Toyota e-Palette To Use A Mazda Rotary For A Range Extender 12

Toyota has revealed that its e-Palette Concept will use a Mazda-sourced rotary engine as a range extender.

Unveiled at CES 2018 in Las Vegas, the e-Palette Concept imagines a future where Toyota could partner with other companies to develop purpose-built vehicles and mobility solutions. Brands named as partners in the ‘e-Palette Alliance’ include Uber, Amazon, Pizza Hut, and Mazda.

Speaking with Green Car Reports at the Consumer Electronics Show, spokesman for Mazda North America, Jacob Brown, said Mazda’s engineering team will aid in the development of the vehicle’s powertrain, including supplying a rotary range extender.

“Mazda will provide technical information on a (rotary engine) range extender to be used in the vehicle being developed. We will reveal more details at an appropriate time,” Brown revealed.

By using a compact, light, and quiet rotary engine, Toyota could fit a smaller and less-expensive battery into the vehicle. If this happens, it would come on the back of admissions from Mazda that its rotary engine could eventually be used as a range extender in electrified vehicles.

As for the e-Palette itself, Toyota imagines the vehicle as being highly customizable and finding use as a package delivery van, ride-sharing vehicle, and a mobile e-commerce vehicle.

Toyota intends on conducting tests with the vehicle in the early 2020s and could use it as a mobility service for athletes during the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Tokyo, Japan.

This Toyota 86 Time Attack Car Has A BMW M5 V10 11

If you want to transform a Toyota 86 into a time attack machine, you could slap a turbo on the 2.0-liter four-cylinder or simply install an LS crate engine.

However, the Australian owner of this 86 decided against both of those options and has instead paired the Japanese sports car with BMW’s desirable S85 5.0-liter V10 found in the older M5 and M6 models.

Created by Zoom Garage, this 86 recently competed in Sydney’s World Time Attack Challenge and turned on the heat, not only looking good but also performing extremely well at Sydney Motorsport Park.

Rather than use the SMG transmission traditionally mated to the E60 M5’s V10, Zoom Garage opted for the six-speed manual from the E92 M3. Interestingly, the massive V10 slotted into the engine bay with relative ease, it was only the gearbox that caused a few headaches, forcing the tuner to customize the transmission tunnel to make everything fit.

Surprisingly, the V10 isn’t all that much heavier than the car’s standard flat-four. As standard, it weighs roughly 35 kg (77 lbs) more. However, by modifying the engine and installing a lightweight air intake, Zoom has significantly lowered its weight, ensuring that it is now just 10 kg (22 lbs) heavier than the flat-four. The S85 has also been modified with a dry sump setup alongside fuel pump and injector upgrades to allow it to run on E85 fuel.

CES 2018: Toyota e-Palette Concept Is The Future Of Service Vehicles 8

Toyota provided a glimpse into the future of mobility with the e-Palette concept, which made its debut at the 2018 Consumer Electronics Show on Monday.

The study imagines a future where Toyota merely manufactures the hardware and other companies provide the software to operate the vehicle.

The automaker also announced the e-Palette Alliance alongside the physical concept. The Alliance encompasses a host of launch partners, including Pizza Hut, Amazon, Mazda, and Uber, which will all leverage Toyota’s proprietary Mobility Services Platform (MSPF). The goal is to develop the right mobility services for the future alongside the appropriate vehicle.

As mentioned, that vehicle is the e-Palette. Toyota said the concept boasts an open interior ripe for customization. For example, the automaker imagines the concept vehicle as a package delivery van, a ride-sharing vehicle, and a mobile e-commerce vehicle.

The open interior design allows for purpose-built interiors to suit each of the mobility needs specifically. Thus, the e-Palette can shift from one service to the other and companies can ultimately share the platform. Pizza delivery vehicle by day, Uber ride-sharing vehicle by night.

Additionally, the automaker envisions the concept will come in three sizes to meet the needs of all businesses in the budding world of mobility services.

Various companies would take delivery of the e-Palette and provide their own self-driving-car software, while Toyota’s “Guardian” technology works to ensure proper operation. The same MSPF can also provide over-the-air updates for self-driving systems.

The concept isn’t quite a reality yet, however. The automaker’s president and namesake, Akio Toyoda, said the e-Palette concept and Alliance is a stepping stone for a new business model that balances traditional vehicle sales and new mobility services. Toyota hopes to conduct the first vehicle tests in the early 2020s and potentially provide mobility solutions for athletes competing in the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Tokyo, Japan.

2019 Toyota Avalon’s Taillights Revealed In New Teaser 5

Toyota is bringing the Avalon into its fifth generation, approximately six years after its predecessor debuted in full at the New York Auto Show.

And since it’s scheduled to be presented in front of an audience in just a little over a week, during the 2018 Detroit Auto Show, the automaker has shifted into second gear when it comes to its teaser campaign.

The latest video released by Toyota on social media reveals the car’s taillights, focusing on the modern sequential turn signals, a feature that can already be found on various other vehicles, including the Audi A4 – accompanied by the caption “first look at the all-new Avalon”.

This isn’t, however, the first look at the new generation Avalon, as we already caught a glimpse of its front end design last month, which is dominated by the LED-infused headlights, large air intakes, a generously sized grille, and muscular hood.

On the technical front, the 2019 Toyota Avalon is believed to share the TNGA platform with the latest Camry, in addition to some engines, such as the 3.5-liter V6 with 301hp (305PS) and 267lb-ft (362Nm) of torque. The large saloon is also expected to adopt a hybrid powertrain that combines a 2.5-liter unit with an electric motor, for a total of 208hp (211PS).

KBB Says 2018 Camry Is Still The Sensible Choice But With Added Flair 27

Since redesigning the Camry and giving it a more dynamic appearance and modern feel, Toyota has received a large number of positive reviews for their mid-size saloon.

The latest comes from Kelley Blue Book, who found out that the all-new Camry is the type of car that will do its A to B job splendidly, as it always has, but now is able to satisfy those looking for some spirited driving.

While the 2018 Camry is by no means a sports sedan, it does have better steering and improved road manners compared to any of its predecessors.

At the same time, it remains a very practical car and has a well-built interior with few, if any, negatives worth pointing out, like the infotainment system not supporting Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.

On the road, the 3.5-liter V6 version will please you the most, although if you go for the standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder you’ll be just fine, as it combines performance and efficiency.

Overall, it sounds like direct rivals such as the similarly priced Honda Accord, Kia Optima, Ford Fusion, Hyundai Sonata and Nissan Altima will definitely have their hands full trying to keep up with the ever popular Camry that, at last, seems to put its “competent, but boring to look at and drive” stereotype of its predecessors to rest.

Tesla Model X vs Toyota Land Cruiser Tug Of War: Who Wins? 14

Now that it’s not about 0-60 or 1/4 mile times, let’s see if the Tesla Model X is so smart when it comes to showing some old fashioned toughness.

Its opponent here is the iconic Toyota Land Cruiser, which won’t be setting any speed records any time soon, yet carries with it a very rich heritage as an extremely capable off-roader.

To make matters worse for the Tesla, the Land Cruiser is actually the lighter car here and the road surface is slippery – perhaps too slippery for the Model X to put down all that power and instant torque.

Speaking of slippery, according to the video’s description, the entire thing started when the owner of the Toyota claimed that his studless tires were better for these conditions. Granted, it would have been more exciting if they just wanted to see which car was “tougher”, but we’ll take any excuse to watch a Land Cruiser prove its mettle against what certain people in the off-roading community consider to be an iPad on wheels.

Jokes aside, the Toyota entered this fight as an underdog, so, how well do you figure it did?

2018 Toyota Sienna Is A Soccer Mom’s Best Friend 6

If you’re considering purchasing a minivan and the updated Toyota Sienna isn’t already on your shortlist, this review might actually convince you to reconsider.

Sure, minivans have fallen victim to stereotypes and buyers nowadays more often than not go for an SUV, regardless if they actually need its off-road abilities or not. It’s all about perception, and an SUV screams “adventure”, which the minivan certainly doesn’t, but as Kelley Blue Book’s Micah Muzio points out, the latter is still king when it comes to practicality – and the 2018 Sienna certainly has its eyes on the throne.

For the 2018MY, Toyota redesigned the Sienna’s front end by adding a lower grille and larger fog lights. Of course, with these types of cars, it’s less about styling and more about features – which is where the Sienna excels. Not only can you add Wi-Fi and a premium JBL system, but you also get a new rear-seat entertainment system with streaming capability (only for Android devices, at least for now), 360-degree camera, 4.2″ multi-info display and a total of five USB ports, plus loads of other stuff.

In the end, Muzio found the 2018 Sienna to be not just extremely practical, but also surprisingly competent on the road.

A bobcat has somehow survived a 50-mile journey in the front grille of a Toyota Prius after being struck in Richmond, Virginia.

WTVR reports that a woman driving to work last Thursday morning hit something on her journey. Unaware of what it was, she continued the drive and only noticed the bobcat wedged in the grille after a 50-mile and almost one-hour long drive into the city.

Shortly after, the woman contacted Richmond Animal Care & Control (RACC) who arrived on scene and quickly sedated and saved the animal.

“We got on scene and it really was true. It’s really a bobcat stuck in the front of a Prius grille,” said RACC officer Barbara Jones. “When we walked by, he hissed at us, so he’s alive and may be OK, which was so crazy since she drove from Gloucester to VCU.”

When the bobcat was sedated, rescuers manipulated the Prius’ bumper and were able to free it. Incredibly, the bobcat suffered no injuries other than a small cut on its back.

Crash Tests Reveal South Africa’s Most Popular Cars Are Worryingly Unsafe 26

Combining for 65% of all new cars sold in South Africa last year were the VW Polo Vivo, Datsun Go+, Toyota Etios, Renault Sandero and the Chery QQ3, a group of five extremely popular models.

Thanks to Global NCAP grabbing the entry-level version of each of these cars and testing their safety, we now know just how well they could protect occupants in the event of a crash.

While talking about the first ever crash-worthiness test for cars sold in Africa, Global NCAP chairman Lauchlan McIntosh says that such programs have led to safer cars being delivered in markets such as South America, India and the ASEAN region over the past five years.

“Working closely with our partners at the Automobile Association of South Africa and with the welcome support of the FIA Foundation and Bloomberg Philanthropies, our new campaign is an important first milestone on the road to Safer Cars for Africa.”

David Ward, secretary general of Global NCAP, added that “It is good to see a four star result in these first ever African crash test ratings. However, it’s extremely disappointing that there’s a zero star car. Such a poor result shows why it is so important for countries like South Africa to fully apply the UN’s crash test standards.”

Let’s run through these results and start with the only car here which achieved a four star rating for adult occupant protection.

Toyota Etios

The Etios’ structure was rated at stable during its frontal crash test, which was conducted at 64 km/h (39 mph). This model also came with seat belts with pretensioners for both front passengers, and achieved a three star rating for child occupant protection when Toyota-recommended child seats where used.

It’s worth noting that only the Etios and the Renault Sandero offer standard ISOFIX anchorages for the outboard rear positions and three-point seat belt for all passengers.

Renault Sandero

Like the Etios, the Sandero’s structure was also rated as “stable” during its frontal collision test, offering acceptable adult occupation protection. It wasn’t quite as good as the Toyota, but it did do better in the child occupant protection test where it achieved four stars – the best in the group.

Volkswagen Polo Vivo

The Polo Vivo delivered similar results to the Sandero as far as adult occupant protection is concerned. Also like the Sandero, it did not come with seat belt pretensioners. However, using child seats recommended by VW, the Polo Vivo only managed a three star rating for child protection.

Datsun GO+

Here’s where this list shifts from acceptable to downright scary. The Datsun GO+ achieved a one star rating for its poor driver occupant protection, and a two star rating for child occupant protection using child seats.

The dummy inside the car suffered chest damage (impact with the steering wheel, despite the airbag) during the frontal collision test, and the vehicle’s structure was rated unstable overall. There was also no airbag for the passenger.

Chery QQ3

Like Mr Ward said, the Chery QQ3’s performance was extremely disappointing. It achieved a zero star rating and its structure was deemed unstable as it collapsed during impact – resulting in injuries to the dummy’s head and chest.

Aside from not featuring any airbags, this car also didn’t have a manufacturer-recommended child seat, which explains why it received a zero star rating for child occupant protection as well.

In-Depth Review Finds Very Few Faults With 2018 Toyota Prius 18

If you’re in the market a practical and fuel efficient hatchback, the only thing that might keep you from considering buying a Prius straight up could be its looks.

Let’s face it, it does look futuristic, but it’s not the prettiest thing on the road. However, if you move past this aspect (or better yet you like the way it looks, since this is highly subjective), you’ll likely end up enjoying your purchase.

The 2018 Prius is a very practical car, with plenty of room for luggage, comfortable seats, impressive safety tech, lots of storage spaces and a well laid out cabin with strong visibility ahead and around the pillars.

On the road, the Prius is great around town, with excellent maneuverability. However, there were some downsides such as the overly sensitive brakes, road noise and poor rearwards visibility. It’s also not very quick, so if you’re looking for effortless motorway overtaking capability, you’d better look somewhere else.

On the plus side, Toyota made the 2018 Prius handle surprisingly well, with decent grip and steering feel. On top of that, there’s a ‘Power’ mode that improves performance, although it’s not going to help you win any drag races. But, at the end of the day, it’s a Prius, so this doesn’t rank very highly on its potential customers’ list anyway, does it?

This Is The Cheapest MKIV Toyota Supra In The U.S. 16
Nov
Posted by Brad Anderson in TOYOTA, Toyota Supra, Toyota Videos, video on 11 16th, 2017

What you’re looking at is one of the cheapest fourth-generation Toyota Supras in the United States and no, it isn’t as fast as you may expect.

YouTuber Tavarish purchased the white and red Japanese sports car earlier this month for a cool $23,000. Incredibly, that price was for an example fitted with the naturally-aspirated 2JZ engine, not the desirable twin-turbo 2JZ that has gone down in automotive folklore.

In the last decade, fourth-generation Supra prices have climbed drastically, even for entry-level variants. Consequently, the Supra is no longer a performance car bargain but that doesn’t mean it’s any less impressive than it was when new.

Beyond its rather questionable bodywork, Tavarish’s Supra did come with some desirable modifications, namely a new rear spoiler and the bigger brake kit from the twin-turbo Supra.

Would we pay $23,000 for a Supra like this? Probably not, but it’s clear many enthusiasts would.

Driving The Honda NSX, Toyota Supra And Mazda RX-7 Back-To-Back 11

Throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, many of Japan’s leading automakers built world-beating sports cars that were exceptionally fast, bewilderingly agile and in many ways, ahead of their European and American rivals.

Of all the iconic Japanese sports cars of the time, the first-generation Honda NSX, FD Mazda RX-7 and A80 Toyota Supra are among the most beloved. One fortunate YouTuber had the chance to jump behind the wheel of all three.

Despite all coming from Japan at roughly the same time, the Supra, NSX and RX-7 are all quite different from each other. Whereas the Supra is a straight-line warrior, the RX-7 is a more nimble and agile sports car powered by a high-revving rotary engine. By comparison, the NSX is the most exotic of the three, the only one that’s naturally-aspirated and the only one with its engine mounted behind passenger compartment.

If money wasn’t an issue and you could only buy one of the three, which would you choose?

New Toyota Supra Sounds Underwhelming In Latest Tests 8

If you’re a Toyota Supra enthusiast, you may want to block your ears for the video below. It is not encouraging.

Late last week, a prototype for the next-generation Supra was filmed accelerating near the streets of the Nurburgring sounding bland and no more exciting than a Toyota Camry or 86.

Later filmed at the German circuit itself, this prototype was even drowned out by the turbo four-cylinder of the Porsche 718 Cayman it was following. If you were hoping the new Supra would come with an engine as exciting as the famed 2JZ, you’ll be sorely disappointed.

According to our sources, not all hope is lost. While a four-cylinder engine with approximately 248 hp will be the most affordable powertrain option for the sports car, a 335 hp six-cylinder should also be made available to customers in the United States. If Toyota takes its duties seriously in developing a replacement to the fourth-gen Supra, it better ensure the inline-six version sounds much better than this prototype.

It remains to be seen when the new Supra will launch but a debut in the first half of 2018 is probable.
