Lamborghini kicked off their 50th Anniversary celebration in Miami yesterday with a 40-car parade down the streets of Miami and Miami Beach then later concluding at the Miami International Airport for an exotic runway drive of about 12 new Aventador LP700-4 Roadsters. President and CEO of Lamborghini, Stephan Winkelmann, along with Miami Beach Commissioner, Jerry Libbin, joined in the festivities. Aventador Roadsters raced down a closed runway at speeds over 180 mph, a record for Miami International Airport during the festivities.

Lamborghini was started in 1963 by Ferruccio Lamborghini who wanted a vehicle that was defined as a “refined grand touring car” to go head-to-head with Ferrari. During the 1970’s oil crises, the brand hit setbacks until Patrick and Jean Claude Mimran purchased the company to bring it back to life before selling to Chrysler in 1987. As you may know Audi AG owns the company and paved a new path for a truly exotic global car brand since 1999.

If you prefer your Italian supercar motoring experience al fresco, but find the Ferrari 458 Italia just a bit too… common, take heed: Lamborghini has just announced a roadster variant of its most impressive raging bull, the Aventador. Like it’s coupe sibling, the Aventador LP700-4 Roadster sports a 6.5-liter V-12, rated at 700 horsepower and driving all four wheels for traction. The combination is good enough to produce a 0-100 km/h (62 mph) time of 3.0 seconds, as well as a top speed of 217 mph.

The Aventador Roadster sports a two-tone paint scheme, with a main body color and a gloss black A-pillar, roof and C-pillar for contrast. Unlike the Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport, the Aventador’s two-piece roof panel can be stored on the car, broadening the range of top-down driving. For the full effect, the rear window can be dropped as well, allowing passengers to enjoy wind in their hair and the song of the meaty V-12 behind them. There’s a front-mounted, detachable wind deflector, too, so occupants can dial in just the right amount of cockpit turbulence.

Like the hard-top version, the Aventador Roadster is a kinder, gentler supercar, too. Cylinder deactivation ensures that as little fuel as possible is used at highway speeds, while a Stop & Start system relies on supercap high-performance capacitors to refire the engine as soon as the light goes green. Carbon fiber and carbon composites are used extensively in the car’s construction ensuring that the Roadster is as light and nimble as possible.

There’s no word yet on when deliveries will begin, but Lamborghini dealers worldwide will open their order books immediately. While U.S. pricing has yet to be announced, buyers in Europe can expect to pay 300,000 euros ($381,210) for the privilege of parking an Aventador Roadster in their garage.

Lamborghini Aventador Roadster To Wear Targa Roof: Report 8

If you were hoping the Lamborghini Aventador Roadster would pack a slick, power-retractable hardtop like Ferrari’s 458 Italia, it appears you’re out of luck. If reports from Italy’s Quattroroute are correct, the topless Aventador will come to market with a removable targa roof, similar to that used by Bugatti on the Veyron Grand Sport.

The Aventador Roadster’s top panels will be made from carbon fiber or carbon composite, and will be split in the middle for easy removal or deployment. That may make them small enough to carry on board the Aventador, eliminating the need to decide on topless motoring before leaving the garage (like the Veyron Grand Sport, whose roof can’t be stored on board the car).

As for the “why,” the answer is relatively simple: adding any kind of folding top, whether manual or powered, would add more weight and would require redesign of the Aventador’s intricate engine cover. Not only is such a redesign cost-prohibitive, but it also would added significantly to the car’s development time.

Assuming, of course, that the car actually exists. Lamborghini is neither confirming nor denying a topless Aventador, which means we’ll have to wait until the international auto show schedule resumes this fall before any official announcements are made.
