Even though today’s media culture has up-rooted itself from the traditional paper-print media, some of the original automotive publications remain to be a valid staple in determining benchmark vehicles. Car and Driver, who has properly rooted themselves on the internet and in digital form, have named their list of 2013 10Best Cars.

For many years manufacturers have prided themselves in making Car and Driver’s 10Best list. Some have taken the crown home many times for the same vehicle for over a decade. Having a consistent base for testing and giving virtually the same vehicles lineup a chance to join the elite has always been part of the 10Best car competition.

Below is a full list of all of Nominees as well as the winners for Car and Driver’s 2013 10Best Cars.

Volkswagen U.K. Shows Us The Evolution Of The GTI 23
Dec
Posted by Kurt Ernst in Automotive, Kurt, video, Volkswagen, Volkswagen GTI on 12 23rd, 2011

In honor of the Volkswagen GTI’s 35th anniversary, Volkswagen U.K. has produced a short video showing the six generations of GTI on the track. Sadly, there isn’t much on-track footage, and you never get to see the cars running at anything resembling speed, but it is cool to see the entire family gathered for a portrait and video nonetheless.

The original GTI, launched in 1976, weighed in at under 1,800 pounds and packed a 1.6-liter, four-cylinder engine good for around 108 horsepower. While the first GTI wasn’t particularly quick in a straight line, it was a nimble car in corners, prompting the joke that GTI stood for “Get Tickets In.” We wouldn’t get a GTI in the United States until 1983, and emission regulations limited our version to 90 horsepower despite the larger 1.8-liter engine, but the car was still quick enough to be entertaining back in the day.

The sixth generation GTI, launched in 2010, now weighs in at just over 3,000 pounds, but packs a turbocharged, 2.0-liter four good for a (conservatively rated) 200 horsepower. Handling has improved through the years as well, and today’s GTI is a remarkably competent hot hatch that’s more than capable of running with the competition.

Like the Porsche 911 or the Ford Mustang, the GTI has become an automotive icon, offering both substantial performance and value for the money. We can’t know what the GTI will look like 35 years from now, but it’s more than likely VW will still be building its hot hatch.

Dayne Ferris was revealed as the winner of a one-of-a-kind modified VW GTI valued at R500 000 at a star studded event at Johannesburg’s Montecasino. The 26 year-old won the car by entering BP’s popular online Ultimate Ride competition. The event was attended by a number of local celebrities as well as well known names in the motorsport industry, including local rally ace Gugu Zulu, who came together to celebrate South Africa’s growing passion and excitement for cars.

Ferris was one of more than 45 000 fans who competed for the exclusive prize over a six month period that included gamers customizing virtual rides, racing against others online and judging others’ cars.

BP’s Ultimate Ride creation was modified by the best customizing crews in the country with features that include the special Viper ultimate exhaust conversion for maximum gains in power, torque and reduction in turbo lag, an unmatched hot hatch sporty tone, a full JL Audio system with 2 x 12”WO- 4ohm on a G1700 mono-block and specially installed brake calipers with a signature BP themed coating which has heat transfer properties that cool down the calipers. Other modifications include custom-made silicone hoses for the engine, one-of-a-kind 19 inch wheels with a custom-made green strip and Pro Kit suspension with sway bars for better handling and lower seating.

After winning, Ferris said: “I have always had a passion for cars and can’t wait to hit the tar with my new wheels, and it’s certainly not just going to be driven on Sundays”. Ferris’s biggest problem will be keeping the keys away from his friends who already have their eyes on his brand new ride.

Good News, V-Dub Fans: We May Be Getting The GTI Edition 35 3

We Americans get cheated out of a lot of cool cars on this side of the pond. We don’t get the Ford Focus RS, we’re still waiting on the Fiat Abarth 500 and Audi has said, “nein,” to importing the RS3. If you want some good news for a change, Car and Driver is reporting that we will get the special edition GTI that VW showed off at this week’s Wörthersee Festival.

Dubbed the GTI Edition 35, the car was built to commemorate the 35th anniversary of the GTI’s launch in Europe. That number’s not relevant for the United States, since we didn’t see the GTI on these shores until 1983, and VW isn’t going to build a separate “28th anniversary” model just for us. What is relevant is the car’s specs, which include a 235 PS (for Pferdestärke, or German horsepower) variant of the 2.0-liter turbo four. That translates into nearly 232 horsepower, which is 32 more than the current GTI, and the motor also puts out 221 ft lb of torque. Buyers can opt for a six speed manual gearbox or VW’s superb DSG dual-clutch manual automatic.

The rest of the GTI Edition 35 package is mostly trim items, like new wheels, tinted glass, LED running lights and “35” badging on the seats and door sills. Since VW still hasn’t officially confirmed we’re getting the car, there’s no way to estimate how many Edition 35 cars will be imported. In Europe, pricing for the limited edition GTI starts at around $5,000 more than a base GTI; if we use the same formula for the U.S., that would put the price of the Edition 35 at around $29,000, or on par with their loaded “Autobahn” GTI.

Volkswagen has released the new 2012 Jetta GLI. The car features typical German refinement and performance – and also strikes a balance between the two. The trapezoidal headlights and the front grille add to the looks, cooling air intake and tray-shaped front spoiler tucked beneath the front bumper round off the macho look.

Coming to the rear, the smoked taillights in two sections grab the attention along with dual exhaust tips. The tyres are available with 17” or 18” alloys.

The interior has sport bucket seats with red stitching, a sport flat-bottom steering wheel with red stitching, the GLI logo and aluminum accents. Available in cloth or V-Tex Leatherette the car also features sleek alloy pedals, shifter, dash and door trim.

Luxury features include 6.5″ touch screen premium VIII radio with Bluetooth and iPod connectivity, one-touch up/down power on all four windows, standard multifunction display (for vehicle status, trip, radio and navigation information when equipped). While dual zone climate control, RNS-315 navigation system and keyless entry with pushbutton start are available as options.

The sedan gets the award winning 2.0 L turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine mated to a six-speed manual transmission, producing 200 hp and 207 lb-ft of torque @ 1700 rpm. The new model is comparatively lighter to the old model.

The new Jetta GLI should return 31 mpg highway with the manual and 32 mpg highway with the DSG automatic.

Also provided are Track tuned four-way Independent Performance Suspension, DSG automatic gearbox with steering wheel mounted paddle shifters and four wheel disc brakes with floating red calipers.

XDS cross differential system that debuted on the Volkswagen GTI, that helps prevent inside wheel spin during cornering have also found its way into the Jetta GLI.

ESP, tyre pressure monitoring, VW’s Intelligent Crash Response System, driver and front passenger airbags, side airbags in front and side curtain protection airbags in front and rear.

The car is sold in three models, entry level Jetta GLI at $23,495, GLI Autobahn at $25,545 and the top of the range Jetta GLI Autobahn at $26,445.
