Mahindra To Launch Three More EVs In India By 2020 9
Dec
Posted by Michael Karkafiris in Electric Vehicles, India, Mahindra, Reports on 12 9th, 2017

Mahindra & Mahindra, the only carmaker that sells electric vehicles in India, announced that it will add three new EVs to its range until the end of the decade.

“We will have three new products (in the EV segment), which will be high performance ones,” Mahindra Electric Mobility CEO Mahesh Babu told the Times of India.

The three new EVs, which are expected to be SUVs, will offer a driving range of 350km (217 miles), 300km (186 miles) and 250km (155 miles) respectively, and the quickest of the bunch will be able to accelerate from 0 to 100km/h (62miles) in 8 seconds.

The news come after the Indian government’s announcement that the country will sell only electric vehicles by 2030. “India surprisingly took a very bold step declaring what would happen by 2030… that changed the scenario in the last six months,” Babu said, pointing out that the main challenge is creating a proper charging infrastructure.

Moreover, the Indian carmaker says that, by 2020, batteries will be significantly cheaper than today, enabling them to offer their electric vehicles in more affordable prices, which is very important in a market as price-sensitive as India.

Mahindra is currently selling four electric vehicles in India, including the e2o small city car, the eVerito compact sedan, the eSupro Van and the eAlfa rickshaw.

Uber Teams Up With Mahindra To Test EVs In India 25

Posted by Michael Karkafiris in Electric Vehicles, India, Mahindra, Reports, Uber on 11 25th, 2017

Uber announced their new partnership with Mahindra to pilot electric vehicles on its platform in India. The plan is for Uber to deploy hundreds of electric vehicles on the streets of Delhi and Hyderabad by the March of 2018, with the option of expanding the pilot program to other cities.

“For how long this pilot will go on is difficult to predict. It will require adequate progress in engagement with our stakeholders before we plan to expand to other cities,” Madhu Kannan, Uber’s chief business officer for India, told Reuters.

With this move, Uber becomes the second company launching an EV pilot program in the country, following local rival Ola which has already launched its own program in Nagpur and plans to expand it on a large scale by next year.

As part of the deal, Uber will subsidize the cost of an electric vehicle for its drivers and Mahindra will also provide finance, insurance and maintenance. The two companies will also work with third parties to set up a charging infrastructure for the cars in Hyderabad.

Mahindra recently said that they plan to invest 6 billion rupees ($93 million) over the next three years for the development of electric models. The company is currently working on two passenger cars, including one with Ssangyong, which is owned by the Indian manufacturer.

India’s Mahindra Launches New U.S. Factory In Detroit, Production Starts In 2018 23

Indian car maker Mahindra has officially opened its new North American HQ and manufacturing facility in Auburn Hills, the first new OEM plant in the Detroit area in 25 years.

The new factory will be used to produce Mahindra’s upcoming new SUV, called the Roxor. The Indian company will reveal the new model towards the end of the year. The brand is known for rugged SUVs such as the Willys Jeep-esque Thar seen in the video below.

Mahindra expects its new US factory to churn out 12,000 Roxor SUVs per year. The car maker was recently announced as one of the five manufacturers selected by USPS (United States Postal Service) to produce prototype delivery trucks for testing and evaluation as well.

According to reports from the Indian press, the new Roxor will be based on a modified platform of the Thar model, an off-roader that looks a lot like the classic Jeep Wrangler, and will be powered by Ssangyong’s 1.6-liter engine as used in the Tivoli small SUV.

The company didn’t give a timetable for when they will start selling passenger cars in the U.S. but Anand Mahindra, executive chairman of Mahindra Group said that their options include the introduction of the Ssangyong brand to the US public first.

“We have stated on record that amongst the options open to us are to come in with SsangYong Motors, which is our Korean subsidiary,” said Mahindra to AutoNews. “As you know it’s the third Korean auto company that Americans don’t know about.”

“So that could be a very logical step for us to introduce that brand here but that’s a decision that will be taken by the SsangYong Motors board”, he added.

The new manufacturing facilities are part of a $230 million investment that also includes a new warehouse, a logistics operation in Pontiac and an existing prototype operation in Troy. By 2020, Mahindra expects to have created 650 jobs and add another $600 million in local investment.

“This is an exciting day for Mahindra, our terrific employees and Detroit. I couldn’t be prouder to be here to help open this new facility today,” said Anand Mahindra. “This building opening represents our company’s growing presence in North America and locally in the Metro Detroit area where we have tripled our workforce during the past 18 months. We are committed to growing the Mahindra brand in North America and Michigan.”

Indian Firm Creates Mahindra-Based Jeep Wrangler Replica 13

This Jeep Wrangler looks just like any other. In fact, if you asked almost anyone what vehicle it is, they too would say it’s a Jeep. However, it’s not.

What we are instead looking at is a Jeep Wrangler replica built by an Indian company called Jeep Studio.

The vehicle started life out as a Mahindra Thar, an off-roader which already looks very similar to the outgoing Wrangler. However, to make the thing appear more genuine, Jeep Studio spent four months converting it with all-new body panels.

Indian Autos Blog reports that the Thar’s new body panels have been complemented by LED headlights and taillights, wing mirrors from a Wrangler, hood latches, reinforced tailgate, toughened glass, 33-inch Maxxis tires, black wheels, and matte black paint.

Imitation really is the sincerest form of flattery.

Mahindra To Build First New Factory In Detroit In Over 25 Years 5

Posted by Michael Karkafiris in India, Mahindra, Reports on 11 5th, 2017

India’s Mahindra & Mahindra said that it’ll build a new 400,000-square-foot assembly plant near Detroit, with the car maker having scheduled a press conference in Auburn Hills, Michigan for November 20.

The new assembly facility will be the first new factory in the region in more than 25 years, with Mahindra planning to build off-road utility vehicles, according to AutoNews.

The Indian automaker has been trying to enter the U.S. market for over a decade but previous efforts were unsuccessful and even ended in a litigation back in 2012.

At the time, dealers sued Mahindra, accusing them of pocketing “more than $9.5 million, more than a $100 million worth of dealer trade secrets to utilize for their future entrance into the U.S. market, and a strong market foundation gained at the expense of the dealers’ ‘free’ promotion of Mahindra’s brand name around the U.S.”

Mahindra denied all accusations, putting the blame on its former U.S. distributor, Global Vehicles U.S.A. of Atlanta.

There’s no indication of when production in the new factory will start but all we have to do is wait until November 20 for all the details.
