Future Cars: Can A New Nissan Stagea Answer Our Skyline Wagon Prayers? 13

For many petrolheads, there’s nothing more enticing than a high-performance wagon. Sadly these days, the offerings are fairly limited unless you want something German and very expensive.

Nonetheless, one wagon that has always caught our attention is the Japanese-market Nissan Stagea. Produced between 1996 and 2007, it was a Skyline-based and -infused, turbocharged V6 powerhouse with immense cult status.

So what could a modern day Stagea look like? Let’s envisage further.

Muscular Design

This study adopts Nissan’s current styling philosophy incorporating a dominant V-shaped grille, wedge headlamps and sheetmetal surfacing inspired by the upcoming new Altima. The front fenders, hood and a-pillars are a deliberate ploy to visually link it with the current GT-R, somewhat appropriate since the two nameplates have shared mechanicals in the past.

Like the original Stagea, it has shorter than usual rear doors and long side glass. Lower door scollops flick down towards the rear wheels for that go-fast appearance; whilst the rear is finished off with a vertical tailgate, quad exhausts and boomerang-styled LED tail lights.

VR And Variable Compression Powerhouses

The 1st and 2nd generation (WC34 & M35) Stagea were offered with a range of Skyline-based powertrains, including the RB-series in 2.0, 2.5T and 2.6-litre Twin Turbo (260RS) guises. Later on, the M35 era employed VQ-series engines in 2.5, 2.5T, 3.0 and 3.5-litre formats.

Whilst those were good engines, today’s power game has moved on. Nissan’s 298 kW/399hp, 3.0-litre, twin-turbo V6 (VR30DDTT) would do just nicely here. Power would be sent to either the rear or all four wheels, via a 7-speed automatic transmission.

Oddly, the most interesting variant could come in the form of Infiniti’s latest Variable Compression-Ratio engine. Code-named KR20, this 2.0-litre turbocharged unit debuted in the 2019 QX50. It combines decent power with diesel-like efficiency, making for a potent entry-level option.

Rivals Of The Past And Present

Many of the Stagea’s past competitors have been put out to pasture due to the obsession with SUV’s, low sales and ever-tightening emissions standards. Mid-size wagons like Subaru’s Legacy GT-B, Toyota Caldina GT-T and Mitsubishi Legnum VR-4 were a hoot to drive and are dearly missed.

Today, the competition is rather varied and restrictive depending on where you live in the world. On the smaller side, a new Stagea would battle against VW’s Golf R wagon, Skoda Octavia vRS and Subaru Levorg. And if price weren’t an issue, you could add Audi’s RS4, Volvo V60 Polestar and AMG’s C63 wagon to the mix too.

Nevertheless, no matter what make, model, size and price scale you’re looking at, the more wagons there are, the more the world will be a better place. Hope you’re reading Nissan…

This Is What A Nissan Skyline R34 GT-R VSpec II Nür With 10km Looks Like 15

We don’t know if this makes us sad or happy; a virtually unused 2002 Nissan Skyline GT-R V-Spec II Nür is heading to an auction, giving us a great opportunity to see the iconic R34 in a brand-new state.

On the other hand, having the keys to one of the most sought-after performance icons on the planet and not driving it does makes us sad, especially since this is one of the last examples of its generation.

The 2002 Nissan Skyline GT-R VSpec II Nür is sort-of the last hurrah for the R34 generation, mixing the VSpec II goodness with an upgraded RB26 engine. Despite the engine’s specs remaining officially unchanged, at 276hp and 293lb-ft of torque, Nissan had installed bigger turbos with a slightly bigger boost pressure and a reinforced block, making the engine even more durable to future upgrades.

Other features include a speedometer that tops out at 300km/h (186mph) and an exclusive interior stitching along with the usual VSpec II goodies such as the stiffer suspension, the bigger brakes, the carbon fiber bonnet and the iridium interior trim pieces.

The car is described as unregistered and will be auctioned by BHauction at the Tokyo Auto Salon on January 12, 2018.

1000HP Nissan GT-R R34 Tries To Outsprint Arrows F1 Car 13

Formula One cars have long been the benchmark of both cornering and straight-line performance and for good reason; there’s simply nothing faster around a racetrack.

Not dissuaded by this fact, Australia’s Adelaide Motorsport Festival decided to see how a 1,000 hp Nissan Skyline GT-R R34 would go against a 1994 Arrows Formula One car in a series of three rolling drag races.

On paper, the two are quite evenly matched. As you’d imagine, the F1 car has a superior power-to-weight ratio as it delivers 620 hp from its V8 engine and weighs just 515 kg. By comparison, the R34 used in the test has 1000 hp on tap but weighs a rather hefty 1300 kg. However, unlike the F1 car, the GT-R is all-wheel drive, giving it far superior traction.

Which are you tipping to take the victory?

Nissan Launches Nismo Heritage Offering Spare Parts To Firm’s Icons 24

Posted by Brad Anderson in Classics, japan, Nismo, nissan, Nissan Skyline, Reports on 11 24th, 2017

Nissan has announced its new Nismo Heritage program, designed to ensure that the Japanese firm’s most famous models remain on the roads for as long as possible.

First uncovered back in April, the Nismo Heritage program is a joint project between Nissan, Nissan Motor Sports, Autech Japan, and a selection of suppliers. The program will see replacement parts produced, initially for the iconic R32-generation Skyline GT-R.

When sales of the parts commence on December 1, approximately 80 genuine parts will be available to R32 GT-R owners. Among these parts will be harnesses, hoses, emblems, and a selection of exterior components. In the near future, additional parts will be added to Nissan’s inventory and soon, both the R33 and R34 GT-R models will be included in Nismo Heritage.

If Nissan is unable to reproduce certain parts with original suppliers, Nismo will consider replacing these parts with substitute, rebuilt or overhauled products.
