Dear Kia: Build The Track’ster Concept, And We’ll Eat Our Vegetables 9
Feb

Kia's Track'ster concept.

Remember when you were a child, and you wanted a particular gift for Christmas, or a birthday? Remember how you promised to clean your room, wash dad’s car, brush your teeth, eat your vegetables and even be nice to your sister? That’s kind of how we are with Kia’s Chicago stunner, the Track’ster concept. Just tell us what we have to do in order for you to put this into production, and consider it done.

Loosely based on the pedestrian Kia Soul, the Track’ster concept loses two doors, gets a five-inch wider track and a stretched wheelbase. Power comes from Kia’s 2.0-liter turbo four, which puts out 250 horsepower in Track’ster trim, and gets mated to a six-speed manual gearbox. Power goes to all four wheels, and the Brembo brakes are the very definition of “overkill.” Up front, six-pot calipers grab 14 inch rotors, while the rear gets four-piston calipers and 13.6 inch rotors.

Kia has no plans to put the Track’ster into production, but quite frankly we’re not listening. We know it would be a limited-appeal vehicle, and would have to sell at a ridiculous sticker price, but that doesn’t matter because we still want one. The Track’ster is in the same spirit as cars like the Renault R5 Turbo2, the Ford Fiesta SHOgun and even the Smartbusa. It’s been a long time since anyone has built something this crazy, and we can’t think of a better way for Kia to step up its reputation among enthusiast drivers.

Build the Track’ster, and the buyers will come.

The upcoming North American Auto Show in Detroit is sure to be a big hit showcasing some of the most anticipated vehicles for the upcoming model years. One concept that we are eager to see is the recently announced and teased Lexus LF-LC Concept. Road & Track was the first to give everyone a look at the new Lexus LF-LC concept in its full-form. Just after Road & Tracks reveal, Lexus drops an official image of the LF-LC Concept.

We are still not sure where the new Lexus LF-LC Concept would be positioned “if” it makes its way to production. Quite possibly it could be a new Lexus LS-based coupe that will rival the BMW 6 Series and Benz SL class. Either way, what we see here is very intriguing to say the least.

Lexus LF-LC Press Release

Lexus to Unveil Sport Coupe Concept Vehicle at North American International Auto Show in Detroit

TORRANCE, Calif., Dec. 21, 2011 – Taking the new Lexus design direction one step further, the LF-LC 2+2 sport coupe will be unveiled at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit at 1:25 p.m. Eastern time on January 9, 2012.

“Crafted from a clean sheet of paper at the request of Lexus headquarters in Japan, the LF-LC blends both high technology and organic shapes to connect the driver to the machine,” said Mark Templin, Lexus group vice president and general manager. “The clean lines of the vehicle emphasize motion, creating a distinctive look for this futuristic sport coupe.”

Conceived as a design exercise to explore the future of Lexus design, the LF-LC was created at the company’s Calty design studio in Newport Beach, Calif.

Lexus Teases New Concept For Detroit Auto Show 13

Lexus' newest concept, to be revealed at January's Detrroit Auto Show

We’ve all heard the joke that Lexus, translated into Japanese, actually means “Buick.” While cars like the IS-F are surprisingly quick and agile, the brand is still associated more with luxury and comfort than with performance. Even the unattainable LFA has done little to give Lexus credibility among enthusiasts, probably due to the car’s limited availability and stratospheric price. Sure it’s fast, luxurious and high-tech, but is it really worth over four times the price of a Nissan GT-R?

Lexus knows it has an identity crisis, and the Japanese luxury brand is working hard to inject more sport into its product line. Take the image seen above, which Lexus has released as a teaser of a new “concept vehicle” to be shown at the upcoming Detroit Auto Show. There are zero details known about the concept, aside from the fact that it represents the “new design direction” for Lexus. If that’s the case, we say good for Lexus; while conservative styling may have brand loyalists returning to showrooms, it isn’t drawing in many new buyers.

Expect more teaser images from Lexus in the coming weeks, and we’ll be sure to give you the details on its new concept as soon as we hear them.

Could Honda’s EV-STER Concept Become A Tesla For The Masses? 30

Honda's EV-STER electric roadster concept.

One of the highlights of this week’s Tokyo Motor Show is the debut of the Honda EV-STER electric roadster concept. Bold styling sets the EV-STER apart from the rest of the Honda lineup, and it may be an indication that Honda is listening to critics who find its current product line boring and uninspired.

Honda isn’t saying that the EV-STER will definitely be built, but it would keep with the company’s goal of being a “green” automaker. According to the details published by Honda, the EV-STER is rear drive (and, presumably, rear-motor), uses carbon materials to reduce weight and has a maximum range of nearly 100 miles on a charge. Honda claims the EV-STER will hit 37 miles per hour (60 km/h) in five seconds, before topping out at a maximum speed of 100 miles per hour. The 10 kW lithium-ion batteries can be recharged in less than 6 hours on household current, or less than 3 hours on 240V.

Honda's EV-STER electric roadster concept.

While the performance may not be enough to attract those who favor speed over saving the planet, it’s a starting point. If the EV-STER is built, tuners will find a way to add more powerful motors, hack the controller to send more voltage to the motors and even find ways to add additional batteries for more power or increased range. Tuning is tuning, regardless of whether you’re talking about an electric motor or an internal combustion engine.

If Honda builds the EV-STER, it has to be priced attractively (say, below $30k) and it has to handle like a true sports car. The CR-Z “sports hybrid” proved that very few buyers want a car that’s neither fast enough to be entertaining nor fuel-efficient enough to be green, and Honda can’t afford to make the same mistake twice.

The brand new Land Rover DC100 Sport was unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show this week. The DC100 Sport was a surprise reveal alongside the much anticipated DC100 and is one of two concepts that the Land Rover team have confirmed will be put into production for 2015.  Both were revealed to gauge public interest and gather feedback to give Land Rover an idea of which direction to go in for 2015 to avoid rushing into a replacement.

In comparison to the silver three door 4X4 DC100 demonstrating ‘capability and versatility’, the DC100 Sport is an open-air pick-up version in bright yellow-orange and is described as ‘an active expression of freedom and leisure’.

Under the hood, both concepts use 2.0-litre four-cylinder engines driving all four wheels through a stop/start-equipped eight-speed automatic. However, while the DC100 has a diesel engine, the DC100 Sport has a petrol engine.

Both concepts have a new automatic terrain response system that automatically sets all the driver assist systems sensing the wheel travel, wheelslip, the texture of the ground and a sonar depth-sounder for driving through rivers.

Ford’s Fastest Fiesta Debuts In Frankfurt 14

Ford's Fiesta ST concept. Image: Ford Motor Company

If you like the idea behind the Ford Focus ST, but wanted something a little smaller and lower priced, you may be in luck. Ford is debuting the all-new Fiesta ST concept at the Frankfurt Auto Show, and word is that the project has already been given a green light for production. That’s the good news: the bad news is that the markets the car will be sold in still haven’t been finalized. If you want to see a Fiesta ST in the U.S., now is the time to let Ford know.

Like its big brother the Focus ST, the Fiesta ST gets its power from an EcoBoost engine. In the Fiesta, this is a 1.6-liter engine good for some 177 horsepower and 177 ft-lb of torque. That may not sound like much, but remember that the Fiesta has less than 2,500 pounds of mass to accelerate. Ford claims a respectable 0 to 100 kph time of “under seven seconds,” on the car’s way to a top speed of 135 miles per hour. More good news? The car will only be available with a six-speed manual transmission.

Image: Ford Motor Company

Outside, the Fiesta ST takes its styling cues from the Fiesta RS WRC cars (which come with 600 horsepower ands AWD, but cost around $500,000 each). There’s a body kit, a rear diffuser with dual exhausts, 17-inch wheels, widened wheel arches and a lower stance. The car gets a sport suspension, which most likely translates to lower springs, stiffer dampers and sway bars front and rear.

Inside, expect the Fiesta ST to take styling hints from the Focus ST, including seat inserts that match the car’s exterior color. Driver and front seat passenger get Recaro seats, which should ensure front seat occupants are comfortable and anchored even during spirited driving.

There’s no word yet on pricing, but expect the Fiesta ST to top out the Fiesta range if it’s offered for sale in America. What’s your take? Is the under-$30,000 Ford Focus ST, with its 247 horsepower EcoBoost engine, enough for the U.S. market, or is there room for an under-$24,000 Ford Fiesta ST as well? Let us know what you think.

maseratisuv Maserati SUV Concept Leaked

Just days before its official unveiling at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show, images of the new SUV concept from Maserati have been leaked onto the Web.

The image, that appeared in an online pocket guidebook for the show, came with the description that the new SUV model due for launch in 2013 is expected to feature a 4.7-litre V8 engine under the bonnet producing around 335kW of power. The engine is also likely to be backed up by an eight-speed ZF automatic transmission. However, the SUV will be tuned more for speed than actual heavy off-road duty.

The luxury off road vehicle based on the Jeep Grand Cherokee, will have new bodywork and a bespoke interior. The image showcases typical Maserati design features from the latest models with the vertical slat front grille, fender vents, and angular headlights.

The price is yet to be revealed but it’s expected to be priced higher than its top spec Jeep counterpart at an estimated amount of $80,000 to $100,000.

vaux use Vauxhaull Reveals Electric Car

Just after the announcement of the Volkswagen Nils concept car, comes the surprising revelation of Vauxhaull’s very own electric city concept car. The car which has yet to be named, will join the Nils on the stands at the upcoming Frankfurt Motor Show.

This tiny two seater that weighs under 500kg has batteries that give a 95km range and can take the car to about 120km/h at top speed which makes it suitable for urban driving.

The dramatic exterior design appears to have drawn inspiration from the hybrid Ampera up front, with the rear resembling that of a motorbike. Elongated LED headlights, a prominent grille and a sweeping glass roof contribute to the sharp and striking styling.

Vauxhall claims that the new EV city car has both “production potential” and could “revolutionise urban transport, especially for younger drivers and those on a very tight budget”.

jaguar Jaguar C X16 Concept Car

The Jaguar’s teaser sketch of a sub XK production concept revealed last month is now officially the new Jaguar C-X16 and it certainly is a beauty.  The new concept, that will be revealed at next week’s Frankfurt Motor Show, is a two-seat, rear-wheel-drive sports coupe built on an aluminium architecture and offers perfect 50:50 weight distribution. The car is the smallest Jaguar has built since 1954 and the XK 120. At 4445mm long, this compact car is sure to see a convertible roadster version in due course.

Up front, the car is powered by a supercharged 3.0-litre V6 putting out 376 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque.  There is also the addition of a “Push to Pass” hybrid system controlled through a steering wheel-mounted button.  Integrated into the eight-speed gearbox is an electric motor generator mounted behind the seats that draws power from a battery pack that provides 95bhp and 173lb ft of power.

According to Ian Callum, Jaguars design chief, “Jaguars have always been dramatically different. With the C-X16 we have moved the current award-winning design language on to the next generation, creating a car that is the very essence of future Jaguar performance.”

The final product, very similar to what you see here, will likely go on sale in late 2012 at a price of £55,000.

There is a new cat on the prowl, dubbed the Jaguar C-X16 Concept Car, ready to pounce on the competition in the looks and technology department.

The new Jaguar C-X16 Concept car features the future of vehicle technology that will incorporate advanced hybrid powertrains. The C-X16 Concept car is powered by a prototype 3.0-liter supercharged engine with 375 horsepower and 332 ft-lbs. of torque mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission. The new 3.0-liter is said to be a completely new creation aside from the supercharged V6 powermill that is found in European versions of the 2012 Jaguar XJ.

Alongside of the C-X16’s V6 engine is an electric motor good for 94 horsepower and 173 ft-lbs. of torque. To put the icing on the cake, this kitty will roar at the push of a KERS (Formula 1 inspired Kinetic Energy Recovery System) “push to pass” button on the steering wheel. Think of it as a temporary turbo-boost that releases an extra punch from the electric motor.

To top off this kitty’s performance stats, the two-seater concept car is good for a governed top speed of 186 mph and 0-62 mph time of 4.4 seconds.

The new Jaguar C-X16 is expected to be on hand at the upcoming Frankfurt Motor Show next week. Until then, we will keep on drooling over these hot images of one of the best-looking cats around.

Citroen Tubik Concept Car 6

Posted by Kelly Levinsohn in Automotive News, Citroen, Concept Car, Concept car news, Green Auto, Popular on 09 6th, 2011

According to Citroen, it’s time that travel became meangingful again and the French auto manufacturer intends to do just this with its new Tubik concept, a modern take on the MPV. Citroen describes the Tubik as “a high-tech executive shuttle based on one key idea: travel should be fun”. The futuristic nine- seater people mover draws inspiration from the Type H or TUB (French slang for a front-wheel drive commercial vehicle) van from Citroen’s auto history.

The interior showcases seats covered in purple leather and felt that can swivel and be re-positioned to create a lounge and/or sleeping area. The passenger area also comes fitted with an HD TV screen and surround sound. Although there is plenty of lighting, there is a significant lack of windows in the passenger area, which for some may not be ideal. The driver’s seat resembles that of a circular pod almost completely separated from the rest of the vehicle. The quirky design extends to the passenger door which opens much like the door of a private jet where the top half lifts up while the bottom half drops to form a step.

The Tubik is powered by PSA’s new Hybrid4 system with a 160bhp 2.0-litre diesel engine up front and the battery/electric motor gubbins generating another 37bhp out the back. All four of the 22 inch wheels can be driven in 4wd mode.

The Tubik concept is set to be unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

Volkswagen has designed a new concept electric pod car that will be revealed at the Frankfurt Motor Show taking place in just under two weeks. The Nils, ideal for a single commuter, is a possible solution for crowded urban roads. Developed with the German Transport Ministry and designed to be environmentally sustainable is capable of travelling up to approximately 137km an hour with a range between charges of about 65km and weighs just 19kg. The single seater is just 3040mm long – half a metre shorter than an Up – and sits lower than a Porsche 911.

The battery has a capacity of 5.3kWh and is fully charged after two hours with a three point plug.

The design, based around a light but sturdy aluminum spaceframe, features gullwing style doors and free-standing wheels which makes it both fun to drive and friendly on the environment.

R&D chief Ulrich Hackenberg said: “Nils is anything but a dry-run exercise and is very realistic. Despite its compact dimensions, the concept fulfils all safety requirements for contemporary vehicles.”
