Plymouth Superbird Inspires Dodge Challenger Rendering 6

Dodge Challengers have grasped a good chunk of the internet these days, especially in Hellcat and Demon guises, unleashed on drag strips, but this rendering is truly something different.

Inspired by the iconic Plymouth Superbird of the 1970s, RainPrisk has imagined it with an almost identical front end and a gigantic rear wing. Moreover, this Dodge Challenger rendering has other mods too, such as the double-vented hood with quick-release, new front bumper with repositioned fog lamps, side exhaust tips, and a set of very special wheels.

For a car made four decades ago, the original Plymouth Superbird had an impressive amount of power: 425 horses, to be more precise, coming from a 7.0-liter supercharged HEMI V8.

Nowadays, the most extreme version of the Dodge Challenger almost doubles it, being good for 840hp in the range-topping Demon model, with race fuel in the tank and the powertrain control module. This allows it to sprint from naught to 60mph (96km/h) in just 2.3 seconds, or 3.2sec faster than the Superbird.

Now, if you’re interested in an unrestored Plymouth Superbird, then you should get ready to spend a huge chunk of cash on it, because these examples usually retail in the neighborhood of $200,000, while properly maintained ones tend to double that price. This makes the $84,995 starting price of a new Challenger SRT Demon seem like a bargain, doesn’t it?

Jay Leno Goes Back In Time With Plymouth Superbird 3

When you think of American cars, you may immediately think of the Ford Mustang, Chevrolet Camaro, and Chevrolet Corvette. However, there is another performance car just as recognizable as these three. We are of course talking about the Plymouth Superbird.

The car is a beefed-up variant of the Plymouth Road Runner and despite only being produced for a single year, has cemented its place in automotive folklore and easily fetches well over six figures nowadays.

In a fitting way to begin 2018, Jay Leno recently jumped behind the wheel of a bright orange Superbird to discover first-hand what makes this performance car so special.

Sitting beneath the skin of the Superbird is a 7.0-liter Hemi V8 engine with four carburetors and delivering 425 hp to the rear wheels. For a car built in 1970, that’s a formidable amount of power.

However, it isn’t the horsepower number that makes the Superbird so special. Instead, it is the eye-catching bodywork. Characterized by a huge hood, elongated front overhang, and that iconic rear wing, the car remains as desirable as ever.

There’s Only One Plymouth Belmont Concept, And It’s Up For Auction 27

The 1950s saw American automakers especially, keen to move on to a brave new future in the aftermath of the Second World War, produce some fantastical concept cars.

That included Chrysler, which created the 1954 Plymouth Belmont dream car you see here.

With a fiberglass body on a standard Plymouth chassis, the Belmont could have been Chrysler’s rival to the Chevrolet Corvette and Ford Thunderbird – if only it had been approved for production.

Unfortunately it wasn’t, leaving this concept as the only example ever made. And while some of the others of its era were destroyed, this one was saved. In fact Virgil Exner – (Chrysler’s Vice President of Design) rescued it personally and took it home with him.

Now 60 years later, it’s been immaculately restored and is coming up for auction – complete with its original 4.0-liter V8 engine producing all of 157 horsepower and three-speed automatic transmission. (Again, this was 60 years ago.)

It’s one of the thousand-plus vehicles that Barrett-Jackson has consigned for its Scottsdale auction next month, where it’s sure to make one collector – just one – very happy indeed.
