, the 86 gets lots of things but not improved performance. OK Toyota, we got the message: even though the chassis can handle it, you have no intention to give your compact coupe more power. Guess we’ll have to cross our fingers and wait for its replacement for that.
