It is a proud day in America and at General Motors as the Chevrolet brand takes home both the 2014 North American Car and 2014 North American Truck/Utility of the Year awards with the new Corvette Stingray and Silverado. This announcement kicks off the 2014 Detroit Auto Show as our peers and auto journalists from all over the world embark on one of the most exciting and highly anticipated automotive shows of the year.

The bowtie brand keeps the forward momentum moving for General Motors as last year’s crown for North American Car of the year was awarded to the new Cadillac ATS. This year, while we thought the all-new Cadillac CTS, Mazda3 or the new Acura MDX was going to take the win home, we are just as happy with the outcome having the all-new Corvette Stingray and Silverado win.

To kick off the 2013 Detroit Auto Show, the announcement for 2013 North American Car of the Year sounds loud in naming the all-new 2013 Cadillac as the winner.

Cadillac had its work cut out to go head-to-head with the likings of the all-new Honda Accord and Ford Fusion in a battle to the finish line. With the introduction and astounding perception by many journalists, the Cadillac ATS edged out its competition while it followed somewhat of a formula familiar to those of us who recognize vehicles like the BMW 3 Series being such an influence on the automotive industry as a whole. With Cadillac focusing on that aspect, they brought the new 2013 ATS to fruition surprising many with its characteristic design and performance attitude.

“This is a very meaningful honor for the entire Cadillac team, especially the men and women who build the ATS in Lansing, Michigan, and our dedicated and talented designers and engineers,” said Bob Ferguson, GM vice president, global Cadillac. “A car like ATS is the result of incredible commitment and focus. That’s the only method for creating a great performing luxury car.”

The new 2013 Cadillac ATS attempts to offer up something for everyone with a total of 3 engine choices, all-wheel-drive options and a choice of a 6-speed automatic or 6-speed manual transmission.

The next move of course is for us enthusiast to expect an ATS-V performance version of the new 2013 North American Car of the Year.

Last year, for 2012 North American Car and Truck of the Year, The Hyundai Elantra and Land Rover Range Rover Evoque walked away with the crown. This year, things stay interesting as the non-profit NACTOY organization changed up the Truck category to include the Utility name filled by a Truck/Utility designation in place of the previous Truck name, possibly since there is such a utilitarian (crossover vehicle) segmented field of vehicles now. Only one body-on frame truck remains in the Truck/Utility category (RAM 1500).

2012 Detroit Auto Show: Hyundai Elantra Crowned 2012 North American Car of the Year 9

Hyundai has proven to be a major contender amongst brands that have previously dominated the automotive market on American soil. It has been rather evident in many of our previous test drive reviews of Hyundai vehicles that their cars stand out from the traditional crowd in a good way which is why the Hyundai Elantra has been named the 2012 North American Car of the Year.

The Hyundai Elantra, in its 5th generation, receives premium treatment rivaling that of midsized sedans wrapped up in a 40 mpg package at an excellent price point. Up against the other two finalists, the Volkswagen Passat and Ford Focus, the Hyundai Elantra takes home the win this year praised for its high-class interior, innovative styling and class-leading fuel consumption for both the manual and automatic transmission choices.

Last year’s winning choice for North American Car of the Year was the Chevrolet Volt.

The process of selection is from a panel made up of 50 accredited automotive journalists from around the United States and Canada.

Do you have any thoughts on the selection of the new Hyundai Elantra as the North American Car of the Year?

Each year, a panel of automotive journalists picks the one car (and one truck) that stands out above the rest of the herd in North America. Unlike awards given by individual media outlets, the NACTOY award is significant because it’s based on the consensus of 50 different viewpoints. To be considered, a vehicle must be all-new or substantially revised from a former model, must go on sale shortly after the announcement of the award and must have projected annual sales of 5,000 units for cars or 2,000 units for trucks.

From a list of 17 candidate automobiles, this year’s jury has selected the Ford Focus, the Hyundai Elantra and Volkswagen Passat as finalists for the North American Car of the Year. In the Truck category, finalists are the BMW X3, the Honda CR-V and the Range Rover Evoque. Final selections will be announced during the Detroit Auto Show, where the awards will be presented.

This year’s car list contained some interesting choices. Why the judges picked the Hyundai Elantra over the far-less-conventional Hyundai Veloster is beyond us, and we also have no idea why the new Passat beat out the new Beetle. In the truck category, pickings were somewhat slim, and we’re still scratching our heads over how the Mini Countryman made the truck list.

In retrospect, a glance at the eligible candidates shows that 2012 wasn’t a great year for new cars or new trucks. Let’s hope that 2013 brings a bit more innovation in terms of automotive design and engineering.
