Ever since lap times at the Nurburgring became a benchmark for a vehicle’s over-all performance, there has been a need to find a ‘benchmark’ track in the USA. Car and Driver, along with many other enthusiasts, think we already have such a track, the Virginia International Raceway (VIR).

Virginia International Raceway seems to be the ideal choice for testing a vehicle’s over-all performance dynamics. With the elevation changes, the Grand West Course’s 4.1 miles, 28 turns and proven effectiveness to challenge experienced race car drivers, VIR is the ideal home-grown Nurburgring. Car and Driver sets out to VIR for their Lightning Lap annual track torture test and brings us the official preview to the dueling test along with a run-down of the contenders. Oddity De jour: Nissan Juke R vs. Porsche GT2 RS – Video 23

As an automotive enthusiast, you have probably seen your fair share of odd matches and vehicle comparisons. An oddity that tends to show up every once in a while, is the comparison against the infamous Nissan Juke R. The Nissan Juke R is Nissan’s 4,000-pound Frankenstein creation berthed from the GT-R’s drivetrain and force-fed V6 engine. Car and Driver is the latest outlet to pit the Juke R against a red-hot item. This time that item is the new Porsche 911 GT2 RS.

With the 911 GT2 RS being the most powerful road-going Porsche ever built, you would think that it demolishes the Juke R from the get-go. However, you must consider how the Juke R has so far trumped king over many exotics mainly due to its remarkable GT-R-sourced drivetrain and twin-turbo V6. Hit up the Car and Driver video below of Jethro Bovingdon to see if the Juke R’s hype is enough to take down the all-mighty Porsche.

Video: Euro Car and Driver Thrashes Ariel Atom 300 on the Track 28

The Ariel Atom is undoubtedly the vehicle to push the limits of automotive handling dynamics to the brink of unbelief. With 300 horsepower and suspension tuned by Lotus, the lightweight Ariel Atom is good for 0-60mph runs in under 3 seconds. Of course you could always opt for the 500 horsepower version and attempt to desecrate your body with much success.

Car and Driver’s European correspondent, Jethro Bovingdon, recently took the street legal Atom out on the track proving that it is the ultimate track machine. Check out the exclusive video below and enjoy!

Rumor Mill Stirs Up More Chevrolet SS Performance Sedan Details 4

Chevrolet Caprice Police Interceptor – GM Zeta Platform

From recent reports, it seems Chevrolet has something up their sleeves hinting towards a new “SS” branded name potentially for an upcoming rear-wheel-drive performance sedan. We already know of a new Holden Commodore being the basis for Chevrolet’s new Caprice police interceptor, but what about a consumer version of what may be a new Chevy SS model?

New repots have surfaced about the a trademark application made for the “SS” name, in addition to OnStar accidently confirming a “SS Performance” name on their Mobile App RemoteLink site. Now, the rumor mill is spinning faster than ever with new speculations from Car and Driver stating that a new Chevrolet SuperSport Sedan will have the underpinnings of the Zeta platform powered by the 6.2-liter V8 from the Camaro. Moreover, GM’s new 3.6-liter V6 engine found in the new 2012 Buick LaCrosse is rumored to be part of this new Chevy SuperSport Sedan’s lower trim levels with 320 horsepower.  As you may already know, the Zeta platform is the basis of the current Camaro. A sedan from Chevrolet based on the Zeta platform will most certainly be rear-wheel-drive and a true competitor against other performance sedans. In a way, you can think of this as the return of the Pontiac G8… and most enthusiasts know how much of a prize vehicle the G8 was and still is today.

To further support the mysterious Chevy SS Sedan speculations, a new model from Chevrolet is expected to compete in the 2013 NASCAR season, which happens to be the same year that this new “SS” model should be launched. Sounds like we have it all figured out, at least for now.
