Ever since lap times at the Nurburgring became a benchmark for a vehicle’s over-all performance, there has been a need to find a ‘benchmark’ track in the USA. Car and Driver, along with many other enthusiasts, think we already have such a track, the Virginia International Raceway (VIR).

Virginia International Raceway seems to be the ideal choice for testing a vehicle’s over-all performance dynamics. With the elevation changes, the Grand West Course’s 4.1 miles, 28 turns and proven effectiveness to challenge experienced race car drivers, VIR is the ideal home-grown Nurburgring. Car and Driver sets out to VIR for their Lightning Lap annual track torture test and brings us the official preview to the dueling test along with a run-down of the contenders. The new Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Coupe Black Series is a spiced up version of the already menacing C63 AMG Coupe. In traditional form, Benz Black Series vehicles get the special treatment with widened finders, track-focused suspension, and additional horsepower.

Having 517 horsepower on tap. The new C63 AMG Coupe Black Series should really be experienced on a track, which is why Benz is inviting participants to the Mercedes-Benz World Driving Experience on the Waybridge, Surrey (South East England) handling circuits. The promotional video below is a teaser of what children as young as 12 years old or adults will experience in the passenger seat of a new C63 AMG Coupe Black Series. Additionally, adults may strap behind the wheel of the new Black Series beast to truly get a feel for the purpose-built Benz.

The Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Black Series Coupe

If you think all Mercedes-Benz models are posh luxo-barges that coddle driver and passengers in isolated comfort, think again. The Mercedes-Benz AMG Black Series has always catered to a sightly different type of buyer, one who still wants Mercedes-Benz’s engineering expertise, but with a harder edge. Black Series cars have always been about performance and handling, not about about sheer comfort and luxury.

The latest Black Series model, the C63 AMG Coupe is no exception to this rule. Output gets bumped up from 451 horsepower and 443 pound-feet of torque in the C63 AMG to 510 hp and 457 lb-ft in the Black Series coupe, enabling it to sprint from 0-60 mph in just 4.2 seconds. To make sure the Black Series corners equally well, a coilover suspension is standard and the car’s track has been widened by 1.6 inches up front and 3.1 inches in the rear. To ensure that you can rein the car in, AMG has six-piston front calipers grabbing 15.4-inch brake rotors and four-piston calipers grabbing 14.2-inch rotors out back.

Inside, you’ll find a cockpit designed to lower lap times, not provide cross-country comfort. The steering wheel is wrapped in Dinamica for a sure grip, while the thickly-bolstered sport seats provide plenty of lateral support for high G-force cornering. If you’re lucky enough to snap up one of the limited edition coupes, you likely won’t be disappointed by its on-track behavior.

Mercedes-Benz wants you to know that its upcoming C63 AMG Coupe Black Series can be equipped for both track and street duty, depending upon the buyer’s preferences. If your ultimate goal is a car that will see most of its life on the street, with an occasional track day thrown in, the standard C63 AMG Coupe Black Series probably gives you all you really need. It comes with an adjustable suspension and a 6.3-liter V-8 that produces some 510 horsepower, which is good enough to get the bratwurst-burner from zero to sixty in just over four seconds.

If your ultimate goal is time attack, or even if you just want to be “the fast guy” at your local race track, Mercedes-Benz offers up an aerodynamic package for the new Black Series Coupe that includes a larger front splitter, front winglets and an adjustable carbon-fiber rear wing. The package is a bit much for a street car, if you ask us, but there’s no doubt that it will reduce front-end lift and boost rear downforce on the racetrack.

Mercedes will also offer up a Track Package that includes a rear differential cooler and specially developed Dunlop tires, optimized specifically for the Black Series Coupe. There’s a Carbon Fiber Package, too, which adds a more aggressive body kit than the car already comes with.

Look for the C63 AMG Coupe Black Series to hit dealerships in early 2012. Pricing hasn’t been set, but expect the limited production Black Series Coupe to command a heft premium over the C63 AMG Coupe’s base price of $61,430.
