Just like I could not resist posting this video, McLaren could not resist dramatizing their alleged victory of the all-new P1 rounding the Nurburgring in under 7 minutes. For reasons that most automotive enthusiasts completely understand, rounding the Ring in 7 minutes is a difficult feat and only a few vehicles have done such a thing, let alone production vehicles. McLaren has us mesmerized in this epic video of the new P1 and we are left guessing if they did the sub-7-minute lap around the Nurburgring. Check it and share our amazement as we try to believe the end of the video.

For some time now the Nurburgring has become the benchmark track for enthusiasts especially when shopping for that perfect new sports car. The new 2014 Camaro Z/28, a track focused vehicle that is said to be livable on the street took to the Nurburgring with all of this 505 naturally aspirated horsepower from its 7.0-liter LS7 V-8 to make it around in 7:37.47, mostly in the rain. If you do not know other sport car Ring times check this out… the 991 Porsche 911 Carrera S ran it in 7:37.9, the supercharged C6 Corvette ZR1 on Michelin Pilot Sport ZP run-flat tires took it in 7:38 and the Camaro ZL1 did it in 7.41:27.

The new 2014 Camaro Z/28 has got our full attention and we cannot wait to get to drive one. Hit up the full video of the run below and give credit where it is due.

If you were to compile a list of street-legal cars capable of lapping Germany’s Nürburgring Nordschleife in under 7:15, it would be a short one indeed. At 7:14.89, you’d find the Donkervoort D8 RS, at 7:14.64 you’d have the Lexus LFA with the Nürburgring package and at 7:12.13 you’d find the Dodge Viper ACR. Faster than that are the race cars thinly disguised as street cars, like the Gumpert Apollo Sport and the Radical SR8s.

Make a list of hybrids capable of lapping the ‘Ring in under 7:15, and the list includes but a single car. Yesterday, Porsche revealed on its Facebook page that the 918 Spyder had lapped the Nordschleife course in an impressive 7:14, shaving eight seconds off its previous best lap time of 7:22.

According to Porsche’s Facebook page, the car was equipped with the optional “Weissach Package,” although we have no idea what that may include. It was running on street-legal tires, which means that it likely could have gone even faster on race rubber.

It’s pretty clear that the 918 will live up to the performance expectations set by Porsche, but it’s still not clear if the car will deliver the impressive fuel economy (up to 78 mpg) that the German manufacturer originally claimed. We’ll find out when the car hits the market next year.

Mercedes-Benz’ new SLS AMG continues to get better with the introduction of a new more-powerful roadster version and now a new SLS AMG GT for the 2013 model year. The new SLS AMG GT is the now moniker for Benz’ halo car and to show off its improvements, it rips the Nurburgring just under 7 minutes 30 seconds.

Powered by a retuned 6.3-liter V8 with 591 horsepower, the new Benz SLS AMG GT accelerates from 0-60mph in under 3.7 seconds.

According to Autoblog, AMG chairman Ola Källenius uncovered the new lap time in recent talks. The new 2013 SLS AMG GT will go on sale in the U.S. November of this year with a price about $5,000 north of the outgoing model year coming in at $195,000 and $200,000 for the coupe and roadster respectfully.

When it comes to receiving recognition for a sports or exotic car’s performance capabilities, there is no better benchmark than the famous Nurburgring. Bugatti has reportedly set out to the Ring to lay down a new world record in the Veyron Super Sport.

As you probably already know, the Veyron Super Sport has already captured the title as the world’s fastest production car reaching speeds of 268 mph. With a new record lap time around the Nurburgring, the Veyron SS could beat the Radical SR8LM’s Ring time of 6:48. Can the 8.0-liter 16-cylinder quad-turbocharged 1200 horsepower – multimillion dollar supercar do it? Check out the exclusive video snippet of the Veyron SS running the Ring below and be sure to turn up your speakers. We will be sure to report any official times released within the weeks to come.

Video: BMW 1M Coupe Tails BMW M3 GTS Around the Ring 21

The new BMW 1M Coupe may not be the fastest sports car in a straight line. For many years enthusiasts realized straight-line performance was not BMW’s niche. However, we know that BMW knows a thing or two about perfect balance enabling their M-Motorsport vehicles to out-handle the competition around a racetrack.

In a recent Nurburgring run, automotive enthusiast Andre de Vries (known as ‘AdvEvo’ on many popular automotive forums incl. 1addicts.com), strapped himself in a new BMW 1M Coupe with JRZ suspension and Michelin PS2 tires to tail a new BMW M3 GTS around the ring to complete a Bridge to Gantry (11.9 miles) run. He claims to have posted a Bridge to Gantry run around the Green Hell in 7 minutes 45 seconds. For proof of the run, hit up the exclusive video below.

If you want solid proof that the 2013 Porsche Boxster S is faster than the car it replaces, ponder this: Autoblog.nl, via Motor Authority, says that Porsche ran the Nürburgring Nordschleife in 7:58. That’s a major improvement over the previous Boxster S, which took 8:10 to complete a lap. When it comes to the ‘Ring, twelve seconds isn’t just progress, it’s a quantum leap forward in performance.

Perhaps most impressive is that the time is a mere 20 seconds slower than the all-new 2012 Porsche 911 Carrera S, which managed a lap of the ‘Ring in 7:39. While we wouldn’t count the Boxster S as “inexpensive,” it is quite a bit less costly than its 911 stablemates. A 911 Carrera S now starts from around $96,400, while the new Boxster S begins at just below $61,000. From our perspective, that $35k buys a lot of track time.

It’s Official: The Lexus LFA Laps The Nürburgring In Under 7:15 8

Last week we brought you an unconfirmed report that a Lexus LFA, equipped with the $70,000 Nürburgring Package, lapped Germany’s Nürburgring Nordschleife in 7:14. It turns out that report was false; the car actually took 7:14.64 seconds to get from bridge to gantry, documented in the video below. Nonetheless, that’s a monumentally impressive time, and Akira Iida’s skill at wrestling the car through the corners at speed is a sight to behold.

The LFA used in the record attempt was a production car, with only a roll cage added for safety. Stock tires were used, not the DOT-approved competition tires favored by other brands during record attempts (Porsche and Corvette, we’re looking at you). The Lexus LFA is now officially the fourth-fastest production car around the ‘Ring, but we’ll cut it some slack since slots 1-3 are occupied by the Radical SR8LM (not our definition of a production car), the Radical SR8 (ditto) and the Gumpert Apollo Sport (closer to a production car, but where’s your nearest Gumpert dealer?). In our book, the LFA is the fastest real production car in the world, which gives Lexus bragging rights. For now, at least.

Unconfirmed: Lexus LFA Nürburgring Edition Laps The ‘Ring In 7:14 2
Posted by Kurt Ernst in Automotive, Kurt, LEXUS, Lexus LFA, News, Nurburgring Lap Times, supercars on 09 2nd, 2011

Officially, the fastest a Lexus LFA Nürburgring Edition has ever lapped the Nürburgring Nordschleife is in 7:22.85. That’s an amazing performance, and it makes the car faster than a Porsche 911 GT2 RS (on stock tires) or a Pagani Zonda F Clubsport. That time is over fifteen seconds faster than a standard LFA, proving that the Nürburgring Edition’s improved aerodynamics, modest power gain and faster shifting can translate to real-world benefits with the right driver on the right track.

According to EVO’s Chris Harris, there’s about to be a new record announced for the Lexus LFA around the ‘Ring. It seems that Lexus driver Akira Iida, who’d set the previous lap record, just knocked off a time of 7:14 from bridge to gantry, besting his old time by a mind-warping 8.85 seconds. On a track where drivers struggle to shave tenths of a second off their lap times, finding nearly nine seconds is a truly remarkable feat.

If Iida’s lap time is validated, it would make the Lexus LFA Nürburgring Edition the fourth-fastest production vehicle to ever lap the ‘Ring. In fact, if you discount the Radical SR8 laps (because to be honest, they’re street legal race cars), only the Gumpert Apollo Speed is faster. It would also make Lexus the fastest major manufacturer around the ‘Ring, since 7:14 even beats a Porsche 911 GT2 RS on Michelin Pilot Sport Cup tires.

We’ll keep you posted as more details on Iida’s record lap come out.
