Late last week, General Motors and Holden Special Vehicles (HSV) revealed that the Camaro and Silverado will be sold in Australia from 2018. Alongside this announcement, HSV previewed its potent Colorado SportsCat. Now’s the time to enjoy this wild pickup in all of its glory.

Perhaps created as a pre-emptive strike towards the upcoming Ford Ranger Raptor, the Holden Colorado SportsCat by HSV is based on the Colorado CrewCab Z71 and uses the same 2.8-liter Duramax Turbo Diesel engine delivering 197 hp and 368 lb-ft of torque.

While those figures aren’t mind-blowing, the exterior design of the SportsCat is. Available in SportsCat and SportsCat+ guises, the pickup benefits from a custom blacked-out front grille and air intakes, LED fog lamps, flared fenders, twin tow hooks, tonneau cover, fender graphics, and matte black 18-inch wheels. Elements unique to the SportsCar+ include a honeycomb grille, hood bulge, and machined faces on the wheels.

In the cabin, the two variants are equipped with Jasmine leather-wrapped SV sports seats, suede and red accents, and some obligatory HSV badging.

Under the skin, HSV has fitted new sports suspension with an increased front spring rate. Additionally, there are 285/60 Cooper Zeon LTZ Pro Sports All-Terrain tires, a 45-mm ride height increase, 30 mm wider track, and an AP Racing brake system. Additional mechanical modifications include an automatically de-coupling rear anti-roll bar and optional HSV SupaShock suspension, previously used by the crazy GTSR W1.

GM And HSV Announce Camaro SS And Silverado HD Heading To Australia Next Year 7
Dec
Posted by Michael Gauthier in Australia, Chevrolet, Chevrolet Camaro, Chevrolet Colorado, Chevrolet Silverado, GM, HSV on 12 7th, 2017

General Motors and Holden Special Vehicles have reached an agreement which will ensure the latter company remains active following the death of the rear-wheel drive Holden Commodore.

Described as a “pivotal moment” in HSV’s history, the agreement paves the way for an assortment of new vehicles to come to Australia. There will be two “product streams” and the first will consist of the familiar vehicle enhancement program that is offered on existing Holden vehicles.

An example of this is the new HSV SportsCat which is based on the Holden Colorado. The model features an all-new front fascia with a revised grille, tow hooks, and LED fog lights. Other notable features include new fender flares, a retuned suspension, and an increased ride height.

Power is provided by a 2.8-liter Duramax Turbo Diesel engine that produces up to 197 hp (147 kW) and 368 lb-ft (500Nm) of torque. It can be connected to either a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission.

The second product stream is more exciting as it will see HSV launch all-new vehicles in Australia. These include the Chevrolet Camaro and Silverado HD which will retain their bow-tie badging.

On the Silverado side, HSV will offer 4×4 Crew Cab variants of the 2500HD WT, 2500HD LTZ, 2500HD LTZ Midnight Edition, 2500HD LTZ Custom Sport Edition, and 3500HD LTZ. All of the models will come equipped with a 6.6-liter Duramax Turbo Diesel V8 engine that produces approximately 445 hp (332 kW) and 910 lb-ft (1,234 Nm) of torque. The engine will be paired a standard six-speed automatic transmission.

The Camaro, on the other hand, will arrive in 2018 in 2SS guise. The model will have a 6.2-liter V8 engine which produces up to 455 hp (340 kW) and 453 lb-ft (615 Nm) of torque. Unfortunately for performance fans, it will only be offered with an eight-speed automatic transmission.

The model will come nicely equipped with HID headlights, a rear spoiler, and 20-inch alloy wheels with Goodyear Eagle tires. The Camaro also has heated / ventilated leather sport seats, a dual-zone automatic climate control system, and a 9-speaker Bose audio system.

According to HSV Managing Director Tim Jackson, “This marks a whole new era for HSV and Holden and I hope our customers are as excited as we are. HSV is moving beyond simply ‘hotting up’ existing models, and customers will see two product streams from HSV over the next few years.”

His sentiments were echoed by Holden Managing Director Mark Bernhard who remarked, “Today is a great day for Holden and HSV, but even more importantly, for our customers”.

2018 NACTOY Finalists Announced, Can You Pick The Winners? 29

The 2018 North American Car, Truck and Utility of the Year (NACTOY) finalists have been announced at the 2017 Los Angeles Auto Show.

The shortlist includes three names in each category, which were chosen by a panel of nearly 60 automotive journalists, following some extensive testing. The jurors will now have to trim down the list furthermore by announcing the big winners, on January 15, at the 2018 Detroit Auto Show.

However, until they do, let’s take a look at the 2018 North American Car of the Year category, which sees the Alfa Romeo Giulia, Audi A5 Sportback, BMW 5-Series, Hyundai Ioniq, Kia Rio, Lexus LC500, Porsche Panamera, and Subaru Impreza removed, as the only vehicles still present are the Honda Accord, Kia Stinger, and Toyota Camry.

The 2018 North American Utility of the Year award, on the other hand, will go to the Alfa Romeo Stelvio, Honda Odyssey, or Volvo XC60. These were favored over the Audi Q5, BMW X3, Buick Enclave, Chevrolet Equinox, Chevrolet Traverse, Jeep Compass, Kia Niro, Land Rover Discovery, Mazda CX-5, Subaru Crosstrek, Volkswagen Atlas, and Volkswagen Tiguan.

Things don’t look different at all in the 2018 North American Truck of the Year category, as the Chevrolet Colorado ZR2, Ford Expedition, and Lincoln Navigator are still very much present.

“The task of selecting these nine finalists – especially in the car and ultra-competitive category – was extremely difficult”, said the organization’s Secretary-Treasurer Lauren Fix. “And while there may be some favorites among the finalists, any of these vehicles could end up walking away with the trophy in their category, when we announce the winners in Detroit, in January.”

Last year, the Chevrolet Bolt was named North American Car of the Year, whereas the Truck of the Year and Utility of the Year awards went to the Honda Ridgeline, and Chrysler Pacifica, respectively.
