1,400 Cars Destroyed In Massive Parking Garage Fire On New Year’s Eve 2

Approximately 1,400 vehicles were destroyed on New Year’s Eve when a massive parking garage caught on fire in the United Kingdom.

The fire occurred in a parking garage near the Echo Arena in Liverpool and The Guardian reports that only a handful of vehicles on the top level and corners of the building survived the inferno.

Merseyside fire chief Dan Stephens told the publication the fire apparently started in the engine compartment of Land Rover Discovery which was parked on the second level. The blaze quickly spread to adjacent vehicles and Stephens said the lack of sprinklers played a major role as they could have “suppressed the fire and might even have extinguished the fire.”

The massive blaze required a significant response and the publication reports the fire was battled by 12 fire engines, three aerial units, and 85 firefighters. Thankfully no one was killed in the blaze but three people were hurt. Two were treated for smoke inhalation, while another person injured her hand while trying to escape the fire.

The parking garage was packed by visitors attending the Liverpool International Horse Show which was eventually cancelled as a result of the blaze.

Which Land Rover Should Get The SVX Treatment Next? 2

The hardcore version of the Discovery, which was unveiled by Land Rover at Frankfurt this past September, wasn’t the first SVX model it’s done – and it won’t be the last.

The question is, which of the British sport-ute manufacturer’s products should be the next to get the SVX treatment? Well, here are a few ideas.

Rendering artist Nikita Aksyonov recently gave us a speculative preview of what the flagship Range Rover would look like in SVX spec, and has now followed up with more.

In the gallery below, you’ll see similar takes on the Defender, Freelander, Evoque, Evoque Convertible, and Velar, along with the aforementioned Range Rover as well, all done up with similar equipment to the Discovery SVX.

Now some of them seem more likely than others. The Velar? Maybe. The Evoque? Probably not. The Evoque Convertible? Even less so. The Freelander won’t happen since it’s already been phased out, replaced as it has by the new Discovery Sport, but the latter could make a good basis.

As for the Defender, well that’s already spawned an SVX version – or, more accurately, two: the first back in 2008 (which was 10 years ago now, if you can believe it), and those jacked-up, roped-off Defender 110 short-bed, double-cab pickups in Spectre that were crafted jointly by JLR Special Vehicle Operations and the company’s longtime off-road racing partner Bowler.

Making another one, then, would hardly seem like much of a stretch. As always, we’ll keep an eye for it, so you might want to watch this space.

Land Rover Discovery Commercial Will Haul Your Stuff To The Ends Of The Earth 19
Dec
Posted by Carscoops Staff in Land Rover, Land Rover Discovery on 12 19th, 2017

Have stuff you need to haul to some remote location? Land Rover is ready to help with the launch of the new Discovery Commercial.

The vehicle’s essentially the same as the passenger version of the latest Discovery, but ditches the second and third rows of seating to optimize cargo space.

With the third through seventh seats out of the way, the Discovery Commercial can swallow up to 65.5 cubic feet of cargo. The load space measures 5’5” long, 4’7” wide, and 3′ tall, with a tailgate opening of 3’3” by 2’5”.

You wouldn’t necessarily know it from looking at the outside, though, as the panels replacing the windows from the B-pillar back can still be overlaid with tinted glass to make it look like a regular Discovery. You might not realize it from the front seats, either, because that whole section is identical to the passenger version as well.

Buyers will be able to choose between 2.0 and 3.0-liter turbodiesel engines, with all-wheel drive and automatic transmission equipped as standard. Pricing in the UK starts at £48,695, but we wouldn’t hold our breath on getting one in the United States.

Startech Brings Land Rover Discovery’s Offset Number Plate Back To Symmetry 6

If you feel your OCD kicking in every time you lay eyes on the Land Rover Discovery’s rear end, Startech has just the right thing for you.

Of course, and in order for Startech’s solution to work, you’ll have to own a Land Rover Discovery as replacing parts on other people’s cars without asking them first is slightly illegal.

You can now fix the Discovery’s controversial rear offset number plate with Startech’s new tailgate insert which brings the plate back to its rightful place in the center.

The insert costs 809 euros ($954 in current exchange rates) and is even compatible with the factory-installed rearview camera. Startech calls it the “Discovery of Symmetry” and who can argue with that.

If you ever wanted to get yourself a new Land Rover Discovery but that awkward rear end put you off then consider it a problem solved.

SVX V8 Is The Ultimate Land Rover Discovery For Off-Roading And It’s Coming In 2018 29
Nov

Land Rover has introduced the Discovery SVX concept at the Los Angeles Auto Show.

Designed to preview a production model that will be launched next year, the Discovery SVX was created by Jaguar Land Rover Special Vehicle Operations to be the ultimate off-roader.

As a result, the model has been equipped with skid plates, recovery hooks, and an integrated rear winch. The model also features an LED light bar, modified bumpers, and 20-inch alloy wheels with Goodyear all-terrain tires.

Thankfully the changes are more than cosmetic as engineers installed an upgraded four-wheel drive system with locking center and rear differentials. The SVO team also added a bespoke air suspension, long-travel dampers, and revised knuckles. The company says these changes help to improve the Discovery’s approach, departure, and breakover angles.

Rounding out the off-road features are an optimized Terrain Response 2 system and a Hydraulic Active Roll Control system which helps to improve wheel articulation, body control, and off-road traction.

While the exterior changes are pretty dramatic, the cabin only sees minor revisions. These include a pistol-grip shifter and two-tone seats with Rush Orange accents and perforated “X” logos.

Last but not least, the Discovery SVX features a supercharged 5.0-liter V8 engine that produces 525 PS (386 kW) and 625 Nm (461 lb-ft) of torque.

Why Is Land Rover Testing This Pair Of Camouflaged SUVs At The ‘Ring? 19
Nov

These two Land Rover SUVs were spotted recently by one of our readers in a parking garage at the Nurburgring, both cars heavily camouflaged, which is always intriguing to see.

While it may seem like there isn’t much to go on, we can tell you that the Range Rover in these images is probably the new facelifted model, based on its leather upholstery and steering wheel.

We saw both those leather seat options on the 2018 Range Rover last month when the official press release came out. Why the automaker is still testing it and why it’s so well hidden, is hard to say.

Also, if you look closely at the wheels, you’ll see those are the large 22″ 5 split-spoke wheels, available only on the range-topping SVAutobiography Dynamic, which this could definitely be, although it still doesn’t explain the camouflage.

As for the other SUV, which is a Land Rover Discovery, it actually doesn’t look out of the ordinary at all. Its only discernible feature is the fact that it’s got roof rails, which doesn’t mean anything really. Nevertheless, going to all the trouble to put on the camo, and at the Nurburgring at that, does raises questions, but your guess is as good as ours, so feel free to chip in.

H/T to Chris

2018 Land Rover Discovery Gets More Tech And New Base Diesel Trim 9
Nov
Posted by Sergiu Tudose in Land Rover, Land Rover Discovery, new cars, prices, Tech on 11 9th, 2017

Land Rover are introducing new technology features, updated driver assistance systems, plus more powertrain and design options for the 2018 Discovery in the States.

Prices start from $52,090 for the entry-level SE model, which now gets Land Rover’s InControl Touch Pro sat-nav system with the larger 10″ touchscreen as standard – as does the entire range.

Digital connectivity has also been enhanced thanks to the introduction of 4G Wi-Fi, as you can now pair up to eight mobile devices on the move inside your 2018 Discovery.

Other tech-related updates are the 12.3″ Interactive Driver Display TFT instrument cluster as standard on HSE and HSE Luxury models, and the second-generation Head-Up Display, available as an option on the previously-mentioned versions.

In terms of styling, the 2018MY Discovery gains a new Bryon Blue colorway. Furthermore, while vehicles with Dynamic and Black Packs were previously limited to Corris Grey or Narvik Black contrast roofs, 2018 owners can now opt for a body-colored roof for either of these packs at no extra cost.

Moving on to powertrain options, while previously exclusive to HSE and HSE luxury models, the Td6 diesel unit is now also available on the entry-level SE. We’re talking about a 3.0-liter turbodiesel, with 254 HP and 443 lb-ft (600 Nm) of torque, paired to a ZF 8-speed automatic transmission.

As for the SUV’s advanced safety and convenience tech, 2018MY cars now feature the automaker’s Emergency Braking system with pedestrian detection as standard – previously available only as a standalone option. Meanwhile, systems such as the optional Advanced Tow Assist or the seven passenger seating options with Seat Fold carry over from the 2017 model year.
