Baby Driver Returns To Subaru WRX To Pull Off Snowy Drifts 10

Ansel Elgort, the star in the film “Baby Driver,” kept one of the six Subaru WRX sedans that were used during the filming of the movie. Instead of putting the WRX away, Elgort took to Twitter to showcase some snowy drifts.

As the wheelman in the film, Elgort received tons of training to ensure that he could actually perform the stunts in the movie’s chase scenes, which is probably why we loved “Baby Driver.” Apparently, Elgort remembered some of his training, because the drifts he pulled off during New York City’s recent snowstorm were on point.

According to Motor1, making “Baby Driver” took six WRX sedans. One of the sedans was converted to rear-wheel drive and fitted with an upgraded differential to keep the smoky drifts going. That vehicle, even with 158,000 miles on the clock, sold for $69,100 on eBay.

While that vehicle is probably stored away somewhere, Elgort begged the studio to take one of the WRX sedans home. After roughly a year of begging, Sony finally obliged his request, giving the actor the Subaru for his birthday.

Clearly, Elgort’s still enjoying being behind the wheel of a Subaru.

Subaru Says Next WRX Will Look Like Viziv Concept 18
Dec
Posted by Brad Anderson in Reports, Subaru, Subaru Concepts, Subaru WRX on 12 18th, 2017

Subaru says that the next-generation WRX will bear a close resemblance to the Viziv Performance concept unveiled a couple of months ago.

Speaking with Autocar, Subaru design chief Mamoru Ishii said that the positive reception to the Viziv has encouraged the carmaker not to mess with the design significantly when the next WRX hits the road.

“Such a car brings lots of expectation, from within the company and from our customers. What we know is that our customers’ lifestyles are changing and we have to respond to that. The question was whether we have done that in a correct way with this concept.

“For instance, we know that autonomous and connective technology are coming, and for many customers that is great, but we don’t think that is what all of our customers want. For some, driving pleasure is still very important and that is what we are exploring,” Ishii said.

According to Ishii, customers can expect to see the next WRX adopting a similar body shape, bold arches, and bonnet scoop to the concept.

Subaru intends on launching the next-generation WRX in 2020 and will build the sedan around the Subaru Global Platform. Interestingly, Ishii revealed that the brand has some flexibility when it comes to what powertrain it will offer for the WRX, indicating that something other than a boxer engine is a real possibility.

Subaru BRZ tS And WRX STI Type RA Pricing Announced For U.S. 14
Dec

Subaru has released pricing information for the limited edition BRZ tS and WRX STI Type RA.

Starting in alphabetical order, the BRZ tS will cost $33,495 when it arrives at U.S. dealerships next spring. That’s a hefty premium over the standard model but the tS has been tuned by STI and it features an aerodynamic body kit, an adjustable carbon fiber rear spoiler, and 18-inch wheels with Michelin Pilot Sport tires.

The sporty styling continues in the cabin as drivers with find leather and Alcantara upholstery as well as red contrast stitching. Other highlights include red seat belts, a frameless rearview mirror, and a 7-inch infotainment system with GPS navigation.

While the model eschews a turbocharged engine, it has been equipped with new draw stiffeners, a V-brace, and a returned suspension that features SACHS dampers and coil springs. There’s also a high-performance braking system with Brembo rotors.

The WRX STI Type RA, on the other hand, will cost a whopping $48,995. It features a modestly revised exterior with a carbon fiber roof, a carbon fiber rear wing, and 19-inch BBS forged alloy wheels.

Interior revisions are minor but include Recaro front seats and an ultrasuede steering wheel. Elsewhere, there’s red contrast stitching and an individually numbered plaque on the center console.

Motivation is provided by a turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine which has been equipped with a cold air intake, a high-performance exhaust system, an optimized ECU, and new pistons. Thanks to these changes, the car produces 310 hp (231 kW) which is a minor an increase of 5 hp (3 kW). The engine is connected to an upgraded six-speed manual transmission with a short-throw shifter.

Speaking of performance, the WRX STI Type RA has Bilstein dampers, an active torque vectoring system, and a unique Multi-Mode Vehicle Dynamics Control system. Drivers will also appreciate the car’s high-performance Brembo braking system with cross-drilled rotors and 6-piston monoblock front calipers.

Subaru WRX STI To Be Discontinued In Europe From 2018 22
Nov
Posted by Brad Anderson in Reports, Subaru, Subaru WRX, Subaru WRX STI on 11 22nd, 2017

Subaru Germany has confirmed that production of the WRX STI for the European market will be discontinued in early summer 2018.

As a result, the 2018 WRX STI will be the final model year of the sports sedan, marking the end of a strong 17-year production run for Europe.

In a statement, managing director of Subaru Deutschland Christian Amenda said strict emissions regulations in the continent make it impossible for the STI to survive.

“The WRX STI has a long and successful motorsport history and enjoys a small but loyal fan base. The increasingly stringent emission regulations in Europe make the conditions for such a classic athlete more difficult, which is why the manufacturer decided to stop production.

“As of early summer 2018, no new models will be produced for the European market, but sales will be extended until at least the end of 2018, with sufficient pre-orders. Of course, we want to give the four-time class winner of the 24 Hours Nürburgring Nordschleife a fitting farewell, details are currently being worked out,” Amenda said.

Despite its popularity around the world, the WRX STI has never been a big seller for Subaru in Germany. In fact, the marque has only sold 859 units there since 2011.

Last week
, we received word that Subaru is still assessing the future of the WRX STI in other markets. It is possible the next-generation model will adopt some form of electrification.

Your 2015 Subaru WRX’s Subwoofers May Start A Fire 6
Nov
Posted by Cristian Gnaticov in Recalls, Reports, Subaru, Subaru WRX on 11 6th, 2017

Listening to music in your 2015 Subaru WRX, equipped with the optional trunk-mounted subwoofer, could have disastrous consequences.

Back in January this year, the Japanese automaker discovered that items in the trunk might rub against the subwoofer wiring, moving it out of its fixed position.

If the wire is exposed to the metal frame, it could result in an electrical short, causing the integrated circuit in the subwoofer amplifier to be damaged. In extreme cases, the damaged circuit might create a continuous electrical current into the subwoofer, causing it to overheat, and increasing the risk of a fire. Turning off the sound system reportedly prevents the defect from occurring.

This condition affects 9,178 units of the Subaru WRX, from the 2015MY, in North America, put together from January 17, 2014, through April 9, 2015.

Dealers have been already informed about the problem, and technicians will inspect the wire, installing a wire retainer clip if necessary, or going as far as replacing the entire subwoofer, depending on how much damage is spotted.

The repairs/replacements will be made completely free of charge to the owners, who will hear from Subaru soon, if they haven’t already, as the recall campaign has begun on October 31.
