Jaguar is entering into the Super Bowl commercial realm spending the big bucks on this 1 minute slot featuring British actors (villains) and the all-new “Bad” F-Type Coupe. They are all obsessed by power, which the new F-Type has plenty of. Thoughts on this one?

I remember back in the day when BMW had a set of simply astonishing and creative short films showcasing the latest and greatest the land of Bavaria had to offer on 4 wheels. This time the orient goes the way of the British featuring the all-new Jaguar F-Type in a Ridley Scott Associates short film called “Desire”. The film serves up a nice plot with a twist, rather reminiscent of the infamous BMW Films. I have to say, it is not that bad especially with Damian Lewis (from Homeland and Band of Brothers), Jordi Mollà and the stunning Jaguar F-Type purring for the camera. Enjoy!

To be honest, we have no idea who Lana Del Rey is, other than “some British singer.” While there’s no denying that she’s easy on the eyes, so is the upcoming Jaguar F-Type roadster. To promote the car, Jaguar is tying into Del Rey’s latest video, which is big on heavy breathing and sex appeal.

There’s nothing wrong with that, but let’s be clear on one point: a truly remarkable sports car will sell itself. If the F-Type is as good as Jaguar claims it is, then all the sexed-up music videos in the world won’t sell one additional car. If it isn’t above the competition, especially at the price Jaguar is asking, then all the steamy videos in the world won’t help move inventory.

While we’ve yet to climb behind the wheel of the F-Type, we can’t help question the logic of Jaguar’s pricing. The base model, with a supercharged 3.0-liter V-6, starts at $69,875 including destination charge. Opt for the mid-range F-Type S, which uses the same engine but gets a 40 horsepower bump (to 380 hp), and the base price is $81,875. If only the fastest model will do, expect to pay at least $92,875 for the supercharged F-Type V8 S, which makes 495 horsepower.

Whether Jaguar likes it or not, the F-Type will be shopped against the less-powerful (but beautifully balanced) Porsche Boxster and Boxster S. The Boxster, which only makes 265 horsepower from its normally-aspirated flat-six engine, starts at just $50,450, while the faster Boxster S (which makes 315 hp) is priced from $61,850.

That makes the Boxster S more than $8,000 less expensive than the base Jaguar F-Type. Will the car’s pricing prove to be overly ambitious, or right on the money? Will Lana Del Rey help sell the F-Type to the affluent and fashionable crowd? Will the F-Type help boost Lana Del Rey’s career? Why is a woman, dressed in orange, walking a tiger in the city?

We can’t answer any of those questions, but we’re just as curious as you are.

After countless spy shots and spy videos of the Jaguar F-Type wrapped in newsprint camouflage, Jaguar has finally taken the wraps off its eagerly awaited sports car. As we expected, the new F-Type is a stunner, and it sounds like it has the potential to reestablish Jaguar as a builder of legitimate sports cars.

Three models will be offered, starting with the 335 horsepower, supercharged 3.0-liter V-6 powered base F-Type. Next up the food chain is the F-Type S, which makes 375 horsepower from the same forced-induction 3.0-liter engine. If that’s still not fast enough for you, a supercharged 5.0-liter version, called the F-Type V8 S, will make around 495 horsepower.

Base models will run the dash from 0-60 mph in 5.1 seconds, on the way to a top speed of 161 mph. Stepping up to the F-Type S lowers the 0-60 mph time to 4.8 seconds, while raising top speed to 171 mph. Finally, the F-Type V8 S delivers a 0-60 mph time of 4.2 seconds, along with a top speed of 186 mph. Both F-Type S variants come with limited-slip differentials, but only the V-6 version’s is mechanical (the V-8 gets an electronic limited slip differential).

Jaguar says the interior design was inspired by the cockpit of a fighter jet, so controls are grouped by function and angled towards the driver. Don’t expect Jaguar’s usual gear selector knob in the F-Type; instead the eight-speed automatic transmission can be shifted via a console-mounted shifter or steering-wheel-mounted paddles. Sadly, a manual gearbox is not offered in any version.

Look for sales to begin next summer, with pricing to be announced closer to launch.
