Back in 2016, Land Rover stated that the classic Defender wouldn’t return to production. The automaker, though, didn’t say anything about special edition models. While it’s easy to get excited and think that the Defender is back, this variant of the iconic Defender is a limited-edition model.

Land Rover’s Restoring This Long-Lost Series I Prototype 14
Jan

Land Rover is at a vital crossroads in its history. Not only is it celebrating its 70th anniversary this year, but its core model – the legendary Defender – has been discontinued ahead of the introduction of an completely new model.

Sounds like a good time to us to look back and reflect on how far it’s come, and that’s just what it’s doing with the restoration of this vital early prototype.

One of 48 pre-production prototypes and three displayed upon the vehicle’s debut at the 1948 Amsterdam Motor Show, this Series I model was lost for a long time, but has now been found.

The prototypical off-roader (if one could ever be called that) remained in use through the 1960s, after which it sat for 20 years in a field in Wales before being bought as a fixer-upper project… but that project was never completed. Not until it was discovered, oddly enough, just a few miles outside of Solihull – the same place where it was made seven decades prior, and where Land Rover still produces the Discovery and several Range Rover models.

With the historical records now retrieved, the team at Jaguar Land Rover Classic will now undertake its restoration, which as you can see will take some work. The process will include reworking the thicker aluminum bodywork, galvanized chassis, and removable rear tub that characterized those 48 pre-production prototypes, while preserving to the greatest extent possible the patina it has accrued over the decades.

Which Land Rover Should Get The SVX Treatment Next? 2
Jan
Posted by Carscoops Staff in Land Rover, Land Rover Defender, Land Rover Discovery, Land Rover Freelander, Range Rover, Range Rover Evoque, Range Rover Velar, Renderings on 01 2nd, 2018

The hardcore version of the Discovery, which was unveiled by Land Rover at Frankfurt this past September, wasn’t the first SVX model it’s done – and it won’t be the last.

The question is, which of the British sport-ute manufacturer’s products should be the next to get the SVX treatment? Well, here are a few ideas.

Rendering artist Nikita Aksyonov recently gave us a speculative preview of what the flagship Range Rover would look like in SVX spec, and has now followed up with more.

In the gallery below, you’ll see similar takes on the Defender, Freelander, Evoque, Evoque Convertible, and Velar, along with the aforementioned Range Rover as well, all done up with similar equipment to the Discovery SVX.

Now some of them seem more likely than others. The Velar? Maybe. The Evoque? Probably not. The Evoque Convertible? Even less so. The Freelander won’t happen since it’s already been phased out, replaced as it has by the new Discovery Sport, but the latter could make a good basis.

As for the Defender, well that’s already spawned an SVX version – or, more accurately, two: the first back in 2008 (which was 10 years ago now, if you can believe it), and those jacked-up, roped-off Defender 110 short-bed, double-cab pickups in Spectre that were crafted jointly by JLR Special Vehicle Operations and the company’s longtime off-road racing partner Bowler.

Making another one, then, would hardly seem like much of a stretch. As always, we’ll keep an eye for it, so you might want to watch this space.

Next Land Rover Defender To Offer All-Electric Variant 22
Dec
Posted by Brad Anderson in Electric Vehicles, Land Rover, Land Rover Defender, Reports, SUV on 12 22nd, 2017

Land Rover’s next-generation Defender will premiere in the next 12 months and is expected to be sold with an all-electric powertrain.

The British carmaker has previously hinted about the possibility of a zero-emissions Defender, and Motoring now claims to have received word that the car has been given the go-ahead for production.

The claim comes from an unnamed “senior Jaguar Land Rover source” but no further details, including the size of the battery pack, have been revealed at this stage. With that being said, we know that the model will utilize at least one electric motor, potentially more.

Allowing the new Land Rover Defender to be offered with a host of different powertrains will be its platform. Rather than using the architecture of the next-gen Evoque or Land Rover Discovery Sport, or even the steel/aluminum platform of various Jaguar models, the new Defender is set to be underpinned by a custom version of the aluminum platform used by the Discovery, Range Rover, and Range Rover Sport.

Offered alongside the all-electric Defender will be a number of petrol, diesel, and hybrid alternatives.

Land Rover Scared Of Chinese Clones, Will Skip Defender Concept And Show Production Car In 2018 14
Dec
Posted by Michael Karkafiris in Land Rover, Land Rover Defender, Reports on 12 14th, 2017

The new Land Rover Defender will break cover in late 2018 in its final production form and not as a concept previewing the final product.

Codenamed L663, the new Defender will be the centerpiece of Land Rover’s 70th anniversary celebrations late next year.

The company’s decision to skip showing a concept prior to the real thing is because Land Rover is now wary of revealing concept cars in general for fear of their design being plagiarized, Autocar reports.

Back in 2011, Land Rover revealed the DC100 concept pictured here, but the negative reaction was so big that forced them to go back to the drawing board. The bigger reason however for delaying the introduction of a new Defender was the difficulty of building a viable business model for the new off-roader.

The old Defender never managed to sell more than 20,000 units per year towards the end of its career and Land Rover needs to sell as many as 100,000 units annually in order to make the new Defender a viable model.

Land Rover is going to use a toughened-up version of the D7u architecture used in the Range Rover, Range Rover Sport and Discovery models. Petrol and diesel engines from the Ingenium family will be on offer, helping the new Defender not only achieve the necessary economy of scale in production but also making it eligible for sale in regions like the US and Canada.

Land Rover wants the new Defender to become their most off-road capable model yet obviously and that’s why it’ll have a fully updated suite of technologies based on their latest Terrain Response II system offered in the Discovery.

Sales of the new Land Rover Defender are expected to start in 2019.

Kahn Design Previews The Insane Flying Huntsman 6×6 Soft Top 8
Dec

The Mercedes-Maybach G650 Landaulet was one of the more insane convertibles to be introduced recently and Kahn Design is trying to top it by announcing plans for a new Flying Huntsman 6×6 Soft Top.

Designed to bring an “element of adventure, engineering and romanticism to the most seasoned of Defender owners and enthusiasts,” the Flying Huntsman 6×6 Soft Top is based on the Land Rover Defender 110 and features six wheels like the Mercedes G63 AMG 6×6.

The company is keeping tip-lipped on details but the image suggests the model will have a fixed roof over the main passenger compartment. The rear-seat occupants, on the other hand, can enjoy an open air experience thanks to a retractable soft top.

Other notable styling features include front fender vents, side steps, and large wheels with off-road tires. The model also has a wide body kit and custom bodywork behind the rear doors.

Additional information will be announced in the coming months but the model could be equipped with a GM-sourced 6.2-liter LS3 V8 engine that develops around 430 hp (320 kW).
