Edmunds Buys Its Own Tesla Model 3, Delivers First Impressions 13

After placing a reservation in early 2016, Edmunds received its own Tesla Model 3 to put through its long-term testing process.

As with all the cars in this first production batch, this Model 3 is the Long Range version that also features the mandatory-for-now Premium Upgrades pack as well as the Autopilot semi-autonomous system. All this equipment increased the price of Edmunds’ Model 3 up from the base $44,000 to $55,000.

First impressions of the Model 3 are more than positive, with the car being pretty quick, while the chassis feels sorted and showing off its good balance and low center of gravity.

The biggest talking point however is the ergonomics of the minimalist cabin; cramming everything into a big, landscape-oriented touchscreen requires more time than usual for the driver to learn where everything is. But even when he does, things like not having a speedometer ahead of the driver remain less than ideal.

The Model 3 is definitely the brand’s make-or-break car, but the first impressions so far point at a well-sorted compact saloon that has that special Tesla character people seem to like so much.

In case anyone was worried about whether or not the Tesla Model 3 can keep up with various petrol-powered sports saloons, the answer is a resounding yes.

According to a VBox test performed by Brooks from DragTimes, this Model 3 managed to sprint from a standstill to 60 mph (96 km/h) in approximately 4.66 seconds. That makes it quicker than the previous generation E90 BMW M3.

The car in question featured the Premium package and a bigger battery pack, but was otherwise stock, making these results even more impressive.

In fact, this car (with the 70 kWh battery pack) should have done 0 to 60 in 5.1 seconds, according to Tesla. Although seeing it do even better doesn’t exactly come as a shock.

We can only imagine how quick the upcoming dual-motor performance version will be, since it will also feature a Ludicrous mode like its Model S and X siblings.

Tesla Model X Exceeds Towing Limit, Pulls Volvo Semi In The Snow 5

Despite some very slippery conditions, this Tesla Model X managed to pull a struggling Volvo semi truck up a hill in Raleigh, North Carolina.

One reason why it looks as though it’s having a hard time is the snow. If the road was dry and there wasn’t an incline, that Model X would have probably done a cleaner and better pull.

If you think it wouldn’t, just remember that a Touareg V10 TDI once pulled a Boeing 747, and that a Cayenne S Diesel once towed a 285 tonne (628,317 lbs) Airbus A380.

On paper, the towing limit for the Model X is roughly 5,000 lbs (2,2 tonnes), but it’s safe to assume that the all-electric SUV can easily exceed that number over short distances – especially when fitted with the correct weather tires to improve grip.

When asked how far the Tesla had to tow the semi, the person who posted the video stated that it was “up the whole hill,” and confirmed that there “really wasn’t much stress on the car at all.” To be fair, the Volvo semi was doing its part to help itself, constantly searching for grip.

Since there aren’t many supercars that can keep up with a Tesla Model S P100D over short distances, perhaps it’s time for everyone to acknowledge just how quick the all-new NSX really is.

This is the same NSX that ran a 1/4 mile in just over 11 seconds last week, maxing out at 124 mph (200 km/h) as it crossed the finish line. It’s also mostly stock, with the only modification being a Fabspeed exhaust system. It may not be as powerful as the P100D, but its 581 PS (573 HP) and 686 Nm (506 lb-ft) of torque is nothing to laugh at.

The two cars raced twice, though the second time, the Model S didn’t have as good a start as it did during the first run. Either way, it was really close, with just 0.14 seconds between them.

So, did the NSX manage to outrun the all-conquering Tesla? There’s only one way to find out: just press the play button in the video that follows right after the jump.

If you fancy the Tesla Model 3 and you’d like to explore its “darker side”, adding matte black accents, black wheels and tinted windows should definitely do the trick.

After getting their hands on this Midnight Silver Metallic Model 3, tuner T Sportline ditched the chrome window surrounds by using a satin black film, and added a 3M Crystalline tint to all the window surfaces.

Other mods include the custom matte black 19″ TST wheels, plus the matte black door handles and T emblem, giving the car a slightly more sinister appearance.

The tuner went with a 70% window tint for the windshield and the glass roof, while the driver and passenger side windows and the rear hatch got a 40% tint.

As for those wheels, they’re available in three different colors (Matte Black, Gloss Black, Metallic Gray, Brilliant Silver) and cost $1,600.

Tesla Celebrates The Holidays With Santa Mode Easter Egg 26

To help celebrate the holiday season, Tesla has introduced a special ‘Santa Mode’ easter egg for the Model S and Model X.

Santa Mode can be accessed through the Easter egg section of the infotainment system which now features a reindeer button. Once engaged, Santa Mode transforms the car usually displayed on the digital gauge cluster into a Santa sleigh and surrounding vehicles into reindeers.

Additionally, Santa Mode starts playing ‘Run Rudolph Run’ and when a turn signal is engaged, the sound of sleigh bells fills the cockpit. Last but not least, the road displayed on the dash turns icy on those Tesla Model S and Model X vehicles with Autopilot.

Last year, Tesla introduced a different Christmas easter egg. At the press of a button, it saw the vehicle opening and closing its doors, flashing the lights, and playing Christmas tunes in a rather dazzling display.

Drone Footage Reveals That Tesla Has Ramped Up Model 3 Production 23

Tesla is well behind schedule with its Model 3, but drone footage of the carmaker’s Fremont factory shows that it has increased its entry-level model production in recent months.

In October, Tesla revealed that it built just 260 examples of the Model 3 in the third quarter of the year “due to production bottlenecks.” This was significantly less than the 1500 units which Musk asserted Tesla could build in September alone.

This clip perfectly captures the enormity of the automaker’s facility and the large number of Model 3s sitting in parking lots at the site. At the same time, it’s baffling why so many new Teslas are still in the company’s parking lots, especially since over 400,000 people are waiting for their EVs to be delivered.

Nevertheless, Tesla fanatics and Model 3 customers will, in all likelihood, be happy with the news that the automaker is finally is increasing its inventory.

Tesla Model X And Hummer H2 Engage In A Tug Of War 22

The Tesla Model X has already proved its credentials by offering a very good electric range, and being surprisingly faster than some supercars on the drag strip.

It also confirmed that it’s not afraid to get mud on that expensive body, or take its chances on sand, but how does it fare against a true off-roader such as the Hummer H2?

For this adventure, the two very different SUVs haven’t been taken on a challenging terrain, as they remained on the comfort of the asphalt, for a good old-fashioned tug of war game, split into three different rounds.

This is where the Tesla Model X’s instant electric torque should have made a difference, but the road surface was either wet or icy, so it quickly became a grip challenge, as whichever vehicle lost traction first, lost.

However, we do know that the EV had no trouble in showing a Toyota Land Cruiser who’s boss on snow, so surely the Hummer H2 could not have driven away victorious. Or could it?

Can A Stock Camaro ZL1 Beat Tesla’s Model S P100D In A Straight Line? 16

Ever since Tesla came out with the ultra-fast Model S P100D, we’ve seen it tackle several muscle cars and come out on top, especially over short distances like the 1/4 mile.

This is due to the fact that the all-electric saloon has as much as 920 lb-ft (1,247 Nm) of torque available from the word go, which puts it at a major advantage compared to pretty much any internal combustion powered opponent.

Meanwhile, the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 is putting down 650 horses and 650 lb-ft (881 Nm) of torque, and while it’s not quite as powerful as the Tesla, it might have a chance while racing from a rolling start.

From a standstill, it’s hard for any supercar to keep up with a Model S P100D, unless we’re talking about the McLaren 720S, but as you already know, that one is knocking on hypercar territory.

Anyway, despite having rear-wheel drive and a 6-speed manual transmission, this 2017 ZL1 performed really well from a rolling start. To find out whether it was able to beat the Tesla, though, you’ll have to watch the video right after the break.

Tesla Model X vs Toyota Land Cruiser Tug Of War: Who Wins? 14
Dec

Now that it’s not about 0-60 or 1/4 mile times, let’s see if the Tesla Model X is so smart when it comes to showing some old fashioned toughness.

Its opponent here is the iconic Toyota Land Cruiser, which won’t be setting any speed records any time soon, yet carries with it a very rich heritage as an extremely capable off-roader.

To make matters worse for the Tesla, the Land Cruiser is actually the lighter car here and the road surface is slippery – perhaps too slippery for the Model X to put down all that power and instant torque.

Speaking of slippery, according to the video’s description, the entire thing started when the owner of the Toyota claimed that his studless tires were better for these conditions. Granted, it would have been more exciting if they just wanted to see which car was “tougher”, but we’ll take any excuse to watch a Land Cruiser prove its mettle against what certain people in the off-roading community consider to be an iPad on wheels.

Jokes aside, the Toyota entered this fight as an underdog, so, how well do you figure it did?

Consumer Reports Advises Against Relying On Tesla Model S’ Autopilot 12

Posted by Cristian Gnaticov in Consumer Reports, Reports, reviews, Tesla, Tesla Model S, Tesla Videos, video on 12 12th, 2017

Consumer Reports are revisiting the Tesla Model S, a car that’s not exactly new to begin with, as it was launched in 2012, receiving a facelift last year.

However, the review brings us up to date with Tesla’s latest revisions.

Thanks to a network of quick charging stations, filling the battery doesn’t take that long, and once you’re done, expect a driving range in excess of 350 miles (563km) in the 100D grade, or 275 miles (443km) in the entry-level 75D.

The instant torque provided by the electric powertrain is another reward of driving a Tesla Model S, which tackles corners quite well thanks to its balanced weight distribution, and absorbs most bumps on the road.

Inside, the cabin is dominated by a huge 17-inch touch-screen display that controls pretty much everything, from the suspension ride height to the infotainment system and sunroof, and gives the zero-emission sedan a futuristic yet minimalistic look.

Over the years, Elon Musk’s company has significantly upgraded the Model S, from adding new batteries and all-wheel drive, to various other technologies. The most discussed highlight, though, is the Autopilot system, a function that allows drivers to relax behind the wheel on the motorway or in congested traffic, but CR advises users not to rely on it as the “ultimate self-driving system”, as it’s far from flawless.

Tesla Model X Goes Sand Surfing In The Desert 11
Dec

The Middle East has a very different car culture, one that often includes high-speed drifting on public roads and the ever-popular dune bashing.

So how do you combine that with Tesla’s Model X without ruining the electric crossover? Why, you take it on a milder sand-surfing adventure, of course, in Dubai’s desert, in this case.

The video posted online shows the zero-emission crossover having fun in the sand, and even if it’s not as extreme as those Qataris jumping over the dunes in their Toyotas, Nissans, and other SUVs, it’s not like you see a Tesla Model X being taken out of its comfort zone every day, is it?

This film reminds us of yet another Tesla Model X, which was subjected to an off-roading adventure earlier this year, towing a small trailer packed with firewood behind it, and proving that grass and mud aren’t enough to scare it away.

We have the weirdest feeling that Teslas will be punished a lot in the future, once Elon Musk’s company finally rolls out that electric pickup truck, which looks pretty much ready to tackle some challenging terrains in the teaser posted by the automaker.

Our favorite Top Gear presenter finally gets a go in Tesla’s Model S P100D, giving us some of his thoughts on arguably one of the most hyped automobiles out there.

It’s easy to understand why the Model S P100D created such a huge ripple effect in the automotive scene, as it’s basically a long-range electric vehicle that can accelerate faster than almost anything in the market right now.

It’s also a really good road car, offering plenty of room for five or seven passengers and their luggage as well as tons of grip and near-silent comfort, not to mention that it’s supported by the most complete charging infrastructure out there.

Despite all the amazing credentials Tesla’s ultra-fast Model S comes with, and unlike other reviewers, Harris wan’t that impressed by it and makes some very interesting observations, as you can see in the video that follows.

Can Mercedes-AMG E63S Outrace A Tesla Model S P100D? 9

With the Mercedes-AMG E63S repeatedly impressing everyone with its sheer acceleration force, it was always a matter of time before someone would pit it against a Tesla Model S.

UK’s Top Gear magazine has a love affair with drag races and they just had to see if the latest weapon from AMG has any chance of wiping that smug smile off the Model S’s face.

The latest E63 S features a special all-wheel drive system which clearly has made it a true monster when taking off from a stop.

Its twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 sends 604hp and 627lb-ft of torque to all four wheels via a nine-speed Speedshift MCT gearbox, propelling the E63 S to 62mph in just 3.4 seconds. The Tesla Model S P100D on the other hand has two electric motors for a total of 680hp and a 0-62mph in a mind-boggling 2.7 seconds.

Stupid amounts of power combined with all-wheel drive equals good drag racing, so let’s find out which one is faster.
