MINI Makes Clubman Cooper S A ‘Masterpiece’ Down Under 23

Special editions are two-a-penny these days, with practically every automaker offering at least one and, oftentimes, more in an effort to make their products more attractive – and, of course, charge their customers a little extra for the ‘privilege’.

MINI, for example, just launched a limited edition of the Clubman Cooper S that’s aimed exclusively at the Australian market and is named, quite boldly, the Masterpiece (yes, really…). Said version comes in just 30 examples, and can be found in certain dealerships across the country with a price tag of AUD $55,210 (USD $42,315).

The Clubman Cooper S Masterpiece Edition features a bunch of equipment from the MINI Yours catalog, including the exclusive White Silver exterior color, contrasting black accents, hood stripes, 18-inch alloy wheels finished in Dark Spectre Grey and ‘Masterpiece Edition’ badges.

MINI claims that the interior “captures your attention with its mix of premium materials and key technologies”, highlighting the individually numbered plaque, leather upholstery and anthracite headliner. It also gets a sports steering wheel, heated front seats, a panoramic sunroof, a head-up display and an 8.8-inch infotainment system as standard.

Like the plain vanilla Clubman Cooper S, this limited edition is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder, which delivers 189PS (186hp) and 280Nm (207lb-ft) of torque that allow it to sprint from 0 to 100km/h (62mph) in 7.1sec. According to the automaker, average fuel consumption is just 5.9 l/100 km (39.9 US mpg / 48 UK mpg) and CO2 emissions stand at 138 g/km.

MINI Cars Getting New Simplified Logo In 2018 13

The BMW Group’s MINI brand has revealed a new logo, one which it says, combines “an awareness of traditional values” with “the spirit of future-oriented development”. The new MINI logo will be visible on the firm’s entire lineup from March 2018 onward.

The automaker hasn’t dramatically changed the design, as they took the current logo and simplified it, in a 2D version, with their name written in uppercase letters in the middle of a circle, flanked by restyled wings.

This combination dates back to the early years of the classic Mini, and combines brand’s traditional values with the modern era, which began in November 2000 under the BMW Group’s ownership, when the MINI as we have come to know it celebrated its public premiere.

Although the automaker doesn’t say it, there’s a very good chance that the minimalist logo marks a new beginning for the company, one where ‘electrification’ is the key word, and product expansion their main strategy.

As big of a deal as it may be for MINI, this isn’t the first time that they have shown their new logo, as it was actually revealed back in mid-2015, so it has taken them, in total, almost three years to finally apply it to their cars.

BMWs, Minis & Rolls-Royces Ensnared In Airbag Recall 16

BMW has issued a pair of recalls in the United States – neither of which is particularly large in the number of units affected, but the array of models they cover is staggering.

The larger of two stems from a problem with the seat-mounted side airbags, which may not deploy in the event of a crash. The campaign covers only 3,506 units from the 4 Series, 5 Series, and 6 Series – including the M4, M5, and M6 – as well as the X1, i3, and i8.

Included among them are various powertrain variants and bodystyles, all of them from the 2016 and 2017 model years. As if that’s not enough, the recall extends to other products made under the BMW Group umbrella, including the Mini Cooper, Cooper S, and Clubman, as well as the Rolls-Royce Dawn.

Only 1 percent of those models mentioned are estimated to have the faulty airbag inflators. For instance, while 1,531 examples of the X1 crossover are affected, only one four examples of the i8 are being recalled, along with 28 Dawns, and one single 535d sedan.

Along with the airbag recall, BMW has issued another for eight examples of the X5 xDrive40e plug-in hybrid crossover. The problem here stems from a loose electric ground cable, which could cause the transmission to shift unexpectedly to neutral.

Fixing the former problem will necessitate replacing the airbag modules, while the latter will require simply tightening the ground cable. Both recalls are slated to get underway February 6.
