Robert Kubica Reportedly Out Of Contention For Williams F1 Drive 12
Dec

Robert Kubica is reportedly out of contention to land a drive with the Williams F1 team for the 2018 season.

For the past six months, the popular Polish driver has been at the center of one the most intriguing F1 comeback stories in history. However, sources close to the team indicate that Kubica’s long-expected return to the sport won’t happen, at least not with Williams.

Planet F1 reports that the team has set its sights on Sergey Sirotkin to fill the vacant seat left behind by Felipe Massa. While Kubica reportedly impressed during the two-day Pirelli tire test at the conclusion of the 2017 season, Sirotkin was also fast and brings with him significant sponsorship backing of roughly $15 million a year.

A deal with Sirotkin has yet to be reached and even if one can’t be reached, Kubica won’t be the back-up for Williams. Instead, axed Toro Rosso driver Daniil Kvyat is said to be the team’s second choice.

Williams F1 Driver Lance Stroll Will Race In Daytona 24 Hours 2
Dec
Posted by Brad Anderson in F1, Motorsport, racing, Reports, Williams on 12 2nd, 2017

Williams Formula One driver Lance Stroll will compete at January’s Daytona 24 Hours, joining McLaren’s Fernando Alonso at the famous endurance race.

Like Alonso, Stroll will compete in the LMP2 category, but unlike his F1 compatriot, will be driving an Oreca-Gibson 07 from the Jackie Chan DC Racing squad along with Felix Rosenqvist, Daniel Juncadella and Robin Frijns.

“Sometimes it’s nice to step back and do something that’s a bit less high pressure — I’m looking forward to having some fun,” Stroll said to Autosport.

“I’ll be out there with some of my buddies in the same car, and it’s going to be a pleasure to do this race again because I just love to race. We are the four young guns so it will be great fun, I’m sure, because we go way back together.”

Stroll has a close relationship with his three Daytona teammates. He raced alongside Felix Rosenqvist during the European Formula 3 Championship and works with the same driver management firm as Daniel Juncadella and Robin Frijns.

This won’t be Stroll’s first rodeo at the event, as he raced a Ganassi Riley-Ford Daytona Prototype in 2016.

Robert Kubica Edging Closer To F1 Return With Williams 27
Nov
Posted by Brad Anderson in Motorsport, racing, Reports, Williams on 11 27th, 2017

Robert Kubica is shaping up to make a return to Formula One with the Williams team.

In recent months, Kubica has been one of at least three drivers, including Paul di Resta and Pascal Wehrlein, vying for Felipe Massa’s seat at Williams. In the lead-up to a test in Abu Dhabi during the week, Mercedes F1 boss Toto Wolff has revealed to Autosport that Kubica is the most likely driver to get the job.

“I think it has been clearly said that Williams’s priority is Robert. Robert from my point of view deserves the chance in the Williams, and it’s out of Pascal’s hands.

“There is still a tiny possibility [for Wehrlein] if Robert doesn’t do well, but none of us wishes him to not do well.

“All of us are actually cheering for him. I’m in two minds because I think for F1, for Robert, and for Williams it will be great if he performs, and on the other side it looks like it’s Pascal’s last chance, and he’s our junior,” Wolff said.

In the lead-up to the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, many reports surfaced suggesting that a deal between Kubica and Williams had already been finalized. However, Williams boss Paddy Lowe has since revealed that Kubica must first receive medical clearance to be granted an FIA super license.

“Yes, we are working with him now to assess whether his past injuries will affect his ability to perform in Formula 1. I would say that until now there have been no problems. Let’s see what happens next week.

“Williams is considering other candidates and we will not make our decision this weekend or even next week,” Lowe told Autoweek.

Kubica has been vying to make a return to Formula One for the past six months following his departure from the sport in 2011 after almost losing his right arm in a rally accident. In September, 2016 F1 Drivers’ World Champion Nico Rosberg joined the Polish driver’s management team to get him back into F1.

Singer And Williams Reveal Their Breathtaking 500HP Porsche 911 15

Singer has been working with Williams Advanced Engineering for their latest project which is a rather stunning reimagined 911 that received newly-developed lightweight and high-performance modifications.

The project was born under the Dynamics and Lightweighting Study (DLS) name, with Singer partnering with Williams and other world-renowned specialists, including Michelin, Brembo and BBS Motorsport.

It’s hard to choose a highlight on this magnificent creation, but if you have to pick one it has to be the new four-valve, four-camshaft naturally aspirated 4.0-liter flat-six engine with 500hp, developed by Williams with consultation from none other than Hans Mezger, the legendary Porsche engineer.

Other details include the new underbody and surface aerodynamic enhancements, again by Williams and Porsche Motorsport legend Norbert Singer, via computational fluid dynamics (CFD). If you take a closer look at the renderings, you’ll notice that even the taillights now feature air outlets, not to mention the rear diffuser and the various scoops everywhere.

The new car is also lighter thanks to the increased use of exotic materials like magnesium, titanium and carbon fiber. The end result is a staggering minimum vehicle weight of 990kg/2180lbs.

The new DLS package is completed by the improved suspension, which is now lighter and offers better adjustability and enhanced geometry. Features like the bespoke Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires, the lightweight 18-inch BBS-Motorsport forged-magnesium alloys, carbon Brembo brakes, the bespoke EXE-TC dampers and a special lightweight six-speed manual transmission made out of magnesium from Hewland can also be specified should the customer wants to.

Only 75 cars will be built at a dedicated Singer facility housed on the Williams campus in the UK, with the company having racing driver Marino Franchitti and Top Gear presenter Chris Harris serving as consultants and vehicle dynamics development drivers.

Williams Driver Felipe Massa Retires (Again) From Formula One 5
Nov
Posted by Carscoops Staff in F1, Motorsport, racing, Williams on 11 5th, 2017

After a long and distinguished career, Felipe Massa is retiring from Formula One, leaving a seat open at Williams next season.

Sound familiar? That’s because this isn’t the first time Massa and Williams have made that exact announcement.

The Brazilian driver revealed his intentions to leave F1 at the end of last season, but agreed to postpone his departure after his teammate Valtteri Bottas left for Mercedes (to take Nico Rosberg’s place). But Williams have been dragging its feet in deciding on its lineup for next season, and Felipe isn’t waiting around to find out what they decide. Either that, or he already has.

One of the most seasoned drivers in the sport, 36-year-old Massa made his grand-prix debut in 2002, returned again in 2004 (after a season off as a Ferrari test driver), and has been on the grid ever since. He’s driven for Sauber, Ferrari, and now Williams, winning 11 races along the way and finishing a career-best second place in the 2008 championship, just a single point behind Lewis Hamilton.

“I have now enjoyed four great years with the team, but my career in Formula One will finally come to an end this season,” said Massa. “I take so many great memories with me as I prepare for my final two races in Brazil and Abu Dhabi, and although they will be emotional, I am looking forward to ending on a high note and preparing for a new chapter in my career.”

Felipe has been linked to a drive in Formula E or DTM, but the bigger question at the moment is who Williams will sign to take his place in F1. Massa’s current teammate Lance Stroll is in contention, as are former F1 drivers Robert Kubica and Paul di Resta. Having been dropped by Red Bull/Toro Rosso, Daniil Kvyat could also be in contention.

“The team will announce its 2018 driver line-up in due course,” read the statement on Massa’s departure. Williams is one of three teams that has yet to confirm its roster for next season, alongside Toro Rosso and Sauber.
