It is that time of the year again when we all pile in front of the big screen TV, indulge in unhealthy snacks, watch the Super Bowl, and laugh out loud at some of the most expensive and hilarious commercials known to man. Volkswagen has been at the forefront of entertaining us during the Super Bowl for many years now and the tradition is staying strong as they release one of their game day commercials where every time a VW hits 100,000 miles a German engineer gets his wings. Yeah, we know where that came from – this is pretty funny though!

Sometimes it seems the commercials during the Super Bowl each year are in direct competition with each other just like the two teams striving to take home the Lombardi Trophy. It is even more evident with automotive commercials, such as the one Audi will debut during Super Bowl XLVII featuring the all-new Audi S6 and a slightly insecure teenager about to embark on his Senior Prom journey. We have to say, this is a good depart from the abused vampire-themed genre of commercials in previous years. This one is pretty darn good. Enjoy!

BMW has jumped into the Super Bowl Commercial Game to score big with about 6 spots advertising the new 3 Series. Many of them are focused on new features offered on the new BMW 3 Series and the idea of BMW building only one thing, The Ultimate Driving Machine. These commercials are pretty clever and are sure to give other automotive ads a run for the money during Super Bowl XLVI. Enjoy!

And In Super Bowl Ads, It’s Kia For The Win 2

We knew that Kia would have a hard time topping last year’s Super Bowl epic, which featured everything from a fake motorcycle cop through Optima-worshipping Mayans. We weren’t sure where they were going when we first saw the brief video of Adriana Lima waving the checkered flag, and then we were pretty sure Kia had lost its mind when it posted a five-hour video of Lima waving a checkered flag.

We’ll admit that she’s easy on the eyes, but a five hour video of anyone, doing pretty much anything, is about four hours too long for our attention spans.

Somehow, however, Kia pulled it off. Their Super Bowl ad may be the best we’ve seen this year, and it’s as bizarre as last year’s effort. We’ll let you be the judge, though – take a look at the video below, and tell us if it beats the efforts from Toyota, Volkswagen and Acura.

And just in case you want to verify that five hours of Adriana Lima waving a checkered flag is indeed too much of a good thing, here’s today’s extra special bonus video.

Even if your favorite team didn’t make it to the Super Bowl this year, Audi continues to be a star among automotive enthusiasts- so at least WE have something to cheer about.  In probably one of the cleverest Super Bowl commercials to come from Audi, they demonstrate what happens when the all-new Audi S7 shows up to a party full of vampires.

Why wait for the Superbowl to see the action happen? Check out the new Audi Super Bowl XLVI commercial below as a continuation to the teaser that we posted yesterday. You are going to like this one, I guarantee it!

Chevrolet is getting into the Superbowl commercial action by continuing their “Chevy Runs Deep” campaign. The Superbowl XLVI commercial, officially released yesterday, is rather clever and came about from a Chevrolet Route 66 film submission by 26-year old Long Island resident Zach Borst. The Chevy Superbowl commercial will air gameday and is shown in its full glory below for your enjoyment. I must say, it is excellent! Enjoy.

Volkswagen Goes to the “Barkside” in Superbowl XLVI Commercial Teaser Video 19

Volkswagen already made a hit during last year’s Superbowl with a commercial that will potentially go in the history books as one of the best automotive Superbowl commercials. For this year, Volkswagen does not plan to stop the momentum built up from last year’s clever Star Wars-themed commercial. VW has released what is an obvious hint towards what we should expect from them during the Superbowl XLVI’s commercial lineup continuing the same theme. Only this time, they have gone to the “Barkside”. Check out the teaser video below. Enjoy!

Lexus Teases Their Superbowl XLVI Commercial 17

Every year during the Superbowl we can all agree with the fact that the commercials are sometimes just as intense as some of the highlight plays of the game. Most notably, car commercials make up a large portion of these “spectacular” 30 second to 1 minute spots where vehicle manufacturers dump-out millions of dollars in hopes to captivate a large audience with their latest and greatest vehicle. Lexus, who has never had a presence in the lineup of multi-million dollar Superbowl commercials, will enter into the arena with their all-new 2013 Lexus GS in a 30-second spot. As an early kick-off, Lexus has provided an exclusive teaser of the commercial below.

Not only will Lexus have a prime commercial spot during the Superbowl this year, but they will kick-off a new social media activation tool called “TweetDrive Engineered by Lexus” on NBCSports.com. This will give NFL fans then chance to socially engage themselves in a social-media test during the Playoffs ultimately giving them a chance to win a trip for two to any NBC Sports Premium Event.

The Cars of Mercedes-Benz’s ‘Welcome’ Ad 9
Feb
Posted by Kurt Ernst in Automotive, Car Ads, Mercedes Benz, Superbowl Commercial, video on 02 9th, 2011

When it comes to post-1965 American iron, I’ll put my ability to to name a year, make and model up against the best of them. It’s the legacy of growing up turning wrenches in the family garage, and I still identify people more by what they drive than by their names. Bizarre, perhaps, but it works for me. Unfortunately, I lack the same skill when it comes to identifying vintage German cars. Sure, we had a few customers who owned Mercedes sedans and roadsters, but not nearly as many as those who drove American or Japanese cars. When Mercedes ran their “Welcome” Super Bowl ad, most of the cars in it were a mystery to me, and probably to you as well. The video below should help to clear up some of that mystery.

It’s hard to spot some of the cars in the original video, since they flash by quickly or are filmed from odd angles. I had a hard time spotting the 1938 540K Special Roadster (worth $8 million), but had no trouble at all picking out the 1952 Le Mans winning 300SL W194 (at 1:20 in the video). The cars I really wanted to know more about weren’t even mentioned in this follow up video; what’s the story behind the red 300 SL Roadster rounding up sheep, or the Le Mans Prototype race car that Diddy’s standing next to at the end of the video?

Super Bowl Car Ads: I’d Score It Kia 1, Chevy 0 4
Feb
Posted by Kurt Ernst in Automotive, Car Ads, Chevrolet, Chevy Camaro, Kia, Kia Optima, Superbowl Commercial, video on 02 4th, 2011

Let’s face it: if your team isn’t playing in the Super Bowl, half the game’s entertainment value is going to come from the ads. Every single advertiser pulls out all the stops to film a budget-blowing spot for the Super Bowl, because it ensures they’ll get their product in front of millions of beer and hot-wing fueled television viewers. Short of staging your own halftime “wardrobe malfunction”, there’s no better way to build brand awareness than with a Super Bowl ad that stands above the rest.

Kia is on a roll these days, launching one successful new model after another. The new Optima is a stunning car, and its quality is on par with anything else on the market these days. Kia’s already known for their Super Bowl ads, since it’s kind of hard to forget a marital aid getting down with a sock monkey on a road trip. How to top that for this year? I won’t spoil the video (below), but I’ll say this: it’s got super villains, aliens, and hopped up Mayans (or Aztecs; I always get them confused).

Chevy’s ad for the Camaro, on the other hand, just doesn’t cut the mustard. Sure, it’s got good visuals (and a stunning blond), but where’s the plot? where’s the build-up, where’s the conflict, where’s the resolution? Why do I get the feeling that the narrative is exactly how the ad agency came up with the idea? Like the bulk of their “Chevy Runs Deep” ads, this one just leaves me scratching my head and thinking about what could have been.
