Insane FWD VW Golf GTI Mk3 Runs 1/4 Mile In 8.53 Seconds 9

Remember when 10-second cars were exotics or heavily tuned Japanese models with all-wheel drive?

Well, things have changed, because this insanely-modified Volkswagen Golf GTI of the Mk3 generation, literally blew its front door off while running the quarter-mile in a blistering 8.53sec.

That’s faster than a Bugatti Veyron, but the time posted isn’t even close to what appears to be the 1/4 mile record for front-wheel drive cars, which was allegedly set by a Volkswagen Gol last year, in Brazil, after completing the run in 7.7 seconds, at 301km/h (187mph), or 19km/h (12mph) faster than this Golf GTI.

Nevertheless, an insane amount of work went into this old hot hatch and the owner was kind enough to pop the hood for a few brief seconds and talk about some of the upgrades.

These include a 2.5-liter five-cylinder engine, and plenty of effort put into the aerodynamic and weight distribution. New suspension was added too, along with better brakes, racing seats with six-point harness, and roll cage, in case things go bad.

This week on The Grand Tour: Jeremy gets inspired by Ken Block and wants to do one of those amazing videos, while Richard drives a small tank through a shopping mall, and James tests out a city car.

The action-filled trailer starts with Clarkson and an old Subaru Impreza WRX STI rally car, which is thrashed around an English farmland in an attempt to do some Ken Block-ing controlled drifts.

In a different continent, in UAE’s Dubai, Hammond sits inside a small tank, which he uses in a luxurious shopping center, before taking it on the Sheikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Boulevard, and on the sand dunes. This part of the show was filmed more than a year ago, and it was initially believed that Jezza was in the driver’s seat.

Meanwhile, May takes a trip to the Eboladrome test track to try out the Volkswagen Up! GTI, surrounded by flames and explosions, which he compares to “an 80s action movie”.

We also see the facelifted Volkswagen Golf GTI going against its iconic predecessor, the Mk1 Golf GTI.

Back in the studio tent, Richard Hammond and James May reveal some behind-the-scenes footage that’s described as “embarrassing”, whereas the Celebrity Face Off shows English comedian, musician, TV and radio presenter Bill Bailey, and English actor Dominic Edward Cooper, in an attempt to find “the world’s fastest person with a failed early career in a band”.

Facelifted VW Golf GTI TCR 345HP Racer Ready For The 2018 Season 1

The Volkswagen Golf GTI TCR paid a visit to the plastic surgeon, where it received a new front end that resembles that of the facelifted road-legal model.

Presented at the 2017 Essen Motor Show in Germany, where it will be on display until December 10, the racer is ready for the 2018 season., with improved downforce and cooling, and less drag.

Mechanically, the 2019 Volkswagen Golf GTI TCR remains unchanged. This means that beneath that 40cm (16in) wider body than the production model lies the Group’s MQB platform, and a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbocharged engine that’s shared with the Golf R.

The unit makes 350PS (345hp) and 420Nm (310lb-ft) of torque, and allows this track-only Golf GTI to sprint from rest to 100km/h (62mph) in 5.2 seconds.

Expected to carry a price tag of €90,000, which equals to $106,852 at today’s exchange rates, the updated racer wants to continue the success of its predecessor, which won the TCR Class in the VLN Endurance Championship on the Nurburgring Nordschleife, and proved itself several times in the TCR International Series.

“The new look for the Golf GTI TCR resulted from close cooperation with Volkswagen Design. This helps us to underline just what a close relationship exists between the production model and the racing version“, said VW’s Motorsport Director, Sven Smeets. “For example, the engine comes directly from series production, and only requires minimal adjustment for competitive racing. This is proof that the Golf GTI provides the perfect foundation for our customer racing cars.”

The VW Golf MK2 GTI Is Still Everything You Like In A Hot Hatch 25

The original gave its name to a whole segment, but for many people it was the second generation that really cemented the legend of the Golf GTI.

Combining the everyday usability with a proper enthusiastic character on the road, the MK2 GTI was an irresistible car at the time, paving the way for the numerous hot hatches that followed.

It took Andrew Tucker three years of searching to find an original, unmodified Golf GTI, after the first one he owned fell victim to fire. His connection with the GTI goes a long way back, when his father used to drive him in his GTI.

“It harkens back to my childhood, but it’s also a very usable car,” Tucker told Petrolicious. “It’s not perfect, but it’s perfectly usable, and I think that’s what I love about these cars most of all.”

His determination to keep his 16-valve GTI as original as possible shows the amount of respect he has for this special hatchback. “The car is completely original minus the suspension rebuild: original interior, original 15-inch BBS RA alloys, still running the original clutch, engine, and gearbox,” Tucker adds. “Part of the beauty of this car is that it’s been preserved, not modified”.

VW Group Planning A Host Of Hybrid Hot Hatches 3

Aware that it will take many years for all-electric vehicles to become commonplace, the Volkswagen Group intends on launching a selection of hybrid hot hatches early next decade as it continues its introduction of electrified models.

It is reported that senior executives at the automaker believe these hybrid hatchbacks will prove to be a valuable stepping stone towards full electrification and help to win over car enthusiasts about the benefits of electric propulsion.

Speaking to Autocar, an unnamed source said it is important to move step by step into the EV future.

“We are not just flicking a switch and expecting people to move to fully electric cars – it is a process that will take decades, and we must help take people through the transition step by step by showing what the possibilities are.”

It seems likely that one of the first hot hatches within the VW Group to receive hybrid power could be the next-generation Skoda Fabia vRS. Despite being a number of years away from being introduced, Skoda chief executive Bernhard Maier said it would make sense to electrify the model.

At the start of this year, it emerged that the next-generation Volkswagen Golf GTI could also use a hybrid powertrain. If current rumors hold true, that would mean a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine complemented by a 48V electrical system and integrated starter motor.
