New X2 And Updated i8 Coupe Spearhead BMW’s NAIAS Lineup 21
Dec

Two BMW models will celebrate their world premiere at the 2018 Detroit Auto Show between January 14-28, the updated i8 Coupe and the new X2 small crossover.

Aside from the two novelty acts, the Bavarian automaker will also show off their i8 Roadster First Edition, together with the BMW Concept X7 iPerformance.

The updated i8 Coupe brings with it a hybrid powertrain generating a total system output of 374 PS (368 HP), with the electric motor alone being good for 143 PS (140 HP), while also powering the vehicle all the way to 65 mph (105 km/h).

Customers can then push the eDrive button, which raises the all-electric top speed to 75 mph (120 km/h). In a straight line, the new i8 Coupe can get from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.4 seconds, while the i8 Roadster completes the sprint in 4.6 seconds.

Speaking of the Roadster, the First Edition version coming to Detroit is limited to a production run of just 200 units. These cars will also be available with all the body paint finishes and interior designs offered on the regular i8 Coupe and Roadster – including the newly introduced E-Copper metallic and Donington Grey Metallic.

As for the X2 crossover, it will bring its distinctive character to Detroit, showing off styling elements such as its BMW roundel on the C-pillars and its innovative take on the classic kidney grille, which has a wider outline at its base than at the top.

The first X2 version to hit the U.S. market will be the 228 HP (231 PS) xDrive28i, set to arrive in showrooms on March 3rd, 2018. The RWD-only sDrive28i model will join it a few months later.

BMW Puts 8-Series Concept In Front Of A Crowd, Perhaps For The Last Time 30

With the production-ready 8-Series Coupe coming out next year, it’s possible this might be one of the last, if not the very last time BMW shows off their 8-Series Concept at a car show.

The car was initially introduced earlier this year at Villa d’Este, after which it also made an appearance at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show. Now, with rumors of the production model debuting in Geneva next year, there wouldn’t be much else to do for the 8-Series Concept, but retire to memory.

Reports also suggest that once BMW puts the 8-Series Coupe into production next year, the Convertible will follow in 2019.

Yet, seeing this car in concept form remains very intriguing. We know the wing mirrors aren’t “keepers” and neither are those spectacular taillights or that futuristic steering wheel. However, the final product still manages to look genuinely sporty, despite all the camouflage.

Whether or not that’s going to be enough to give the S-Class Coupe a proper run for its money, remains to be seen.

BMW i Vision Dynamics Concept Visits Tesla Model 3 County 30

By bringing the i Vision Dynamics concept to the 2017 LA Auto Show, BMW has given Tesla engineers a chance to take a closer look at a potential Model 3 rival.

Even though BMW has yet to officially confirm the production version of the i Vision Dynamics, it’s safe to say they have no choice but to throw their hat in the ring and offer a mass-production 4-door EV of their own.

What they have said about this concept is that it could accelerate from 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) in under four seconds, hit a top speed of over 124 mph (200 km/h) and offer a range of 373 miles (600 km).

Compare it to the Tesla Model 3 and despite these numbers being preliminary, you’d be hard pressed to call it inferior. Aesthetically though, you could make a case for the i Vision Dynamics looking, well, more dynamic than the Model 3 – but again, we’ll have to see how the concept’s design will evolve once it’s ready for production.

Overall, we hope to see this car on the road as soon as possible, if only to admire its slim LED headlights, faux yet imposing grille, and three-dimensional taillights.

BMW Bringing New Electrified Model At LA Show, Likely The i8 Roadster 9

BMW seems to have put an end to reports surrounding the time and place of the i8 Roadster’s presentation by announcing a new electrified model for the 2017 LA Auto Show.

Part of the brand’s commitment to offer 25 green cars by 2025, with 12 of those models to have zero-emission powertrains, the new BMW i8 Roadster will be based on its facelifted coupe sibling, bar the folding soft top.

Technically, it will remain identical to the regular i8, but it has been suggested that its battery capacity might double, from 7.1 to 14kWh. This means that the current electric range will be significantly improved, likely rising from 23 miles (37km), to over 40 miles (64km). Moreover, the entire powertrain is believed to be slightly updated as well, making a combined output of near 400hp.

Joining the i8 Roadster on the showroom floor will be the BMW i Vision Dynamics, an electric four-door Grand Coupe that can accelerate from 0 to 60mph (96km/h) in 4.0 seconds, and reach a top speed of 120mph (193km/h), while boasting a range of 373 miles (600km).

The MINI Electric Concept will also celebrate its North American premier in LA, alongside the BMW i3s. Other vehicles made by the BMW Group set to shine under the spotlight in the City of Angels are the newly-unveiled M3 CS, 8-Series Concept, X7 iPerformance Concept, M5, and 6-Series Gran Turismo, which is offered locally from $69,700, in the 640i xDrive specification.
