GM’s New Autonomous Vehicle Has No Steering Wheel or Pedals 12

While both automakers as well as suppliers are working hard on developing completely autonomous vehicles, the prototypes they’re putting out on the road still have traditional controls.

Not this one, though. What we have here is the first image of GM’s new Cruise AV, a self-driving prototype with no steering wheel, pedals, shifter, or manual controls of any kind (and not to be confused with the Chevy Cruze).

GM isn’t saying much else about it, but it’s quite obvious that we’re looking at the inside of a modified Bolt EV, missing all of its usual controls and fitted instead with a symmetrical dashboard.

Also, out the windshield you can see the skyline of San Francisco, where GM’s Cruise division is based.

The automaker says the vehicle is “production-ready” and has formally asked the US Department of Transportation for permission to start testing it on public roadways beginning next year.

Autonomous Chevy Bolt Involved In Motorcycle Crash In San Francisco 21

It has emerged that one of Cruise Automation’s self-driving Chevrolet Bolts was involved in a crash with a motorcycle in San Francisco.

In California Department of Motor Vehicles documents uncovered by CNET, it’s been discovered that the Bolt and motorcycle collided on December 7 at the corner of Oak Street and Fillmore Street.

Following investigations, it was concluded that the Bolt was in autonomous mode at the time of the accident and was attempting to change lanes. Once the car realized that the gap to change lanes was shrinking, it started to make its way back to the original lane. Unexpectedly, a motorcyclist who was lane splitting at the time made contact with the side of the Bolt before falling down.

Fortunately, the Bolt was traveling at just 12 mph at the time of the collision while the 1996 Honda S90 was overtaking at 17 mph. The biker suffered a minor shoulder injury while the passenger side of the Bolt was left badly scratched.

Unlike some other incidents involving autonomous vehicles, the Bolt actually wasn’t blamed for the crash. Instead, police determined that the motorcyclist was at fault for attempting to overtake the Chevrolet in an unsafe way.

“At Cruise, we test our self-driving cars in challenging and unpredictable environments precisely because by doing so we will get better, safer AV technology on the roads sooner,” a General Motors spokesperson said.

Wards Names Its Ten Best Engines Of 2018 15

Wards Auto has released its annual list of the 10 Best Engines for 2018.

After spending two months testing 32 different powertrains, the company’s editors selected the winners. Surprisingly, the winners were primarily from mainstream brands and the publication notes not a single German automaker made the list.

Ford came away with two wins as editors loved the twin-turbo 2.7-liter V6 in the F-150 as well as the 5.0-liter V8 engine that resides in the Mustang GT. Other winners include the turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder in the Honda Civic Type R and the twin-turbo 3.0-liter V6 that powers the Infiniti Q50. Jaguar and Kia also appeared on the top 10 list for the first time thanks to the turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder in the XF and the turbocharged 3.3-liter V6 in the Stinger.

Alternative powertrains had a strong showing as well as Wards honored the Chevrolet Bolt, Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid, Honda Clarity, and Toyota Camry Hybrid. These models are a very diverse group as the cars have electric, plug-in hybrid, fuel-cell, and hybrid powertrains.

Performance models were largely absent from the list even though contenders included the Audi RS3 and S4. The sole diesel engine, the turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder in the Chevrolet Equinox, also failed to make the cut.

Chevrolet’s Bolt-Based Electric Crossover Revealed, Arrives By 2020 16

General Motors CEO Mary Barra participated in the Barclays 2017 Global Automotive Conference in New York earlier today and she used her presentation to reveal a new Chevrolet Bolt-based crossover.

Drawing inspiration from the Chevrolet FNR-X concept that debuted at the Shanghai Auto Show earlier this year, the crossover has an aggressive front fascia with slender headlights that feature boomerang-shaped LED daytime running lights.

The model also has dynamic bodywork, plastic body cladding, and a Bolt-like C-pillar. As part of the transition from concept to production, the styling has been toned down and the model has been equipped with traditional mirrors and door handles.

The model will ride on the same platform that underpins the Chevrolet Bolt and it is one of two electric crossovers that is slated to arrive by 2020. The model’s powertrain will likely carryover from the Bolt so we can expect it will have a 60 kWh lithium-ion battery that powers an electric motor that develops 200 hp (150 kW) and 266 lb-ft (360 Nm) of torque.

Despite the rugged styling cues, the crossover will likely be offered exclusively with front-wheel drive.
