Can The New Volvo XC40 Beat The Germans At Their Own Game? 6
Posted by Cristian Gnaticov in Film, reviews, video, VOLVO, Volvo Videos, Volvo XC40 on 01 6th, 2018

Volvo’s latest SUV is called the XC40 – and it’s their smallest one to date, after the XC90 and XC60, and potentially the biggest seller as it is more affordable.

Coming as a Scandinavian alternative to the well-established Audi Q3, BMW X1, and Mercedes-Benz GLA, it’s underpinned by the brand’s new CMA architecture, which was co-developed with Geely, the brand’s parent company, specifically for compact cars.

Depending on the market, consumers will be able to choose from several powertrain options, including the D4 diesel with 190hp, and the T5 gasoline that makes 247hp. More importantly, Volvo will make the new XC40 even more affordable with a new T4 option, and it appears that the range will be expanded further with plug-in hybrid and electric versions, although it’s unknown when they might arrive.

The XC40 is a nice place to sit in. You get comfortable seats at the front, an infotainment system that can take some time to get used to, and the same overall feel that you get in the larger XC60 and XC90. Space at the rear is quite good too, even with the optional sunroof that shaves some of the headroom, and there are plenty of storage spaces – even a waste bin.

However, not everything is great with the XC40, as there is some road and wind noise coming into the cabin, which is more than you’d expect from a Volvo, as Edmunds pointed out in their review.

But is this the only drawback, or are there some other things that consumers would need to know about? Let’s see what the publication’s senior writer had to say about it, after driving it on the roads of sunny Spain.

Volvo’s Solution To Turbo Lag Is Quite Simple, Yet Really Clever 12

Volvo claims they’ve found the cure to turbo lag with a new system called PowerPulse and apart from being brilliantly clever, it’s also a really simple solution too.

Every turbocharged car suffers from turbo lag, that delay you get when you open the throttle after depressing it and while having the engine spinning within its boost zone. For years manufacturers have played with a lot of setups and different configurations in order to minimize its effect.

The delay is sourced at the turbo wheel, which can’t respond instantly to the driver’s input, requiring time to return back to its full speed in order to continue sending compressed air into the engine.

The only real solution to this problem is to keep the turbocharger fully spinning even at off-throttle situations and Volvo has done exactly that with the PowerPulse technology as Jason Fenske of Engineering Explained, er, explains.

The system includes a compressor drawing air from the air filter to a pressurized two-liter air tank, which then chucks it into the exhaust manifold to keep the turbocharger spinning and basically eliminate turbo lag.

Volvo’s PowerPulse is available only in conjunction with their 2.0-liter diesel engine at the moment. Of course, and If you prefer petrol power, the Swedish company also offers the T8 plug-in hybrid powertrain which combines supercharging and turbocharging with an electric motor in order to make sure that you’ll never experience any delay to your throttle inputs.

2018 XC40 Might Just Become A Money-Printing Machine For Volvo 2
Posted by Michael Karkafiris in video, VOLVO, Volvo Videos, Volvo XC40 on 12 2nd, 2017

Volvo’s first compact SUV, the XC40, is being launched across the world and now is the time to find out if there’s any substance to its style.

The 2018 XC40 was designed from a clean sheet of paper and also the first vehicle to be based on Volvo’s new CMA modular architecture, which was developed for compact models.

Volvo also claims that, despite its compact dimensions, the XC40 offers plenty of room for a small family and a “radically new approach to storage inside the car”.

European models will initially be offered with two 2.0-liter engines and all-wheel drive: the 247hp T5 petrol and the 190hp D4 diesel, both of them paired to an eight-speed automatic gearbox. A smaller three-cylinder petrol, as well as plug-in hybrid and pure electric versions are expected to be added in the range later on.

Carwow have gotten their hands on Volvo’s compact SUV and deliver their first driving impressions in the following video.

2018 Volvo XC40 Doesn’t Try To Be Sporty And That’s Cool 24
Posted by Michael Karkafiris in reviews, video, VOLVO, Volvo Videos, Volvo XC40 on 11 24th, 2017

Volvo has begun launching the compact XC40 in Europe and as usual, the first driving impressions are in to let us know what it is like.

The new Swedish SUV will initially be offered in Europe with two 2.0-liter engine options and all-wheel drive: the 247hp T5 petrol and the 190hp D4 diesel, both of them paired to an eight-speed automatic gearbox.

The XC40 is also the first Volvo model to use the new CMA modular architecture which is destined for the smaller cars the company plans to launch. And just because this is a Volvo, the new small SUV is refreshingly proud in its practicality claims instead of pretending to be another “sporty” addition to the class.

The interior is said to offer a “radically new approach to storage inside the car” and plenty of room for a small family and comes with the now familiar portrait-style 9.0-inch infotainment system and the 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster known from the brand’s bigger models.

Future additions to the range will include a hybrid and an all-electric version but until then, Volvo is also planning to offer the XC40 under their fresh subscription service called Care by Volvo.

Can the XC40 bring some of the modern Volvo goodness against rivals like the Audi Q3 and the BMW X1? Autocar delivers its first driving impressions on the video linked below.

First Volvo XC40s Are Rolling Off The Assembly Line In Belgium 22
Posted by Carscoops Staff in Reports, video, VOLVO, Volvo Videos, Volvo XC40 on 11 22nd, 2017

Enamored of the new Volvo XC40? Can’t wait to get your hands on one? Well we have good news for you, sir or madame, because they’re started rolling off the production line.

Set for its US debut at the LA Auto Show just over a week from now, the XC40 is Volvo’s first small crossover, slotting in beneath the larger XC60 and XC90 and setting the stage for the new S40 sedan and V40 wagon to follow.

Volvo revealed the XC40 just a couple of months ago, and has already filled its books with over 13,000 orders. The first of those are now being fulfilled at the automaker’s plant in Ghent, Belgium, set to begin delivery to their eagerly awaiting customers early next year.

The Swedish automaker has been manufacturing in Ghent since 1965. The plant is charged with producing the V40, S60, V60, and (until recently) the first-generation XC60. The rest of the company’s models are built at its principal facility in the Torslanda district of Gothenburg, Sweden, or at one of two sites in China. Another plant is set to open later next year in South Carolina.

Can A 1995 Volvo 850 T5 Keep Up With A New 2017 Volvo V90 D5? 17
Posted by Sergiu Tudose in Classics, diesel, Drag-Racing, video, VOLVO, Volvo V90, Volvo Videos on 11 17th, 2017

Modern turbo-diesel engines can usually keep their grounds against older turbo petrol units, as long as the former are mated to fast-changing gearboxes and the car isn’t significantly heavier.

This drag race between a new Volvo V90 D5 and a 1995 Volvo 850 T5 yielded some very interesting results, especially since both cars can one-up each other in certain categories.

This straight line battle was orchestrated by Carwow’s Mat Watson, and features both standing as well as rolling starts. You’ll see that one benefits the V90, whereas the other helps the 850 unleash all of its grunt.

So how do they stack up in terms of performance? Well, the 2017 V90 D5 can get from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 7.2 seconds thanks to its 235 PS (231 HP) and 480 Nm (354 lb-ft) of torque. It’s worth noting that the V90 weighs a whooping 2 tonnes (4,400 lbs), whereas the old 850 is considerably lighter at 1,570 kg (3,461 lbs).

It’s also a bit less powerful with around 10 fewer horses, but overall, it does have a better power-to-weight ratio than the much-newer V90.

Watch Volvo’s Automatic Braking System Save A Kid’s Life 16

Driving a new vehicle that’s equipped with the latest safety assistance systems could make a difference between life and death not only for its occupants, but for distracted pedestrians, too.

What you’re about to watch is a good example of how far technology has evolved over these last few years, in a scenario that’s unfortunately too common – a bus drops off a few kids, and two of them start running across the road without checking for traffic first.

The second kid manages to spot the oncoming semi just in time, but it appears that it’s already too late for the first child. However, this Volvo truck is equipped with an automatic emergency braking (AEB) system, in addition to other safety features, so it automatically applies the brakes.

Thanks to the safety technology, likely combined with the driver’s quick reaction time, the semi appears as if it almost defied the laws of physics, as it came to a complete stop in no time, saving a precious life during the process. Hats off to Volvo and the driver!

How Does Volvo’s New V90 R Design With 330hp Polestar Pack Perform In The Real World? 11
Posted by Brad Anderson in video, VOLVO, Volvo V90, Volvo Videos on 11 11th, 2017

Designed to upset the German constabulary, the Volvo V90 is one of the most advanced station wagons on the market and, like so many of its rivals, is offered in an array of versions and models.

Jakub and Yuri from The Straight Pipes YouTube channel recently jumped behind the wheel of a particularly seductive V90 R-Design with the power-boosting Polestar Performance Optimization package to see what all the fuss is about.

The R-Design trim is unique from any standard V90 as it adds numerous styling and interior tweaks but doesn’t look to improve the vehicle’s performance, despite what the ‘R’ badge might suggest. In the U.S., the R-Design package can be grafted on to both the T5 and T6 all-wheel drive models and certainly looks the part.

What does improve performance is the optional Polestar package that increases output by 14hp on the 2.0-liter twin-charged four T6 that’s reviewed here, from 316hp to 330hp. This is combined with other changes to offer faster throttle, gear and engine response.

No matter what powertrain a customer selects, all V90 models come equipped with what Volvo believes is the most advanced standard safety package on the market. Some of these key standard features are Adaptive Cruise Control, Pilot Assist II, Distance Alert, Lane Keeping Aid, Driver Alert Control, Road Sign Information, Lane Departure Warning, Run-off Road Protection, and large animal detection.

Unlike the freely available crossover-ish, high-riding V90 Cross Country, the plain V90 is offered only as a custom-order vehicle in the U.S. Prices start from $49,950 for the 250hp, FWD T5 and from $55,950 for the 316hp, AWD T6 V90, both in R-Design specification.
