Scoop: A New Mercedes-Benz GLS Is Coming To Rival The BMW X7 11

The next-generation Mercedes GLS has been spied undergoing cold weather testing in Sweden.

Dressed in heavy camouflage, the redesigned crossover doesn’t reveal much but the photos show the GLS will have a massive grille and LED headlights. Additional styling details are hard to make out but it appears the model will have more curvaceous bodywork and pronounced fender flares.

The model’s relatively flat roof carries over but this isn’t a bad thing as it should provide plenty of headroom, especially for third-row passengers.

Speaking of the interior, we can expect major changes as the GLS will undoubtedly adopt higher quality materials and modern technology. Nothing is official but we wouldn’t be surprised if the crossover can be equipped with two 12.3-inch displays and an assortment of advanced driver assistance features.

Little else is known about the model but it will reportedly ride on the MHA platform which will also be used on the new GLE. The platform should enable the GLS to be significantly lighter than its predecessor and this is a good thing as the GLS 450 has a curb weight of 5,335 lbs (2,419 kg).

Engine options remain unconfirmed but the GLS will likely be offered with six- and eight-cylinder options. A plug-in hybrid variant is also likely and we can expect to see a high-performance AMG model with a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8.

The redesigned Mercedes GLS is expected to debut in 2019 and it will have some pretty big shoes to fill as Carsalesbase data shows the current model recently celebrated its fourth consecutive year of growing sales. However, it could be challenging to keep that momentum going as the crossover will face stiff competition from the all-new BMW X7.

Mercedes-Benz has issued four recall campaigns in the United States all at once, covering a wide array of vehicles for issues ranging from door locks to headlights.

The largest among them covers an estimated 8,700 vehicles from the GLE, GLS, and S-Class ranges – including AMG models and even the Maybach S600 – all 2017 and 2018 models.

They’re being recalled for a problem with the latches on their left-rear passenger doors, which may not lock properly. Each will have to be inspected by a local technician and potentially have those lock mechanisms replaced.

The next largest recall affects 8,134 examples of the GLC, which simply need to have their headlights checked and possibly readjusted. Another 432 examples of the G550 (including the 4×4²) whose power brakes may not be working properly. Finally ten examples of the AMG GT equipped with the optional AMG Performance Seats will need to either have software for their passenger airbags updated or the passenger seat cushion replaced.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, all four campaigns will kick off this month, though the parts for the G-Class and AMG GT are expected to take another month or two to arrive before they can be fitted.

New Mercedes-Benz GLS Is Hard To Miss On The Road 11

Claiming that the current GLS is the “S-Class of SUVs” is a bold statement, even for Mercedes-Benz, but there’s a good chance its successor will be worthy of the description.

Spied in motion for the first time, the GLS replacement is currently in prototype form, but interestingly enough, unlike the one caught by our vigilant spy photographers, this one features a sunroof, and roof rails.

Other than that, it remains pretty much the same, from what we can tell from the camo and plastic cladding, but we do expect an entirely new design, similar to the upcoming GLE, with that beautiful Panamericana grille used in the range-topping AMG model(s).

Poised to go against the upcoming BMW X7 as well as the Range Rover, the next generation Mercedes-Benz GLS still has a few major problems to deal with: rivaling the Range Rover SVAutobiography and Bentley Bentayga.

However, it appears that an even more luxurious version of the SUV is on the table, one that could see the ‘Benz’ suffix replaced by ‘Maybach’, but first things first, let’s wait for the ‘regular’ one to arrive in 2019.

Mercedes-Benz has completely transformed Maybach yet again.

From a stand-alone brand it revived in 1997 to compete with (VW's) Bentley and (BMW's) Rolls-Royce, Daimler has now turned Maybach into a high-end sub-brand, standing alongside AMG in transforming “ordinary” Benzes into even more desirable and expensive sets of wheels.
