2019 Mercedes-AMG CLS 53 Is The New Cool Kid On The Block 15
Jan

Mercedes-AMG taps into the electrified market for the first time with a new range of cars that wear the ’53’ moniker.

One of them is the CLS 53 4Matic+, a range-topping model of the third-gen CLS, which has a more aggressive exterior design, and sportier trim in the cabin.

The biggest change, however, lies beneath its pretty skin, where motivation comes from a 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged six-cylinder  engine, with a starter-alternator that feeds the 48-volt electrical system.

The combined output of 456hp and 567lb-ft (769Nm) of torque is channeled to all four corners through a 9-speed auto. Naught to 62mph (100km/h) takes only 4.5sec in the mild hybrid, and top speed is limited to 167mph (270km/h) with the optional AMG Driver’s package, or 155mph (250km/h) without it.

Deep-pocketed enthusiasts will get to order the new Mercedes-AMG CLS 53 4Matic+ in the coming months, when they will likely spend close to $100,000 in the US of A, given that the old model, which can still be had here, starts from $75,150.

Until the top-of-the-line CLS goes on sale, though, it can be viewed live at the 2018 Detroit Auto Show, where it will remain until January 28. It can also be seen on video, as it celebrates its dynamic debut in the first commercial.

The new Mercedes-AMG CLS 53 4Matic+ is about to be unveiled at the 2018 Detroit Auto Show, but until then, we get to catch a glimpse of it in an official film.

Building upon the third generation of the car, it gets a more aggressive design over the lesser versions, such as the AMG badges all around, tweaked bumpers on both ends, boot lid spoiler, and a quad exhaust system, alongside a few sportier touches made to the cabin.

Mercedes-AMG continues to keep the CLS 53’s specs close to its chest, but it’s believed to come with a plug-in hybrid powertrain that combines a 3.0-liter straight-six engine with an electric motor and a lithium-ion battery pack, developing up to 430hp. Moreover, the ‘4Matic+’ moniker reveals that it gets the company’s all-wheel drive system, probably similar to the one of the new E63 models.

In this form, the automaker states that it returns 28 US mpg (33.6 UK mpg / 8.4 l/100 km) on average, and emits 200 g/km of CO2.

Moreover, the new Mercedes-AMG CLS 53 won’t slot between the 43 and 63 variants as it was initially expected, as the latter will be kept away from the third-gen car to make room for the AMG GT 4, so what we’re looking at here is the new range-topping model.

2019 Mercedes-Benz G-Class Is An Icon Reborn 15
Jan
Posted by Michael Gauthier in Detroit-Auto-Show, featured, mercedes, Mercedes G-Class, Mercedes Videos, new cars, Top 5, video on 01 15th, 2018

The Mercedes G-Class has withstood the test of time and become an icon for the brand. The company is hoping to build on that success by introducing the all-new model at the North American International Auto Show.

Redesigning an icon isn’t easy but Mercedes seems to have pulled it as the 2019 G-Class manages to capture the spirit of the original. Starting up front, we can see a familiar grille which is flanked by circular headlights. The model also has an evolutionary hood as well as a new front bumper which is more rounded to help improve aerodynamics.

Moving further back, the G-Class retains its boxy styling and upright greenhouse. The model’s distinctive trim strips have also carried over and so has the spare tire carrier. Despite the familiar appearance, the redesigned model is 53 mm (2 inches) longer and 121 mm (4.7 inches) wider than its predecessor.

The styling changes continue in the cabin as drivers will find an all-new steering wheel, metallic accents, and wood or carbon fiber trim. The SUV comes with analogue gauges but customers can order a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster to match the 12.3-inch infotainment display. Elsewhere, there are heated seats, a seven-speaker audio system, and numerous new storage compartments.

A dizzying array of options will be available including a 16-speaker Burmester surround sound system, designo leather upholstery, and an Active Multicontour Seat package which adds front seats with heating, ventilation, and massage functions. If that’s not luxurious enough, the Exclusive Interior Plus package adds Nappa leather upholstery on the doors, dashboard, and center console.

Even without additional options, the 2019 G-Class is more comfortable than its predecessor as it features an assortment of changes to reduce noise, vibration, and harshness. The model’s increased dimensions also provide drivers and passengers with additional leg, shoulder, and elbow room. Rear seat passengers, in particular, receive an additional 5.9 inches (150 mm) of legroom.

At launch, the model will be offered with a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 engine that develops 416 hp (310 kW) and 450 lb-ft (609 Nm) of torque. It will be connected to a nine-speed automatic transmission which is obviously paired to a four-wheel drive system.

At SUV’s unveiling, Arnold Schwarzenegger asked Daimler CEO Dieter Zetsche about the possibly of a pure electric variant but he simply said “Stay tuned.”

Despite the focus on luxury and comfort, the all-new G-Class is even more capable off-road than its predecessor. In order to achieve this, the model rides on a ladder-type frame and has been equipped with three 100-percent differential locks. The biggest change is the addition of a new independent front suspension and front axle. The rear axle is also new and Mercedes says it helps the model stay on “track more robustly.”

Thanks to these changes, the G-Class has approach and departure angles of 31° and 30° as well as a maximum fording depth of 70 centimeters (27.5 inches). The SUV also boasts a 26° breakover angle and 241 mm (9.5 inches) of ground clearance between the axles.

Other off-road focused features include a new transfer case and an all-new G-Mode which changes the characteristics of the accelerator, steering system, and adjustable damping system to ensure maximum off-road capability.

Besides being more capable off-road, the G-Class has an AMG-tuned suspension and a curb weight that has been reduced by approximately 170 kg (374 lbs) thanks to use of lightweight materials such as aluminum.

The all-new G-Class will go on sale in the United States in late 2018 and pricing will be announced closer to launch. In Germany, the G-Class will be launched in June and be priced from €107,040.50 ($130,532).

Is The Mercedes-AMG A45 A Match For Audi’s RS3 Sedan? 13
Jan
Posted by Cristian Gnaticov in AMG, audi, audi rs3, Audi Videos, Drag-Racing, Film, mercedes, Mercedes A45 AMG, Mercedes AMG, Mercedes Videos, video on 01 13th, 2018

Two of the hottest compact cars on sale today, the Mercedes-AMG A45 and Audi RS3 Sedan, were taken to the track to settle their differences.

The setting is the Rock Raceway circuit in South Africa, with its 300m (984ft) long straight being more than enough to prove which of the two is faster.

Mercedes-AMG’s A45 hot hatch is slightly less powerful than its Audi rival. It has a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbocharged engine that delivers 381PS (376hp) and 475Nm (350lb-ft) of torque, taking 4.2sec to sprint from rest to 100km/h (62mph), and toping out at 250km/h (155mph).

On the other hand, the Audi RS3 Sedan makes use of a 2.5-liter five-cylinder rated at 400PS (394hp) and 480Nm (354lb-ft) of torque. Naught to 100km/h (62mph) takes 4.1sec, and top speed is electronically limited to 250km/h (155mph).

There’s another aspect worth mentioning, and that’s the A45’s weight advantage, but is this enough to make up for the power deficit compared to the RS3? Just click on the video below and find out.

Mercedes Unimog Will Take You To Places No Other Vehicle Can 13

When you think of a tough vehicle, you probably don’t think about the Unimog – which is a shame, really, because it has this incredible go-anywhere attitude and offers great reliability and ease of maintenance, if you know what you’re doing.

Mercedes originally designed it to be an alternative to tractors, offering the ability to be driven at higher speeds on roads than other agricultural machines.

The huge ground clearance, courtesy of its portal axles, combined with a selectable all-wheel drive and a frame that flexes as part of the suspension, made sure that the Unimog will almost take you and your gear anywhere, and that’s what made the Unimog so popular with farmers and armies around the globe.

This particular example is an army-surplus vehicle bought by the guys in Dirt Every Day, with the goal to drive it from Indiana to Memphis, Tennessee.

With the Unimog being able to cruise up to speeds of 50mph, it’s not the ideal road-trip vehicle, but the fun starts when the tarmac stops and that’s what this beast is all about.

New Mercedes MBUX Infotainment System Detailed At CES [63 Pics+Video] 10

The upcoming Mercedes A-Class will be the company’s first model to use the innovative MBUX infotainment system, which was presented at this year’s CES in Las Vegas.

UX stands for user experience, with Mercedes claiming that their new infotainment system has the ability to learn thanks to artificial intelligence. A-Class customers will be given the option of three different versions: the basic version with dual 7-inch displays, a mid-level system with one 7-inch and one 10.25-inch screen and a range-topping dual 10.25-inch display system, offering a resolution of up to 1920×720 pixels (200 dpi).

Everything is controlled either via touch or intelligent voice control, with the system utilizing a touchscreen, touch-control buttons on the steering wheel and a new touchpad on the center console with haptic feedback. Connectivity options include everything from Apple CarPlay to Google Android Auto and even Baidu CarLife for cars sold in China. There are two classic USB ports and one USB Type-C for faster charging.

Mercedes says that the voice control works with natural speech recognition and is activated by simply saying “Hey Mercedes”. The language assistant’s ability to identify indirect speech means that the user can say things like “I am cold” instead of the clear command “Temperature to 24 degrees” in order to operate the climate control.

“New technologies must focus on the people using them and make their life simpler. That’s why we combine intuitive and natural operation with intelligent and learning software in MBUX”, says Ola Källenius, Member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG responsible for Group Research and Mercedes-Benz Cars Development.

The new infotainment system will also debut the latest Mercedes me connected services which will offer services like sending a message when the parked vehicle is damaged or moved, a virtual key on the smartphone that works via NFC and geographical vehicle monitoring to notify the owner if the car is being driven on routes not permitted, among other.

As for the hardware, the new MBUX system packs 8GB of RAM memory, a six-core CPU and two different graphics chips from NVIDIA, depending on which version of the system you go for. Mercedes’ new MBUX infotainment uses the Linux operating system. Mercedes says that their new infotainment system will equip its compact model range, at least initially.

Watch A Mercedes E63 AMG Estate Race A Porsche 911 And Audi R8 6
Jan
Posted by Joel V. Patel in Audi R8, Audi Videos, Drag-Racing, Film, Mercedes E63 AMG, Mercedes Videos, Porsche Videos, Porsche-911, video on 01 6th, 2018

Last August, Doug DeMuro purchased a 2012 Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG for $44,000. The YouTuber claimed that the 520-horsepower (525 PS) wagon would become his daily driver and promised to do all sorts of fun things with the machine.

Well, he’s taken a break from reviewing cars, like the Tesla Model 3, which he called the coolest vehicle of 2017, to take his E63 AMG wagon to a drag strip.

DeMuro’s wagon was joined by an Audi R8 and a Porsche 911 at Atco Dragway in Atco, N.J. to see if the E63 AMG could keep up with them. While it certainly isn’t a sports car like the other two, the E63 AMG can get to 62 mph in 4.4 seconds, so it had more than a fighting chance against them.

On the other hand, the wagon may have more power than the R8 and the 911, but it’s heavier and compared to the R8’s all-wheel-drive layout and the 911’s rear-engine setup, is down on traction, as well. So, it wasn’t really surprising when (spoiler alert) the Merc lost a quarter-mile drag race against the R8. The times were pretty close though, with the E63 AMG wagon setting a time of 13.293 at 109.12 mph. The R8 was a little quicker, with 13.120 110.23 mph respectively.

DeMuro claimed that the Mercedes was in Eco Mode and in its comfort settings. The second time around, he chose the proper go-fast settings and things turned out better.

We won’t get into too much details, as that’s what the video’s for, so if you want to find out whether a super-estate can outrun bona-fide sports cars in a drag race, just click the play button.

Topless Mercedes SL Battles The Bomb Cyclone In Rhode Island 5
Jan
Posted by Michael Gauthier in Film, mercedes, Mercedes SL, Mercedes Videos, Offbeat News, video on 01 5th, 2018

The eastern coast of the United States is being hit by a “Bomb Cyclone” and it was brought extreme winter weather to a number of states in the region.

Cranston, Rhode Island is one of the areas that has been hit particularly hard so it’s surprising that one viewer of the local NBC affiliate filmed a Mercedes SL (R129) with its top down during the middle of the storm. The rear-wheel drive roadster obviously struggles on the snowy roads and we can see what appears to be smoke or steam billowing from underneath the hood a few seconds into the clip.

A number of commenters have been extremely critical of the driver’s decision to use the car in these conditions but a handful of other people have chimed in to claim they know the car’s owner. Several of these people said the SL’s roof is broken and this is the owner’s only vehicle.

While driving the SL probably isn’t the greatest or warmest decision, it appears the owner felt they had little choice but to use the car to go wherever they were heading.

Think You Can Snag This 2003 Mercedes G 500 For A Reasonable Price? 5
Jan
Posted by Sergiu Tudose in auction, Galleries, mercedes, Mercedes G-Class, Mercedes Videos, video on 01 5th, 2018

In case you didn’t already know, the Mercedes-Benz G-Class (yes, the one that’s just been replaced with an all-new model) is one of the world’s most expensive SUVs.

Buying a brand new one in the U.S. will set you back at least $123,600, which is the base price for the “entry-level” G 550 version – and that’s before you start ticking any boxes in the options’ list.

Now, if you don’t mind missing out on some of the latest Mercedes-Benz gadgets, opting to purchase an older model G-Class at an auction could turn out to be a smart move, and since the German brand has kept the styling practically intact for many years, it would take a trained eye to spot that it’s 14 years old.

For example, take a look at this 2003 model we found on Bring a Trailer. The seller has listed the car without reserve, and with four days still left, the highest bid is $17,000, a number that will obviously go up as the auction nears its end. After looking at a bunch of 2003-2006 G 500 models with more than 100,000 miles (160,000 km) on the clock on both Autotrader and eBay Motors, we found that a lot of them are priced somewhere between $35,000 and $40,000, so we wouldn’t be surprised if eventually it sells for a similar amount.

Finished in Silver Gray with a Gray leather interior, this G 500 has 133,800 miles (215,330 km) on the clock, and aside from the tinted windows, it’s being described as stock. Other features include the OEM split five-spoke alloys, power sunroof, dual-zone climate control, power seats, sat-nav and plenty more.

This example is powered by a naturally aspirated 5.0-liter V8 that’s good for 292 HP and 336 lb-ft (455 Nm) of torque. It’s certainly nowhere near as quick as a modern-day G 550, but, apart from the performance, you will still be getting the G-Wagen experience.

Finally, the seller was even nice enough to include a brief POV driving video, showing how the car behaves and sounds on the road.

Don’t Worry, The New 2019 Mercedes-Benz G-Class Is As Tough As It Looks 4
Jan
Posted by Cristian Gnaticov in Detroit-Auto-Show, mercedes, Mercedes G-Class, Mercedes Videos, new cars, video on 01 4th, 2018

Mercedes-Benz is highlighting the fact that the next-generation G-Class has undergone an extensive development program by setting it loose on an off-road course.

Located near Graz, Austria, on a 1,445m (4,741ft) high mountain, the 5.6km (3.5 miles) route goes through the forest and includes gradients of up to 60 percent, and lateral inclinations of up to 40 percent.

However, this didn’t turn out to be a challenge for the hairy-chested SUV, which uses a ladder-type frame, low-range gearbox, and three 100-percent differential locks. It also gets independent front suspension, 241mm (9.5in) of ground clearance, and plenty of other features that will help it cope with pretty much everything Mother Nature has to throw at it.

As modern as it may be, the 2019 Mercedes-Benz G-Class retains the same boxy design that made it famous. Inside, things will be completely different, as it gets not only plenty of leather and other high-end materials, but also the dual-screen layout that debuted on the new E-Class.

Mercedes-Benz will reveal the all-new SUV in just a little over the week, during the 2018 Detroit Auto Show, where it will mark its world premier, but you can get a first look at it through these leaked images
