Chevrolet Aveo/Sonic Fails Latin NCAP Tests Despite The Addition Of Airbags 15

Latin NCAP continue to express their concerns with vehicles sold at South American markets after the Chevrolet Aveo became the latest in a string of cars to fail their tests.

Otherwise known as Chevrolet Sonic north of the border, the Aveo is one of the best selling cars in Mexico, and it scored zero stars in Latin NCAP’s latest crash test session, despite being equipped with 2 standard front airbags, unlike the model tested in 2015.

In the frontal impact test, the subcompact car “recorded poor protection to the chest of the driver, even with airbags”, Latin NCAP notes, adding that “the structural performance was rated as unstable, which explains also the movement of the steering column and pedals, increasing the risk of injuries to the driver”.

The Aveo’s side impact protection was rated as ‘adequate’ to ‘good’, thanks to “good energy absorption features”, whereas the child occupant protection “showed improvements” from the model tested two years ago.

“Latin NCAP showed, once again, that just adding airbags will not make a car safe when the structure is unstable”, said the organization’s Secretary General Alejandro Furas. “We call for GM to bring the same safety levels offered as standard by them in other markets to Latin America very soon.”

The safety specialists also tested the Nissan Kicks during their latest session, which failed to achieve the maximum 5-star safety rating. The subcompact SUV, which will launch in the USA next spring, scored 4 stars for both adult occupant and child occupant protection, after it “showed an unstable structural and footwell area performance in the frontal crash test”.

Finally, the Nissan Murano was subjected to the frontal and pole side impact tests as well and was awarded with a 5-star safety rating.

Toyota Says Lack Of AWD Is Hurting C-HR Sales 8
Dec
Posted by Michael Gauthier in nissan, Nissan Kicks, Reports, TOYOTA, Toyota C-HR, USA on 12 8th, 2017

The Toyota C-HR went on sale in the United States earlier this year and it appears the model hasn’t been quite as successful as the company was hoping.

Carsalesbase shows Toyota only sold 21,889 units since April and that’s significantly less than rivals such as the Chevrolet Trax and Honda HR-V. Toyota’s well aware of the situation as the company’s North American executive vice president of sales, Bob Carter, recently told Wards Auto the lack of an optional all-wheel drive system is “hurting its sales potential.”

The C-HR is one of the few crossovers that doesn’t offer all-wheel drive and it will soon by joined by the Nissan Kicks. Nissan North America’s vice president of product planning, Michael Bunce, doesn’t think the Kicks will suffer the same sales problem as the C-HR as he expects the model will be popular in cities on both the east and west coast. As a result, the company expects to sell at least 50,000-60,000 Kicks annually.

Bunce went on to say the C-HR probably isn’t doing as well as it could because it’s expensive for its segment. As he noted, “In the U.S. there’s still a great correlation between size and price point” and the C-HR starts at $22,500 which is “relatively high.”

The product planner went on to say the Kicks will cost less than $19,000 and customers who need all-wheel drive can always move up to the Rogue Sport which starts at $21,420 and offer an optional all-wheel drive system for an additional $1,350.

Nissan Kicks Has Its Work Cut Out In Subcompact Segment 30

Opting to throw something a little more “conventional” at the likes of the Honda HR-V and the Toyota C-HR, sounds like a wise business decision for Nissan.

Of course, very few modern-day subcompact crossovers actually look conventional. Yet, unlike the Juke, the brand new Kicks is a lot easier to digest visually.

Look close and you’ll spot a little Rogue in it, perhaps some Micra characteristics as well. Then again, since this is more of a youth-driven segment, we can’t help but notice how rivals like the previously-mentioned HR-V, C-HR, but also the Mazda CX-3, look more aggressive.

Furthermore, the Juke, which is what the Kicks replaces, might have had a controversial styling, but it did have character, something that can’t be said about Nissan’s new model, which shouts from afar its connection to emerging markets (it’s the result of the collaboration of Nissan’s U.S. and Brazilian studios).

All Kicks versions will be powered by a 1.6-liter four-cylinder petrol engine, pushing down 125 HP and 115 lb-ft (156 Nm) of torque – not quite as much muscle as some of its rivals.

Behind the wheel, future owners should feel both safe and entertained. The 2018 Kicks comes with Automatic Emergency Braking as standard, while higher trims get Blind Spot Monitoring and Rear Cross Traffic Alert. As for media content, the Kicks gets a 7″ infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility.

Nissan Kicks Juke Out Of The Range At The LA Auto Show 29

Nissan has pulled the covers off the 2018 Kicks, the company’s new subcompact SUV which first made its appearance in Latin America last year.

The new Nissan Kicks replaces the Juke in one of the fastest-growing segments in the market, becoming along the way the sixth member of the company’s growing SUV family.

Gone is the divisive styling then, with Nissan opting for a more acceptable design, mixing elements from models like the Rogue and the Micra supermini that’s available in other markets.

“As the gateway to Nissan’s adventure-ready sport-utility portfolio – joining Rogue Sport, Rogue, Murano, Pathfinder and Armada – Kicks is designed to fit the needs of singles or couples looking for expressive styling, personal technology, smart functionality and advanced safety features at an affordable price starting well under $19,000,” said Dan Mohnke, senior VP of Sales & Marketing and Operations, Nissan North America.

All models will be powered by a 1.6-liter four-cylinder petrol unit, rated at 125hp and 115lb-ft of torque. Paired to it will be the company’s proven Xtronic CVT transmission, with Nissan expecting a combined fuel economy rating of 33mpg. No all-wheel drive though, as all versions will drive their front wheels exclusively.

Customers will be given the option of seven exterior colors, along with five two-tone combinations. Two-tone combos include a black roof and contrasting body colors (white, orange or red), an orange roof with a gray body or a white roof with a blue body.

The cabin promises to offer “ample passenger space in the rear” as well as one of the largest load areas in its class. A 7.0-inch infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Nissan’s Intelligent Around View Monitor as well as an optional Bose premium sound system are also present.

All Kicks models will also come with Automatic Emergency Braking as standard, while the SV and SR trim levels will add Blind Spot Monitoring and Rear Cross Traffic Alert.

“Pricing for the 2018 Nissan Kicks will be announced closer to its on-sale date in spring 2018, but we are expecting to be among the most competitive in the segment,” said Mohnke. “Kicks’ unique combination of expressive design, excellent fuel economy, intelligent technology and advanced safety features adds up to one thing – exceptional value.”

Nissan Teases New Crossover For LA Show, Is It The US-Spec Kicks? 28
Nov
Posted by Michael Gauthier in LA Auto Show, nissan, Nissan Kicks on 11 28th, 2017

Nissan has released the first teaser image of a new crossover which will debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show on November 29th.

The image doesn’t reveal much but it appears to show a compact crossover with a short hood and a gently sloping roof. Little else is known about the model but the Los Angeles Auto Show previously revealed the crossover will be shown alongside an assortment of Star Wars inspired vehicles to promote the upcoming film Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

Nissan is keeping details under wraps but it’s worth mentioning the outline of the crossover bears a striking resemblance to the Kicks that was unveiled last year. The crossover was launched in Latin America and Carlos Ghosn, the CEO of the Renault–Nissan–Mitsubishi Alliance, said the model would be available globally.

Nissan North America’s Vice President of Product Planning, Michael Bunce, bolstered this idea last year as he said “Certainly we see the opportunity for more mainstream crossovers that are less niche, and we see Honda and others in that space and are taking it very seriously.” Bunce went on to suggest the Kicks would be positioned beneath the Juke and target the Chevrolet Trax and Honda HR-V.
