Mammoth CT scanner to analyze Car Wrecks 8

CT scan wrecked car

We know that if you have an internal problem with your body your doctor would recommend either an X-Ray or a CT scan. And now it seems the same technology will be used on crashed cars to help analyze and determine what caused them to crash.

Computed Tomography (CT scan to you and me) has long since helped many a human, and now the Fraunhofer Development Center would like to do the same for crashed cars.

The center is using the biggest CT scanner they can get their hands on to analyze the wrecks. Naturally, a standard, hospital-sized one will not cover an SUV…

Fraunhofer has said that the CT scan will provide analysts with an in-depth, 3D view of the wreckage without hamoering or disrupting anything. Thus leaving the wreckage in it’s ‘original’ state.

Analysts and researchers hope to gain insight as to how the individual components of the car react under the forces of a collision.

Are you also wondering what mammoth CT scanner the center plan on using?

Well, according to Fraunhofer, they are busy building  a giant scanner that will be used for cars as well as detecting damage to airplane wings and to scan the contents of shipping containers.

Very clever, Fraunhofer!

The process of scanning a car is a tad bit more complicate than scanning a human’s brain, however.

Firstly, the wrecked car will be hoisted onto a turntable. Then, as the turntable turns, two X-Ray detectors on both sides scan the wreck.

Then, a computer merges the multiple images generated into a whole, 3D CT scan.

This mammoth scanner has a resolution of 0.8mm although the designers hope to bring that down to 0.4mm.

If all goes to plan, the scans could (theoretically) allow the crash investigators to track where the weakening failure of specific parts of the car is. It will also be able to show them where forces were directed and how each separate part of the car’s structure reacted.

We are also betting that this CT scanner will make crash investigation TV shows on the Discovery channel way more interesting.

exploding truck

This might seem like a scene out of a Fast and Furious movie, or some kind of weird internet prank.

However, this video of a semi-truck losing control on a highway in Indianapolis, then going airborne and then subsequently exploding into a huge ball of flames, is the real deal.

Some other man and a passenger was driving peacefully (and, luckily for us, filming their drive) when suddenly the huge truck came rushing across the highway and crash-landed in a way that made it look like it was part of a movie!

Fortunately, the driver of the truck and his 7-year old son escaped the runaway truck before it went airborne and exploded and each only had a few minor scratches. They can thank their lucky stars!

Check out the video below and witness this unbelievable crash:

We have all seen the infamous breakdancing ‘human’ bear get down and dirty but never have we seen a real bear pull off stunt like this where a car takes it head-on on a highway while the bear gets another day to live. The interesting thing about the video below is the camera vehicle is overtaken at the last few seconds before making contact with the bear. Fortunately, no one appeared to be hurt while the bear does a little breakdance stunt before walking off. Talking about a quick change of fate for both the blue Suzuki and bear. Enjoy!

So by now you probably have already seen the famous photo of the very first 2014 Corvette Stingray to greet the rocky shoulder of an Arizona road. The photo, shared by a member of Digital Corvettes, was said to be an accident much worse than it initially appears.

Sources have alleged that the accident was a single car event where the inside tire caught the edge of pavement during a tight corner, thus causing the new Corvette Stingray to crash. It is apparent that the vehicle owned by General Motors but we are still unsure of who was driving at the time of the accident.

Video Shows Anthony Davidson’s Horrific Le Mans Crash 18

Another 24 Hours of Le Mans is in the record books, and Audi has returned to its utter domination of the sport. As the clock ran down on the final lap, four Audi e-tron Quattro LMP1 racers crossed the finish line in formation, grabbing all three podium spots and fourth place, too, just for good measure.

Early in the race, however, it looked like Toyota’s hybrid LMP1 cars would give the Audis a serious run for their money. The Toyotas posted the fastest segment time down the Mulsanne Straight, but they lacked one ingredient necessary to win at Le Mans: just a bit of luck. By the end of the first day, both Toyotas would be retired with crash-related damage.

Four hours into the race, a Toyota LMP1 driven by Anthony Davidson attempted to pass a Ferrari GTE car driven by Pierguiseppe Perazzini as the cars approached the Mulsanne Corner. Perazzini apparently didn’t see the LMP1 car closing, and turned into the Toyota as it passed: the two drivers made contact at high speed, and that was enough to upset the airflow over both cars.

Davidson and Perazzini both had huge impacts with the tire barrier, which was able to dissipate enough energy to prevent more serious injuries to the drivers. Both were able to climb from their wrecked cars, and subsequent medical attention revealed that Davidson had suffered two fractured vertebrae in his back. A full recovery for Davidson is expected in less than three months.

This crash marks the second such incident in two years, bringing into question the wisdom of allowing pro and amateur drivers, in cars capable of vastly different speeds, to compete side by side over 25 hours. Tradition is one thing, but safety should always take priority.

Earlier this past weekend, a horrific crash between a rare Ferrari 599 GTO and a taxi cab claimed three lives. The accident took place on an intersection where the Ferrari allegedly ran a traffic light with excessive speed crashing into a taxi cab full of passengers.

The unfortunate circumstances of this accident bring about a harsh reality of those who fail to obey the rules of the road. Just recently, a video of this incident taking place was posted online from the dashboard cam of some very lucky individuals crossing the same intersection.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families of the three individuals who died as a result of this dreadful crash. Please people, be safe out there.

Rowan Atkinson, comedian and car collector extraordinaire was released from hospital today with no serious injuries after losing control of his maroon McLaren F1 and crashing into a telephone pole, setting the car alight in the process.

Atkinson apparently walked away from the wreck and sat on the side of the road with another motorist, waiting for emergency services. He has hurt his shoulder but no long term injuries are expected.

The McLaren F1 is the pride of his enormous and secretive car collection, costing over 650 000 Great British Pounds more than a decade ago. He apparently bought it to celebrate the success of the international Mr Bean film.

The car is a bit of a TV star as well, having appeared on the BBC’s Top Gear numerous times over the years. Atkinson himself was recently a guest on Top Gear and defended the car to host Jeremy Clarkson, who has never liked the McLaren. Atkinson said you have to live with the car, he has done over 37 000 miles in the car, more than any other owner presumably.

Atkinson is no stranger to car accidents, he has crashed this car before (although it was minor) and has also crashed a rare 1954 Mercedes Gullwing, a car worth close to a million pounds depending on condition.

Atkinson is also a keen racing driver, and races his 1964 Ford Falcon. He is known to own a new Audi R8, and even a Honda Civic Hybrid for more mundane duties.

Video Round-Up: Insane Accidents From World Motorsport This Week 21

There have been some stunning incidents this week, ranging from the hilarious video of a Formula 1 marshall rolling under Luizzi’s car in Malaysia, to this horrifying footage of a race car completely clearing the concrete barrier at Brands Hatch, UK. We’ve got a second video of that horror smash, in which both drivers walked away, as well as a few you might have missed, including Jason Plato’s high speed bender in the British Touring Car Championships.

Let’s start with that second angle from Brands Hatch. The accident occurred at an amateur one-make Toyota MR2 race at the infamous Brands Hatch circuit in the UK. The event was not televised so this spectator captured the only footage of the incident. Cars 1 and 55 come together, and the black MR2 gets squeezed over the barrier and into the parking lot, while the red MR2 does a spectacular series of end-to-end rotations against the catch fence. There’s an awesome stop-frame in this footage as well.

The next video features Jason Plato, a presenter on Discovery Channel’s Fifth Gear and BTCC Champion. The track is ex-F1 circuit Donington Park, also in the UK. Plato gets a nudge from behind just after the race starts and goes off during a flat-out corner. The commentator says that cars never go off their, so its a long slippery ride to the barriers. Incredibly the team rebuild the car in just a few hours, and had it on the grid for the next race, which brought Plato to tears. He said “Forget F1, this is the best team in the world.” The big girl. Plato eventually placed 6th and earned some valuable points.

In Nascar this week we saw Restrictor Plate racing at Talladega, one of the highlights of the calendar. If you’ve ever watched Nascar you might know that it involves going left and crashing. And weird sponsorship. That aside, Talladega is a rare 2.5 mile super-speedway, which means the drivers can literally drive flat-out for all 188 laps. To slow them down, a plate is welded below the accelerator (can you imagine that in F1) which holds them at about 180mph. To gain a speed advantage, rival drivers “bumpdraft” – they literally touch bumpers to cancel air resistance for the trailing car. This is incredible motor racing, but also incredibly dangerous, can you imagine somebody nudges you a little too hard at 300kmh? Well it happens, and this is the result:

And finally, during Friday free practice at the Malaysian Grand Prix, an in-car camera caught a hilarious moment when track marshals were pushing Antonio Luizzi’s broken-down car off of the track. Luizzi was out of the car when the incident happened. We’re only laughing because the marshal involved got up straight away. Sorry about the lame dubbed music, I searched Youtube long and hard for original audio but no luck.

A couple recently traveling on snowy highway 401 in Canada had a close-call witnessing a miraculous semi accident where they almost ended up dead. The negligent semi-truck driver was cited with careless driving after he somehow managed the plow his truck head-on into the highway median. The couple traveling in the opposite direction had a dashcam rolling at the time of the accident capturing the moments that may have thought to be THE END of their life. Fortunately, no one was seriously injured and the Semi truck driver was able to walk away from the incident.

Be safe out there!

AT&T Releases ‘Don’t Text While Driving Documentary’ Video 29
Dec
Posted by Darryl in accident, Automotive, crash, featured, texting, texting while driving, video on 12 29th, 2010

“All because of a senseless text message”… those are the unfortunate words shared by the friends and family of ‘texting while driving’ car accident victims. Everyone has a choice in life and as we get older we tend to get wiser, thinking that we are making all of the right choices even when we are behind the wheel of a car.

Some things are completely out of our control and others rest in our ability to drive one to two tons worth of various metals, plastics, rubber and glass at speeds sometimes over 70 miles per hour. New automobiles are laced in new technologically advanced safety features, in hopes to lead us down a virtually worry-free highway. But there lies a problem. Drunk drivers, carless drivers, speeding drivers and texting drivers… There are many categories of drivers that cause accidents but one of the fastest growing issues remain to be texting while driving. In the exclusive AT&T ‘Don’t Text While Driving Documentary’ video below, a series of life-changing events take place all because of someone texting while driving. This message may seem strange to come from AT&T, one of the nation’s largest cellular phone service providers, but it is just one more step to help make our public more aware of the dangers of texting while driving.

Maybe it is time you put that cell phone down while behind the wheel of your car! What is more important, your life or that text message? Stay safe!

Video: Bumblebee Camaro Gets Into Real Accident On Set of Transformers 3 12

There are always mishaps on the set of any movie especially the blockbuster types that involve car stunts such as the upcoming Transformers 3 movie. Recently on the set of Transformers 3 in Washington, D.C., the Bumblebee Camaro smashes into a cop’s SUV due to the cop driving through the set on the way to a call as shown in the videos below.

The cop car seems to be in the wrong here and many are wondering why the cop had to go through the set during filming. Luckily no one was seriously hurt in the incident except the Bumblebee Camaro. The set personnel acted quickly to cover the wrecked Camaro probably to keep onlookers from capturing photos or maybe little kids from crying over the destruction of Bumblebee. I wonder how they are going to edit this one in the movie?
