Land Rover’s Restoring This Long-Lost Series I Prototype 14

Land Rover is at a vital crossroads in its history. Not only is it celebrating its 70th anniversary this year, but its core model – the legendary Defender – has been discontinued ahead of the introduction of an completely new model.

Sounds like a good time to us to look back and reflect on how far it’s come, and that’s just what it’s doing with the restoration of this vital early prototype.

One of 48 pre-production prototypes and three displayed upon the vehicle’s debut at the 1948 Amsterdam Motor Show, this Series I model was lost for a long time, but has now been found.

The prototypical off-roader (if one could ever be called that) remained in use through the 1960s, after which it sat for 20 years in a field in Wales before being bought as a fixer-upper project… but that project was never completed. Not until it was discovered, oddly enough, just a few miles outside of Solihull – the same place where it was made seven decades prior, and where Land Rover still produces the Discovery and several Range Rover models.

With the historical records now retrieved, the team at Jaguar Land Rover Classic will now undertake its restoration, which as you can see will take some work. The process will include reworking the thicker aluminum bodywork, galvanized chassis, and removable rear tub that characterized those 48 pre-production prototypes, while preserving to the greatest extent possible the patina it has accrued over the decades.

The World’s Largest Speed Bump Isn’t A Problem For The Range Rover Evoque 16
Dec
Posted by Michael Karkafiris in Land Rover, Land Rover Videos, Range Rover Evoque, video on 12 16th, 2017

Despite being on the market since 2011, with a facelift for the 2016MY, the Evoque is still managing to attract lots of customers thanks to its good looks, modern features and premium feel.

However, with newer rivals arriving at the segment, Land Rover found a clever way of advertising the Evoque, Range Rover’s best-selling model.

What it did was organize a stunt that involved installing the “world’s biggest speed bump” on a British city road. Road users were rconfused by the massive obstacle, with some turning their cars around and others trying to drive over it with no success.

As traffic begins to pile up on both sides of the speed bump, a Range Rover Evoque suddenly appears and shows everyone just how capable it is on dealing with obstacles like this. The message the automaker wants to pass along is that, despite its not-so-rugged looks, the Evoque is nevertheless quite capable at handling most obstacles, even those an owner would never think to throw at it.

Startech Brings Land Rover Discovery’s Offset Number Plate Back To Symmetry 6

If you feel your OCD kicking in every time you lay eyes on the Land Rover Discovery’s rear end, Startech has just the right thing for you.

Of course, and in order for Startech’s solution to work, you’ll have to own a Land Rover Discovery as replacing parts on other people’s cars without asking them first is slightly illegal.

You can now fix the Discovery’s controversial rear offset number plate with Startech’s new tailgate insert which brings the plate back to its rightful place in the center.

The insert costs 809 euros ($954 in current exchange rates) and is even compatible with the factory-installed rearview camera. Startech calls it the “Discovery of Symmetry” and who can argue with that.

If you ever wanted to get yourself a new Land Rover Discovery but that awkward rear end put you off then consider it a problem solved.

Latest Land Rover Discovery Sport Review Dubs It A “Great All-Rounder” 5
Dec

While you won’t be doing any heavy offroading in your Land Rover Discovery Sport, know that this SUV can potentially handle just about anything you throw at it, while still ticking all the boxes for everyday use.

Or so says Carbuyer’s Ginny Buckley, who can’t seem to find a fault with the Discovery Sport, calling it a “great all-rounder” and a “fantastic motorway cruiser.”

In fact, this might be the most positive review we’ve ever seen on Land Rover’s newest best-selling model. However, there have been plenty of other voices stating that it doesn’t quite match its rivals in terms of quality.

Otherwise, the Discovery Sport is extremely capable, comfortable and practical too, despite only being about as long as a VW Golf Variant, as Buckley points out while discussing the SUV’s cabin space.

In the end, we’re dealing with an extremely competitive segment here, where buyers often choose cars based on personal preferences, not maximum luggage capacity or offroad prowess. In other words, the likes of the Mercedes-Benz GLC, BMW X3, Audi Q5, Volvo XC60 and all the others, are truly formidable foes.
